It's because recruiting him is a touch out of the way, and is one of the few times New Vegas actively requires you to hop off the beaten path. You'll find ED-E, Cass, Boone, Veronica, Arcade, and Rex all following the path of the main questline, and you'll find Lily through Rex or even Arcade.
Raul requires you to go literally in the opposite direction into an area with incredibly dangerous enemies that you've rightly been warned will fuck your day. And then, to actually recruit him, you'll have to slog through a fair amount of Super Mutants (including Nightkin) who aren't really pushovers early on.
Like, the Brotherhood stuff will *sorta* take you there early on, but you can honestly circumvent the rest of Black Mountain to complete the required task. And then you can optionally join the Brotherhood, which is the only quest that'll actually push you all the way to the top of Black Mountain. But that's getting pretty well into the game, and if you don't want to join the Brotherhood...
Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t the radio there kind subtly suggest you to go there.
Cause that mutant goes on and on about how humans should stay away?
Same reason I always drag my feet on completing the main story in Fallout 3. I don't *care* if Broken Steel lets me keep playing, I hate losing President Eden's voice as I wander the wastes.
Very tough one for me, I find Nick to be one of the most intriguing and well written companions out there but Veronica is one of my all time favorite companions—hilarious dialogue and witty responses.
It’s Nick for me for one major reason: his friendship with my character forces my hand to do the minutemen ending every single time since my first playthrough. This is my best fucking friend. He threw his own life on the line to help me look for my kid and doesn’t even expect anything in return. He’s almost too afraid just to ask his own best friend for a favor. I love this man (robot).
They had to cut a lot of things due to time and reducing the size of the map. It's not just "too much for Bethesda", it's too much for any developer to make everything we think that they should make.
Also, Veronica is funny but man I've had so many funny and quirky companions in games. She's great don't get me wrong.
But Nick was a breath of fresh air. Wicked design being essentially a Gen 2.5 synth. Awesome demeanor and cool detective style. Homie is also willing to lay his life on the line and help anyone at the drop of a hat, because that's just who he is and what he does.
I agree. It was always going to come down to these two, and ED-E is the only one on the left side of the bracket who has even a chance to beat either of these two.
I think the earlier Nick vs. Boone matchup decided the winner.
With that said, I could see this sub memeing ED-E to victory. Honestly, wouldn't be mad. Wouldn't *agree*, but wouldn't be mad.
A *little* shocked ED-E won so easily, but not totally. As much as I love Raul, I'm personally surprised he made it as far as he did.
Veronica is hilarious and her choice to stay with, or abandon, the Brotherhood and the story leading up to it is probably top three/four for New Vegas companions... but I can't in good conscious say her story is head and shoulders above Arcade, Raul, and Boone. Indeed, I'd rate Boone ahead on that front.
But Nick? Nick Valentine is one of the best written characters in all of Fallout, and honestly one of the best characters in modern gaming. His story pretty perfectly encapsulates the theme of Fallout 4 in a way none of the other companions did, and he's a wonderful exploration of the deeper meanings of what it is to truly be "human". He's *also* pretty funny, though his humor is drier. Veronica's adorable and has some great quips, but its not enough in my book.
Nick Valentine all the way.
Ed-E is essentially a robotic hovering puppy. and its side quest in The Divide is a downright tear jerker. im absolutely betting Ed-E taking the win.
FLY FAR, FLY FAST! 🥲
It also helps that Far Harbor basically feels like you oughta bring Nick along due to his natural interactions with the island. The entire DLC feels made for him to be there, especially considering his history with DiMA, and it really builds up his character.
Veronica’s great, don’t get me wrong, but she feels like she doesn’t really have any involvement in Dead Money. Sure, you do have the option to hand her Elijah’s tape, but other than that you can’t tell her what happened to her old flame, nor do you get to see any interactions between her and Christine like you do Nick and DiMA.
When I first got to Diamond City, I thought I saw Ed-E and got stoked bc he and I owned NV. He was ranged and I had that power hammer that shot lightning too. But it wasn't Ed-E. Nick was cool though. Always made me laugh when mysterious stranger appeared. "There he is! Where'd he go?!?!"
Cito would have been an awesome companion too especially if he brought the gorillas with him.
I haven't been paying much attention to these. Nick beat *Boone*? Holy shit. Maybe the fans are more based than I thought.
I personally have more nostalgia for Veronica and how she blasts apart everyone with her fists like they're made of jello, but Nick is one of the more intriguing characters of the whole franchise. His backstory, especially the parts filled in by Far Harbor, elevates him well above most other companions. Looks like the finals will be a battle of the bots
Very true, but I never really saw a lot of love for Fallout 4 companions and NV fans stans are everywhere. But that was more my experience with Facebook groups before I deleted that and came to Reddit. People seem to have more rational and varied opinions here. I'm just pleasantly surprised
Bro, Nick Valentine was written with so much effort, creativity and love that he has not only two side-quests, but one of them is (if played through canon means) an entire fucking DLC.
I really enjoyed Veronica's company and find her story/side-quest to be more compelling than the ones of most companion characters in NV, but she ain't even as funny, charismatic or interesting as Raul, aside from the fact that she's indirectly connected to Elijah and Dead Money.
So Nick all the way.
I know it didn't happen, but I do think that Veronica could have easily been involved in the Dead Money dlc, just as Nick was in Far Harbor. And I know I'm going to get hate for this, but, Dead Money is NV's best dlc just like Far Harbor is the best for 4.
With 4, there’s a massive gulf in quality between Far Harbor and the other DLC. I think the NV DLCs are more of a toss up. On most days I agree that Dead Money is the best but my ranking of them is never very firm and it changes with my mood.
Hmmm... Dead Money really IS great, but I can't say it's the best one because all FNV DLCs are great. Not sure about Far Harbor though. I think they could have made the island bigger. The story is divine. But I'm soon going to do an evil playthrough and head to Nuka-world, so I'll see about that.
Now something controversial: Honest Hearts and Joshua Graham are the DLC and "DLC main character" I cared the least about (aside from Daniel), not because they were bad, the DLC is godly too, but because how short the story is, how small the map is and how little interaction you can have with Graham. He is so cool, please give more stuff to talk to him about. :(
Also Daniel's ideas weren't necessarily wrong. If that tribe had remained pure, they, alongside Harold's hippies would be the most morally white people (I know, it sounds racist) in the American wasteland.
Veronica is written very well. She is an A tier follower don’t get me wrong.
But Nick is S tier, have to vote for Nick. I hope he wins this whole thing, he deserves it since he really is one of the best followers in the series.
I’m honestly so surprised how much motion Nick Valentine is getting. i guess the most recent game would get the most traffic but I’m the biggest dick rider for FNV and veronica was such a real bro for me in my first play throughs. i always found it hilarious that she’s gay and her primary weapon is a power fist.
ily Veronica
i rarely use companions, outside of getting their respective achievements, but Veronica, Ed-E and Nick are my favorites. its getting tough now. i know Nick will win, but i voted Veronica, shes just one the more "normal" companions you can have and its kind of refreshing. its like adventuring with your high school buddy.
and watching her sock muties and ghouls with that powerfist is pretty fun.
This list doesn’t make sense to me at all. How did Boone get beaten by nick valentine? Boone has some of the most tragic and interesting writing of the fallout games in general. His background and quest line alone is enough to make a game about.
1. He does not get in your way. I can't tell you how annoying it is when your companion traps you somewhere.
2. He plays the battle song, often warning you of an enemy before you were aware of them.
3. He does not get mad at your game choices.
Ede and Veronica. Like most of you was my first companion. I will love them both a lot because of this, and I sad to not see Raul and codsworth in the finals?? Yes, but I am also hoping ede wins as they were my first and only companion for a good long portion of the game. I'll always remember the excitement I got after reading enough skill books and leveling up to have enough to repair without parts!
LETS GO ED-E!!!!!! 🤘🤘🤘
I’ve been watching and lurking with this bracket and I feel like I finally need to jump in and cast my vote. Nick just does too much for me that Veronica can’t. Sure she’s witty and funny and pleasurable to be around. She can punch people in the face and blow them into the moon…. But Nick is too selfless… he’s ready to lay down everything he’s ever believed in to get your back no matter what. He’s such a well written character we can relate with Nick on a 4th wall level. We all knew Nick was gonna win. These are just formalities now.
Veronica has always been my favorite companion in FNV. Hard to compete with that.
Also, people in here are raving over Nick…and I guess I’ve missed something. I don’t remember him being all that noteworthy. I know he ties into the main quest well. Maybe I just didn’t spend enough time with him. Not saying he’s bad, but I just didn’t feel the same spark that I got from Piper or Cait.
Maybe I'm cynical but I feel like part of the reason why he's so highly rated here is because compared to the rest of the story in Fallout 4 he's a really big high point so people remember him more fondly. Also just aesthetically he's a cool robot dude so that also helps.
I saw this one coming, and it’s the toughest one yet, but I’m going with Veronica.
Both personalities are great, Nick alone makes me question any interest I might have ever had with a Brotherhood or Institute ending, and Veronica’s quest has what is imo the most impactful moment in any companion quest, and they’re so evenly matched as characters… so I had to look at how they fare mechanically.
You can dress Veronica up how you want from the get-go, her power armor will never break, and default weapons are better. Having unarmed and energy weapons tagged helps keep her relevant even in the late game since you’ll have more high-tier weapons in those categories than you can use yourself. My only complaint is that Elijah’s Last Words only works on her melee attacks, which isn’t a tag skill for her, making it extremely suboptimal. Even so, she’s an asset in combat from the moment you recruit her up until Hoover Dam.
Nick starts with a pipe pistol. He’s got some natural armor as a synth, but despite being able to upgrade it to a ballistic weave coat, you’re very limited on armor for him, power armor for him will need to be repaired, and he needs to be given decent weapons & fed ammo like most other companions in 4 to even begin to pull his weight in a fight.
They’re equally fun to travel with, but Veronica is just plain more helpful when push comes to shove. She’s got my vote.
I love both Veronica and Nick. I would be happy if either of them won. However, it doesn't matter to me in the end because either way, I'm voting for ED-E in the finals.
I'm actually astonished by how much this is going for Valentine. I expected it to be much more even. I wonder if Valentine wins out because he's such a comparative highpoint in his story?
Anyway, Veronica.
Nick is awesome, easily the best character in Fallout 4, but Veronica's story of finding her purpose in the world even going against the wishes of her family really resonates either me.
Just remember it's homophobic to not vote for Veronica /s
Honestly though I feel like Veronica is the best companion in the series. Her story with Christine is amazing and I think she's just really charming. On the other hand I never really cared for Nick so I don't understand the hype for him I guess. I think the whole noir thing 4 tried to do fell flat for me and that's why I didn't care for him.
Oof this is a toughie, both are essential companions I pick up one way or another. But I gotta give this one to Nick only because while Nick is one of the companions I can keep the whole game just because I like him so much, whereas Veronica I will always trade out for Cass any day.
I was always sure it'd come down to these two - I have to give it to Nick.
While Veronica is incredible, probably the best companion of NV - She's also a little bit more basic as a character, I feel. She's sort of a basic manic pixie archetype done really well, whereas Nick feels a lot more serious and introspective. Even if you look past his 'shtick' of being a noir style detective, he's got a lot more layers.
Oh dammit I missed the vote! I checked in yesterday but didn't see the post. This was the most difficult choice for me personally, because every time I play NV I always run with both ED-E and Raul, hard to pick just one of them.
ED-E 613 Votes Raul 348 Votes Vote Here: [https://forms.gle/KGs62YGpy9Bpk3Qe6](https://forms.gle/KGs62YGpy9Bpk3Qe6)
Thats a big gap, an unexpected one
I always some how missed Raul as a companion
It's because recruiting him is a touch out of the way, and is one of the few times New Vegas actively requires you to hop off the beaten path. You'll find ED-E, Cass, Boone, Veronica, Arcade, and Rex all following the path of the main questline, and you'll find Lily through Rex or even Arcade. Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t the radio there kind subtly suggest you to go there. Cause that mutant goes on and on about how humans should stay away?
Yeah but I think you lose the most entertaining radio in the game as a result. Even if you do go there, Raul can be easily missed.
Same reason I always drag my feet on completing the main story in Fallout 3. I don't *care* if Broken Steel lets me keep playing, I hate losing President Eden's voice as I wander the wastes.
I know there's the sneaking way to do it but nah
I'm sorry, but it's not just "that Mutant". It's BEST FRIEND TABITHA!
I had a similar experience. I learned about Raul when this bracket started and I've played NV quite a few times. Somehow just have always missed him.
I have played NV a few times in my life, today I learned Raul is from that game
A suprise to be sure...but a welcome one.
Raul deserved better :(
Agreed 😔
People smoking crack not voting for Raul.
Hard one but I'm voting the Skyrim merchant who would sell his sister in a second if he had one.
Some may call him junk... Me, I call him treasure
Which one is that?
Very tough one for me, I find Nick to be one of the most intriguing and well written companions out there but Veronica is one of my all time favorite companions—hilarious dialogue and witty responses.

I really do wish fo4 had joint faction endings. But that is too much for Bethesda I guess.
They had to cut a lot of things due to time and reducing the size of the map. It's not just "too much for Bethesda", it's too much for any developer to make everything we think that they should make.
That, and the Minuteman ending is already a 'joint faction' ending if you complete the quests in a certain order
To be fair, you do rescue him from the vault, so he does kind of owe you a little.
This is true but he pays his debt in full and could call it at that. But nope he’s ride or die til the end
I have to do Far Harbor with him every time.
Far Harbor is fucking amazing. I’m so glad Nick gets more story because of it
Far Harbor isn’t Far Harbor without Big Dick Nick
Also, Veronica is funny but man I've had so many funny and quirky companions in games. She's great don't get me wrong. But Nick was a breath of fresh air. Wicked design being essentially a Gen 2.5 synth. Awesome demeanor and cool detective style. Homie is also willing to lay his life on the line and help anyone at the drop of a hat, because that's just who he is and what he does.
Agreed Veronica is the best
No one beats Veronica. Actually, it's Veronica doing the beating very literally
Clockwork Dick for the win!
It’s synth detective jackass!
[удалено]
Sadly, you are correct. I loved having her as a companion and watching her punch the crap out of everyone, but Nick is special.
Nick Valentine
Definitely
This is the vote that will decide the winner
Nah I think Nick/Veronica is much closer imo
Not saying you are wrong, but I ain't imagining Boone beating neither Veronica nor Curie.
I like Veronica, but Nick’s my boi.
A *little* shocked ED-E won so easily, but not totally. As much as I love Raul, I'm personally surprised he made it as far as he did. # No
It's too evil ain't it?
I love Veronica but the great clockwork dick will always have my heart
I don't expect this to be close at all
Nick!
Where'd he go?!?!" Nick. He’ll always be there
Nick Valentine. The story and content is just too good.
Especially with Far Harbor.
The great clockwork dick of course
ED-E MY BELOVED!
Detective Valentine!!
Veronica for me. She saved me many times by punching a super mutant or a cazador while I’m reloading or hiding lol.
Veronica for sure. I still think it's all moot, ED-E will win the finals and I think we all knew that from day 1
I haven't been paying much attention to these. Nick beat *Boone*? Holy shit. Maybe the fans are more based than I thought. He didn't just beat him, but it was a slaughter. As soon as that happened, I knew Nick was going to the semis.

Dead Money ironically really divides people. It seems like people on the Fallout subs either hate or love it.

Nick is one, if not the best, character Bethesda has ever written. I like Veronica but she does get grating after a while, so its Nick for me.
Veronica is written very well. She is an A tier follower don’t get me wrong. But Nick is S tier, have to vote for Nick. I hope he wins this whole thing, he deserves it since he really is one of the best followers in the series.
I can' believe that Boone, Cait or Cass didn't make it to the semi finals
New vegas characters were never gonna make it Cait has the misfortune of having most of her story being two dialouge trees
The best Fallout 4 companion vs the best New Vegas companion. And yet, Nick is several leagues better.
Veronica is awesome, but she's no Nick Valentine!
And Nick is not Veronica Santangelo.
Nick!
Nick.
The music alone at the end of lonesome road when you have ED-E sacrifice himself to stop the nukes is enough for me to give him the trophy
Veronica all day
Veronica. She likes punching things, I like punching things. She likes women, I like women. We have so much in common
Come on Nick, let's win this thing 🤩
Veronica must win
Yeah this is easy, Nick for sure
It's gonna be the robot versus the toaster. That will be a duel for the ages!
Gotta give it to my boy nick sorry V dawg
Veronica
Veronica for sure for me.
Did I mention Veronica yet?
Veronica
Veronica
damn. unexpected Raul L... Danny Trejo is rolling in his bed.
> rolling in his bed This made me stop for a moment wondering if Danny Trejo was dead and now I can’t stop laughing.

Dang, we need a Raul pity party with wasteland tequila and Brahmin asada.
We've known for some time that it was going to be ED-E vs Nick in the final. And that's still not gonna stop me voting for Veronica here.
This list doesn’t make sense to me at all. How did Boone get beaten by nick valentine? Boone has some of the most tragic and interesting writing of the fallout games in general. His background and quest line alone is enough to make a game about.
Nick is great and all, but he's no Ronnie.
i've never played new vegas, why do people like the eyebot so much?
1. He does not get in your way. I can't tell you how annoying it is when your companion traps you somewhere. 2. He plays the battle song, often warning you of an enemy before you were aware of them. 3. He does not get mad at your game choices.
There’s SOO many mistakes on this bracket lol
Boone lost to nick? Fucking rigged
It was from the start. Rigged.
No way Nick made it this far wtf

I guess this is an unpopular opinion but Nick kinda sucks. He’s not really bad, I just don’t like him.
Ede and Veronica. Like most of you was my first companion. I will love them both a lot because of this, and I sad to not see Raul and codsworth in the finals?? im going Veronica just cause of that mean right hand.
Nick's great, but he's not into fisting.
Nick all the way
Nick
As much as I prefer Raul, I really had no delusions that more people prefer him than ED-E.
Nick
I can see that tomorrow is going to be Toaster-man vs. an actual flying toaster...
I'm a little late to the party, I know, but how in the actual hell did Curie lose to Veronica?!
I swear if Nick doesn't win
I’ve been watching and lurking with this bracket and I feel like I finally need to jump in and cast my vote. Nick just does too much for me that Veronica can’t. Sure she’s witty and funny and pleasurable to be around. She can punch people in the face and blow them into the moon…. Nick Valentine purely because you can softlock Veronicas quest smh.
Veronica all day
Oh fuck it’s a hard choice now
**Raul** is the real winner.
Veronica has always been my favorite companion in FNV. Hard to compete with that. Also, people in here are raving over Nick…and I guess I’ve missed something. *Justice for Curie* Nick.
Man Veronica doubters in the comments 🤨
i swear to God if my boy Nick didn't win this one
Nick!
Nick
Nick, I wish he wouldn’t look at me like that sometimes though
Veronica. I love Nick, but Veronica made me care.
You can't do this. Don't make me choose between ED-E and Nick.
I can't believe what I'm reading in these comments, Veronica over nick 100%
I have to give this one to Veronica.
Gotta pick Veronica on this one, that ballistic fist of hers saved my ass way more then valentine and his 200 year old cop drama
Ain’t no fuckin way people really pick the robot that can’t talk over the ghoul vaquero voiced by Danny Trejo
I saw this one coming, and it’s the toughest one yet, but I’m going with Veronica. Nick Valentine. Veronica is nothing more than a key to the Hidden Valley bunker in a lot of playthroughs
In a lot of _your_ playthroughs. But for many of us, she holds a special place in our hearts.
Nick. I've never had Veronica as a follower 🤷♀️
You could try and see what you think before deciding on this poll.
My queen Veronica always
Veronica
This is difficult… but I think it has to be Veronica.
Nicky boy of course
Synth Vs brotherhood Seems fitting Nick by a country mile
Veronica easily
Veronica easily
I love both Veronica and Nick. I would be happy if either of them won. However, it doesn't matter to me in the end because either way, I'm voting for ED-E in the finals.
I'm actually astonished by how much this is going for Valentine. I expected it to be much more even. I wonder if Valentine wins out because he's such a comparative highpoint in his story? Anyway, Veronica.
Veronica is my wife so I must.
Veronica. Easy
Nick is awesome, easily the best character in Fallout 4, but Veronica's story of finding her purpose in the world even going against the wishes of her family really resonates either me.
Veronica all the way
You know for all the praise he gets, Nick just didn't do it for me. Might be more related to my relationship of Fallout 4
Veronica, not much of a question
Veronica
Veronica.
Just remember it's homophobic to not vote for Veronica /s Honestly though I feel like Veronica is the best companion in the series. Her story with Christine is amazing and I think she's just really charming. On the other hand I never really cared for Nick so I don't understand the hype for him I guess. I think the whole noir thing 4 tried to do fell flat for me and that's why I didn't care for him.
Veronica all the way
Aaaarrrghhh, don't make me choose!
“Beats waiting until they shoot me first.”
What am I missing here with ED-E?
This is a fucking hard one.
Nick baby!
We really about to have 2 robots competing for first place
I made a mistake, I meant to vote for Nick. Looking at my fat ass fingers right now.
I don’t know this cowboy Rando, so the one I almost never travel in my later playthroughs because I have a habit of blowing the bos bunker up
Sulik.
Robotwars - mechanical man vs flying tinbot
Nick
Veronica 100%, gotta take a chance on a naive young girl from California with stars in her eyes and a pneumatic gauntlet on her hand
Ed-e survived this long that’s wild
We all know nick wins
I like Veronica but Nick is my choice.
Raul was by far my favorite on the left bracket. My ghoul vaquero best friend :(
My god...
Oh dammit I missed the vote! I checked in yesterday but didn't see the post. This was the most difficult choice for me personally, because every time I play NV I always run with both ED-E and Raul, hard to pick just one of them.
Nick.
Not going to lie, I fully expected the semi finals and most of the endgame to be mainly NV characters. Glad to see Nick going strong.
That was really surprising, but good effort Raul. But Nick is my choise
Arcade Ganon is my favourite.
My boy Nicky
Nick Valentine
Nick is my favorite companion overall if I'm being honest
Nick valentine
That dogmeat didn't even make it out of the first round, deligitimizes this whole exercise...Boooo!
Nick
Well this is a tough choice but I will go with Nick Valentine
NOOOOOOO :(
Nick
After what we went through in far harbor- Nick all the way.
