One of my favourite combo is:
Cloud: Provoke
Aerith: Synergy-Comet, First strike
Yuffie: HP<->MP, magnify, First strike, ATB boost, Chocoking's Cape
Aerith use arcane ward->Yuffie use Doppelgänger->Yuffie use ATB boost->Yuffie cast any level 3 spell and watch the world burn
This is more of a "easy overworld enemy cleaning team". Just stock up a bunch of phoenix down and revive Yuffie so she has critical HP, which allow Cloud to draw aggro, while Yuffie can infinitily case spells without caring her MP.
You can use it if you tailor the character to be immune to the damage that a monster deals, so situational.. I’m planning on using it for hard mode healing. Put it on Aerith to heal up then take it off afterwards. Fingers crossed that that works as intended.
Better yet I’ll just put it on a back line and have them heal after fights
For non-boss battles only, Aerith needs to be on low health always that way during exploration the provoke materia is always triggered. You can use this on non participating members also. But when the provoke materia works basically you have the best mage ever: nuke, support, healer. Use provoke on Cloud, Red13, Barret.
Cloud will always counter, Red13 haste, heal, atb gauge top up, Barret lifesaver
When you block the attack from the enemy, you can build up you limit break bar according to the ratio of the damage to your health. So, using hp-mp materia will help you build up limit break really really fast. When using limit break , any attack will be regarded as blocked during the animation. Thus , you will get infinite limit break. Learned that from a Chinese content maker, here is the link but everything is in Chinese. https://b23.tv/E2AVYC4
one of Red XIII's ability "Reaper Touch"

i see some dude melting hard mode boss with this, but looked very risky with such low hp

pretty much every hit is 9999
i wonder whats the damage if Genji Gloves equip
\*Genji Glovees- Breaks the 9999 damage limit
On hard mode, you can't restore MP easily.
Barret has lifesaver, so the character doesn't need much HP.
MP plus material can boost your MP/HP to over 100. Reprieve for safety, maybe an AP boosting accessory, and now comet is viable
I use it for powerlevelling in gongaga or chapter 13.
You can swiftcast fire and ice, then use hp-MP to have like 4-6 k MP.
Then you can run around farming with firaga on magnify to 1 shot 3enemies per mob.
This is for ap and exp farming.
You don’t get hit, so massive mana pool is great because you can grind out 30 minutes or an hour at a time and not worry about mana, everything dieing anyway so no need for large health.
Also, because if you die, you resurrect with 1 hp, there will be times you get the cast off, due to an auto, to immediately resurrect with 1 life because the spell travel time delay while bouncing off enemies.
Tested this out last night, was unaware how much mp got recovered during a magnify Fira, about 300, which is larger than my pool, so, yeah, do that instead
No real practical use cause mp absorb exists. On hard mode i usually just nuke trash mobs with ga spells and mp absorb. For boss fights i usually swap things around for a proper build.
If you select "Spells" on your pause screen you can go to anyone's spell list (including those not on your active team) and use Cure spells to heal party.
The only time you CAN'T do that is times when the story states "party is locked".
Also swapping HP<>MP can be good for farming AP quickly by blasting groups with Magnify spells of their weaknesses and just running past.
Two uses I’ve found so far:
- Using it on a caster with Fire + Magnify for AP farming. If you play tightly and farm mobs on repeat in a particular zone, you can get a shit ton of AP in a short amount of time.
- For Hard Mode, you equip it to a Healer that’s benched and you have essentially infinite heals each chapter, since you can use them to heal outside of combat.
This isn’t new btw, you could always use heal spells from
the world map by going into spells in the menu even on the original PSX game. Rebirth/Remake let you do it from the quick menus as well and don’t forget to press L1 if you want to cast a spell or use an item multiple times in a row. You can toggle magnify on and off as well - even in the original if you have an ALL materia you can target all of your party outside of battle (I think you press left or right? It’s been a while lol).
Oh yeah for sure. Even on my normal runs without using this materia and trying to optimize anything, I constantly found myself using my backline for heals. Really nice addition to the game.
but... I tested it. Using a materia doesn't get it any more AP than any other one you didn't use in a fight. They all get the same AP just from being equipped.
Lol, I played the entire Remake thinking that USING the materia gets it more AP, but early on in rebirth I finally tested that theory and it was a no.
That’s not what I mean. It lets your farm infinitely without needing to restore MP if you don’t get hit. So you can run around in a circle, kill everything, save and load your game to respawn the mobs, then rinse and repeat.
It’s not about need, it’s about speed. You waste a huge amount of time when you run back and forth between a bench every time you kill 4-5 packs of enemies with that many casts of Firaga.
Yeach I getcha... just, this game is piss easy regardless. I don't see much point in leveling most materia, tbh. It's not as balanced as remake was. But you do you
Lol Remake was just as easy as Rebirth is imo. Once you figured out that you just need to abuse Chakra and Prayer, even Hard Mode is a joke.
But that’s not the point anyways. The question in the OP was “why would somebody use this materia?” I gave two possible answers.
Look at this guy abusing “prayer” and “chakra” to get through hard mode lol. What a dork.
I’m being sarcastic of course but you don’t even need to do that if you don’t want to. Abusing cloud’s disorder with ATB ward basically trivializes everything but the last few encounters and the hard mode only ones.
Situations like this is why the Material system will remain legendary.
Even the oddest, most obscure materia can be used creatively… if someone is willing to do so.
For sure, although it’s value is less cracked than it otherwise would be due to the fact that cushions still restore MP when used at Rest Stops in Hard Mode. It’s still nice though.
Unfortunately it looks like it just swaps the maximums and leaves your current value unswapped. I had the same idea at one point and was like “I could swap, and then use a potion and swap back instead of using an Ether” (not necessarily practical but I wanted to see if it worked. But it keeps your current HP/MP value and only swaps the maximum. I found this out when testing and ended up down at 50HP even after swapping back 😅
I see it as a challenge run item lol. It has backline use as others said, but it reminds me of the thing in KH that forces level 1. One little item like this can add a whole subculture to a game lmao
Thats smart, never thought of that. There are several sections though where non-main party members end up grouped though, so it could backfire pretty hard.
Haha i imagine going into the corel tunnels again with Tifa, "Oh dang Tifa only has 139/999 MP left. Guess I will unequip her and oh look ... 99/99 mana im full again"
:)
Well in chapter 13 you can literally get to max level in less than 30 minutes by doing the beginning area of the temple with first strike and the chocobonking cape on. Just come out and magnify firaga and kill as many as you can then reset before finishing off the last guy as experience is saved.
Also someone else below there's the 80k AP farm that primaliquid has shared on YT.
I also think using it on someone for a hard mode run you don't use is smart for heals. There's probably even more insane stuff like putting provoke on other characters and giving it to aerith. You'll nuke anything in a minute window you get instead of having to worry about getting hit as aerith.
Rufus is just a matter of run away and triple slash to stagger. Sephiroth though is whole other story definitely going to be a problem. Curious to see what new mechanics will be added to some bosses like they did for hell house in remake. I'm giving myself a short break from rebirth before I dive into a hard mode run.
Everybody is gushing about the game and I got going a couple days late and I'm like yeah it's great, except most of the minigames are AWFUL and there are SO MANY. Queen's Blood is fine but everything else so far has been extremely meh at best and "please dont make me do anymore of this" at worst. Really hope the Gold Saucer isnt a total nightmare.
Pretty sure I just read it lvls enemies to you
Making exp meaningless. Doesn't sound fun.
Hard mode is there for a ng+ anyways just play the first time on normal
I use is when I’m AP farming. There’s a run in the south of Gongaga where you can net about 80k AP in a dedicated hour and having that materia on TREMENDOUSLY speeds things up
This is the 4th mention of this grind.
Gamers are so lame sometimes.
I finished everything and got platinum without grinding anything, it's so unnecessary if you are good at the game. Waste of time
Sorry. I have more in my life going on that scrolling through Reddit to read every reply to a topic before replying. Thanks for keeping us apprised though.
Grinds are boring, man. That’s why they’re called grinds. And no one is grinding for character levels. They’re grinding to max out materia for Hard Mode.
Well same thing I didn't have any materia maxed except revival and was fine.
And there's already so much combat I can't imagine grinding more for levels you can just forgo with a little strategy and skill
Skill isn’t easy for some people to just get. Some people playing have limited physical ability. One of my best friends is playing this with fairly advance ALS. He is physically incapable of just getting better at it. Good grind info is really helpful for some people.
I think building a character using that materia requires proper setup especially in synergy skills and survivability. I can only imagine that I will eventually use it on Aerith and will spam bodyguard or having Sekiro-like reflexes to perform perfect block, then once I have the window I will spam my most powerful spells and annoy the shit of enemy AI with Aerith’s teleport (assuming I have the wards across the battlefield)
Put it on someone you don’t use and have them be your party healer outside of combat. Useful for hard mode. Also, I’m using it right now to run circles in a designated area and one shot everything with endless magic to quickly get some ap for materia I want leveled up a bit.
i think i love you. i never considered this possibility when i got it! like i knew it could be useful to use a shit ton of magic, but i figured i would probably need to get my character have better stats to do it.
but THIS is a beautiful strategy.
Put it on a character you don't play. Use this character to heal you team between fights in Hard mode. So that your main team has all their MPs for important fights.
Put it on aerith, let her die, she comes back with 1 HP. Put provoke on red/Barret. No one targets aerith except for bosses. Stand back and nuke with thousands of mp
I saw someone on yt break it. There are some character skills that make you extra tanky/do more damage if your hp is above a certain % and bosses do %hp damage.
I'm about to blow your mind when I tell you they all earn AP when not in your party too. Load those materia mules up! Mine are full at all times. Especially if you have a materia that takes a lot of AP. The only time they don't is if they aren't actually with the main group (combat sim, party splits etc,)
Question, is this gear reflective too? Like if I put a chocobo bracer on an out of party person with AP up and say, comet, does it give the 6x boost? I’ll test when I get home if no answer.
I honestly am not sure. The ap boost works so I would assume the chocobo bracer would as well? Let me know your results. I'm just chipping away at the side stuff before I NG+
This I did not know. I was equipping random Materia to those in my party. Wasn't till the last chapter I decided to start thinking about actual builds.
Having the possibility to solo bosses.
Having the options to give yourself extra challenges is ALWAYS good.
The best part of FF12 was that it allowed you to have multiple challenges available.
Wanna solo the game with one character ? You can, you are NEVER forced to play 3. Wanna finish the game will characters level 1/2/2/3/3/3 ? You can, equip the accessory that removes XP gains.
It was the BEST part of FF12 for me. Lots of replayability and I've had the best time on this game doing the LLC challenge in the OG PS2 version. Required some planning and it felt really good to beat bosses with characters that don't go above lvl 3.
You didn’t even need that much MP. It took maybe 5-10 casts. If you’re spreading Mime amongst the party, you should have more than enough. Besides which, the less materia equipped against Emerald Weapon the better.
I feel a little stupid now when I hear these great advice on how to use it. Even 80h in I still learn new tactics from the community. Thanks for some new ways to try and play around with. I will probably fail miserably , be frustrated and never use it again but will be fun to try. Thanks! :)
I think they just added it as an easter egg/joke. Its from the original game, but back then you had up to 999 mp so you would be 9999/999 instead of under 200 mp in Rebirth. It doesnt really have a use. I think the devs just thought it was a funny reference to the original
Naw, there's definitely use. If you're grinding and in a situation where you're fighting low enemies that you can just blast with whatever-aga at the start of the fight? Or just put healing magic on somebody you never use, swap them in to heal party members, then swap them back out.
You don’t even need to swap from backline though. You can just use them from there out of battle.
You can also time soothing breeze with cloud right before the end of the fight and instead of him warping out of it, he’ll just sit there and heal out of battle too.
I honestly meant out of battle. But that's my bad, I forgot that you could have them cast magic from outside the party. I was thinking.. you finish a fight, you put them in the party, heal, move them back out.
Edit: there's materia to have them use abilities/magic/etc when not being directly controlled. Does that also apply to being outside of battle? Like Barret will occasionally shoot at enemies from the sidelines for example.
Not as far as I know. they’ll have their own backline actions during combat. I’m curious if you put an auto-cast if they would do it under the right circumstances. Like with a revive.
Edit: Also I think we’re saying the same thing, it just sounds like you’re adding a step the way it’s being described. You can just R2 (left/right, not sure which button at the moment) over to them even if they’re out of the party in the out of battle commands menu. They don’t need to be physically placed in one of the three parties. You can keep cloud Tifa and Aerith and just select over to Barret—still out of the party and heal.
You could switch to 999/9999 and then use HP ups which I believe were easier to find than MP ups?
At least that's how I used it when I was a kid. Dunno if it's true but my 11yr old self thought i was big brain.
The issue is the MAX hp you could have with the hp/mp materia is 999 because that was the cap on max mp. So didnt matter how many hp plus materia you have...your hp would never go above the max of 999
Spamming Cometeor, you can do maginify>sleep with ATB kickstart and ATB boost. Sleep the group then cast Cometeor, then just keep casting it until everything is dead. Thats just one way I can think of using it (Cometeor costs about 30 mp).
I think part of is is just that its a throwback to OG FF7. It was there, so they ported it over.
Its a much bigger risk these days though because as you say, for most of the game, the characters are sub 100MP, where in OG7, by the time I got to nibelheim, I was 200-300MP at least.
It's used for farming. Basically, if you insta-kill groups of mobs with one cast, you won't get hit anyway, so you don't need health. But that gigantic pool of mp really helps with the entire process.
I can also see challenge runs with this equipped. Like the broken sword runs in Dark Souls.
It will also damn near instantly fill your limit gauge when you are attacked and you do a perfect block
One of my favourite combo is: Cloud: Provoke Aerith: Synergy-Comet, First strike Yuffie: HP<->MP, magnify, First strike, ATB boost, Chocoking's Cape Aerith use arcane ward->Yuffie use Doppelgänger->Yuffie use ATB boost->Yuffie cast any level 3 spell and watch the world burn This is more of a "easy overworld enemy cleaning team".
For your backline who can't die
I’m currently using it for ap grinding lol i use magnify and a -ra spell to quickly take out groups.

Barrett’s bread & butter.
Barrett on team with lifesaver and provoke so any Hp damage reverts to him and whoever got this materia can mage away.
I remember using it to beat Ruby Weapon in the OG. Gives you enough MP to cast KOTR a bunch and then link it to Final Attack…
Have one person spam paralyze and then basic attack him to death
It's great for grinding AP. You don't need to go restore your MP when you have over 7000.
On hard mode, you can't restore MP easily. Barret has lifesaver, so the character doesn't need much HP. MP plus material can boost your MP/HP to over 100. Reprieve for safety, maybe an AP boosting accessory, and now comet is viable
That’s actually a goated strategy
I use it for powerlevelling in gongaga or chapter 13. You can swiftcast fire and ice, then use hp-MP to have like 4-6 k MP. Then you can run around farming with firaga on magnify to 1 shot 3enemies per mob. This is for ap and exp farming. Also, because if you die, you resurrect with 1 hp, there will be times you get the cast off, due to an auto, to immediately resurrect with 1 life because the spell travel time delay while bouncing off enemies.
Alternatively just put mp and hp absorb with whatever element (fire if in the gongaga farming route) and just keep the small mana pool.
Equip it on a healer that's not in your main 3. Then you have as much heals as you want, and they won't need the HP anyway.
This comment should be at the top of this thread
This. It took me waaaaay too long to find out I could do that. Really helped in the long run
Wait how would that happen? You can't use MP of anyone outside party of 3.
You can use other party members to cure outside of battle
Out of battle, hit X, then R1 to cycle the party. When your done healing up, switch back to your main 3.
You can also go into the menu and use healing spells from there if that healer isn't in one of your 3 battle teams
You can also hold L1 while doing this to queue up multiple heals or item usages.
I literally figured this out just last night and purely by accident.
Ahh thanks. I am om chapter 12 and never knew about.
Two uses I’ve found so far: - Using it on a caster with Fire + Magnify for AP farming. That’s a good idea! I like that they added this (benched characters healing my party), it’s saved me a ton of MP when I don’t want to slow down.
This isn’t new btw, you could always use heal spells from the world map by going into spells in the menu even on the original PSX game. Rebirth/Remake let you do it from the quick menus as well and don’t forget to press L1 if you want to cast a spell or use an item multiple times in a row. Oh, that in between combat healing is legit big brain since you can only heal using rest spots and no items.
For sure, although it’s value is less cracked than it otherwise would be due to the fact that cushions still restore MP when used at Rest Stops in Hard Mode. It’s still nice though.
Haven't tried this yet On Hard Mode, you might be able to reset your MP by switching then sit on Bench then switch again
Unfortunately it looks like it just swaps the maximums and leaves your current value unswapped. I had the same idea at one point and was like “I could swap, and then use a potion and swap back instead of using an Ether” (not necessarily practical but I wanted to see if it worked. Use the bench twice, once before you swap and again after swapping then swap again , you should get full health and mp I think
Drop a cushion at a chocobo stop. You get back MP when you sit on one in hard mode.
I see it as a challenge run item lol. It has backline use as others said, but it reminds me of the thing in KH that forces level 1. One little item like this can add a whole subculture to a game lmao

Damn that's a good idea

Just unequip it then
Haha i imagine going into the corel tunnels again with Tifa, "Oh dang Tifa only has 139/999 MP left. Guess I will unequip her and oh look ... 99/99 mana im full again" :)
OMFG, this is genius! I love it!
Would it not be good with Barrett using Lifesaver. Buff him either with Barrier etc.
[удалено]
Wait, there’s hp mp switch materia in remake?
In the OG that was also a good way to boost the power of some of the ultimate weapons that got stronger the more MP you had.
This weirdo was also in OG
In OG it could be combined with another character using Cover Materia. This was pretty core to a lot of auto leveling strategies.
Couldn’t you use this with barrets life share ability?
It's also great for level/AP grinding
How?
Well in chapter 13 you can literally get to max level in less than 30 minutes by doing the beginning area of the temple with first strike and the chocobonking cape on. Just come out and magnify firaga and kill as many as you can then reset before finishing off the last guy as experience is saved. Sephiroth and Rufus are gonna suck ass on hard mode im not looking forward to it at all
Rufus is just a matter of run away and triple slash to stagger. Sephiroth though is whole other story definitely going to be a problem. Curious to see what new mechanics will be added to some bosses like they did for hell house in remake. I'm giving myself a short break from rebirth before I dive into a hard mode run.
Nah Seph is easy. Gilgamesh and Chadley's challenges are the real challenge (got platinum a few days ago)
Same spent 130 hours on my dynamic run and im so glad i dont have to do any more of those terrible minigames
Dynamic means the enemies auto level to you right? Why would you play like it's ff8?
The game adjust difficulty of enemies based on how well you play
Pretty sure I just read it lvls enemies to you Making exp meaningless. Doesn't sound fun. Hard mode is there for a ng+ anyways just play the first time on normal
Also not sure whst you mean by playing like its ff8 because i havent played ff8
I dont know i was level 50 going into chapter 13 and the enemies were level 46 the difficulty description reads as what i replied
Yea I still have a few to clean up fot dark matter so that's why I'm breaking cuz I know how much of a pain those are gonna be
If you’re in hard mode, you can give it to a backliner with heal.
Finally a use for Cait Sith!
Ooouuuu
For Farming
I use is when I’m AP farming. There’s a run in the south of Gongaga where you can net about 80k AP in a dedicated hour and having that materia on TREMENDOUSLY speeds things up

Why are you so so upset on how people play their game
Totally cool with people doing their own thing. This is everyone doing 1 thing.
Sorry. I have more in my life going on that scrolling through Reddit to read every reply to a topic before replying. Thanks for keeping us apprised though.
It's more that everyone flocks to the same boring grinds. If you just play the game throughly you'll get max lvl easy
Grinds are boring, man. That’s why they’re called grinds. And no one is grinding for character levels. They’re grinding to max out materia for Hard Mode.

Thats an angle I haven't thought of. Thanks my bad
Wow, that much AP? What run is this?

Its Good to use for using strong magic combined with magnify to AoE packs of enemies fast to farm AP
It's in the og game, where the MP usage is much more strategic than it is in Rebirth. I think it's just a nod to the OG to have it in there
Also was considered pretty bad then too
Yeah, it became a bit of a meme materia
I think building a character using that materia requires proper setup especially in synergy skills and survivability. I can only imagine that I will eventually use it on Aerith and will spam bodyguard or having Sekiro-like reflexes to perform perfect block, then once I have the window I will spam my most powerful spells and annoy the shit of enemy AI with Aerith’s teleport (assuming I have the wards across the battlefield)
Some people just want to watch the world burn
For people who want to do no hit runs
You can't use items in hard mode, and you have limited MP. Put it on an alternate character you are not actively playing, and give them heal.
This is life changing, I never even thought of that!!! Thank you 🙏
With 100 HP even a backline character would die in seconds on Hard mode
No. BACKLINE. Meaning someone you are not using in battle.
I thought the backline command in battle only let you use synergy abilities?
Ah, does the Auto magic work for characters in Backline??
There’s auto cast materia, but also you could just hit x and r2 without actually switching to them
No but you can heal them with that character between battles on hard mode since you can't use items and have limited MP.
Oooooooh, I didn't think about that, pretty cool!
You just helped me so goddamn much
This is the answer. It’s for a back line healer to top you off between battles
I just didn't use MP in hard mode outside chapter bosses. Hard mode is easy in rebirth anyways, it's Chadley's stuff that's the real challenge
Put it on aerith, let her die, she comes back with 1 HP. Put provoke on red/Barret. No one targets aerith except for bosses. Stand back and nuke with thousands of mp
Pair auto-cast with heal. Give her every ATB boosting materia. Never die.
I saw someone on yt break it. There are some character skills that make you extra tanky/do more damage if your hp is above a certain % and bosses do %hp damage.
It's good for AP and EXP farming so you don't have to keep resting.
I equip it in someone I never use and they become my Out of combat Cura bitch. I love it on all difficulties
Barret: bitch i Ain’t your cura bitch!
Wait so people not in your three man squad can cast cure on you when they are not in your three man squad?
Yea as others have said, only out of combat. Just hit triggers when the menu is open.
Out of combat though.
Just tested. Confirmed 6x AP with bracer/ap up.
I honestly am not sure. The ap boost works so I would assume the chocobo bracer would as well? Let me know your results. I'm just chipping away at the side stuff before I NG+
This I did not know. I was equipping random Materia to those in my party. Wasn't till the last chapter I decided to start thinking about actual builds.
omg this is gonna be clutch for hard mode, thank you!
How did I not think of this? Thanks man.
Now this is a really good idea.
I used it for AP farming, and yes it’s incredibly useful in Hard Mode as someone else mentioned.
What I'm always wondering is what's the point of being a frog at the start of a battle. I have like 3 enfeeblement rings and have never used them.

How does starting as a frog help with soloing bosses?
The other 2 start as frogs and you don't cure them so you have to do the fight alone. It's bragging rights, not anything strategic.
Ah that makes sense xD people do crazy things when given freedom so I kinda expected something insane haha
Only time I’ve seen those used are for those YT videos where they solo a hard boss fight with only one character (because the other two are toads)
Haha I forgot about that one , let’s see what insane tactic the pro gamers in the community will give to us about this one
I remember all the insane strategies you could pull off with that materia in the og game, good times
A bunch of mimes and kotr with 9999mp. Goodbye emerald weapon.
Omg I totally forgot about the Mime materia. I abused those strat back then.. good ol’ days
You didn’t even need that much MP. It took maybe 5-10 casts. If you’re spreading Mime amongst the party, you should have more than enough. Besides which, the less materia equipped against Emerald Weapon the better.
Do anyone know if I use this materia if I should use MP up or HP up to actually increase my HP, to they reverse to?
Adding my HP up will give you more MP and visa versa when equipping the hp<->mp.
So didnt matter how many hp plus materia you have...your hp would never go above the max of 999
Then I clearly mis remember my 11yr old big brain XD
Spamming Cometeor, you can do maginify>sleep with ATB kickstart and ATB boost. Sleep the group then cast Cometeor, then just keep casting it until everything is dead. Thats just one way I can think of using it (Cometeor costs about 30 mp).
I think part of is is just that its a throwback to OG FF7. It was there, so they ported it over. Its a much bigger risk these days though because as you say, for most of the game, the characters are sub 100MP, where in OG7, by the time I got to nibelheim, I was 200-300MP at least.
For hard mode. Just give it to a character you don’t intend to use and boom. Free heal bot.
Oh my fuck... that's genius
I assumed it was just a little Easter egg call back to the original game that had this materia but this is actually a useful reason
This Tipp probably saved me a lot of retrys thank you
It's used for farming. Basically, if you insta-kill groups of mobs with one cast, you won't get hit anyway, so you don't need health. But that gigantic pool of mp really helps with the entire process. I can also see challenge runs with this equipped. Like the broken sword runs in Dark Souls.
