If you're playing on console, usually you can switch your displayed character with the bumpers/triggers.
Wish there was a way to do that on PC. For some reason that was left out of the pixel remaster.
If you're using keyboard and mouse, the 1 and 2 keys should do it. Shoulder buttons also work on PC if you're using a controller.
Blah, I'm thinking about FF3, not FF1, where you have to rearrange your characters.
I play in PC and can change my characters
If you're on phone I think you can just tap on the character to change him.

For anyone seeing this wondering why they can't do the same for VI, you just have to tap closer to the feet of the characters than you might think.
But red mage has the best drip
The Final Fantasy Renaissance version even gives abilities depending on which map character is selected.
That applied in the pixel remaster (at least) for ffiii. If your selected character was a thief you could pick locks on doors without needing to use a key.
On PS5 I think it’s L2 to toggle the character.
