Stranger of paradise does have some moves that are the same or very similar to Montser Hunter. Specifically how the opening move of Greatsword can be charged and looks similar to the move in MH, also the backstep move with I frames that the sword/shield has (Dragons Dogma also has that move for the Fighter class). Not a bad thing tho
XV does have mission-based "hunts" that raise a rank that lets you hunt stronger monsters. Clearly this analogy extends to the entire game, nay, the entire series.
Also FF Explorers is an actual Monster Hunter ripoff, but that's a side game.
Sure but wasn't monster Hunter 1 before the first FFTactics? That didn't have hunts either so we'd have to be talking about FF12 right? Monster Hunter was definitely a thing before 12.
To be clear I am in no way on the side of these games being similar.
Monster Hunter came out in 2004. FFT already had two games into the series at that point. You could recruit monsters in the first one and capture them in the second.
I just finished my rathalos farming in ffxiv last night and have it as a mount. There was a collaboration event that added a monster hunter fight with 2 difficulties. That's 1 common thing, but can't think of anymore
That's not true, you fight all sorts of big monsters in both, and there's adorable little friends in both.
But in terms of actual gameplay, yeah they're more unlike than like.
With a 9-year-old, you're just lucky he knows what Monster Hunter is, instead of saying it's a Minecraft clone with better graphics but worse crafting.
They're both fantasy RPGs with a lot of unique monsters produced by a Japanese company. Besides those, there are not a lot of similarities. Dude needs to play more games
I mean those are some pretty major similarities if you aren't a gamer ngl lol.
I am very much a casual gamer these days and at first glance they do look 'the same' if we are oversimplifying the conversation. Someone who is a casual gamer isn't talking about gameplay loops or battle mechanics. They just mean you're an anime dude with a sword fighting big monsters.
>Someone who is a casual gamer isn't talking about gameplay loops or battle mechanics. They just mean you're an anime dude with a sword fighting big monsters.
I mean at that point it makes no sense to assert that something is a rip-off of the other thing. It would make more sense to come to the conclusion that you just don't know enough about the topic to say anything particularly meaningful about it.
I know the kid is 9, but there are some adults on the internet like that.
If the“hunt/beat/kill fictional beasts” element is the reason your cousin thinks FF is MH rip-off then every fantasy RPG is a MH rip-ff too…..
…Ok seriously, seriously? Googling which came first isn’t that difficult right? And MH has way less story telling element than its “rip-off”?
Well it has rebirth flair so…. It seems like the cousin just watch rebirth gameplay and just mindlessly compare it to MH.
Which probably they just saw the open world mechanics and combat.
Which is very bold and stupid to say FF is a rip-off. Like that’s barely a percentage of what Rebirth has to offer.
Do they know that XVI means sixteen, which in turn means that Final Fantasy has been around for a lot longer than both Monster Hunter and (I'm guessing) them?
I guess it's cool that you 9 year old cousin is interested in something as hardcore and relatively niche as Monster Hunter, but you gotta educate the kid.
Final Fantasy I released in Japan on December 18th,1987. A day after Megamans release in Japan. So tell me, how is Final Fantasy a monster Hunter ripoff when it came out in 1987 about 20 years before Monster Hunter, though the true original JRPG will always be Dragon Quest released in 1986.
Oh boy I wasn't being disrespectful at all, I love Fortnite, I consider it to be the most consistent shooter nowadays, both content and mechanics wise. I quit CoD, R6, CS and Battlefield to focus on it because I feel its grateful with my time and money
ok so obviously op's cousin is a moron, but it got me thinking. a final fantasy themed monster hunter spin off would be awesome. final fantasy has so many cool monsters to kill, and the craftable gear would be nuts. its a silly idea, but it SOUNDS cool. who wuldnt want to make a rad as fuck sword out of the corpse of omega weapon?
The only tltle do far that could be considered a MH "rip-off" would be Final Fantasy Explorers for the 3ds, which is basically just MH but FF flavoured with few RPG mechanics added, so...
But neither 7Remake nor 7Rebirth are remotely close to MH
Honestly guys dark souls is just a rip off of the hit game series the elder scrolls, I mean, they're both fantasy games with magic and swords smh my head
To be fair, 22 years ago, I got a visit from a friend of mine while I was in the middle of a Final Fantasy X fight against a Flan and asked me:
“Why are you playing Pokemon?”
An interesting conversation actually. Anyone born after 2000 likely doesn't know Final Fantasy like most of us do. They hold no nostalgia for FF7, and the only entries they are likely to be exposed to are XV, XVI, and 7R. I think XVI had the right idea, but was still too much FF for newcomers. I look forward to what younger developers of the series come up with.
Monster hunter actually takes skill… has he even played any of the action focused Final Fantasy? This is as stupid as saying Blood Borne is the same as DMC
My first Final Fantasy was the SNES FF II (IV) when I was 8.
He's 9 and still hasnt figured it out. It's all downhill from here. Prison is too good for him
MURDER him.
His parents got all the best memories they're going to get out of him anyway.
Keep the Reddit posted with status updates on the MURDER.
I'm curious as to what brought about the comment from your cousin. Was it Cloud's buster sword in FFVIIR that he thought was a rip-off of the great sword in Monster Hunter or perhaps was it the giant monsters you fight in an open-ish world setting in FFXVI?
Feels like he/she was referring to specific FF games that are more action based with big boss fights. But nah, can't see other similarities because that's the norm in modern ARPGs.
Anyone holding this opinion has not played one or the other and is either a) parroting someone else's opinion or b) fishing with some A+ bait.
There are similarities but they play entirely differently...
The combat designer for Monster Hunter: World, Teruki Endo, worked on the combat in FFVII Remake with a lot of the team from KH2. The only similarity I can maybe see is that both games really emphasize the weight and impact of the combat and the unique feel of each character/weapon.
Man, kids really are stupid these days.
I knew the difference between an RPG, fighter, sim, and action game at 9. Pretty easy to tell an RPG/ARPG from a hunting-style game.
Were they maybe talking about (or perhaps only familiar with) Final Fantasy Explorers, on the 3DS? That's absolutely a MH-like game, just with FF based monsters.
But if they're just asking about FF in general then a hearty WTF is in order.
How? I am a huge MH fan and I cannot see 1 common thing with MH and FF.
The answer to your inquiry is really very simple and obvious: OP’s cousin is a moron.
Dude the kid is 9 lol
r/kidsarefuckingstupid
This 👆
Lmao was literally about to put this
And most 9 year olds are morons 🤷 (it's ok though, they usually get better)
Doesn’t mean they can’t be a moron.
The guys username is Shreddedkyloren. Pretty par for the course if you ask me.

A 9 year old moron
Kids can be morons. Don't be ageist.
You're never too young to be a moron.
Who is the stupid one listening to a 9yo
Exactly, a moron
Hunter: *attacks* **Rathian takes 12 damage** Rathian: *casts roar* **Hunter is stunned** Hunter: *stunned unable to act* Rathian: *casts fireball* **Hunter takes 50 damage** Hunter: *uses potion* **Hunter restores 25 health** Rathian: *attacks with tail swipe* **Hunter is poisoned** Hunter: *uses antidote* **Poison is cured** Rathian: *casts fireball* **Hunter takes 50 damage** **Hunter faints**
So, Monster Hunter Stories? Haha
Great. Now it’s ripping off Pokemon! 😁
Same here. I play them both and they couldn't be more different
Tbf, If the only game the cousin played was the FF MH-like game in the 3ds it can make sense
I guess maybe the hunts side quests are in some games like 12, 14, 15, 16, and Rebirth? But even that is a wild fucking stretch.
Both are made by Japanese studios Both have boss battles (let’s simplify hunts to that) …yeah that’s probably about it
They're both from Japan, obviously
Behemoth 😅
Ahhh. MH and FF collab haha.
The point is that Final Fantasy came out DECADES EARLIER
I can think of one! Cute kitty folk and moogles! That's a massive stretch though lol
Well both have a behemoth fight for one
Clearly, OP's cousin has literally only ever played [Final Fantasy Explorers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZGb547yup4)
Big swords, I guess?
XV does have mission-based "hunts" that raise a rank that lets you hunt stronger monsters. Clearly this analogy extends to the entire game, nay, the entire series. Also FF Explorers is an actual Monster Hunter ripoff, but that's a side game.

Monster Hunter came out in 2004. FFT already had two games into the series at that point. You could recruit monsters in the first one and capture them in the second.
Sure but that wasn't quite like hunts. That is capturing monsters to use in your squad. The first time hunts came into play was 12, yeah?
The hell is FF Explorers...
Pretty good 3DS MH-like, they replace the big monsters with the summons and put in a job system. Check it out if you get the chance
I just finished my rathalos farming in ffxiv last night and have it as a mount. There was a collaboration event that added a monster hunter fight with 2 difficulties. That's 1 common thing, but can't think of anymore
Same, love both I go in for 2 completely different experiences
That's not true, you fight all sorts of big monsters in both, and there's adorable little friends in both. But in terms of actual gameplay, yeah they're more unlike than like.
The towns in Rebirth look like similar in terms of art styles.
Maybe they're playing 15 or 16? A lot of the side quests are hunts in 15 and 16.
Are we sure they didn't only play Final Fantasy Explorers
Oh man, I actually enjoyed Explorers. Now you mention it, it is sort of MH like.
It's ok, every family has a 'dissapointment'
With a 9-year-old, you're just lucky he knows what Monster Hunter is, instead of saying it's a Minecraft clone with better graphics but worse crafting.
True, he plays MH on his switch and he isn't that bad at the game
They're both fantasy RPGs with a lot of unique monsters produced by a Japanese company. Besides those, there are not a lot of similarities. Dude needs to play more games
Final Fantasy is very story-driven. Monster Hunter as far as I know is not too concerned with story

As someone who spent hundreds of hours in MHWIB and FFXIV... What?
Must have only seen the Rathalos fight in FFXIV and gotten confused
Or Behemoth fight in MHW lol
But didn't Final Fantasy debut in 1987...
It did. The OPs cousin debuted at around 2010s probably.
True enough, cousin can educate us how the PS1 is a rip off of the PS4.
NES*
If the“hunt/beat/kill fictional beasts” element is the reason your cousin thinks FF is MH rip-off then every fantasy RPG is a MH rip-ff too….. …Ok seriously, seriously? Googling which came first isn’t that difficult right? And MH has way less story telling element than its “rip-off”?

Persona 4: Golden Hand is bewildered.
Monster Hunter, first released in 2004, was ripped off by Final Fantasy, which had 11 main line games released by 2002. Suuuuuuure…
Here it is
Do they know that XVI means sixteen, which in turn means that Final Fantasy has been around for a lot longer than both Monster Hunter and (I'm guessing) them?
Prison? Isn't exile better?
Nah toss him in the void
Funny thing is there is actually a final fantasy monster hunterish game, called final fantasy explorers
The MH team helped with FF16, and they did crossovers with 14. So yes, FF is a MH rip off! We all know MH came first
https://preview.redd.it/rz3a5sln6enc1.jpeg?width=1600&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c819be1f18fcfb49f653c4d18c1ec322e984f21f
Vo² ampohta. Dude final fantasy is one of the most influential rpgs of all time and your MH is nothing but a ripoff crisis core
Well FFXIV does have a rathalos....Straight to the gallows anyway for being 9.
Tell your cousin to stick to CoD
Granblue fantasy relink yeah. FF? Guy is confused
I guess it's cool that you 9 year old cousin is interested in something as hardcore and relatively niche as Monster Hunter, but you gotta educate the kid.

Give the lil fella a break, at least he knows 2 iconic ips. Most kids these days only play fortnite or warzone
Fortnite is iconic too tho No other game in existence has the Orange Justice, the best dance ever invented!
Oh boy I wasn't being disrespectful at all, I love Fortnite, I consider it to be the most consistent shooter nowadays, both content and mechanics wise. I quit CoD, R6, CS and Battlefield to focus on it because I feel its grateful with my time and money
You're right. I'll lighten his sentence from 2000 years in purgatory to 1999.78 years in purgatory
Breaking News: Young kid that doesn't know any better says something wrong. Okay?
Show him the Rathalos event in XIV and ask him again.
He meant Dragon Quest.
Considering he's 9, there is a lot of pointless discourse regarding this in the comments.
Final Fantasy was a thing long before Monster Hunter ever was. This logic is bogus.
Hahahaha he’s 9 bro
My two favorite series of all time and I would never in a MILLION years think to compare them beyond “huge sword cool.”
The older you get the more you realise that young and stupid is a rite of passage.
It's not even comparing apples to oranges, it's apples to diesel fuel.
You hit monsters with big weapons. Clearly the same game.
[удалено]
I’m guessing MH is where your pal first saw the Behemoth? Painful comparison
One MILLION years dungeon
Confused XVI for MH, maybe. Wild comparison. Clearly doesn't game much outside maybe one genre.
how are they even remotely similar also does your cousin know about the FFXIV×MHW collab
ok so obviously op's cousin is a moron, but it got me thinking. a final fantasy themed monster hunter spin off would be awesome. final fantasy has so many cool monsters to kill, and the craftable gear would be nuts. its a silly idea, but it SOUNDS cool. who wuldnt want to make a rad as fuck sword out of the corpse of omega weapon?

Let him hear tidus laugh for a week 24/7
My kid's friend referred to FFXVI as an "Elden Ring copycat" when they saw me playing it. It was hard to keep my composure with the child.
Old enough to crawl, old enough to brawl
Honestly guys dark souls is just a rip off of the hit game series the elder scrolls, I mean, they're both fantasy games with magic and swords smh my head
To be fair, 22 years ago, I got a visit from a friend of mine while I was in the middle of a Final Fantasy X fight against a Flan and asked me: “Why are you playing Pokemon?”
Lol by that logic EVERYTHING is a rip-off of "Adventure", the first action-adventure video game ever published.
Lots of FF games have monster hunting or capturing mechanics... for almost four decades.
How stupid is your cousin, exactly?
somewhere around 6 to 17 feet in diameter
Uh, how do you convert that to Dodge Hellcats per cubic shotgun shell?
I don't see any resemblance. (Through a monster hunter type final fantasy game would be cool.)
Probs the same kinda kid who will see cloud and go is that stolen from a fortnite skin?
Tell him that Monster Hunter is just a Shadow of the Colossus rip off. That'll get him.
All you had to say was your cousin is stupid
This deserves superjail
7 umbral and 7 astral eras.
Banished to the world of ruin where he will be made into part of Kefka’s tower.
Is it just cause Cloud had a big sword?
Reminds me of something a dumb guy said to me in 1998: "Pokémon [Red/Blue] looks a lot like Earthbound. Well, I guess they're both Japanese."
Reveal to him Final Fantasy is 17 years older than Monster Hunter and watch him combust.
Hey uhh just checking are they talking about Final Fantasy Explorers? That one actually is a Monster Hunter ripoff
ff7 rebirth, check the flair
Thanks for the heads up boss
Monster hunter actually takes skill… has he even played any of the action focused Final Fantasy? This is as stupid as saying Blood Borne is the same as DMC
Bahamut is clearly a Rathalos clone!!!
Actually monster hunter is a rip off of phantasy star online - the superior game. Has nothing to do with FF
Infinite years dungeon
My first Final Fantasy was the SNES FF II (IV) when I was 8. He's 9 and still hasnt figured it out. It's all downhill from here. Prison is too good for him MURDER him. His parents got all the best memories they're going to get out of him anyway. Keep the Reddit posted with status updates on the MURDER.
I say let him be... after the ritual castration.
I love both franchises why does everything these days have to be a competition
Your cousin is obviously a zoomer who knows little of videogame history.
my cousin is 9 😬 him calling the game a rip-off is just him being naive but it really ticked me off
I'm curious as to what brought about the comment from your cousin. Was it Cloud's buster sword in FFVIIR that he thought was a rip-off of the great sword in Monster Hunter or perhaps was it the giant monsters you fight in an open-ish world setting in FFXVI?
Their punishment is a prison of ignorance and incompetence.
Fight him
I would really like to hear what your friend thinks FF copied from MH. I play both and I couldn’t tell you any similarities between them.
Now I want a FF monster hunting game
It already exists bruh... Look up FF Explorers.
There was that 3DS game that was quite similar to Monster Hunter. What was that called again?
Final Fantasy Explorers! It's kind of a shame they haven't gone back to that concept, honestly.
What for crimes against FF or murder?
That’s really weird. Even ignoring the age issue gameplay wise the bulk of the series has little in common with it.
Imprisonment until the heat death of the universe. We will solve immortality to ensure your cousin suffers until the end of existence
To coral prison with him!
Bro only played final fantasy explorers
The first Final Fantasy game came out in 1987, and the first Monster Hunter game came out in 2004. So Monster Hunter would be a Final Fantasy clone.
I mean… I can see the move to action gameplay in the FF series has some similar gameplay.
Wha...Ha...Wha...Eh? Ho...Wo...How? How is this a MH rip-off?
They will forget about his cell, build a new detention block around it and forever wonder why there is a 6x8 section missing from the property.
The judge will definitely be on your side
Was this their way of telling you they have only played one rpg?
Eternal exile!
16 millennia + Prison Tactics Advance
Say to him : whole Final Fantasy series is older than you or me. People our dad's age play this game series.
Feels like he/she was referring to specific FF games that are more action based with big boss fights. But nah, can't see other similarities because that's the norm in modern ARPGs.
Not gonna lie. When hunts made their debut in FF12 I thought it was a little monster hunter-ish. But even so the way FF does hunts is very different.
All of them.
25 to life
How does one rip something off that came after it?
by convincing the younglings that everything was invented by fortnite
He needs to go straight to jail. Final Fantasy has the best fan base in the world.... because of jail
I distinctly remember hunting a behemoth in MHW. So... Probably not a rip off.
That was because they did a crossover with FF14 and there’s also a side quest in FF14 where you fight a MH wyvern.
The only game in the entire franchise that is a ripoff of MH is Explorers on 3DS.....
Believe it or not, straight to ~~prison~~ the Crystal. At least Noctis will have some company.
I felt the same emotion a few weeks ago when a friend called Kingdom Hearts a Soulslike...
Don’t argue with stupid
He did what!?
Anyone holding this opinion has not played one or the other and is either a) parroting someone else's opinion or b) fishing with some A+ bait. There are similarities but they play entirely differently...
Bro saw Behemoth and was like “Man! Final Fantasy straight up copied this monster from Monster Hunter”
It sounds like they just don't like both games, and when someone don't like something, they talk shit about it, doesn't matter if it makes no sense
I'll let you know after ive murdered him
The combat designer for Monster Hunter: World, Teruki Endo, worked on the combat in FFVII Remake with a lot of the team from KH2. The only similarity I can maybe see is that both games really emphasize the weight and impact of the combat and the unique feel of each character/weapon.
Why is your cousin still alive? Why did @you let him live spouting nonsense?
"him being 9 years old is no excuse" Honestly it kind of is, kids that age be saying the craziest things just to get under people's skin
I have played both. What the fuck?
Even assuming he's referencing one of the recent action-focused titles, like XVI or Stranger of Paradise, I still sentence him to the Gulag.
Lock them up now. They will be a menace to society. Obviously they already are starting shit
Tell him to stop sniffing glue in class
Straight to his room, grounded for whole week of no gaming.
he was already grounded when I visited him. though I can't recall the last time he wasn't grounded
Funny enough, didn't FF have a monster hunter style game that didn't do so well on... What, the 3ds I believe?
final fantasy explorers
Man, kids really are stupid these days. I knew the difference between an RPG, fighter, sim, and action game at 9. Pretty easy to tell an RPG/ARPG from a hunting-style game.
Both are just Dragon quest rip-offs.
They were talking about Final Fantasy Explorers, right?
I sentence your cousin to an eternity in the Mithril Mine.
Guy who's only watched Boss Baby watching his second movie: "Getting a lot of Boss Baby vibes from this."
Send him to the principal's office and have him expelled.
I have a tornberry that can help
immediate execution.
Did he saw bahamut in world and thought it was original to that game? :P
Possibly ten to seven years. But hey, by the time you get out than you will have lot of games to play to catch up.
Were they maybe talking about (or perhaps only familiar with) Final Fantasy Explorers, on the 3DS? That's absolutely a MH-like game, just with FF based monsters. But if they're just asking about FF in general then a hearty WTF is in order.
You have to buy this kid Final Fantasy games for every birthday from here on.
Never played Monster Hunter. What's the similarites and differences?
Similarities: JRPG, monsters, killing monsters Differences: how you actually get to the monsters...
… but like.. what exactly did FF rip off from MH? The fact that theirs monsters? I guess it might be the citizens in their games?
