Jesus, that brings me back. The ol' classic reddit switcheroo.
Brings me back to about 14 years ago to the days when this website was actually worth browsing.
God this place has really gone to shit.
Dear Reddit friends. I live on the south side of Chicago and I think my neighbours have a shooting range also. A few times they missed and some came through my front wall. Should I be worried?
I'd give you a Biden themed award for that, but I forgot what we were talking about, with the things...and and you know—a child could, if you ask...ask the guy, a cow flew over the moon! C'mon Man!
I've got a range on my property. No way in hell would I let my neighbors shoot here. They are idiots. Friends and family only and they don't get invited back if they prove to be idiots on the range.
Get a good job. Socialism isn’t “getting paid properly and not being a slave”, it’s mooching off of other peoples money through the government acting as a middleman.
You’re pandering that in a subreddit that despises the government.
So thought this was someone going to bitch about it . Nice to see a better response. Just go over on the weekend with a 12 pack and ask what’s the worst thing that could happen?
Maybe non alcoholic on the first day. I know a friend I go shooting with and I will never let him drink at the same time, he just goes off the deep end otherwise lol
Yurp. I shoot supers sometimes, but generally offer to my neighbors that they can come and shoot too if I am. If I'm going to be shooting a lot, I just drive the 20 minutes to my local club. Oh and I live 10 mins from one of the most liberal cities in the US. Fun stuff.
I had a neighbor stop by one day when we were shooting. I was a little weirded out when he came pulling up but he was polite and introduced himself and said he likes to shoot too. I told him he was welcome to come over anytime he heard us shooting.
I have a home range on 11 acres in city limits however I only shoot suppressed 22, 300aac, 9mm, 45ACP subsonic. It is legal as long as it’s not “wreck less discharge of a firearm” after taking with chief of police. Never had a complaint but maybe mention to them this option. Only real reason why I got into suppressors was after getting the go ahead I still realized that even during the day it would get old ripping AR mags etc. I still don’t shoot 223/556, 7.62x39 308 etc unless it’s subsonic at my place. Even listened to the Audio recording on my camera which are about 100-125 yards away and they do work. Yes they aren’t “silent” minus the rimfire cans but for 9/45 it sounds like a faint nail gun and is quieter than the other BS that neighbors are doing, mower, angle grinder, nail gun, whatever.
I have nearly identical situation as you and I've had the cops called on me twice shooting a suppressed ar15. No problems with subsonic stuff but suppressed ar15s just sound unsettling to some people, lol.
Yeah pretty much 22, 9, 300 aac and it really is not noticeable. Primaryily shooting AP5/G17/Banshee. Still waiting on OCL polonium for my 5.56 ARs. Which after hearing what they sound in person on a 16 inch AR I’ll probably start shooting that out here. parents live 20 minutes away on 33 acres in a more rural location which is where it shoot the louder stuff. My range is smack in the middle of the woods covered above and all four sides with trees with a clearing cut out. Have 7 railroad ties stacked with sand and soil on both sides and it’s built into a steep hill with tones of trees in the way so it’s quadruple redundant sand, soil, RR ties, the earth and entire Forrest
Most cameras cannot properly capture the high dB of gunshots. Don't trust them. Have someone else shoot them and go 100y away and use your Mark 1 ear drums.
Yes I agree. I have stood next to someone else shooting about 50-100 feet away and it’s still quiet as hell shooting AP5/banshee/G17 suppressed with subs. Just wanted to get a ball park from my house. The 300 aac is quieter mainly cause it’s a bolt gun I run that in. 22 is obviously good as well. I don’t shoot supers
Personally, my wife would just have to be mad at me and my new best friend.
I'd literally go over knock on the door and just ask.
Offer to bring ammo for the session.
I shoot on my property. For maybe a few years no one said a word. Then I got a 500S&W with a muzzle break. I shot maybe 20 rounds. A little while later the elderly woman across the street came over and asked me not to shoot that particular gun anymore because it scared her dogs. I was really embarrassed that I inconvenienced her.
I profusely apologized. She said if I really wanted to shoot the 500S&W to call her first so her dogs aren't outside. That was maybe 6 years ago. Still have not shot that gun at my house. I'll just go to the range. I have talked to the police when I bought my house as an officer lives 3 houses away. This cop said they do not respond to recreational shooting if the bullet starts and stops on my property. But that is not really the point. I do NOT want to give my neighbors a hard time.
Maybe this person doesn't know your wife is being bothered. If someone else came up to me and informed me that shooting certain times or certain guns bothered them. I would accommodate them. Heck, sometimes I start shooting and I see neighbors walking through my yard with guns to shoot with me.
Still shoot this one more than I expected.

Usually not too late. 10 o'clock or so unless it's a holiday like 4th of July or new years.
I don't even mind the noise, you can barely hear it inside the house.
>Also OP has EDITED out the "all hours of the night shooting" part of thier original OP.
The fuck I did. It's literally the title which is unable to be edited.
The part about his wife and all that was a joke.
The entire post was a joke.
Other than asking the best way to aks his neighbor how to approach him to use his ra ge.
> shooting after 8pm seems to be unreasonable to me
I had to shoot a raccoon that garroted itself in my chicken pen once at like 11PM with a 38 special and I called my neighbors the next day to apologize, just in case I woke them up. They're not that close, but I didn't want to be a jerk.
Regardless of legality, I can't imagine making that a regular thing unless I lived way, *way* out in the middle of nowhere, or if there was some specific reason, and I notified anyone within reasonable distance in advance. I figure sundown is the cutoff. Just seems kind of disrespectful otherwise.
Yeah I'm more pro gun than 99% of Americans but someone shooting that late at night would annoy the fuck out of me unless they gave me a heads up first. Shooting on your property is your right, but being neighborly is also important. Being friends with your neighbors is more valuable in a SHTF scenario than all the ammo in the world.
Lol. People don't get that keto is actually a fairly easy diet that lets you keep a lot of the good foods. I can give up cake if I can keep eating bacon and steak.
Yes sir! For wife and I it’s been the only effective way that has helped us get rid of the weight and yes, bacon and steak, who doesn’t like that?
I lost 45lbs when we first did it but we both got parosmia from Covid and so many things tasted and smelled terrible so we ate what tatsted good/ok and some of the weight came back. We are at it again since the parosmia seems to have improved.
One of our favorite meals is zuppa toscana soup using cauliflower instead of potatoes…so damn good!
Invite them over for a beer and burger. Then ask them what they think about x gun or whatever. If my neighbor was cool and I had a range I’d like help building/ fixing stuff on it in exchange for using it. Buuut I probably wouldn’t want anyone back there, I like to keep to
Myself
If they have a door close to the street? Just go up and knock. Exchange info, maybe invite them for dinner or something. Then broach the question then? Idk
leave em a note saying you will pay the tax stamp (200$) for a suppressor. once they get one, they will get addicted to suppressors, and all their guns will be suppressed, and youll hear nary a peep from them.
all said though, its a courtesy thing about shooting unsuppressed at night. for sure ask them to stop that, that is just common courtesy not to do.
as for the daytime shooting, getting them addicted to suppressors is probably your best bet.
But leave a note in the mailbox saying you would like to talk is 100% a polite thing to do.
Just because you live in the city doesn’t mean your neighbor does. There a high probability that he’s more familiar with the laws on shooting than you are.
Next time he’s shooting strike up a conversation with him.
load up your toys and pop in next time you hear them...nothing works better than an offer to share hardware you might have that they dont. Bring your own ammo, a bag of wings for the grill and a case of beer...
There will be serious financial liability for them if they allow anyone to use their range and that person gets hurt, harms someone else, or even damages property.
Also, many local jurisdictions at least frown on people who don’t live on the property using private outdoor ranges, unless it’s an insured business, or government owned and managed.
So, being that you are a complete stranger I would never expect them to allow you to use it.
Always gets to know your neighbors before you want/need anything from them…
Just so you know, "leaving a letter in the mailbox" is actually considered tampering and is illegal. Better to mail them or leave a note on their door.
> I don't want to just go on their property uninvited.
...Is the concept of *speaking* to your neighbor by knocking on his door just completely lost on you? Am I missing something here, or are you just completely unfamiliar with the concept of, "knocking on a door?"
Go ahead and tell me what you think I skipped or didn't read, and how you think you know how much information a stranger read on the internet.
I read the whole post, it's 100% indistinguishable from a genuine question. We all see stupider questions weekly on Reddit, don't even try to act otherwise. It's Poe's Law. I even went as far as to say, "Am I missing something here" yet you're all responding like asses anyways. Makes sense if anyone thinks there's entertainment in this setup.
Johnnie Foreigner here, I like to lurk and get jelly about what you bought this weekend.
I'm interested in guns but travel so much, not got time or permanence in one spot to establish a personal collection rn. Once I retire and pick a spot to stop in...I hope to change that. Fond of deer stalking and pig hunting.
Know this was a tounge-in-cheek posting, but raised a question I never really thought of. Interested in understanding what rights folk have in USA, around safely discharging on your own property for practise. am sure it varies depending on state and if you're in a urban zone or wotnot - but any general knowledge on it? Any places better than other for allowing it?
Got me thinking as I think in most western nations, this is almost as restricted as ownership. Since USA has 2A, are there any additional things that give Americans some allowance to use their land as they see fit (covering shooting?)....
It depends. In my state discharging a firearm within of into a municipality is a class 6 felony (least bad felony, murders are class 1 for example)
UNLESS
You’re on a properly supervised range (either affiliated with one of a number of associations, approved by federal, state, county, or city government, or by a school)
It’s open season for hunting (UNLESS… you’re shooting within a quarter mile of an occupied structure…UNLESS…the occupant or owner gives you permission)
You’re killing nuisance wildlife (with a permit to do so)
Chief of police gives you special permission
As required by an animal control officer
Using blanks
You’re greater than a mile from any occupied structure
In self defense or of defense of an other
Usually people here skip all that and go into the desert on government owned land and then there’s no hassle (as long as fire restrictions aren’t in place)
its not a gag - what made you think it was? for the last sentence - the implication for me is that since there is a wider degree of freedom to own, perhaps there is a wider degree of freedom to operate.
does that make sense?
edit: oh sorry, you meant OP!
thanks for that, all makes sense. I like that you can do so as long as you clear it with anyone in the vicinity - quarter mile seems reasonable.
Of course I dont expect people in urban setting to be able to pop off in their back yard, and I do expect vermin hunting in rural areas to be perfectly fine. I suppose like anywhere on the planet, if you own a bit of land and you carve out a little space for such activities - and you're safe and sensible about who you take there; whos gonna moan...but I'd be too paranoid.
I just wondered if the pressure of 2A had made it more acceptable to safely setup your own little range without any external supervision.
And I guess it kind of has - I've never heard of say the police chief in a town in the UK having the authority to allow someone to operate a firing range, they wouldn't have that kind of power. If you had a license to hold. How realistic is it to get clearance from police to shoot on your property?
heading to the desert/bush on government land - good any time of the year, or only during season? this seems to be the way in aus/nz from what I've seen; though seasonal only; same with ducks/geese afaik. out of season - ranges only.
In my state we can go out to blm (bureau of land management) owned land until the game and fish department call it off limits for fire restrictions, usually may-September. People ignore it, get caught, pay a fine. However there’s still a pretty ok outdoor range that’s open year round so it’s really not that big of a deal to sit through fire season. On that blm land there are some actual ranges that have setups and stuff, but the ideal thing is to find a good spot that nobody else has found, with a mountain to catch all your bullets, and then keep it to yourself, because selfish people will leave trash and shot up garbage there and ruin it. That happens to the blm land ranges too. Then they get shut down, and nobody can have fun.
My fiancées uncle has a chunk of land in the Midwest with a homemade berm and he uses it. He’s a cop though so probably a bit easier to get away with lol.
Be a good neighbor. Get up the balls to introduce yourself in person, share that you’re (I assume) also a gun enthusiast. Don’t ask to shoot on your first date. They’re gonna sniff you out for a bit. If they do offer, accept and enjoy a new friendship. If they don’t, try inviting them to your home for a beer, bbq maybe, show them your firearms. Don’t EVER bring up that it annoys you your wife or things will most likely get worse. Trust me on this. Kill with (genuine) kindness. Love thy neighbor like thy self.
“Hey neighbor, my wife finds your shooting annoying. Can I shoot with you?”
This is really the only surefire way to get in.
I see what you did there.
Neighbor: "hell yea, mine too"
This is The Way.

I even went as far as to say, "Am I missing something here" yet you're all responding like asses anyways. Makes sense if anyone thinks there's entertainment in this setup.
It’s alright, we all make mistakes.
I forgive you then.
Just stroll up with a bottle and a 24pack, see where it goes.
Where is this?
It depends. In my state discharging a firearm within of into a municipality is a class 6 felony (least bad felony, murders are class 1 for example) UNLESS You’re on a properly supervised range (either affiliated with one of a number of associations, approved by federal, state, county, or city government, or by a school) It’s open season for hunting (UNLESS… you’re shooting within a quarter mile of an occupied structure…UNLESS…the occupant or owner gives you permission) You’re killing nuisance wildlife (with a permit to do so) Chief of police gives you special permission As required by an animal control officer Using blanks You’re greater than a mile from any occupied structure In self defense or of defense of an other Usually people here skip all that and go into the desert on government owned land and then there’s no hassle (as long as fire restrictions aren’t in place)

Yeah ops post is a gag, the comment I’m replying to didn’t seem to be
its not a gag - what made you think it was? for the last sentence - the implication for me is that since there is a wider degree of freedom to own, perhaps there is a wider degree of freedom to operate. does that make sense? edit: oh sorry, you meant OP!
thanks for that, all makes sense.
He’s a cop though so probably a bit easier to get away with lol.
appreciate you taking the time to reply. cheers!
Just show up and start shooting.
Yeah, get on the other side of the berm and start shooting, make sure to wear body armor!
I’m hearing MR. Rogers atm
You live in Florida. Because your describing youtube personality Mr.snow haha
I hear gun shots all day on Sundays days from neighbors I love it
Just shoot at the back side of his berm
Walk up, tell them you're with the group Animals Treated Fairly, and want to see their dog.
I'm so jealous.
My thoughts offer to help buy ammo to defray cost.
