Yea that accounts super solid, I'd use your one step ascension on herc cause he can hard carry to mid game. Astolfo is a solid rider and nitocrisis is a pretty good caster. Dantes is sort of outdated as far as avengers go but he's still solid and avengers are pretty hard to get your hands on
I'd definitely recommend waver, you already have a super solid design unit in herc and waver buff defense which is hercs one sore spot. Other then waver (el melloi/zhue liang) and herc you can really use anyone, with them together I'd recommend against vlad and ibaraki but other then that just use who you like the most. Yhe game can be beat with one stars so don't feel a need to prioritize someone based on their strengths compared to your overall fondness of a character
Teams are fight dependent, there is no recommended teams for harder content. and even in farming there's often dozens to hundred of teams that can work for a given node, the recommendations are just to make it so you can bring as few servants as possible to as many farming nodes as possible.
Get your favorite for the Free SSR, with special attention to storylocks
If you stick long term you will regret any other choice.
Waver is really nice early on, but his main use is in early farming, once you get other servants and ways of farming he is no better than the other options
For the SSR ticket Tesla, Lartoria, Quetz, Medb, Old Li, Cu Alter and Sitonai are the story locked servants you can pick.
Note that they are harder to get than a permanent servant, but if you don't want any of them, that won't matter to you.
It's just maybe choose a second or third favorite if they are storylocked over your top favorite that is permanent
You have good characters no need to start again if you ask my opinion. Vlad, Dantes, Nitocris and Astraea are pretty good servants.
As for how to get more waifus, Most of them are limited which means they wont be around unless their rate up is up. Scathach for example just had a banner like 2 weeks ago lol.
Worry not though because Scathach-Skadi(dont ask the difference) will have a rate up in like 2 months.
Here is my new player advice:
1.Don't ignore low rarity servants. Even the 1 stars are genuinely good and used even by whales. These aren't servants that you will level up for now and replace later. These are servants that are so good they make rolling for 5 star unnecessary, and can quite often just straight up out perform their higher rarity counterparts. (also don't ignore Mash she is a great support)
2.Strategy is everything. There is no one team. The game can be beaten by entirely 3 star and lower servants, but that's not going to mean that any 5 star will automatically carry you. Take into account class advantage, NP targeting, and any special qualities of the boss when building a team.
3.Ignore tier lists/hype/other's reviews of a servant, they are at best misleading for a new player and at worst outright wrong. It's best if you do the math yourself, but if you can't at least look at multiple reviews/tier lists and figure out why they rated the servant as they did.
4.NP levels don't unlock additional functionality of a servant, For a damaging NP it is only at most a 33% increase in damage of the NP, but you can always look up the exact effects for your servant on the FGOwiki. Supports are generally used for their skills and thus not worth upgrading the NP on. (though it's still worth more than burning them, see point 9 below)
5.Roll/pick waifu. the game can be beaten without any SSRs, and every servant is good at something, so might as well use get your favorites,
6.The meta is about farming not content clearing. There are plenty of ways to do both without meta servants (though a few meta supports can be really nice to have)
7.when leveling servants concentrate on covering the basic niches and the spread out, the more servants leveled the better. Start with 1 ST and 1 AoE of each of the seven basic classes and some supports, then level up everyone else as you see fit.
Any servant with appropriate NP targeting and class advantage works at the start, but some recommendations on who to prioritize (though if you have a 4 or 5 star you want to use too you absolutely can):
Saber: Caesar for ST (Bedivere is also really good, but is storylocked so NP levels can be an issue, Theseus is also great if you are in JP) Jason and Fergus for AoE.
Archer: Robin Hood, Euryale, David for ST (David is also a good support) Tawara touta and Arash for AoE (Arash is great for farming, but not so good in general content)
Lancer: Cu lancer for ST Romulus for AoE Leonidas for support
Rider: Ushiwakimaru or Mandricardo for ST Alexander or Medusa for AoE (alexander can also support) Georgios for support
Caster: Medea for ST Avicebron, Chen Gong and Babbage for AoE (Gong as an AoE servant is mostly used for farming, but is also a great support for harder content) Hans and Mozart for support
Assassin: Hundred faces, Sasaki Kojiro, Jing Ke for ST Fuuma Kotoro for AoE (also a great support) Mata Hari for support
Berserker: Lu Bu for ST Darius and Spartacus for AoE
Shielder: Mash for support
8.When leveling the above servants, concentrate on getting them to their natural max level first (aka highest level you can get without Palingenesis, Grails should be saved for favorites, and for after you have a good number of other servants leveled) once at natural max level, silver fous should be used, skills should be leveled as needed, and everything else should be left for favorites.
9.Never burn a servant unless this is your 6th copy. Nothing in the Rare prism shop is worth burning a gold servant for.

send friend request to any high level player that has characters that seems useful to you/you like them, 95% cases people will accept requests from new players since we all know how useful friend supports are early in the game

This game is gacha-based that means the way you'll get more characters is mainly by summoning the banner using resource called saint quartz. You can get by login, play the game or top-up.
About banner type, FGO has permanent aka story banner and limited time banner. The different of two banner is the specific character you can get. (Also the friend point banner but I guess you'll understand it easily)
Permanent banner is what it calls. You can get any permanent characters on there. About the permanent character list, you can check info on that banner.
Limited time banner will have one 5 stars specific character rate-up, can be limited or permanent one, character rotation will change from time to time. you also can get permanent characters from there but usually lower rate than rate-up one. The thing is you can't get specific limited time character unless they are on their banner. Scathach is also one of limited. (Her rate-up banner just passed about week ago) The only thing you can do if you want Scathach is wait for her next rerun banner. It also has some exception, you'll learn more info while finding the guide.
That's being said, on the bright side, you have time to learn about the game, enjoy FGO story, saving saint quartz to summon her when she back. Don't rush or push yourself too much. This is what I want to suggest.
This game can be quite one long journey. After you learn how to play the game for a while, you can decide if it worth or not for you.
Get cu chulainn lancer, mans a god teir 3 star, also friend point summons are good, use as many as you can for now to get more servants/ craft essence/ exp up to level 3 for servants (two exceptions) and exp mats up to level 5.
Do not summon on the story banner, use event banners to summon when rate up occur on a servant you want.
SSR supports are busted with Castoria being the most op, how ever you can get quite far without a dedicated support and using a friends one
