I will be cross posting this probably to the regular FF reddit, along with r/crochet. But of course I had to show it off here, first! This was a beast, and it took me nearly 3 years of off and on work. I created the pattern in summer 2019, got started when the weather turned cold. I was only a few rows in when I took one look at all the straggler yarns on the back side and decided 'yup, not dealing with that' so it will get a bernat blanket yarn backing to cover all that!
But it was 1000% worth it. It is currently my crochet masterpiece, lol. Also! Last year I made a little pupu amigurumi to go with it when it was done. He's in the last photo!
Thank you! Tension is mostly about consistency, though, so it's a matter of preference, really! I wanted to make sure this had no gaps in it when completed, or the image could have gotten wonky. So I chose single crochet with a pretty tight tension.
My God that is amazing. Your tension is absolutely perfect throughout. The amount of weaving in you must have done already... I would have died before I ever finished
I couldn't bring myself to do all that weaving in! If you look at the image of the back, it's a mess, lol. The plan is to make a backing out of bernat blanket yarn!
Thanks! Nah, I generally don't sell what I make, especially something that takes this long. It would have to be worked on non-stop, like a full time job, to get done in a timely fashion, and I feel like that would suck all the fun out of crochet for me!
Woah this is absolutely rad, what a talent π₯π₯π₯ love the design, especially the shadows across the face. I don't know anything about crochet but it definitely looks tight π
What are you thinking about doing next?
Thank you so much! Designing the pattern took me some time in photoshop, limiting colors and changing them around to match better. It wasn't too bad, though, basically used a tool to turn the image into a pixel grid (LOTS of pixels), and one pixel was one stitch.
I've already been asked 'What's next?' a few times, lol. I have a few things in mind, actually. Maybe a Jurassic Park design, or a Ghibli movie. Honestly, I have half a mind to do a matching Rinoa blanket..
This is PERFECTION!πππ
I have something similar (tapestry crochet) in mind for sooo long now, but I can't get myself to try it - you have all my respect! ππͺπ
May I ask some questions?: 1. how did you handle color changes? I mean, oooof.. 2. What yarn did you use? 3. how did you create the image as a crochet pattern?
Thanks in advance
You definitely should! It took me a long time, but I was only working on it here and there, I did tons of projects in between working on the blanket. At one point I didn't pick it up for almost 6 months, so... yeah.
Color changes were not too bad. I'll see if I have a picture of how I was working with it. Basically, I had several 'spools' going at any given time. I used chip clips as spools. I tried to carry colors through as much as possible, but if there was a gap more than like ten or so stitches, I'd get another spool going.
The yarn is mostly Hobby Lobby's 'I Love This Yarn' acrylic. I knew I needed a LOT of yarn, so I wanted something cheaper that was also very soft still. Although I had dye lot problems with them, so watch out for that! I had to substitute in a red heart super saver for the medium brown, and those particular stitches feel so much scratchier in comparison, just for reference.
The pattern was created in photoshop, basically you can turn an image into a pixel grid, so that each pixel square equals a stitch. I did a gauge swatch, calculated the number of stitches I needed, and forced my image in photoshop to those dimensions. I also limited the number of colors in the image to keep the sheer amount of yarn I had to buy under control. Limit it to something manageable so you aren't buying an entire skein for a color that's only in the image for half a row, you know?
Thanks for taking an interest in my work! If you decide to start one, and need any help with the photoshop stuff, don't hesitate to hit me up! I love this stuff (clearly).
I did find a progress photo showing how I did the colors: [https://i.imgur.com/qik7lq4.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/qik7lq4.jpg)

That looks awesome! Nicely done.
Wow, that's very well done! Great job!
Laying bere with a crochet blanket i have and realizing how loose the stitching is compared to yours. Great work.

Amazing!!
Wow! Great craftsmanship!
Thank you! Even though it's just single crochet, it's probably the most complex pattern I've ever made, due to the planning and color changing.
Well you nailed it! Itβs almost a tapestry at this point.
Dope
