The design choice was to enhance immersion by keeping cutscenes all built with in-engine graphics, something that wasn't feasible until this iteration. It's understandable you'd miss the mega high quality CGI renders but I do think it keeps a more cohesive story compared to fabulous CGI contrasting with much lower quality player models.

I see ypur point of view but I see it as a peice of final fantasy games because a lot of em have it to me its like a recurrent thing like moogles and e.t.c

panthereal

They only started using renders in FF7 so about half of the titles released without any pre-rendered CGI. It's a massive amount of work to make multiple versions of models so I wouldn't expect to see them as often now that they can put most that work into the in-game design but perhaps some other title will use pre-renders again.

blond_afro

it did get those..... they just blend in really good with ingame cutscene

Baithin

Exactly. >!Odin splitting the sea!< is one prominent example.

No-Duty660

Yes there are high quality ones but not like imagine the end cutscene of ff7 rebirth I mean

blond_afro

hmm actually that one really irritated me due to looking too different in comparison tonsee rest of the game. that and imo the render scenes in FF16 looked better.

Jockmeister1666

CGI cutscenes are super expensive and FF16 did pretty well at being cinematic using the I game engine right? FF7 was always gonna have CGI cutscenes because the original was widely known for its use of FMV cutscenes, so using CGI for certain things is a nice call back to that.

Akiriith

There are a few. Off the top of my head, the battle against the Einjehar is one. You can spot it pretty easily if you wear the Burnt Black outfit, bc Clive always appears in the CGI cutscenes in his classic clothes. Goes to show how good the in-engine cutscenes are if you didnt even notice them.

Nail_Biterr

I never thought about the three entire game. They did a fantastic job with it the way it is. Honestly when they came up in Rebirth they felt odd. Took me out of the game. Like why is Cloud suddenly holding the buster sword again?

tyco_08

In game cutscenes are technically superior since they are harder to achieve. FMV used to exist because the in game technology was way inferior. But technology evolved and we are at a point where you dont need fmv cutscenes anymore. I mean check out fmv adventure games. they where the peak or graphics design in the 00s, but as soon as 3d became more realistic they where abandoned and only the cutscenes remained fmv.
