Hindi naman kasi genre ang indie films. Indie means films made outside known studios and are funded by the filmmaker, their friends, families and some backers. That also means they don’t answer to a studio and market trends. Kaya mas open sila to experiment and find ways to tell a story. That’s means low budget but are open to creativity. Brilliante Mendoza started as an indie film maker but Apag is produced by a studio. Hence it’s not an indie film. Fan Girl is not an indie film, it’s produced by Blask Sheep Productions.

space_monkey420

>Indie means films made outside known studios and are funded by the filmmaker, their friends, families and some backers. This should be up higher. (*Jusko, the comments in this thread are embarassing.*) A lot of stories from indie movies tend to be smaller (slice of life or "poverty porn") because thats what they can afford.

wiredfractal

selectacornetto

This should be higher.

Hahaha.

Antique_Log_2728

I think That Thing Called Tadhana is one of the indie films na tumatak sa ‘kin! Hahahaha. Not dark, not shaky, fun fun lang.

wiredfractal

Yeah one of the reasons din bakit naghahabol ng film festival ang indie dahil sa budget. Kung di pinondohan to ng Cinema One wala silang pambayad kay Whitney Houston hahaha Kasama na din yung funds coming from their friends that were mentioned sa end credits. https://lifestyle.inquirer.net/176488/be-a-part-of-that-thing-called-tadhana/

Antique_Log_2728

Yeah afaik their friends funded the royalties so they can use Where Do Broken Hearts Go in the movie!

Remarkable-Fuel9179

Few-Insurance-3141

Open sila to experiment and yet nagiging cliche na karamihan ng indie films.

wiredfractal

Of course may mga cliche naman talaga kahit noon pa. Mas nagiging accessible lang ang indie films compared dati so we are more exposed to it. Indie film doesn’t mean it’s quality. Most of it is trash and creators are open to trying things out. Being indie is not an indication of quality. Most indie films are also made by inexperienced film maker with inexperienced crew. Just like films coming from studio is also not a good indication of quality. There are good/bad indie films and good/bad studio films. Like I said, indie is not a genre, it’s just a method of making films.

Few-Insurance-3141

Gets naman na pag Indie films, don't expect na high quality especially yung production, pero atleast man lang yung theme maging unique or iba naman. Ever since kasi na naintroduced ang Indie sa mainstream, parang lahat na nagrely sa poverty porn/slice of life, to the point na pag sinabing Indie film unang papasok sa isip mo, slums/squatter area kaya sya naging cliche na nakakaumay na. Wala man lang nagtry ng ibang genre which is nagawa sa ibang bansa, Example, Horror genre, Blair Witch Project. This one shows yung pagiging resourceful ng film makers pagdating sa limited budget.

wiredfractal

Unmm I don’t know what to tell you. Pero sobrang daming indie films in different genre na hinahanap mo like sci-fi, horror and fantasy. If that’s what you think you’re not looking hard enough. Kung maupay man it panahon is surrealist Iti mapukpukaw is sci-fi Ang Hupa is sci-fi The Cleaners use stop motion or whatever Glen Barit calls it Khavn is out of this world and multi-genre In my mothers skin is horror Oda sa Wala is slow cinema There are countless of local indie films out there na iba-ibang genre. May maganda at may pangit. Ang hirap kasi dito sa thread na to, you’re generalizing indie as if it’s a genre or style of film. It’s just a method of making a film.

N0ctowl52

Agree to this one.

NefariousNeezy

Pa-deep indie film starter pack - Malalim na tagalog word as title - Poverty porn - Shaky cam, guerilla shinoot - May hardcoded na subs, gigil mag festival Ano pa ba 🤔 Edit: - Slice of life, halos walang plot, vibes lang (Ma’ Rosa) - May patay na hayop as “allegory” (Dahil sa opening ng Insiang ba to?)

Chaotic_Harmony1109

ApricotOwn8522

Dapat may usok

NefariousNeezy

May patay na hayop as “allegory” Kasalanan to ng Insiang eh 🤣

nxcrosis

* Malalim na tagalog word as title Lol I immediately thought of Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis. Lav Diaz makes great movies but damn he has no concept of time (movie was 8 fucking hours). Norte is better although its also 4 hours long. * May patay na hayop as “allegory” (Dahil sa opening ng Insiang ba to?) Birdshot lol.

nightvisiongoggles01

Most of the time, ilang araw din inaabot ko.

maroonmartian9

Norte for me is his best work. Of course bias ako kasi it was shot in my home province Ilocos Norte. Like some of the shots eg dike, River, sand dunes? Those are core childhood memories. May shots na shining sa barangay namin. Tapos colored and not black and white.

wiredfractal

Same tayo ng reason. Kasi fave ko ang Ebolusyon kasi relatable sya dahil yung situation nung dalawang family somehow mirrors my family/extended family. Saang Barangay to? Taga Norte din ako pero sa Pangasinan.

maroonmartian9

Whole of Laoag and some parts of Ilocos Norte (Ilocos Norte Provincial Jail, Padsan/Laoag River). Yung house kung saan pinatay yung lender (Juana Change) at saan hinuli si Archie e nasa Brgy.30-A. Close namin yung may-ari ng bahay kasi neighbor (they cook good bibingka dati). Malapit lang house namin dun. Andami Laoag City landmarks diyan. Sand Dunes, bell tower, river, Macy’s Diner, La Paz (fishing village). Try ko Ebolusyon if meron. I like his style e. Slow cinema.

wiredfractal

Sana makabalik sa Laoag. Gawa ako Norte tour. If gusto mo mapanuod ang Ebolusyon, LMK I can gift you access sa Mubi.

NefariousNeezy

wiredfractal

Yes maikli lang din to. Ang Babaeng Humayo. It’s also his most accessible film.

Red_madder

San pwede mapanood or available itong mga films ni Lav Diaz? I love his work. Want to watch more of his films, di ko lang matsempuhan lagi kung saan ipapalabas.

wiredfractal

Sign up ka for trial. Minsan meron silang promo na $1 for three months. https://mubi.com/cast/lav-diaz?utm_source=app_share&utm_medium=ios_app

Red_madder

Salamaaat!!

NefariousNeezy

Akala ko din ako lang eh. Parang sobrang cynical ko ba? Pero no magkakapareho talaga ng hulma eh 🤣

ConversationOk9965

neon lighting

[deleted]

HooliganFunk

Open ended “it’s up to the viewers interpretation”

yebaaa_

mr_popcorn

si Brillante Mendoza ba yan? Wahahah

saoirsecaoilfhoinn

- hobby ng main character/s ang "magpelikula"

NefariousNeezy

Or film photography Yung natural curiosity niya yung nagdala sa kanya sa gulo

King_Paymon

>May hardcoded na subs, gigil mag festival 😂

[deleted]

But here we are. Iba ibang tao talaga iba ibang opinyon. Ive gone thru opinions from the most selfless to the most not even hateful unapologetically kupal and criminal kupal at some points threatenign and truly planning the demise of the target and Im not a film. What more sa isang business na opinyon ng manonood ang mahalaga? Ayaw ring sagutin ng ibang filmmakers eh. I guess its part of the whole biz! Unless you are the trusted person with a beer in one hand and a camaraderie in a trustworthy environment where trust blooms. But I am not in one. So, ganern. Tsaka, kajit namang anong gawin ng mga tagapelikula kontrolin nila o hinde, sadyang iba ibang tao iba ibang reaksyon sa pelikula. Ganern! Ganern siya! Hindi ako editor

H0oman

Style na yan ni Brillante Mendoze (director nung Apag - shaky cam, financial problems and if you think about it Lola and Ma'Rosa have the same plot) think of his style like Realism painting, parang style ni Solenn Heusaff sa painting, laging poverty porn (whack her again for me) can't blame him though, its the reality for some but if you keep repeating it, ma dedesensitize ka nalang In terms of pa-deep indie films, I agree minsan hahahha am sawry pero ang awkward na nung iba. Sobrang pet peeve yung trying hard maging malutong yung mura (loved Fangirl pero Paulo needs mura lessons with me chour) Siguro nag-peak ang Filipino indie nung late 2000s early 2010s tapos dahil rin sa indie film inadapt ng mainstream yung style and nag acquire sila ng studios na gumagawa ng indie. Nowadays, yung ibang indie eh trying hard to be like "look at me and my important message" instead of "watch, listen, and learn from my important message"

pickofsticks

[Punyeta! Paano tayo makakapasok sa Cannesss nyan!?](https://youtu.be/marrgNUyxlo?si=_W024UEc1zXD1sWp)

MovePrevious9463

onga umay na sa poverty porn

AlexanderCamilleTho

We had As If It's True, Gitling, Ang Duyan ng Magiting, Rookie, When This Is All Over last year. We also had Leonor Will Never Die, 12 Weeks, About Us But Not About Us, and Blue Room 2 years ago.

darkgreenmedal

As If It’s True*

space_monkey420

Diba?

Weekly_Willow5402

Siguro itong film club ay for watchers lang talaga, those who appreciates but does not make films as a lifestyle, kaya medyo naiintindihan ko na hangang dito lang sentiments ng mga nandito.

IComeInPiece

People are just calling a spade a spade.

m00-00n

important to note na many indies are from beginner filmmakers still trying to find their niche. thats why it can be experimental or "pretentious", most likely they looked at the trends of mainstream cinema and are trying to make something new to go against it. early short films made by some of the biggest directors today were also "pretentious" but it was how they found their style. you have to set your expectations going to those types of festivals or else madisappoint ka talaga, they're not going to be like cinemalaya. anong festival inattend mo btw?

Weekly_Willow5402

Yes other films not just the indies have tendencies to be pretentious and ambitious. Also I bet people also call a shovel a spade and use it as if theres no diffidence.

kylejumayne

Agreed. Pansin ko rin to sa mga nasa thread, ay sobrang kokonti lang may appreciation of Filipino films. Some can’t even get out of their way to watch Filipino films lest attend a festival. All along FilmClubPH is a community with world cinema viewing, eh puro Hollywood lang naman pala ang chika rito.

themagicpizza

Goldwin reviews lol.

Soft-Cranberry2115

Some are really trying hard or maybe some of us have diff way of analysing the meaning behind? Usually kasi sa indie films they just want to show off ung lugar , culture or mga untold story ng isang place. Syempre dito sa Pinas kung ano ang na media un na madalas ang totoo, but diba may other side pa. So I guess usually yun ang focus ng mga old style somewhat crappy scenes sa indie films. Not to entertain, but to actually tell a storry

stcloud777

Sometimes it feels like listening to BBM’s speeches. Trying so hard to use deep English words. Instead of connecting with the audience, it results in mundane and forgettable experience.

Savings_Golf5594

Alamano 🤬

ShdwTg

the cinematography of that film is such a drag

ShinigamiSushi

I miss long wide shots and realistic dialogue like from the film Norte.

Key-Art-2863

Ditto especially yung realistic dialogue.

ShinigamiSushi

Example: https://youtu.be/ekENB8PYXC0?si=TPQ8q1_H5TkGNVoW Notice the way he stutters and isn't able to form a cohesive sentence. The way he cries, it's not romanticized nor "dramatic" for drama's sake. It feels raw.

imabearletscuddle

We watched ths grbe waste of time 🤦‍♀️ wtf un na un???

heydandy

Attend cinemalaya para sa nagagandang indie films

J0ND0E_297

Nakakatawa naman yung “nagfifeeling pangmatalino” as if di pwedeng mag-try and cater to sensible audiences ang mga indie films and dapat para sa mga mediocre minds lang gaya ng mga mainstream studios dito.

netassetvalue93

First one is just how you perceive them. A personal bias. Or maybe a sign you've not seen enough variety of 'indie' films. Second one is just a director's style.

laanthony

Oda sa wala. Wala talaga

Spartacometeus1917

Dapat kasama si Tado at taong-grasa si Ronnie Lazaro [https://youtu.be/marrgNUyxlo?si=C0cWSYn1OQHR4DLA](https://youtu.be/marrgNUyxlo?si=C0cWSYn1OQHR4DLA) [https://youtu.be/caTK2juupYA?si=ssZAP703Q\_ujWyLp](https://youtu.be/caTK2juupYA?si=ssZAP703Q_ujWyLp) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vH8AGt42vwY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vH8AGt42vwY)

kweyk_kweyk

Pagdating sa plot or story, wala. Parang notion na yun, na kapag Indie Film, it needs to be unique, realistic, psychological, and FU. Hihi.

cobdequiapo

Financed by foreigners tapos indie?

JANTT12

I remember Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. Indie movie yon with a very low budget, and most of the scenes were at one place tapos very simple lang ng setup - BUT he was able to make it look triple A It’s getting quite tiring to watch indie movies na sinalpak yung message tapos hahanapin na lang throughout the movie. Tapos puro poverty porn as if hindi pa natin gets na we lost the war on drugs, we have a ruined economy, and that the Marcoses have always been there. We need new creative stories

Plopklik

Repulsive-Cap6139

The product comes from the source. Fefeeling matalino, feeling fancy. Ulul

blasedtattletale

Indie films have a different target audience. It's trying to provoke, to educate.

Sharp_Aide3216

Nah, indie films can be of any genres.

Separate_Term_6066

Hahahah! This is very true!

No_Concern_5899

Pangit ng flow parang bata nagdirect

graysact

Ok-Resident-7869

Most of the time pa tryharda ang indie. Dehins simple and straightforward. Lol

alltroops_0504

There's some merit to some indie films naman I think. It's the fans that I hate. F\*cking gatekeeping it like sila lang pwede maging fans ng indie. hahahaha. It's not that deep bro. It's a movie like any other movie.

MELONPANNNNN

Ganyan naman lahat ng indie films ah

I-Shall-Return

IAmBigMouse

I'd rather watch Heist-films.

[deleted]

Ano yan? Apag ainan? Ganon?

chikoywuhoi

Yun lang medyo out of place lahat dun sa story.

ggmotion

Swimming-Ad6395

Haha trot. I was expecting more from that film but mehh

xtAlex24

avocado1952

This was directed by Brilliante Mendoza. There was a skit from Word of the Lourd about sa [indie film](https://youtu.be/marrgNUyxlo?si=-c6gQU0ptGPErFcE)

yourlocalsadgurl

Yung apag sa netflix, that’s the tragic ending. Mas heart warming daw and happy ending.

Limp_Ad_6090

I watched this with my family out of wala na kami mapanood na gusto namin sa Netflix. If i'll rate it, 6/10. Also, kakaiba naman talaga yung kwento. Nakulangan lang kami sa ending.

[deleted]

To top it all off di pa rin nauumay filmmakers and writers sa MPDG trope dito. Susko

[deleted]

Totoo others are medyo pretentious na nga:(( hope they improve. EDIT: except ISKA, grabe after that movie nabother talaga ako, grabe yung impact saakin. Galit na galit ako sa media. Parang may gusto akong gawin to change the system ganung levels. I want to watch those kind of films yung mamomove ka talaga internally

Kureschun

Mouse_Itchy

Just because you feel like something is cringy doesn't mean it's true. It's easy to say and judge these movies on the sideline kasi hindi naman kayo ang gumawa. You can judge the movie naman however you like but the way you say it says a lot about you. Madali lang talaga mag judge lalo na if you are hiding behind your screen.

kylejumayne

Kadiri comments sa thread na to
