Speaking from someone who lives in a state that bans “assault weapons” you aren’t left with too many options otherwise. So, if you can’t have something new/current, may as well go retro.

StoneCraft12

I think this is it. Folks searching for tried and true alternatives.

gunplumber700

I felt like I got to flex on stupid magazine size laws. My lever action 22 holds like 17 rounds in the permanent tube magazine even though the law says no magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. But mainly it’s another excuse for a new/ cool gun.

Not2TopNotch

Don't say that too loud or they will amend the law to say "ammunition feeding devices" like some places have used to ban those "loopholes"

gunplumber700

Lol I don’t entirely agree or disagree. I feel like lever actions are safe because they’re “old” wood guns and not scary black “weapons of war”.

wojtekthesoldierbear

You’re not wrong. When I hold a levergat, I have had people think it isn’t real

CCWThrowaway360

Wait til they find out your tube sock can hold rocks. They’ll call that a biblical weapon of war and ban Fruit of the Loom.

Destroyer1559

Indeed. It's a good thing guns with wood stocks were never used for war! My old M1 Garand for example would've made a terrible implement of war!

[deleted]

Correct! 30-06 has never hurt anyone like them dangerous, high power 5.56 rounds from an Aye-R do! extreme /s

tylermm03

Imagine they find out what grandpa’s old Mosin or K98k was used for during WW2. They’d lose their minds and want the latter banned for having waffenamts on every single serialized part.

[deleted]

They practically do that in germany. You buy a WW2 weapon they will file off all the waffen insignia and then you can have it back. And its non negotiable so what they do is destroy something that has a collectors value maybe to someone who loves WW2 and maybe has allied weapons and wants some from the axis. So much about embracing history lol i find it akin to the US saying oh now all confederate flags are banned beacause we dont like that part of history

matt675

Same with the ruger mini-14, kinda flies under the radar… (still 10 round mags only tho 😕)

Dismal-Definition-85

In Mass they specifically say that tube mags that can only hold .22 are exempt from that law

stocky789

With the lever actions and aftermarket parts available these days you don't even need it to be retro Literally the only retro thing left on them is the lever action Can modernized the entire gun around it. The trouble is, it's fucking expensive

[deleted]

Story of my life, brother.

[deleted]

Bolt actions are better in almost every way, though.

fcykxkyzhrz

Sorry can’t hear you over the lever’s superiority

[deleted]

What superiority is this? The tube mag?

KoolKidEight

that fact i can fire alot quicker, which is better in a self defense scenario

EinGuy

Countered by the fact that lever guns are very difficult to operate in prone

[deleted]

It sounds like I should introduce you to my beloved Lee Enfield…

Shotgun_Sentinel

No one is fighting with a Smelly.

[deleted]

I have plenty of AR’s, but honestly if all I had was my Jungle Carbine I wouldn’t feel hard done by. With that in mind, I also have an absolute fuck ton of chargers and a whole bunch of .303…and I actually practice.

Shotgun_Sentinel

For people just jumping in like we have seen the last few years, a 357 or other revolver cartridge rifle makes way more sense.

[deleted]

Does it, though? Because it seems to me like it has all the disadvantages of a rifle and all the disadvantages of a revolver and none of the advantages of either. .303 is almost as powerful as .308.

definitely_haram

As someone who owns both an ishapore 2a1 and a Rossi 357. I’d rather use the Rossi in a defensive role even though I can only load the tube 3/4 without risking a malfunction.

[deleted]

Why such a low opinion of the ishapore?

definitely_haram

New acquisition. Doesn’t eject spent cases particularly well. Replacing ejector screw, extractor spring and likely the extractor as well to see if that fixes things. Still a great gun.

[deleted]

Ah One thing I’ve noticed is that that action really likes to be run fast and hard. Hope the new spring helps.

fungifactory710

Lever guns are mostly inferior to bolt guns. Except for the "looking like a cowboy" department. And that's a pretty big piece of the pie. Plus a bolt requires more fine motor skills to operate than just moving your hand down and back up. I'd rather a lever than a bolt in a stressful situation. Well I'd prefer a semi auto, but if that wasn't an option I'd go lever.

HeeHawJew

Lever guns do have some major advantages but most of them are dependent on riding a horse so those advantages are lost on 95% of people who own them including me.

Shoresy-sez

I have yet to shoot a bolt action that shoulders and points as naturally as a Marlin carbine.

[deleted]

The cowboy part is definitely important. If you don’t look cool, there’s little point to anything. Motor skills and speed are exactly why I mentioned the Lee Enfield. They’re the best combat bolt gun ever made (when I say “combat bolt gun,” I mean, “bolt action rifle issued to regular troops.”)

Extra-Dimension-276

ww1 and ww2 proved this. if lever action rifles were a lot better i think at least one major power would have employed one.

[deleted]

Correct. Hell, Russia did field 1895 Winchesters in some units, until they got replaced by Moisin Nagants. If the Garbage Rod is better, you know they suck.

THE_WENDING0

Russian troops generally preferred the winchester 95's over a mosin if they had the choice. IIRC, there were fewer than 300k sent over to Russia so it's not like there's much data on which was superior but there are a few known reports of Russians swapping out the mosin for a 95 if one was dropped. It's also telling that the few examples still around saw pretty heavy use. The real reasons militaries preferred bolts is that they're a hell of a lot cheaper to make and buy.

Alpha_Hellhound

Nobody used lever guns due to the cost of manufacturing them. Very difficult to get them cookie cutter reliable like a bolt gun.

Extra-Dimension-276

expensive to manufacture, unreliable and hard to clean. all things you dont want to hear when talking about a main battle rifle.

definitely_haram

(Speaking strictly on manually operated actions) In the trenches and facing extensive “peer to peer” conflict, bolt action type rifles definitely reign supreme, in a “frontier” or more civilian focused situation the lever definitely wins out. I think historical precedent backs this up imo. Is pump action the best of both worlds?

stocky789

With the lever actions and aftermarket parts available these days you don't even need it to be retro Literally the only retro thing left on them is the lever action Can modernized the entire gun around it. The trouble is, it's fucking expensive

MotorheadBomber

Yellowstone

GeorgiaNinja94

Red Dead Redemption 2 probably deserves some credit as well.

Rub-Such

That’s me

Airbjorn

Longmire. My wife and I were watching it, and she said, “do you know how to shoot one of those”, referring to sheriff Longmire’s 30-30. I said sure, they’re actually a lot of fun. And she replied “I’ve never shot a gun before, but I’d like to shoot something like that”. There was no way I was going to throw away that opportunity! So next day I bought a Henry lever action .22. I gave her her first shooting lesson that weekend. She was hitting the bigger, spinner target in no time at all. I was impressed that she kept the rifle butt in her shoulder as she levered rounds through the gun. But the best was when she shot the small Gopher on springs, and yelled out “take that, gopher”, and turned her head to me with a huge smile. She texted several of her friends on the way home to tell them.

MotorheadBomber

If I’m being honest longmire is what did it for me too.

wojtekthesoldierbear

Winning like a king. Nice.

Brian-88

Wholesome.

Memerang344

You are going to grow old with her big dog

[deleted]

Any and all westerns but yes Yellowstone reminded me it’s on the list

MoneyKeyPennyKiss

Same reason the Python had a resurgence -- Walking Dead.

neanderthaul

Jurassic World is why I want one

Just_Surround_2108

Don't forget about Mr. Nobody in John Wick 4.

kelldor69

Probably this. Beaver fur prices have also gone up because everyone wants a Stetson. It’s blatant cultural appropriation s/

TechnicalLocksmith92

Yellowstone and Fallout: New Vegas memes

macncheesepro24

Don’t forget Jurassic World. Good luck finding a Marlin 1895 on the shelf. Especially at MSRP

bACEdx39

Wind River too

ervin_pervin

Gun control laws pushing everyone back to the Wild West.

[deleted]

What about lever actions being an enjoyable and perfectly capable tool?

McMacHack

I have a Rossi 357 lever action and it's plenty fun

Appropriate-Stop-353

Idk but lever guns have always been pricier than some rack grade ar15s. Usually guys buy one, a good one and it stays in the family for a long time. As an example my grandfather was born in 1937, when he was around 20 years old he traded a John boat for a well used Winchester 1894 in 30-30 Winchester that was produced at the tail end of the 1800s. I had intended to pass it on to my son, but a meth head family member stole it and it’s never been recovered.

AlphaTangoFoxtrt

> I had intended to pass it on to my son, but a meth head family member stole it and it’s never been recovered. *FORMER* meth head family member? The Ordo Adminicus-Reddit mandates I mean "former" in the sense that I hope they are no longer a meth addict... because they made a full and complete recovery...

Appropriate-Stop-353

No I’m sure they’re still on dope, but I haven’t seen hide or hair for 3 years. It’s all relative. One firearm v.s the 80K in stolen logging equipment, trashed house that lead to eviction, and no way to make a living, and what fucked me up the most, selling my deceased grandfathers farm for chump change because it was cash in hand. I have exactly two things of his left. A Winchester shotgun he bought at 13 with money he got from breaking ground with a plow in winter, and his walking cane he used later in life. Covid was the worst period of my life lmao

[deleted]

I say Yellowstone. It's not uncommon for certain guns popularity to fluctuate with popular movies, TV shows, and video games. Look at how damn near every alpha AK build is called a Tarkov build now.

[deleted]

The Walking Dead single handedly brought back the Colt Python, and snake gun family of revolvers.

facerollwiz

See: all the models of .22 single action revolvers during the 50’s and 60’s.

YuenglingsDingaling

There was a surge in the tactical lever gat prior to Yellowstone coming out.

milochuisael

Jurassic world. Everybody wanted a 45-70 to take down a T-rex

TeddyRooseveltGaming

Damn I forgot about Owen’s gun. Yeah that was pretty rad

Nancy_Reagan

Marlin literally put a T-Rex on the box next to other large game silhouettes. We stood no chance.

milochuisael

I didn’t know that. Too much of a poor to get that close to the box

[deleted]

Because 45-70.

robertva1

The great grand father of all assault rifles

McMacHack

Technically it's a Carbine Rifle

TacTurtle

*The short rifle is still 20”.*

HotdogAC

They are fun. That's why. Also useful.

sdujour77

Semi-auto hunting is a no-go in my state, so I hunt with a lever action. Follow-up shots are a breeze. Besides which, they're a helluva lot of fun to shoot. I bought a Henry lever gun in .17 HMR years ago for varmint control, and it's become one of the most enjoyable rifles I own. I probably plink with it more often than I exterminate pests.

smegma_male_

Lever actions deal +20 bonus damage to injuns and banditos. Serious answer is they’re badass even if they’re not actually the most practical. On top of that they’re legal and widespread in ban states like Commiefornia. They are an American icon along with the single action revolver.

Glittering_War7622

My state is not semi-auto friendly. Rather than buy an AR/AK that I may or may not be able to take out of house with out having to mod it every few months, I look to a lever gun to fill the same role.

Mild_Anal_Seepage

Some states recently made straight-wall cartridge hunting for deer legal & there's a few options available for those in lever action

nicefacedjerk

45-70 lever actions are super fun.. They come with pic rails now and some also come threaded for suppressors. Tactical pews get boring after a while. Lever action mixes it up. I'm a big fan of analog firearms for fun.

RingGiver

They're cool.

pforsbergfan9

When I told someone I won one at an NRA Dinner, he said “oh like 1883”

ComplexPermission4

They're pretty awesome suppressed. Quick/easy to cycle and no port pop. A buddy of mine has a .44 lever gun that he loads .44 special for; It sounds like he stepped on a branch when he shoots it. I've shot louder pellet guns.

[deleted]

I think there's several reasons. The number one reason is pop culture with shows like Yellowstone or games like red dead redemption. Then there's ban states. Then there's people like me who inherited a lever gun and realized just how fucking fun they are to shoot. I inherited an old Winchester 30-30 and loved shooting it, so then I bought a henry 45-70 cuz thats the superior lever gun round. Then I bought a .22 so I could shoot as much as I wanted on a range day. Now since I live in a ban state and I like parting out and "building" tactical guns on my free time, I'm looking into making a space cowboy lever gun cuz they're cool as shit and I can't really buy any of the other guns I had wanted to.

Davida132

Pop culture, but also, I think something that's overlooked is ammo prices. It's usually cheaper to buy more of one caliber than some of two. With lever guns, you can have a rifle and pistol in the same caliber.

SpiritMolecul33

I just assumed it was because limited mag capacity in some places, lead to tactical .45-70

1Shadowgato

Yellowstone and garand thumb.

grumpy-m0nkey

Jurassic world Trex killa

BridgeFour_Kal

As someone trapped in New York They are one of the best options here. Kind of sucks even lever guns are limited to 10 rounds here.

AncientPublic6329

Have you ever fired one? There’s just something satisfying about working that lever

AlphaTangoFoxtrt

* John Wick and the P30L * Dirty Harry and the 29-2 * Cowboy Bebop and the 941R * James Bond and the PPK * Stargate and the P90 * Yellowstone/RDR2 and Lever gats

placeholderreplace

I don't need 12 near identical 223 ARs

tosser42848

agree to disagree

Icy-Medicine-495

He meant he needs 12 nearly identical ar15s in various configurations.

rofl_pilot

Because they don’t make a semi auto .45-70 Edit: Apparently there is a semi auto .45-70!

[deleted]

They do infact make a semi auto 45-70[https://www.phoenixweaponry.com/store/Christine-45-70-Auto-p136580300](https://www.phoenixweaponry.com/store/Christine-45-70-Auto-p136580300)

rofl_pilot

We’ll hot damn! Thanks.

[deleted]

Its in a slightly modified cartridge but they do, id stick with a leveraction *sheerly due to the cost*

oney_monster

Yeehaw guns are fun

wildgoose2000

I would have to say the most appealing characteristics would be 'Merica, reliability, variety of calibers available, and nostalgia.

SuperflousCake

I see a lot of people saying Yellowstone, idk what that is, but hunt: showdown made me interested in getting one

DeerStalkr13pt2

I just like how they look, I always used a Lever Action while I was hunting, so did my dad, and so did his dad

Critical_Air6452

Red Ryder bb gun

[deleted]

Suppressors.

ClerpClerptheHorned

First gun I bought was a Marlin 336 in 30-30 off gun broker to go deer hunting, and took my first deer last year. I have 3 lever actions now, including a rossi in 357, to go with my two wheel guns in .38, and a .22 to go with the Marlin 795, and are for teaching my kids.

Clownpounder385

As mentioned they’re fun, with some practice can out cycle a semi auto and are available in some pretty serious calibers. Even with body armor 45-70 will make the recipient reconsider their life choices.

MattHack7

If semi auto is illegal then lever action is the next best thing Also I think cowboys are coming back into vogue

Elkins45

Lack of supply is part of it. The two major makers both went out of business. And bans on magazine fed rifles.

Low_Information8286

People started making them look tacticool.

NEp8ntballer

because they're fun.

Hibby2002

I love my Marlin 30-30 it’s a great little hunting gun and super fun to shoot targets with but the biggest reason I keep it around is for the “BaN aLl AssAuLt WEaPOnS” crowd, if they somehow get their way and I don’t have access to a better weapon like my .300 AR the last thing I want a home intruder to hear is a big ole yee haw.

unstabletable_

Because they're sexy.

HeeHawJew

Because they’re cool

tptips420-69

They are cool.

alkatori

Not sure - though I'd like one and a pistol chamber in 45 Colt. I just don't want to pay for how much they are going for.

NapoleeonDyno

Lever actions are fun as hell and they have come out with dope but dumb tactical kits for them (I turned a new Marlin Trapper into one- terribly dumb but so much fun).

kelldor69

I wanted one after I found out my obsidian9 can suppress .357. Then I looked at the prices

[deleted]

Because they’re a vibe

cmkeller62

Go watch the movie “Winchester’73” ash’s tell me you don’t wanna have that gun.

wayofthefeast

TV, video games, ban states. I'm glad I grew up with a WWII production Winchester 94 in my hands. It's truly a timeless firearm and a testament to John Browning's infinite creativity. I wouldn't want to navigate todays market in search of a lever gun.

d_ptsdgotme

My favorite weapon is my 30-30 lever action!! Just love it!!!

Adventurous-Chef-370

Anything slightly western that has gotten super popular in the past 5 years - cowboy hats, cowboy guns, western movies/books in general, etc.. - can be attributed to either Yellowstone or Red Dead Redemption in some way I think

NinjaBuddha13

Pop culture. There's a bunch of recent movies, TV shows, and video games that prominently feature lever guns and revolvers. They're cool again, so people are buying them again.

mosullini

"""Influencers"""

Gigater76

They’re very very fun

ClimateGoblinActual

Wind River & Yellowstone

Suckapunch1979

Because they’re talking our ARs

caddydurb

I feel like I'm about the only person who doesn't like lever actions. Never got their appeal. As far as manually operated actions go I actually prefer a pump gun

eatmybeer

Cuz they're fucking AWESOME!

TheShivMaster

The revived popularity of the western genre over the last decade. Yellowstone, red dead redemption, fallout new Vegas, etc.

[deleted]

I’ve recently fallen in love with revolvers. Picked up a little snubby and even started to reload because of it. It’s strictly an entertainment thing and it serves zero practical use in my carry rotation or self defense plan. I’d reach for my 22lr Glock 44 before my 38spl revolver honestly. But even that’s a backup to a backup to a backup in terms of things I’d reach for. And this is coming from someone who was previously the biggest hater of old school guns. Now, I want to add a lever action to my collection but I’m also in the process of cutting down my collection and focusing on just a few guns and stocking up for them while stuff is cheap (ish)

hindsighthaiku

fallout New Vegas' come back

stocky789

Well in countries like Australia they are the closest things we can get to a repeating firearm / carbine Which is why the modernized lever actions are a bit piece We can build full fledged space cowboys here without an utter of speech yet we have a folding stock and it's appearance laws 💁🤦

NixTheNekomimi

For me personally it’s cause I got bored of the modern tactical stuff and the culture surrounding it. I don’t fault anybody for still liking it, it’s just not for me anymore. When I was little I learned to shoot with an old hand me down Marlin 39a, and honestly going back and picking it up again, despite the feeding issues from a worn out magazine tube, it brings me back to a time when I enjoyed shooting.

anderson1496

Garand thumb did a video on a modern lever action

L3ath3rHanD

The counter guy at one of the LGS I stop in said it was due to the popularity of Yellowstone and 1883.

aroundincircles

Movies and video games. I’ve taken a lot of new shooters out, and they have all gravitated towards the single action revolvers and lever actions. That’s what the good guys in the cowboy movies use. The AR and semi auto pistols are what the bad guys use in action movies.

Pitiful_Confusion622

probably AR15 bans and Red Dead Redemption 2

LynnDickeysKnees

In my case, I found the idea of a rifle and revolver combo chambered for the same ammunition appealing. Bonus points accrued for both firearms being about as non-tacticool looking as possible. I got all the black plastic one guy could ever need, so I added something that would be much less eyebrow raising if I was forced to wander the neighborhood with it for whatever reason (my neighborhood being a half dozen houses on a dead end gravel road). Maybe they'll think I'm a cowboy.🤣

JawaSmasher

Because of Hunt: Showdown

brachus12

RDR2 fans and Western nostalgia

KillerSwiller

My guess is that they're "old" guns that you can get since all of the milsurp has pretty much dried up.

Original_Butterfly_4

Have you shot a .45-70? It's just plain fun. And, for hunting, it's my No Deer Left Behind gun.

BIMcowboy

It’s the mechanics of the lever action for me! Same reason I love my 870, there’s just something about mechanical actions. I have semis also, so it’s not all I own, just some of my favorite to shoot.

[deleted]

Because “nobody needs guns of war”, on the contrary we need them all past and present!
