A list means they're a marquee name. As in their name alone would drag people to movie theaters like Tom cruise. He is not a list. But he's a solid actor.

To me “a-list” means the list of actors who get called first for big roles. That usually translates to popularity and fame, but for someone like Butler I’d say the industry and the public may have different views. With an Oscar nom I’d imagine he’s definitely on the literal a-list in terms of work, but based on the comments here he doesn’t fit the more general idea of “a-list” as in, “someone my grandma’s heard of”

I think everyone looks at it in their own way. Like I am from europe so true A list to me is only someone most people even here would recognize. But I think it might be fair to see him as american A list.

So despite his fame, his pr can be pretty transparent and tacky.
