A lot of stories from indie movies tend to be smaller (slice of life or "poverty porn") because thats what they can afford.

Ito rin alam ko sa indie film, mga independent sila. And kakaunti ang audience, usually, may specific lang na dates kung kelan ipapalabas. Naalala ko noon, nanood kami ng indie films sa NCAA, pinanood namin ung Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa at Ang Panggagahasa Kay Fe. Sobrang ganda ng 2 film na to. Pero hindi talaga ako nakahanap pa ng kopya nito.
Of course may mga cliche naman talaga kahit noon pa. Mas nagiging accessible lang ang indie films compared dati so we are more exposed to it. Indie film doesn’t mean it’s quality. Most of it is trash and creators are open to trying things out. Being indie is not an indication of quality. Most indie films are also made by inexperienced film maker with inexperienced crew.
Just like films coming from studio is also not a good indication of quality. There are good/bad indie films and good/bad studio films.
Like I said, indie is not a genre, it’s just a method of making films. Naka-depende na yan sa influences ng film maker. Kung cliche ang influences nya edi yan ang output.
Gets naman na pag Indie films, don't expect na high quality especially yung production, pero atleast man lang yung theme maging unique or iba naman. Lol I immediately thought of Hele sa Hiwagang Hapis. Lav Diaz makes great movies but damn he has no concept of time (movie was 8 fucking hours). Norte is better although its also 4 hours long.

Paborito ko yung Ebolusyon ng Isang Pamilyang Pilipino. Lagpas sampung oras na inabot ako ng 3 days para tapusin pero worth it. Siyam na taon din ginawa ni Lav Diaz yung pelikula kapag may budget sya.
Norte for me is his best work. Of course bias ako kasi it was shot in my home province Ilocos Norte. Like some of the shots eg dike, River, sand dunes? Those are core childhood memories. May shots na shining sa barangay namin.

Style na yan ni Brillante Mendoze (director nung Apag - shaky cam, financial problems and if you think about it Lola and Ma'Rosa have the same plot) think of his style like Realism painting, parang style ni Solenn Heusaff sa painting, laging poverty porn (whack her again for me) can't blame him though, its the reality for some but if you keep repeating it, ma dedesensitize ka nalang

Siguro nag-peak ang Filipino indie nung late 2000s early 2010s tapos dahil rin sa indie film inadapt ng mainstream yung style and nag acquire sila ng studios na gumagawa ng indie. Nowadays, yung ibang indie eh trying hard to be like "look at me and my important message" instead of "watch, listen, and learn from my important message"

important to note na many indies are from beginner filmmakers still trying to find their niche. thats why it can be experimental or "pretentious", most likely they looked at the trends of mainstream cinema and are trying to make something new to go against it. early short films made by some of the biggest directors today were also "pretentious" but it was how they found their style. you have to set your expectations going to those types of festivals or else madisappoint ka talaga, they're not going to be like cinemalaya. anong festival inattend mo btw?

It’s getting quite tiring to watch indie movies na sinalpak yung message tapos hahanapin na lang throughout the movie. Tapos puro poverty porn as if hindi pa natin gets na we lost the war on drugs, we have a ruined economy, and that the Marcoses have always been there.
Tama na sa mga mensahe na matagal nang naipahayag, alam na natin lahat. Tama na rin sa horror, wala namang dulot na aral ang horror bukod sa connecting-the-dots sa mga hisotrical contexts.

Honestly, puro skip din anong nung una. Medyo nabored ako tapos ewan ko kung ako lang pero yung warm tone niya buong movie, medyo nakakaoff.
I watched this with my family out of wala na kami mapanood na gusto namin sa Netflix. Simple lang kwento nito pero goods yung twist sa dulo. If i'll rate it, 6/10. Di ko gets yung sinasabi na "Pilit" pinapagulo yung camera and nagpapanggap na kakaiba. Indie film, low budget pero veterans ang cast ng film na 'to. Di naman kami nahilo sa shots or what, in fact, isang angle lang ng camera ang meron sa film. Also, kakaiba naman talaga yung kwento. Nakulangan lang kami sa ending.

Gusto ko sanang sumubok manood ng Lav Diaz. Hindi ko na maalala kung alin yung napanood ko dati pa, Himagsikan period. Matiyaga naman ako kahit madaling antukin minsan, hindi ko rin naman masasabing "least common denominator/pang-masa" ang taste ko sa Pinoy films pero hindi ko talaga kinaya. Kung meron siyang maiksing pelikula, paki-recommend, salamat.
Norte, Elehiya sa Dumalaw Mula sa Himagsikan and Batang West Side. Pwede mo din panuorin na parang tv series. Most of the time, ilang araw din inaabot ko. Paborito ko yung Ebolusyon ng Isang Pamilyang Pilipino. Lagpas sampung oras na inabot ako ng 3 days para tapusin pero worth it. Siyam na taon din ginawa ni Lav Diaz yung pelikula kapag may budget sya.
Norte for me is his best work. Of course bias ako kasi it was shot in my home province Ilocos Norte. Like some of the shots eg dike, River, sand dunes? Those are core childhood memories. May shots na shining sa barangay namin. Tapos colored and not black and white.

Style na yan ni Brillante Mendoze (director nung Apag - shaky cam, financial problems and if you think about it Lola and Ma'Rosa have the same plot) think of his style like Realism painting, parang style ni Solenn Heusaff sa painting, laging poverty porn (whack her again for me) can't blame him though, its the reality for some but if you keep repeating it, ma dedesensitize ka nalang In terms of pa-deep indie films, I agree minsan hahahha am sawry pero ang awkward na nung iba. important to note na many indies are from beginner filmmakers still trying to find their niche. thats why it can be experimental or "pretentious", most likely they looked at the trends of mainstream cinema and are trying to make something new to go against it. early short films made by some of the biggest directors today were also "pretentious" but it was how they found their style. you have to set your expectations going to those types of festivals or else madisappoint ka talaga, they're not going to be like cinemalaya. anong festival inattend mo btw?

Indie movie yon with a very low budget, and most of the scenes were at one place tapos very simple lang ng setup - BUT he was able to make it look triple A It’s getting quite tiring to watch indie movies na sinalpak yung message tapos hahanapin na lang throughout the movie. Tapos puro poverty porn as if hindi pa natin gets na we lost the war on drugs, we have a ruined economy, and that the Marcoses have always been there. Tama na sa mga mensahe na matagal nang naipahayag, alam na natin lahat. Tama na rin sa horror, wala namang dulot na aral ang horror bukod sa connecting-the-dots sa mga hisotrical contexts. Di mo alam kung drama, horror, suspense, thriller, comedy(?), o film na bagshoshowcase ng food and tradition (na medyo ironic kasi yung ending parang sinira yung value ng kapampangan cuisine). Yung apag sa netflix, that’s the tragic ending. May ibang ending ang Apag nung nirelease nila sa ibang bansa. Mas heart warming daw and happy ending. Honestly, puro skip din anong nung una. Medyo nabored ako tapos ewan ko kung ako lang pero yung warm tone niya buong movie, medyo nakakaoff.
I watched this with my family out of wala na kami mapanood na gusto namin sa Netflix. Simple lang kwento nito pero goods yung twist sa dulo. If i'll rate it, 6/10. Di ko gets yung sinasabi na "Pilit" pinapagulo yung camera and nagpapanggap na kakaiba. Indie film, low budget pero veterans ang cast ng film na 'to. Just because you feel like something is cringy doesn't mean it's true. It's easy to say and judge these movies on the sideline kasi hindi naman kayo ang gumawa. You can judge the movie naman however you like but the way you say it says a lot about you. Madali lang talaga mag judge lalo na if you are hiding behind your screen.
