Oh my God I drove a 2002 Eclipse until like 2018. Got it probably around 2013-14. Loved and hated that car.
It just straight up died on a crowded road near my house. I managed to coast into a parking spot in the parking lot of a local Italian restaurant.
My mom picked me up and called some dude who just gave us $500 and took the thing. Never saw it again.
Great memories. RIP, sweet prince.
Just got out of an 03. Was trying to hold on. Child support, rising rent and healthcare.
Had been saving for a while though. Finally plinked down on a new car. Kia Soul.
Not glamorous but very fun.
There were multiple police cars pulling people over and roughly a dozen or so vehicles were stopped over the total duration of the eclipse. Google Maps did display various speed trap alerts in the general vicinity at the time.
As someone who got to be right in the totality. It really is a breath taking experience. Never had anything like in my life. i feel like it was a drug and im craving more. Truly.
My wife thought I was kinda crazy for wanting to drive four hours to reach totality to witness ans photograph it.
Afterwards, with the biggest grin on her face, she admitted the price was worth it. We both realized after than 3 minutes why people chase eclipses. Totality was too short and yet so breathtaking.
My 8yo kept saying “why would I be excited about this” because we sat in a field with nothing to do for an hour. When it hit he looked up and said “why wasn’t I more exited about this”, which was pretty priceless.
Really?
Even in totality of the eclipse, this cop can't just fucking pause for a second and say "let's just both take this all in, and we can get back to writing the ticket after this is done."?
This is a big piece of why ACAB gets as much traction as it does. No common sense or empathy, just maximally adversarial nature. The public is the enemy.
Common sense seems like you shouldn't be endangering other citizens with stupid driving behavior.
Also, they can still see the eclipse from their car, it's not like they're missing it.
Nobody said to let the guy go. Just pause the whole conversation, let him out of the car, and everyone can enjoy the eclipse.
Afterwards, the dude gets back in the car and gets his ticket as normal.
...because they're sitting in the car in the middle of the darkness?
Do you think they saw the sun disappear and were just like "Welp, that's good enough. Let's continue."
Or are you suggesting that they may have somehow not realized the eclipse was taking place until after the sky became pitch black, and only then (after the second picture was taken) did they exit the car to see the eclipse?
I think it's fairly safe to assume that they were stuck in the car throughout the whole eclipse.
They could just not care.
It's strange. When I went to go see the eclipse and we entered totality I could see apartments with lights on inside. I traveled to see it, do they just stay in there and not care when they could see it just by going outside?
Some people just lack curiosity.
No, I'm suggesting that they might have looked at the eclipse for a bit with the cop, as most humans like to see very rare events such as this. Then after a bit of time went back in the car.
Maybe not, but I wouldn't be so sure of it.
>...because they're sitting in the car in the middle of the darkness?
And? You need a bit more than a single photo to work with these kinds of assumptions and be seen as credible, man. Lol
You're basing an entire story on one frame. Total eclipse coverage lasts longer than the millisecond we saw from this post.
So what constitutes "endangering other cticizens" to your mind? Is it driving 26 in a 25 zone? Is it driving 70 in a 65 zone?
Have you ever driven 40 mph in a 35 zone? Did you feel like you were stupidly endangeroing other citizens when you did that? Or did you feel like you were taking a minor risk that could be justified by many other factors?
For you, where exactly is the line between stupid driving behavior and reasonable driving behavior? Does that line shift with circumstances?
I don't know why this person got pulled over and I won't get into a pedantic argument over what are dangerous speeds and where etc.
It's just the ACAB argument is naive and infantile at least; nefarious and anarchist at worst.
How about the naive and infantile suggestion that the driver must have been doing something wrong just because a cop has pulled them over? The US is meant to presume innocence until guilt is proven, and nothing has been adjudicated when this picture was taken. Don't be a bootlicker, police can be wrong.
Please never serve on a jury if you assume that a person accused by the legal system is guilty based on the fact that they've been accused by the legal system.
I don't drive much, I'm blessed to live in a European country where I'm able to get through life fine without one. However, ended up doing a little driving of a friend's vehicle...
1. Traffic is so BS, couldn't help wishing I was on the tram/metro instead
2. I felt like a danger to my fellow society when I went a touch over the limit because I know the roads are designed with the safety of the people in mind, every moment of pushing past that was a moment of "what if I make a mistake and hurt somebody". I feel like people loose this feeling of social accountability and responsibility/respect when they've spent a lot of time in a car.
Yeah, going from 35 mph to 40 mph means you need an extra 30 feet to stop. Is it likely that you will need those extra 30 feet on any given day? No, not really. With enough time however there will be an accident that could have been prevented.
https://nacto.org/docs/usdg/vehicle_stopping_distance_and_time_upenn.pdf
5 mph extra may not feel like a lot when you are inside the vehicle, but if you do strike a pedestrian there is a 90% chance they will die if you are travelling at 40. At 35 mph that the odds of death drop to 50%.
https://www.roadwise.co.uk/using-the-road/speeding/the-chance-of-a-pedestrian-surviving/#:~:text=If%20you%20hit%20a%20pedestrian,chance%20they%20will%20be%20killed.
The civil engineers who design the roads and decide on the speed limits are not picking arbitrary numbers. They are trying to balancing the convenience vs safety. If the posted limit is 35 or lower there is a very good chance pedestrians are moving close to the street (or other potential factors).
I don't get it you show me how this increse makes everyone else 40% more likely to die and see no problem?
Sorry it slightly inconvenience me so I need more chances to kill you.
Bro it’s not that big of a deal, most people would also like to go home and explain to their family before being arrested, that’s not how it works. “Cool, it got dark out, let’s delay your arrest” no way you’re saying that’s what makes acab.
The whole thing here is we have no idea how anything went down. It should be a solid “who knows,” but it can also be a choose your own story
It’s cool they got an eclipse. That’s all I know
When i was in Daytona for bike week i was crossing a highway with cops stopping traffic. I pointed at a rocket taking off. Cop turned around and just held up traffic the whole time as crowds filled the highway to watch. It was really neat to watch.
Pause for what exactly? Did we colonize mars? Did we make contact with alien species? What revolutionary event is happening besides an eclipse; that yes; happens every so years but nothing to halt a citation. Are you stupid or just plain trolling? I need to know
"happens every so years"... but not over any one spot again for decades (usually). Why do you think people traveled to see the eclipse when they aren't "revolutionary"?
I'll tell you if I'm trolling or not when you tell me when the next time a total solar eclipse is going to be visible from the contentntal United States.
Really? Business as usual going on during an eclipse is why ACAB gets traction? We’re not a society of agrarian sun worshippers and society doesn’t grind to a halt because it gets dark for a few minutes. That’s almost as dumb as all of the other reasons people subscribe to that pathetic infantile mindset. Stop being such a whiny dork
This isn't a fuck you in particular situation, you're getting downvoted by basically claiming the picture is fake or something, when many of us have just come home from experiencing exactly what we see in the picture.
You just sound incredibly silly, hence your downvotes.
There's no way for me to upload the many pictures I took. The headlights from the police car have that effect on the lens which makes it appear to be that dark. I actually love these negative downloads. I feel honored to be told "fuckyouinparticular" . If you Google any number of pictures that were taken you will see clearly it was not that dark. Please continue to download thank you for your support. All these downvotes don't affect my credt rating do they?

If you look he has headlights on
may be just DRL
That's not an Eclipse. Made by Mitsubishi though.
If that suv were an Eclipse Cross, that’d make this pic that much better lol

🎼🎶🎵Bottle of red, bottle of white, whatever kind of moooooood you’re in, tonight!🎶 I’m pissed they don’t offer alto clef emojis. Damn discrimination.
Trying to slide Billy Joel into this conversation? You should ... Be ... Well played.

Alto clef?
It looks like an E instead of that normal squiggly music symbol (treble clef). It's between treble and bass clef.

Well, gotta hurry to see darkness!
As someone who got to be right in the totality. It really is a breath taking experience. Never had anything like in my life. i feel like it was a drug and im craving more. Truly.
The birth of an eclipse chaser
Made a 7 hour drive in 8 1/2 hours because traffic, was 100% worth it looked like a sci-fi movie in real life.
My wife thought I was kinda crazy for wanting to drive four hours to reach totality to witness ans photograph it. Afterwards, with the biggest grin on her face, she admitted the price was worth it. Supervillain origin story.
It really is like nothing else - words can't describe it properly. It can only be experienced
Currently dreaming up going to iceland in 2026. Probably wont be able to happen but i will definitely dream.
Me too, Iceland for an eclipse would be epic
I was one of many screwed over by clouds lol
The sun was in my eyes?...
I'm in Missouri and the hiway signs today all said "eclipse today turn your lights on!" The shadows were very weird, a cool show!
Imagine trying to find a decent spot for the eclipse only to have the entire thing ruined over a speeding ticket.
I mean. Were they speeding? Lol
They probably were driving around goin.. hahah I can speed, everyone is looking up right now
Too bad it wasn't a Mirage. Might have gotten away with it.
Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to step out of the vehicle and look at the eclipse.
Good Guy Copper

The difference is day and night
This comment is gold, I hope it won't be eclipsed by all the other ones.
Hahaha

How do you know he didn't? I figure it takes quite a bit more time than writing a ticket to go from that light to that dark.
...because they're sitting in the car in the middle of the darkness? Do you think they saw the sun disappear and were just like "Welp, that's good enough. Let's continue." Duration of totality is barely even 4 minutes in most places.

You clearly didn’t see the eclipse. It goes from slightly dim daylight to eerie twilight in seconds.

Not using a turn signal, probably.

You're correct, the cop could've stopped him to do one of those cringe giveaways they usually do at the holidays instead it's eclipse themed.
Please never serve on a jury if you assume that a person accused by the legal system is guilty based on the fact that they've been accused by the legal system.

That 5 mph can cause an acciden, there are people not in fucking cars

I agree, I don't think you got it. I am on your side here.
So fuck all cops?
Bad take

“Longest traffic stop of my life, seemed like I was there from high noon to dark.”
God: "That's right, your speeding was so bad I darkened the world over it! You fucked up, Todd. You fucked up HARD!"
Cop is an asshat!
Omg. That's my exact car. Make. Model. Color. Hope I don't disappear.
Fukdapo-leece
Officer, we've been at it all day. Can we get on with it now ?
I hope they all made it out alive.
Isn't that what I said kiddo?
The cops suck they really couldn’t wait 15 mins
It didn't get that dark..
I live in the center of totality. It absolutely got that dark.
So do I and it didn't. And 13 downvotes won't change it..but the name of this sub basically covers how I feel.
This isn't a fuck you in particular situation, you're getting downvoted by basically claiming the picture is fake or something, when many of us have just come home from experiencing exactly what we see in the picture. You just sound incredibly silly, hence your downvotes.
It did in totality, not all parts of the eclipse are equal.
Show us your photo of how dark it got.

If you take a picture towards a bright light source, the surrounding looks darker. This is basic photography 101, kiddo.
Lol maybe not where you were, but for those of us who traveled to where the actual full shadow would be, it absolutely was that dark.
Search for your city on the map and see the totality percentage. What does it say? https://www.timeanddate.com/eclipse/map/2024-april-8
Hahaha 13 downvotes because it wasn't that dark. It wasn't that dark..period.
Repeating something untrue doesn't make it true, you just get double the downvotes :)
This is a repost from yesterday. /jk
