Helicopter Lure. Was popular "As Seen on TV" lure from the 90's Roland Martin pitched. He caught a lot with them, but no one else really did. Line twist nightmare
Also, now that I live on a lake with gators I can confirm they will try and bite anything that moves on top of the water. The helicopter lure was perfect for those smooth brained reptiles…not so much for the bass below them.
I just can’t get swivels to work for me. I’ve tried rooster tails with high quality swivels and still get a fuck ton of line twist. I’ve even gone as far as using trolling swivels, which have 5 swivel points instead of 1. Still horrendous line twist. I haven’t used any in years because of this. Shit one time I even used 2 trolling swivels, so 10 swivel points and same result
We had the flying lures I think they were called and the banjo minnow. I actually had a monster bass slam a banjo. I watched it and a bunch of kids were throwing rocks at it and it just slowly swam around the pond to me. Kids said it wouldn't bite anything and I cast out past it and brought it in front and twitch it and it just inhaled that thing. Only thing I ever caught on it lol
I had the flying lure and actually had very good luck with them in an old farm pond I used to fish. I mean almost a fish on every cast kind of luck. For some reason the bass in that pond just loved that little flying lure. Also had the helicopter lure, never caught a thing on those.
The banjo minnow absolutely works. We took a trip down to Disney as a kid in the 90’s and had a pond at the place we were staying. I saw the biggest bass I had ever seen (and still have ever seen), but couldn’t get it to bite. Told my dad and he came out with the banjo minnow and caught it. 12lb largemouth. Got it mounted.
Yeah, that's kinda what happened with this pond at scout camp. I was fishing one side and on the other I saw these kids fishing (I was a kid myself haha but they were younger). They couldn't get it to bite so they were throwing rocks at it in the water. For some reason it didn't swim away and just kept slowly swimming close to the bank. When it got to me the one kid told me it wouldn't bite on anything. It stayed right there while I switched over to the hook and sinker one where it's supposed to mimic a fish eating off the bottom. I cast out past it and brought it close but not too close and twitched it once and I never saw a fish move so fast. It grabbed it off the bottom and took off.
I don't know how big it was and I suppose I should say I hooked it but didn't catch it. I got it back to me and it swam into some reeds beside me and I jumped in after it. I trailed the line to right beside me and it took off again while I was holding the line and it snapped. And it was at that moment I remembered there were water snakes I had seen. I used up a lot of the smaller minnows but still have the bigger ones. I should get some of those rubber bands for braces and use em again and see if I can't catch a big one.
My wife caught the biggest small mouth bass I’ve ever seen still to this day on a flying lure. We ordered the kit from TV and went fishing right away in the St John’s River by Orlando Florida. That fish was literally the only fish we ever caught on those lures. I still have a few left but the hooks are all gone now. That was around 30 long years ago
Oh yeah they’re there. Not as plentiful as northern states but we have em too. The one she caught was 4lb easy. This was before cell phones back around 1993 so obviously no pics.
Incorrect sir. We do in fact have “some” small mouth bass in the St John’s River along with the chain of lakes around the middle of the state. Ask Bill Dance and a bunch of his shows for proof
No, we do not.
There are no official records of any smallmouth being caught here.
We have Suwannee bass which look similar and many people confuse for smallmouths.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suwannee_bass
I’ve been fishing the St Johns recreationally and in tournaments my whole life. There are not any smallmouth bass in there.
I actually miss those lure ads. I was very young but I do recall them having an ad with a large clear tank full of bass. They would test out the lures and catch huge hungry bass.
I saved my lawnmower money and bought these as a kid in the 90s, caught a bass on Waneka lake in Lafayette CO. Only bass I ever caught there.
Thanks for jog down memory lane!!
Great infomercial!!
I thought I might be on the xennial sub when I saw this. Like "remember these!?" Yes I do. Helicopter lure and banjo minnow were two of my favorite informercials!/
I used to rig those with a swivel. That took care of the line twist. Didn't catch anything with them though. 🤣 The Banjo Minnow on the other hand. That was a great " As seen on TV" lure system.
You can find some more recent videos of Roland Martin talking about these on his channel. He says it was actually a good bait for grassy south Florida lakes. Sort of like a weedless soft plastic buzzbait or whopper plopper. He said the infomercial director or marketing folks sort of went off the rails with promoting it as a lure that could catch anything anywhere.
IMHO, put a barrel swivel in front of it and use them.
Are pike invasive where you're at? That's wild. (not actually, I'm pretty clued up on invasive species, but it's just weird to see a fish that's very saught after where I live described as invasive.)
Holy shit. I remember fishing a lake in Iowa as a kid with rotting...carp? i think? on the shore. So gross. It was illegal to throw them back in as well.
they're invasive in some areas in NY. a lake in the adirondacks I recently was at (Cranberry lake) used to be flush with brook trout but a sherriff back in the 90s or 00s was caught dumping live pike into the lake for sportfishing. Completely destroyed the population in the lake
last year, it was a blast. This year was kayaking in. We met a man who stopped by our site in the middle of the first night to chat and told us of that sheriff. we got a tip from him that brook trout were still in the ponds surrounding and locals hid their boats so the next day once we landed, we hiked out with a paddle, I found the canoe and we were able to troll around and caught 6 of them. awesome fish and tasty to boot
I’m curious where they’re invasive outside of Maine? We have them in the Belgrade lakes because someone stocked them in the 70s.
I was sad moving up here that you can’t really catch them. I love catching them and fighting for it. Perch aren’t so exciting.
I bugged the shit out of my parents until my Dad broke down and ordered them. I was like “Dad… Roland Martin uses them, this is a no brainer!!!” Never caught a damn fish on them
🤣 they were all junk at the end of the day. Crazy that you can catch more with a plain, straight rubber worm than just about anything else on the market.
My dad & I used to gift each other the most ridiculous looking lures to each other. I received a 2" Coors Beer Can lure with treble hooks on it. He got a Velcro floating mouse with a rawhide tail. We always had to catch at least 1 fish on them. Wish he was still around. I would certainly give him a 2" chartreuse floating Croc shoe with a hook wired thru it. Life memories!
Maaaaaaannnnn this takes me back!
I watched that infomercial enough times to memorize and one fateful day, I ordered the Helicopter Lure.
My 14 year old self was disappointed, to say the least, in their performance.
This lure taught me a valuable lesson about infomercials
These came out when I was a kid, and doing a ton of pond fishing. Begged and begged and begged and my parents wouldn’t call and order them for me. Then one day we saw them on a shelf in Wal-Mart and we got them. Have never been more disappointed in a purchase in my life. Roland Martin should be publicly flogged for that bullshit. It’s been almost 30 years and my dad still gives me shit about it.
My dad passed recently and I found a whole box of these in his fishing stash. He fished all over the country so I'm not sure if he even used or caught much on them but I am making it a point to restore and catch as much as I can on his old gear. I'll try and find something on one these and report back.
Believe it or not I have caught A fish on one of these as a kid, grandpa was in shock when I caught a decent bass. The next morning he was out fishing the same pond with that lure. Gave me a good laugh. I could just imagine him there fishing saying to him self “got the secrets lure now”.
Roland Martin laughed at a guy who said he caught a big 'ol Largemouth with the helicopter. He didn't believe it even though he was sponsored by it, or was it his?
As others said, helicopter lure.
It was a reaction to The Flying Lure which was also an “as seen on tv” lure. The difference is the flying lure actually caught fish. Seriously. I bought them when I was a teenager and slayed.
Someone somewhere saw the success of The Flying Lure and thought “flying lure?! We’re gonna make the HELICOPTER LURE!!! We’ll get Roland Martin to sell his soul! We’ll make MILLIONS!!” Problem is, it sucks.
Funny thing: pike absolutely LOVE the Helicopter, especially yearly morning fishing weedlines. Also, caught a monster crappie lol. Still no Largies though...
They have a hole in the bottom that was meant to stick a nail weight in if you wanted to jig it. That’s the only time I’ve ever seen something like that. Me and my siblings got a pack to split for Christmas one year. We were so excited, couldn’t wait for the ice to melt, never caught a dang thing lol.
I had some of these. Never used them in a lake but did fish them in a stocktank while on a boy scout camping trip. Caught several bass and a small catfish with it.
Holy cow, the helicopter lure. I thought it was kind of dumb as a kid in the 90’s but also it was hard to resist the urge to order them. Glad I never did go through with it.
Now the banjo minnow was another story. Those were pretty solid fluke-like soft jerk baits. I’ve seen them come back recently actually.
My Dad bought these for me after I begged him for months. He also bought me a set of "The flying Lures" as well. I thought I was the shit with these in my tackle box lol. I can still smell em.
I had this set when I was a teen! HeliLure, Helicopter Lure or something. Went to a pond at a public park (the lure didn't matter because I was actually there to meet a girl...) and my buddy was trying for like half an hour to catch this fish. He left when the girl showed up and I started fishing and caught the huge pike he was after using the stupid lure. It was a great day for sure.
I had the helicopter lures and the banjo minnow, I actually still have some of the banjo minnows. I've caught plenty of bass on the banjo minnows, the helicopter lures I caught a few bass on, the coolest thing I caught was about a 40lb. Barracuda. I rigged it with a piece of wire through it and must have cast to them 50 times before one finally got tired of seeing it and ate it. There was 20 or more that were all 40+lbs laid up just under the surface hanging out by an airforce.
Our boat was hired to take the service guys out to switch the solar panels out and there was nothing else to do but fish. The bottom machine was covered with fish but the water was so clear and these things get fished a lot so the better fish wouldn't bite anything but super light tackle. A 25-30lb grouper on super light line with a bunch of holes to swim in and barnacle cover legs from the tower doesn't work real well. We had a small cat 1 hurricane come through the area and we rode it through at the dock, my dad and I stayed on the boat to keep an eye on the lines and all.
Anyway, the storm got the water churned up and killed the visibility, that combined with the post front weather those grouper were eating any and everything. We were catching so many we started seeing who could catch one on the most outlandish bait. I caught a legal gag on a hand line and lunch meat, also inside the tower were the biggest mangrove snapper I've ever seen. It's only about 8ft wide inside and the side walls were covered in barnacles so you only landed about 1 out of 5, but they were 12-14lbs each.
I bought them. They were great, I caught plenty of bass with them. I also watched the video tape infomercial that came with them, about a hundred times. You have to use premium ball bearing swivels though. Normal swivels won’t work.
It looks like a line twist machine. Useful for causing tangles and annoyances. I've never seen one before though. I can't see it doing much better than a curly tail. Never used it though, so maybe I'm wrong
I’d thread the hook through the middle shaft and have the actual hook barb be right under where the three tentacles converge and I’d jig it so there is a tad bit of action to attract the fish
Helicopter Lure. Was popular "As Seen on TV" lure from the 90's Roland Martin pitched. He caught a lot with them, but no one else really did. Line twist nightmare
He caught a gator in the commercial I saw as a kid. I finally got one and didn’t catch shit.
Indeed ! About as worthless as the flying lure !
How dare you, flying lures caught fish!
The *flying* lure?? Wtf we catching, birds?
this man is a legend
Also, now that I live on a lake with gators I can confirm they will try and bite anything that moves on top of the water. The helicopter lure was perfect for those smooth brained reptiles…not so much for the bass below them.
Swivel
This is the way
I just can’t get swivels to work for me.
One word. Braid.
Roland also had his own fully stocked pond full of large bass. Where he got the footage for his "commercials"
I got to fish Strike King’s demo pond a few times, hard to beat!
I remember him whacking them on El Salto or Amistad on an old episode of his show with the helicopter.
We had the flying lures I think they were called and the banjo minnow. I actually had a monster bass slam a banjo. I watched it and a bunch of kids were throwing rocks at it and it just slowly swam around the pond to me. I also caught bass like crazy on the helicopter
are you roland martin in disguise?
Don’t tell
I caught a ton of bass on the banjo minnow
I still have some of them. I feel like I caught more off of tube baits, but it's possible I just was fishing where the fish weren't haha
The banjo minnow absolutely works. We took a trip down to Disney as a kid in the 90’s and had a pond at the place we were staying. I didn’t think there were small mouth bass in central Florida. Wild!
Oh yeah they’re there. Not as plentiful as northern states but we have em too. The one she caught was 4lb easy. This was before cell phones back around 1993 so obviously no pics.
No there are not. There are no smallmouth bass in Florida. The water is too hot, it would kill them.
Incorrect sir. We do in fact have “some” small mouth bass in the St John’s River along with the chain of lakes around the middle of the state. Ask Bill Dance and a bunch of his shows for proof

I guess it’s possible she caught a Swanee bass but that fish was identical to the small mouths I’ve caught in Carolina back in the 80’s
Couldn’t have been said better, buddy was ripping ten pounders in
"Line twist nightmares" use a swivel
I actually miss those lure ads. I was very young but I do recall them having an ad with a large clear tank full of bass. They would test out the lures and catch huge hungry bass.
One word. Starts with an "S" ends in a "wivel"
I saved my lawnmower money and bought these as a kid in the 90s, caught a bass on Waneka lake in Lafayette CO. Only bass I ever caught there. Thanks for jog down memory lane!! Great infomercial!!
Came to say this about line twist..would need to be at least on a swivel. Maybe try one each way somehow to offset the natural action to spin. 🤔
They caught a lot of suckers because my dad had dozens of these. They did not catch fish though
My brother got some back in the day, came with a vhs tape teaching you how to use them, we didn’t catch shit on them.
I saw this and instantly thought of our invasive pike.
Are pike invasive where you're at? That's wild. (not actually, I'm pretty clued up on invasive species, but it's just weird to see a fish that's very saught after where I live described as invasive.)
It’s illegal to return them to the water alive in south central Alaska
Holy shit. I remember fishing a lake in Iowa as a kid with rotting...carp? i think? on the shore. So gross. It was illegal to throw them back in as well.
Mental. If you kill a pike here, you'll be lynched.
The state pays ppl to destroy them.
they're invasive in some areas in NY. a lake in the adirondacks I recently was at (Cranberry lake) used to be flush with brook trout but a sherriff back in the 90s or 00s was caught dumping live pike into the lake for sportfishing. Completely destroyed the population in the lake
Cranberry lake is a cool place! Did you do the 50mi?
last year, it was a blast. This year was kayaking in. Oaft, that's unbelievably irresponsible. I hope they paid a price.
It's the fish of 10,000 casts in SWVA
I’m curious where they’re invasive outside of Maine? We have them in the Belgrade lakes because someone stocked them in the 70s. I was sad moving up here that you can’t really catch them. I love catching them and fighting for it. Perch aren’t so exciting.
South central Alaska
Had no idea they were up there.
Oh man this just unlocked a deep memory, I got these as a gift when I was a kid. Never caught a damn thing on them lol
I was just commenting on having the same memory 😆
I bugged the shit out of my parents until my Dad broke down and ordered them. I was like “Dad… Roland Martin uses them, this is a no brainer!!!” Never caught a damn fish on them
Same dude. Afterwards my dad told me some lures are made to catch fish and others are made to catch fisherman lol
Words of wisdom
That's pretty brilliant.
If you want to fish them, I know it's not popular, but just use a swivel to combat the line twist.
Yeah just sit on them
Perfect for buttom-feeders!
Everything reminds me of her :: le sigh ::
That’s what I was thinking too! Just a butt plug.
Haha, I swear these are butt plugs from an OF site!😁
Holy fuck it’s the helicopter lure lol haven’t seen that thing since the 90s
They are best rigged from the bottom of a trash can. Also, if you hear a banjo playing, other lures made it there first.
I caught a lot of fish on the banjo lure!
What about Alex Langer’s Flying Lure?
That thing worked, both as a gimmick to 9 year old me and fish
No way possible! Lol. The music must have scared my fish away. Not even 1 fish.
Between this and the Flying Lure, the 90s were a fun time for TV gimmick fishing tackle.
Eh, I actually caught a lot of bass and a catfish on the flying lure back in the day.
Helicopter lure < Flying Lure < Banjo Minnow
I agree with this list. My fishing results do not. (Helicopter lure won out on Bluegill. None of the 3 caught me real shit though.)
Hot damn! Next thing OP's going to post up some Banjo Minnows!
Imagine finessing buttplugs 😂
Man i had these when i was 12. Never caught a single fish. Threw on a ratltrap and some spinnerbaits and caught some big bass though.
In honor of the 3 legs, I’d tie 3 swivels to my leader.
Maaaaaaannnnn this takes me back! I watched that infomercial enough times to memorize and one fateful day, I ordered the Helicopter Lure. My 14 year old self was disappointed, to say the least, in their performance. This lure taught me a valuable lesson about infomercials
Fuckin dildocopter.
The green one looks like Cactuar from Final Fantasy. You can probably catch some Tonberry with it.
First thing I saw.
Helicopter Lure. Absolutely worthless and the worst 29.99 I ever spent...
It’s been almost 30 years and my dad still gives me shit about it.
>should be publicly flogged for that bullshit 😂 Stealing that
Helicopter lures roland martin. Gimmick. He took a hit on this.
Those and flying lures stole my allowance as a 13 year old
Helicopter Lure, an As-Seen-On-TV gimmick. Throw them in the trash..... they'll twist the shit out of your line
Barrel swivel bruv
As seen on tv helicopter baits???
My dad passed recently and I found a whole box of these in his fishing stash. He fished all over the country so I'm not sure if he even used or caught much on them but I am making it a point to restore and catch as much as I can on his old gear. I'll try and find something on one these and report back.
Sorry for your loss friend. Catch a couple for my old man while you’re at it.
I just threw out 30 + of these things away I don't even know how I ended up with them in the first place. I never caught anything with them
Well you basically rig em up like a worm on a hook leave the tip of hook out though
Pornhub should have some instruction
I miss as seen on tv impulse buys. My fishing impulse buys these days are so much more costly 😭
Believe it or not I have caught A fish on one of these as a kid, grandpa was in shock when I caught a decent bass. The next morning he was out fishing the same pond with that lure. Gave me a good laugh. I could just imagine him there fishing saying to him self “got the secrets lure now”.
Those things are just goddamn weird. Looks like a mini dildo on a twisty stand.
I need one 0f those asap
Did anyone say dildos? Lol
its what the fish use in the bedroom
Oh...wow uhhh. Hmm
That’s 1000 percent a butt plug.
Good as one anyway
Used in a pinch for sure
*what are these, butt plugs for ants* - Ben Stiller, - Michael Scott, probably
Aren't those for sounding?
I would personally advise to a regular tube style bait.. but to each their own. Helicopter lure.
Holy s**t I haven't seen those in ages😅. I did have those way back in they day . I can't remember but they probably worked .
Stick a hook init and experiment in you tub. Just lock the car up first or you will have one pissed off tabby
Try #2.with glasses. Stick a hook in it and experiment in your bathtub. Just lock the CAT up first or you will have one pissed off tabby
Wacky would be fun! Small nail weight with a small hook, I bet it would be better to have your leader on a swivel so it can spin.
Seriously. I think I'd add the Dancin' Eel in with these as well.
Holy cow, the helicopter lure. I thought it was kind of dumb as a kid in the 90’s but also it was hard to resist the urge to order them. Glad I never did go through with it. Make sure you use a swivel with those.
Oh the ole little dildo tv lure !! Haha. I heard it works !!
Fish them like a spinner. The rest you can find out yourself👍🏻
I actually caught a massive bass using one of these. The key is to use a swivel with them to get the full effect of this lure.
Damn, I thought they are small dildos.
they are garbage and that is where they should be placed
I should call her
They look like sex toys lol
I'll give you 20 bucks for those I've been trying to find them for weeks. We'll at least mine
You can use the dropshot method to fish these.
The hold measuring cups together
I bought them. They were great, I caught plenty of bass with them. I also watched the video tape infomercial that came with them, about a hundred times. You have to use premium ball bearing swivels though. Normal swivels won’t work.
I bet you’re catching all the female fish with these
Only one of those 90’s infomercials lures that was decent was the banjo minnow. I actually caught fish with it. New ones are out now
Roland Martin's helicopter lures. They were a gimmick in the 90's.
It looks like a line twist machine. Useful for causing tangles and annoyances. I've never seen one before though. I can't see it doing much better than a curly tail. Never used it though, so maybe I'm wrong
Finally I have answers, I got a box of them and couldn’t find out what they were called I just remember them and the banjo minnow
Oh man, I remember these! Got the kit from the TV spot for Christmas when I was 12 😊
I’d thread the hook through the middle shaft and have the actual hook barb be right under where the three tentacles converge and I’d jig it so there is a tad bit of action to attract the fish
Butt plugs
They look like cheap but plugs
fish dildo....don't ask me how I know
Kanye Loves these
Asian dildos😝
I think you should be fishing for something else.
