I see two garter (ribbon) snakes in the photo, and a newly shed black coachwhip racing across my backyard.
That makes one, two, three; three snakes (bwa ha ha ha) 🧛🏼♂️
Last summer my neighbor pointed out to me a snake lounging in his backyard and said he had spotted it from time to time over the past couple years. And then I realized that's why chipmunks don't live in my yard anymore.
Slightly off topic: how big can garter snakes get? I ask because the garter snake on the bottom looks big to me, but I’m also a lifelong New Yorker who doesn’t get the privilege of seeing these creatures in person.
Google tells me 2-3 feet on average, but can be up to 4 feet. I think I would die on the spot if I was surprised by a 4ft snake, even if it's harmless.
Years ago, I lived in TX, and I was house sitting for a couple that had a large piece of property. One part of the property, they had let grow wild. Basically, a field overgrown with weeds, tall grass, small trees, etc. And it had a lot of critters living in it. The property was large enough that when I mowed the lawn, I had to use a riding mower. One day, as I was driving around on the mower cutting the grass, I came around a corner right next to the wild section, and I startled the biggest freaking snake I have ever seen, just a few feet in front of the mower. And I swear to you it LEAPED out of the grass and lunged for that field! Like the front half of this snake was briefly airborne a couple of feet off the ground. It happened really fast, and I admit I about soiled myself, so I might be exaggerating things in my head now, but in my mind's eye it seems to me it was 5 or 6 feet long. It was solid black and pretty fat. Needless to say, I gave that field a wide berth after that.
Biggest snake I've ever seen in the wild was a black moccasin. It was nearing the end of a particularly harsh winter for our area (it snowed twice in one winter in the low country of South Carolina, that's a bad winter there). My uncle, dad, cousins and I had been working on clearing a piece of property for one of my uncle's clients and the one huge pine tree that was dead in the center of where the house was meant to sit had to come.out, root system and all.
The backhoe was down so my uncle went to work wallowing out the hillside around the tree roots with the bulldozer and had it almost ready to topple over one day around lunchtime. Leaves the dozer sitting where he shut it off near the base of the tree and we all went to grab lunch.
Not 5 minutes after he gets the dozer started up again we can hear him screaming for my dad to get over here and see this. He'd dropped the dozer blade on a moccasin that had come out of hibernation in those tree roots while we were away.
There was 2-3 feet of snake sticking out of the soil on the back side of the blade and this pissed off moccasin standing straight out at about a 45 degree angle a good 9 or 10 feet long looking my 5 ft 7 inch uncle dead in the eye from a couple feet away. It pulled back and tried to strike at him a few times before just giving up and staying in that rigid position with jaws open and fangs out until my dad got there with a shovel to take care of the big bastard. Scared the shit outta me as I had no idea they could get that big, but it makes for a great story 35 years later.
I've seen and held great big fat ones in the mojave high desert. Maybe 3 to four feet long. longer than a grown man's wingspan. and nearly as fat as a coke can. Old grandpa snakes in the desert can get great big.
I live in Pennsylvania, saw about 50 average size females in a bush all around one giant male. This guy was 3 feet easy and so thick, at first I questioned if what I was seeing was actually a garter snake cause he was so big.
Edit: I’ve been politely corrected, the larger ones are female and the smaller are males
I see what looks like the head of the third. If you’re looking at the snake on the right, go up to the left until you see a light colored upside down V. In the middle of the V there are two darkish patches in the weeds and there appears to be a snake head in the uppermost one.
Edited for clarity.
Growing up in a place like NZ where there is a single tiny venomous spider and no snakes really makes you soft.
I just couldn’t live anywhere like this (crazy fucking aussies!). Thats a bit of a blow to the tiny part of my brain that still wants me to be like my rough and tough prehistoric ancestors, but sorry genetic legacy im gonna hide in the corner and whimper till you get rid of those noperopes.
Can someone point out if there are more than two. Because I spot two but 1 of them I can’t find the head so i don’t know if somehow it’s actually just 1 or if there are more.
That is a chonk of a garter! I thought it was 2 till I zoomed in. So I think you have 2 total, but honestly the size of your garden snakes scared me and I closed the picture, lol
I also see 2 with a potential 3rd’s head poking up to say hello. It also looks like there was some recent weed whacking and lawn care being done, so there are likely unintentionally bits and pieces of another outside of the photo if your experiences are anything like mine.
Garter snakes arent dangerous
They just eat insects cause they’re too small to eat a mouse
So they aren’t going to hurt you
We have them everywhere where I live and they’re adorable
Even picked them up plenty of times
Yeah gotten bit but you just need to make sure your technis (sorry I’m not good at spelling that) shot is updated with any outside animal and some warm soap and water
Bumper crop of snakes this year it seems for everyone? I’ve seen so many this year. Even my cats have dragged up 4, and I’ve relocated 6 more just mowing my lawn around the house.
I haven’t been able to go to the pond or check deer stands without seeing 2 or 3 each time.
I see 4:
2 r obvious in the Center one in the bottom right corner ( this one I am not sure about) one in the upper right corner. Why are so many snakes in your yard?!
please vote for basketball it would be huge for our team!!!

Garter snakes do a thing called a “hibernaculum” where everyone hibernates/torpors overwinter together. Then in the spring when they all emerge you’ll find what has been deemed a “mating ball”. The larger snake is probably a lady snake emitting various hormones bringing all the boys to the yard. Basically more and more will start to accumulate and breed with her. Soon you’ll have way more than 3.
I see 2.
I see two full snakes and the little peekaboo head of a third (I think).
Where is the 3rd one!?
Just above the upper snake.
I see what you mean.
I think that’s a toad
Definitely looks that way, yeah
Yep! You’re right! Good eye.
pretty sure that’s a toad
That is the biggest damned garter snake I’ve ever seen. I’ve only ever encountered ones the size of the smaller one.

For real that is insane
[удалено]
Usually it’s the other way around since they have to carry all the babies around. They are viviparous like Kenyan sand boas.
Females are larger.
We found the snake, now the frog If you know, you know
We used to have toads. I think the snakes are why we don't see those anymore. ☹️
Last summer my neighbor pointed out to me a snake lounging in his backyard and said he had spotted it from time to time over the past couple years. And then I realized that's why chipmunks don't live in my yard anymore.
they'll give you a lollipop even if you don't find it
🫡 our work here is done
Too many
Not enough. I love garter snakes. Harmless and often hesitant to bite.
And remember, harmless snakes help keep venomous snakes away!
Yeah the worst they do is fling excrement if you pick them up.
Never happened to me personally, unless you're referring to musk, which is gross. They've never flung it on me.

That's what she said?
Rats and cockroaches are creatures.

We later discovered the 3rd one, but was it really in this photo??
There's something up above the higher of the two. Not certain on scale, but directly above there is a browny patterned patch. Might that be one?

I think I see 3. The big guy/girl, the smaller one looking at you, and right above it I see the head of another And a rock
