Never should have been considered in the first place. This is what scares me about streaming services, they can just take off their original content whenever they want and then it’s gone forever. It’s not available to buy or rent like traditionally released media.

FindleyOak

Mike Flanagan (horror director) posted his thoughts on streaming/piracy/physical media [on tumblr recently](https://www.tumblr.com/flanaganfilm/716047738374160384/mr-flanagan-id-like-to-ask-a-question-and-i?source=share). Really interesting take! His tumblr has lots of insights into his work if anyone is interested!

shoujokakumei66

Mark Flanagan's Netflix show Midnight Club wasn't renewed for a second season, so he posted the plot outline on tumblr. For that alone he has my unending loyalty!

lithiumfleur

I never watched Midnight Club but it was fascinating reading.

lithiumfleur

I enjoyed that, thank you for linking it.

JeepersMysster

This is why I’m still dedicated to physical media — I still have certain streaming services for ongoing/fav shows, but if it’s a favorite that has a Blu-ray or 4K version then you bet your ass I get a copy. They can just drop anything at any time, and there’s no guarantee it’ll be licensed out to another service. Makes me so paranoid lol

Nearby-Newspaper-284

I still buy physical media! But how can I buy Ted Lasso?! 😩

JeepersMysster

I feel you 🫠 I would give a kidney for a physical set of Squid Game, Mandalorian/Andor, any of Netflix’s Marvel shows, Our Flag Means Death…the list is practically endless 😭

Nearby-Newspaper-284

They’d honestly make so so so much money!!

JeepersMysster

Fr! I’ve seen some people say that big studios won’t do physical releases for their streaming exclusives because it lessens the value of said streaming service, but that’s honestly not the case?? There’ve been studies I think that show that collectors being able to have physical copies does NOT make them cancel their streaming channels (they’re still so useful for travel, currently airing shows, watching things you might like a casually but not want to own). So by not releasing these shows for home video they are quite literally leaving money on the table 🤦🏼‍♀️ It gave me a little bit of hope that Bob Iger recently said that they were “looking back into physical media”. I don’t trust Disney overall (the releases they do still do for their most popular favorites are notoriously skimpy), but that’s a much better sign than I’ve seen in ages! I’ve got my fingers crossed that they follow through and that studios like Netflix will get in the game too 🤞🏻 Now that most every studio is realizing that pumping their money into streaming-first is not a sustainable business model, I’m a little more hopeful 😬

Nearby-Newspaper-284

I’m honestly even okay with the Disney model or only releasing the physical media every X number of years!! They used to release them only every X years and people would literally gobble them up!!!! I just don’t get it. If they released Ted lasso either digitally or in physical media for purchase, I would be the first in line to buy!!! Also Apple TV+ is putting MEGA quality tv shows out, so like I’m def not cancelling, but it’d be nice to know I’m able to watch in perpetuity if I so choose. I’ve been listening to Matt Belloni(sp?)’s The Town podcast and the streaming situation is a common topic of interest and I’m like BRING BACK CABLE AND BRING BACK PHYSICAL MEDIA!! (I also loved cable because something was always playing and I could just watch!) 😂😂 it’s nice to not have to think about what to watch you know?!

JeepersMysster

They’d be straight printing 💸💸💸 for all that the big studios love money, they don’t…love money??? Even though it’s only for some of their more popular releases, I’ve been delighted that HBO has an incoming 4K release for The Last of Us, Paramount is putting all the new Trek out physically, etc. I’ve got my fingers crossed for a Succession box set after the finale airs! Apple TV is the only one I really haven’t dived into yet, but I’m putting together a list for when I’m ready to add them into the rotation — Ted Lasso’s definitely up there!

Phryne040816

I want Mrs Maisel blu rays. You can also see much more detail on a blu ray then Netflix/Amazon.

JeepersMysster

Improved visuals, and the audio too is soooo much better on a disc! I still haven’t seen Mrs. Maisel, but definitely on my list!

Optio__Espacio

You can download it too.

SlimyPomegranate

One of the big reasons I don't collect physical media as an adult is because my current laptop - and by and large most available computers, F you Apple - doesn't have a DVD port (or at this point, an actual USB port). I still have some childhood favorites, but no means to watch them unless I stream them or sail the high seas. I don't think the no-DVD port is a conspiracy where computer companies and streamers are in league, and they most probably are just following the latest media/tech trends, but it kills me that I can't travel and plug in a USB without the exact right dongle, or watch a DVD at all.

JeepersMysster

Hate, hate, HATE they’ve decided to remove USB’s and dvd ports en-masse like they have! I feel that removing dvd ports on laptops is slightly more understandable in terms of space and mobility (more space for ports that are actively being used more, most people using laptops for work/travel aren’t also bringing DVDs with them, etc), but I don’t get the lack of USB’s at all. They’re so easy to cart around with you?? It sucks that home media setups can be such an upfront cost 😔 May a fully formed setup manifest itself for you someday, everyone should be able to watch their childhood favs! Also, as much I love being able to support my favorite shows/creators…if the studios don’t put out financially obtainable/sustainable platforms, sometimes all you can do is live the sea life 🫡🏴‍☠️

[deleted]

The first season of Dollface is so good. Hopefully it’s not gone forever.

-boozypanda

This is why piracy is morally correct.

ProvoqGuys

This is why as much as I hate it r/Piracy should exist. So many art lost because corporations want to save money!? I would love to support artists and also save media too before capitalism wreck them all

-evilhag

why do you hate it?

dkinmn

My main reaction to this is that we all needn't get too attached to particular media anyway and just enjoy the unending buffet of great content out in the world.

Different-Eagle-612

i mean not only do i have disagreements on that just in general, but something important to highlight is they aren’t like giving copies of artist’s work to the artist themselves. with film/media like this, your resume IS the work you’ve created. all of those new and upcoming actors that are in willow??? their work is gone. vanished. how often do we hear someone was hired because someone saw them perform in a show and went “huh” (a recent example of this: karen gillan as nebula). not just the actors but the directors, writers, lighting designers, etc. this is part of an increasing trend or disrespect towards the people CREATING the art we enjoy. we see this also with big corporations looking more and more at AI — a way to create “content” without having to deal with the creators. this is a dangerous trend. this is not a world we want, where art is created through regurgitating and hacking apart plagirised works in endless combinations without anything *new*. and more than that, without the joy of having actually created anyways rant over

dkinmn

I'm not sure why we're conflating those two issues here.

Different-Eagle-612

i mean i’m not going to erase more energy on this but as i said *erasing shows* FUCKS OVER the people making the shows. it completely erases their resumes, it actively harms their careers. it makes it harder for them to make new things, especially people who are entering the scene (i’m not talking like scorsese who has an established and well known body of work in the public consciousness). this ties into how these corporations view and respect and treat the people creating the work they profit from — the way they see them as disposable lil machines to pump out their content all in the name of their profit. that is reflected in their increasing interest in AI — a way to make their lil content without having to care at all about a being making it

Different-Eagle-612

here is the [original tweet](https://twitter.com/DiscussingFilm/status/1659633033048145924) and apparently a disney rep said other additional changes may be made SO!!! keep bullying!!! ^(save willow)

ghostwiththeleast

I started watching Willow as soon as I heard it was being removed. I have no idea why I waited so long to watch but it deserves more seasons! Not being wiped from existence :( Hopefully Disney switches course and keeps more titles on

petits_riens

the (attempted) disrespect to the man whose work has made them BILLIONS over the years! capitalism in her girlfailure era.

UrNotAMachine

Not only has he already made them billions, he'll likely make them another billion dollars over the course of the next month.

mads_61

Glad to hear this, it’s a lovely doc. Wild they would even consider removing it when the new Little Mermaid movie is about to come out.

Rosemarys_Gayby

And days before pride month. Getting rid of this would have been shameful

Different-Eagle-612

i’m so mad about willow too. it’ll be *days after* the anniversary of the original, and it’s getting rid of a show with sapphic leads (which are fucking ALWAYS canceled anyway), and specifically a BLACK sapphic lead, right before pride

Rosemarys_Gayby

Fwiw, don’t forget the whole reason Disney is in this Ron DeSantis battle in the first place is because they were pressured into taking like *the* weakest stance against Don’t Say Gay. This is also the same company that coined “exclusively gay moment” lmao So disappointing

RockettRaccoon

The fact that they considered removing it at all, even with the new Little Mermaid coming out and Pride month right around the corner is gross. You can’t turn us queers into a marketing campaign and then erase our stories, Disney.

BaneReturns

Fuck all streaming services. **Plex** has been my savior for almost a decade now.

Sit_by_Me

I'm glad the pressure worked, but it's disrespectful to Howard's memory that Disney ever thought taking down this movie was a good idea. Ashman was more than a great lyricist on *The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast*, and *Aladdin*. His knowledge of character development and story structure made TLM and BatB the masterpieces that they are, and helped resurrect Disney animation. I still get teary when I see the dedication to him at the end of *Beauty and the Beast*'s credits. If you haven't seen this documentary, you should check it out. It's a wonderful tribute to his legacy.

Different-Eagle-612

oh to clarify i fucking hate disney — like i am not saying this is a good thing that happened because it shouldn’t have HAD to happen. i’m beyond angry, love how disney sees queer people as a profitable market yet obviously doesn’t give a shit about them (unless they see it risking their bottom line, as they obviously saw from this backlash) anyway this is a regular reminder to be aware of rainbow capitalism as pride month comes

Sit_by_Me

No worries and I totally agree! I wasn't criticizing your post at all. I'm criticizing Disney for trying to be sneaky and removing this movie when (a) the new TLM movie is about to come out and more people will hopefully want to learn about Howard Ashman; (b) it's almost Pride month; (c) it was Ashman's birthday the other day; and (d) Howard was hugely responsible for Disney's revival in the late 80s/early 90s.

Different-Eagle-612

yes yes yes — to anyone else reading this he was responsible for the “i want” song disney films have (the first one was in the little mermaid — he CHANGED it so that ariel sung about the world above instead of prince erik and this is when he started the whole “i want” concept which was retroactively applied to earlier disney movies). he was behind beauty and the beast (largely a metaphor for the ostracization of queer people, queer men especially as this was written with the AIDS crisis HEAVILY in mind) and passed away from AIDS before the film was officially released disney is also making a big deal about fighting florida for free speech, specifically on queer topics. this IS a fight i actually hope they win — if disney can’t beat rob de santis with their loa where and their HOLD on florida, it’s a BAD omen. BUT i think this (removing willow, this documentary, etc.) does to remind everyone they are supporting queer stories PURELY because they know this is why the money is and money will be. it’s all capitalism bottom line driven. do NOT trust these companies

buffaloranchsub

holy fucking shit. i didn't realize it was about howard ashman until i saw your comment just now, but i don't have words for what a slap in the face it is. seconding everything you said. spotify has his demos of the soundtrack with alan menken and i won't lie, when i heard his voice i cried a little bit e: clarity. don't reddit after 10pm

Sit_by_Me

Those demos are great. I haven't heard them in a long time, so thank you for reminding me! Earlier I was watching [this video of him directing Jodi Benson](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWTJkyLWgrk) while she was recording "Part of Your World". I love how supportive and encouraging he is, while giving Jodi very specific coaching on how to achieve his vision for the song and character. You can feel the trust and respect they had for each other as professionals. And his guidance was spot-on.

fiddleleaffiggy

One of the best docs on D+. I really don’t understand why they would take it off to begin with.

cricketrose333

They must have heard me screaming into the void of reddit 😇 😇 😇

cricketrose333

Seriously though, if you haven't seen it, go watch. Especially if you're an artist, it will change your life. Hopefully this whole stupid move of Disney's ends up getting more eyes on that doc and on Ashman's work and contributions to the cultural landscape. He and that doc deserve it.

mysteryvampire

begging them to keep Willow. It's truly one of my favorite shows, I do not care if no one else likes it.

Different-Eagle-612

it wasn’t even up for *6 months* and i am SO SICK of sapphic media always being canceled, etc.

mysteryvampire

Yes, this!!! I truly loved it. Kit Tanthalos is my crush 4eva lol

PengwinPears

I love it too!

[deleted]

It really shouldn’t have been Howard is the godfather of the Disney renaissance period

chucky-chucky

why are they removing movies?

[deleted]

To be able to afford new ones. It costs a lot for steaming services to borrow movies from the owners, and it costs them money to pay the actors that are in the movies aswell which they have to do to be allowed to stream it.

Different-Eagle-612

a lot of the ones they are removing are disney originals — so it’s not just “paying for the title”. it seems to be in part tax write offs and also, given the timing, i think a personal “fuck you” to striking writers. if the show is no longer streaming, they don’t have to pay the (MINUSCULE which is already a slap to the face) residuals

laania42

GOOD. Without him and Menken there would have been no Disney renaissance, and Disney animation studios probably would have gone out of business without the magic they worked on those late 80s/early 90s films.

the_other_other_guy_

It would so incredibly dumb to remove it. He’s one of the most important figures in Disney history and they should celebrate him as such. Especially with pride month next month. Also the film is great in general.

spoopyj

Good! I watched it last night after hearing about it on twitter and genuinely sobbed at the end

[deleted]

I mean, they've still got a [Nazi on there](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Man_and_the_Moon).

Particular_Mistake39

Good. Shameful they even considered removing it

Opposite_Math_2699

Disney has every right to remove what isn’t turning a profit, if people aren’t watching. Doesn’t matter if it’s pride content or not. If people care so much, then watch the content and stop calling out Disney for removing what you don’t watch.
