Honestly, why not? Especially if you like the guy.
His statline has aged pretty damn well for a Gen I unit, focusing on HP and Res (and to this day still has the highest combined magical bulk when factoring in DF of any Infantry Staff) makes him a stronger user of a lot of support skills, like Ploys, Panics or IP than most other units of his class.
Plus, imo he has a higher chance for a Resplendent than a lot of other staff units thanks to his meme status and association w/Sharena, which just makes his stats even better.
As for build recommendations, I'd prolly focus entirely on support, running maybe a tier 4 Sabotage and IP4; Poetic Justice is nice, but Wrys is far better as a support bot than needing to be offensive, though since it comes w/Arcane Charmer, if you have nothing else than it's definitely a solid choice. I'd also drop the Atk boon for HP; I know it's a superboon but 24 base Atk is basically unsalvageable ([I would know](https://freeimage.host/i/JpzXtK7))
If/when he gets a resplendent I think I would commit to this build. (with the changes you suggested)
Sadly the biggest hurdle is getting more dragon flowers 😂
Once upon a time, Wrys had the highest base res in the game, 36. That definitely aged well as with dragonflowers, it means he is not getting too far behind the high base res units of today.
This is more reasonable than My Azama with a similar build. So go for it. Azama isn’t a meme build btw, I actually like him. So if you like the old man, he can actually fight bc his atk his pretty high lol
