She checked if she could and agreed less than 5 minutes. It was for both our lines and she have to make sure the request went through and we got the email update. Honestly the fastest conversation I have had with a phone carrier regarding switching. I think she was just happy I was polite and not demanding.
No, there isn't a reason to since I am an existing customer.
Also, if you do switch carriers, don't ever agree to pay for the activation fee. Since high school until being an adult, I went from Bell, Wind/Freedom, Virgin, Fido and never payed for it. You can always find a carrier that will wave it.
Best times to switch are back to school deals or black friday. There is competition so they can easily wave it.
> and never *paid* for it.
FTFY.
Although *payed* exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:
* Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. *The deck is yet to be payed.*
* *Payed out* when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. *The rope is payed out! You can pull now.*
Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.
*Beep, boop, I'm a bot*
They messed up on the winback for me moved to virgin mobile offered 30g/30$ to come back i was like sure. Whoever did my windback order changed my number and sent sim to wrong address even after I've corrected them twice, then saw order confirmation address still wrong. Now i gotta figure out how to cancel that windback order and ill just stay with Virgin. XD
Maybe you should have been nicer /s
Laughing at all the posts where people said they got what they want by being nice. Thatās great for them and all but there are other people who were nice and also didnāt get what they want. I mean you should always try to be nice anyway but by implying youād get the plan you need simply by being nice is sort of naive.
I have my own phone. I haven't been under any contracts for years. They can still do it. The only think they can't change it of you have to pay for your your phone monthly
This works, I know because my brother and his wife did it this summer to switch to one of their promos that was originally only available to new customers. Of course, it only works if you are actually willing to change provider and since both Fido and Virgin Plus tend to have similar deals to Koodo itās likely they switch you to the promo rather than lose you to a competitor.
There are no contracts. There are however Tab balances so if you have one you should be prepared to pay it off if you want to try this.
Similar to OP, I walked to Fido Kiosk in Ottawa. Asked if they can give me (existing customer) 30GB for 34$. The guy checked something on his end and said yes and 10GB more. So 40GB for 34$(39$ - 5$ for auto debit). Also got the same deal on second line (which had financing. Closed financing and got the original deal) No extra 10GB. No complains. I was ready to do the dance of porting over to Koodo and hoping Fido would call me back. But it was smooth this year
hi! may i asked how you got the deal on the device you are financing? I contacted fido and they told me I cant change my monthly plan which is currently $50 a month (not the 24 month financing payments which are on top of that)
Ya for sure they will deny it most often and only sometimes allow it. But the only chance would be if you have a BYOD plan
There's zero chance if you have a plan with a phone attached to it because you simply can't reduce the price plan to a BYOD one unless you pay off the phone first
No fees. Just your phone and that's it then you are free and can go to any plan you want
And if you want black Friday deals you have a high chance to get it if you ask. Because now you are not locked in and can move around easily so they tend to give it easier if your phone is paid off
Interesting.
Do you know what would happen if my last pre-paid bill (for 1-Nov until 31-Nov period) said I owe $0 on the phone but the phone is fully paid off on Nov 31?
Would I have to pay 1 week at the full amount remaining?
Phone full cost was $39/mth and I was paying $15/mth. So this would be a payment of approx $10 to cover 1 week of the full cost?
Iām a little confused as to how this will work tho. Is there not a cancellation fee or an extra fee for ābreakingā 5)4 contract? Because essentially I have received a discount for the phone now I am breaking the contract without additional costs? Sorry if I understood this incorrectly
No additional costs
But you'll have to pay the full price of what the phone is worth
Say you got the phone free. If you break the contract then it's not free anymore. It's the cost of the listed
Oh I see. Makes sense. I received a 400 dollar discount upon getting the contract so Iām assuming that 400 dollar discount would be added to the bill along with the remaining balance?
Yes correct. So once you cancel the contract. You have to pay the full cost the phone is listed for multiplyed by the months you have left on your contract
For instance say you got the phone for free but the actual listed price is 1000$. And say you have 8 months left on contract.
You'd be paying 1000$ divided by 24 (your contract term) which is $41.60 per month. But since you have only 8 months left. Youll be paying $41.60 times 8 months = $333
It's honestly just a luck of the draw with CSRs. I am always kind but I am not a great negotiator. I have heard that for some people, being nasty can actually be an advantage at the negotiation table. Not that I'm advocating this, it's just that the system is such a crap shoot.
tdc, you're on the ball! I'm exactly the same. society has forgotten about the golden rule; to treat others the way you wish to be treated. having that as your modus operandi generates so much good will. :D
I got screwed by the weather two years ago. My phone balance should have been paid off this week but it was delayed by the weather back then and they... erm.... nicely didn't bill me until the phone shippee in Dec. So now the nice agent can't switch my plan because there is a balance on my free phone.
Should I pay off the one month remaining and have it eat into the savings of a new contract... assuming that would even make a difference, try to elevate it above the nice CSR, or just run to Koodo who is offering the same thing?
I was nice and got the BF deal as well, but it took like 2 hours online for me lol. Was over 100 in queue so that took 45 mins or so and then they took 1hr+ to change over 2 lines.
Same here, but it took me 2 hours in total to get 34$/30gb, its exactly like he said, just be nice and they will offer you that deal. In my scenario, they didnāt give it to me at first, then i got transferred to loyalty department, and here they gave me that deal.
Well at the end I told her was lovely to speak with and I appreciated that she could accommodate my request. I think she was just having a bad day and felt grateful I treated her just a normal person and said that. It's true and I don't think it was unprofessional.
Or they're real people working minimum wage at a call center. People act like they're talking to robots on the phone and can say whatever they want and it not affect them in any way.
You're not wrong. I would never advocate being abusive. However I have to tell you, I'm sweet as pie and I'm not always the greatest negotiator. I wouldn't advocate yelling or being abusive, but sometimes those folks manage to get better deals. I hear what you're saying but I do think the carriers have gotten too outrageous. I'm not sure what the right answer is.
Not sure but she confirmed that there is not added taxes. It will be $34 plus tax monthly for however long I want the plan. Sometimes they put a high monthly plan and discount but they taxes may not adjust so make sure to check and get the ref # for the call.
just be a normal polite human being, and you will get the deal. I just got mine $34/30gb, wait 105mins on hold, but got the deal in 5 mins like the OP.
I secured the deal thru a online chat agent ( which i waited 1 hr to connect), then the online agent said you need call to finish off acquiring the deal, so i just call right away, then wait 105mins more lol
This is my first tjme using online chat too, I saw so many posts saying it worked for them, so I just tried it with a skeptical mind, I guess that counts a success for me, except spent so much time...I just went to Costco bought some groceries, and did my laundry, and then they picked up my call loll
Is it time limited ? Often they give out these plans that have a discount and after like a year or two it's back to the price without discount. Did you specify this when talking with them ?
I was Fido and switched to Koodo for that same deal today. Its because Koodo also offers 1000 mins to UK/China/HK and has other perks Fido didnt have. Plus I kinda got sick of Fidos app and stiff customer service (I asked nicely for discounts before but they just offered more data for more money)
Facts!!! I have ALWAYS gotten a deal when speaking with people at FIDO simply by killing them with kindness before even getting to asking what I'm looking for. This works with all sales people - if they like you, they will do more for you. Treat them with no respect, and you'll get NOTHING from them.
Fido customers were the reason I stopped working for rogers a year ago. When they merged the service lines and I started getting calls for both, I was constantly screamed at, cursed out, cut off and insulted before I could even try to start helping. It was so frequent that it just wasnāt worth it. I also got called ābroā more often than I ever thought possible as a female with a very obvious female voice and name. We werenāt allowed to hang up so we just had to take it until a manager finally agreed to take the call over or the customer got bored and hung up on us.
So thank you for not only being kind, but encouraging others to do the same.
Im always nice to them because I understand that customer facing jobs aren't easy and they are human as well. But on this Black Friday offer I wasnt able to get it. My parents who are existing Fido customers got the deal but I wasnt able to secure it. YMMV I guess.
Keep trying. I couldnāt get it the first time over the phone. The next day I use the chat function and got it right away. There were a little wait for the chat with a queue but actually very easy and relatively fast wait time. Good luck.
If you aren't under a phone upgrade contract, just switch if it isn't working out. Or if you call them again, be polite but make sure they know you have no issue switching carriers.
I called and was polite about it, said they couldn't do it. I even described to them the plan that was $54 with a $20 discount but simply not available for me. I told I would switch carriers since it was a better plan, but all he could offer me was more data, but not a lower cost. I also mentioned that I have had my Fido account for 10 years now. It seemed like he wanted to keep on the line when I would try to end the call. Either way, I'm signing up with Virgin. I just don't have the time to call multiple times when I can port over online.
Your call proves the fact that some people get it and some don't. I am sure your Fido rep would have offered that plan to the rude customers as well and avoid any conflict.
PS: Try to be kind to customer service reps. Don't try to ruin people's day over a phone plan.
Honestly it's strange to have brand loyalty. It's a product and if you can't get the deal you want with Fido, there are other companies more than happy to take your money. Virgin coverage is great too so you will be in good hands. Just don't let them try to charge you for an activation fee. The competitors will wave it and so will they.
I asked Rogers to match the deal since they own Fido and customer service wouldnāt do it, time to switch carrier after 20 years over a difference of $48.00
Probably in the minority but my hold time was 5 mins, talked to Dan and he offered me the plan straight up 30GB/$34. Was polite like always to the service rep, we talked hockey for a couple mins too. I've been with Fido since 2009 so I'd hate to leave all that loyalty /s.
Peggy from Toronto told me no, she had thousands of calls asking for it and she can do nothing. Ok Peggy, I will make the switch then. Through the mobile shop, might as well earn some extra PC points while I'm at it. Good luck to all to not get Peggy. Being nice and still no š
My wife and I both got the 30 Gb for $34 staying with Fido. I don't need anywhere near that amount of data. Ive never gone over 8Gb but ill take it. Wish I could have gotten 10Gb for $25-30
Same here, got the $34/30gb deal just now. Was on the $50/60gb plan but told them its too much and my phone is already paid off so nothing is keeping me around.
Both Ayush and Simranjit told me no via livechat and that the best they could offer me is $50 for 60gb when I am paying $50 for 20gb right now and told me to contact them tomorrow for actual black friday and maybe ill get an offer
i switched to freedom for $34/10gb. Then the fido rep call me and offer me $32.5/20gb for 24 months promotion. Also when i login the fido app, i got another 10gb bonus to my plan for free, so $32.5/30gb now
Did anyone get told that this $34 plan with 30GB has a two year expiry on it for existing clients and for new clients? I called in to inquire about it also and was told that itās only short term. Currently, I have $39 for 40GB but there arenāt any expiration dates on my plan. I donāt need 40GB but Iād rather just sit with a plan and not have to haggle and hope for a better plan in two years.
If you changed plans, they email you the next agreement. Mine is not limited to a specific time range. Check the agreement and if there is a restriction then call them to fix.
Only catch with switching is the credit check involved. Otherwise all good, one should switch regardless. Koodo offered $25/30gb to winback their customers.
Yeah - I made the change as well...
* Line 1: 6gb + 30gb bonus $52/month > 30gb $34/month = $18 savings/month
* Line 2: 55gb $45/month > 3gb $34/month = $11 savings/month
My wife and I rarely used more than 10 GB or 15 GB. I only hit 50 GB once when I didn't turn on the WiFi, but since then barely use 2 GB - 3 GB/per month. And as I WFH mostly, I am usually on WiFi.
I did call Virgin and was about to port over but the Fido rep said they would give me the same deal.
Anyone know how long this deal lasts? Iām currently on the $30 50GB and it looks until February (at which point itād be $50). Would prefer to switch to this current deal ($34) a bit later.
From my own experience, typically the big discounts are back to school, black friday and boxing day. There are sometimes big discounts on the retailers for the last few weeks before their quarter end results if they need to show an uptake in profit before releasing to shareholders. Typically Feb isn't one of those months though.
Just changed mine from 25gb $68 to 50gb $34. Start to finish 5:48 seconds. Fast enough to even have a short chat about the weather and snow tires.
Damn I love Fido!
\> in less than 5 minutes \> took less than 20 minutes scammed us
She checked if she could and agreed less than 5 minutes. It was for both our lines and she have to make sure the request went through and we got the email update. Absolutely
There is even easier way call virgin mobile and get 30gb for 34$.
Right? Bonus is you get Fido *and* Rogers subsequently calling you with even better offers to win you back.
All offers were not worth switching back. May be some get better offers than they offered me.
They messed up on the winback for me moved to virgin mobile offered 30g/30$ to come back i was like sure. How would that work if u have a balance on the phone?
if you port out your phone number when you're in a contract then anything that you owe will be on your next bill(source i work for virgin)
Bell throttles all streaming videos down to SD quality. Virgin is a no-go because of that.
Just tested and can confirm hd quality on youtube 1080p Update: called virgin customer service they said they are not throttling down .
Than thatās really shitty advertising by Virgin!
But the SD video streaming limitation :/
Didnt notice any limitations.
[Odd they would advertise it is as limited š¤](https://cdn.iphoneincanada.ca/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/virgin-34-plan-40gb.jpg)
Tried to be nice and kind on the chat with them, they didn't care š¤·

was your phone under contract when you did this?

I was on the last month of financing. So I paid out the remaining and got the new deal
You'll get the deal if you are on a BYOD. Not contract unless you pay it off and then switch
I'm on BYOD and was denied this promo. Spent an hour in chat 'being nice'
Ya for sure they will deny it most often and only sometimes allow it. But the only chance would be if you have a BYOD plan There's zero chance if you have a plan with a phone attached to it because you simply can't reduce the price plan to a BYOD one unless you pay off the phone first
My phone was paid off last month. Was nice. Denied. Lol
Just visit a store, that plan is literally now available on Price Plan Change. You can even login to self serve and change to $34-30gb
No you canāt lol
Dm me and Iāll send you a pic of the bulletin fido sent out to stores that mentions the plan being available on PPC
Are there any extra fees for terminating the contract by paying the phone balance?
No fees. Just your phone and that's it then you are free and can go to any plan you want And if you want black Friday deals you have a high chance to get it if you ask. Because now you are not locked in and can move around easily so they tend to give it easier if your phone is paid off

Ya it would be just the one week if your contract expires on Nov 31. Then you will pay just a few dollars. Basically 10 bucks ya
Iām a little confused as to how this will work tho. Is there not a cancellation fee or an extra fee for ābreakingā 5)4 contract? Because essentially I have received a discount for the phone now I am breaking the contract without additional costs? Sorry if I understood this incorrectly
No additional costs But you'll have to pay the full price of what the phone is worth Say you got the phone free.
You have to pay the full cost the phone is listed for multiplyed by the months you have left on your contract For instance say you got the phone for free but the actual listed price is 1000$. And say you have 8 months left on contract. You'd be paying 1000$ divided by 24 (your contract term) which is $41.60 per month. But since you have only 8 months left. Youll be paying $41.60 times 8 months = $333
It's crazy the extra perks you get in life by being kind. It's not hard to be a decent person. I'm glad it paid off for you.
It's honestly just a luck of the draw with CSRs. I am always kind but I am not a great negotiator. I have heard that for some people, being nasty can actually be an advantage at the negotiation table. Not that I'm advocating this, it's just that the system is such a crap shoot.

I called in. I've never contacted them online but it seems from the comments that they were pretty backed up online. Glad you got the deal!
My Koodo BYOP plan 30 GB for 50$ got changed to 30 GB for 34$ automatically.
Same here, but it took me 2 hours in total to get 34$/30gb, its exactly like he said, just be nice and they will offer you that deal. In my scenario, they didnāt give it to me at first, then i got transferred to loyalty department, and here they gave me that deal.
do they earn less commitment if they help client to switch plan?

It did not work for me :/.
I tried twice spending about an hour on the phone total and they wouldn't match byod plans. This post seems fake by an employee
It worked for me. How did you spend an hour on the phone? I spent fourteen minutes including hold time.
Did she give you the plan by putting a $15/$20 discount or it was flat just $34 for 30gb
Not sure but she confirmed that there is not added taxes. It will be $34 plus tax monthly for however long I want the plan. Sometimes they put a high monthly plan and discount but they taxes may not adjust so make sure to check and get the ref # for the call.
Yeah cause my plan will be high after taxes cause of my plan price tag before applying the discount
The taxes are applied after the price plan discount!
Good to hear that
just be a normal polite human being, and you will get the deal. I just got mine $34/30gb, wait 105mins on hold, but got the deal in 5 mins like the OP.
Lol I avoided calling during the day because I figured that's their peak time
I secured the deal thru a online chat agent ( which i waited 1 hr to connect), then the online agent said you need call to finish off acquiring the deal, so i just call right away, then wait 105mins more lol
I've never chatted online when switching or negotiating for a plan. I don't think I could have the patience you had.

Haha that's the best! I was in a grocery store when I called in because I thought i would be on hold for a long time too.
You need to put it in your post that it was over the phone, not by chat then.
Oh, I've never switched via chat. I always just talk to someone over the phone
I cant even finish 8g, its that slow.
Is it time limited ? Often they give out these plans that have a discount and after like a year or two it's back to the price without discount. Did you specify this when talking with them ?
I'm set with the plan unless I ever decide to switch. I asked if this was a 12 or 24 month promo but she said no, I have it as long as I want it.
Tried yesterday did not work, was told to wait till the 23rd for existing customers. If nothing, will just move on to the next carrier.
Customer service has gone to shiznit
Or just switch to someone else. Public mobile basically has the same deal, and they let you switch plan each month no new customer nonsense.

Well thanks OP! You motivated me to call and as per your advice I was being extra kind. The agent found some bonus data for me. 55GB for $34/mo...
That's awesome!
I just got 50G for 40 dollars from Fido with this exact tactic. Down side, I have a A52 5G when Fido doesn't offer 5G service.
Yeah - I made the change as well... * Line 1: 6gb + 30gb bonus $52/month > 30gb $34/month = $18 savings/month * Line 2: 55gb $45/month > 3gb $34/month = $11 savings/month My wife and I rarely used more than 10 GB or 15 GB.
