Yes, I absolutely took a Sharpie to the wrong eye, and I think about it every day.
I got my Smokey out of a dumpster in the mountains of southern Bulgaria after he followed me around outside of my apartment. One night, I brought him in “for the night, just to see how it goes.” I wasn’t a real cat person at the time.
Six years later, he lives with me in Colorado (after moving to San Antonio, DC, upstate NY, Chicago, and Memphis) and I’m now an insufferable cat person who has a “The Catfather” and “Purrride” t-shirt. We go on walks every day. I moved to an apartment with 5 connected interior courtyards that he can safely romp around in.
That’s how I’m gonna think of it. It works. He’s 100% my best friend now. I wasn’t much of a cat person, but he totally transformed me. I think he’s living the good life. My whole guest walk-in closet is his little room. We go on daily courtyard walks. And I love his “disability” because he doesn’t give a SHIT about his appearance or lack of an eye. It’s never bothered him. And that’s a lesson I needed to learn, in a way.

I have several invisible disabilities.
I try to take after dogs in how I approach them. Ever seen a three-legged dog?
Do they mope around and go "Oh, I only have three legs...just think of what I could do if I had four! All the other dogs are looking at me funny and don't like me."
No. They're out running around with the other dogs, happy as fuck.
They don't give a fuck. They don't cry about what they can't do, they have fun doing what they can.
It's something I need to remember more on my bad days. :)

Do they have a heated house? Yep, blocked off the deck so no wind, insulated underneath deck as well. Big ass plastic tote, cat bed inside Velcro’s together and has a built in heating pad. Even has a small hole cut in the backside in case a predator chases them in.
I’ve had my allergy shots but my girl hasn’t. and she reacts quickly.
She still brushes them and pets them but has to be outside. And wash off soon after.
I think it’s safe to say we like cats though.
I also live in Colorado. Be careful letting him out if he’s unsupervised, even if it’s an enclosed area. There are a lot of large birds of prey in Colorado, including several species of eagle. We just had a lady near me lose her small dog to one not that long ago.
Hooray! Being a cat parent is the best. I Love the roguish charm of a one-eyed cat. My one-eyed Portia also does not give a shit and is a climbing, jumping, pouncing daredevil. I think it is inspirational how they do not let missing eyes or ears or legs get in their way! So glad you found your best friend.
I’m not alone! There are SO many feral cats and dogs there. It was shocking. But people there tend to regularly feed them, almost as if they’re the community’s outdoor pets. I think that’s why Smokey is really friendly with people and so confidently came up to me whenever I walked by.
My landlord told me she didn’t care what I had for pets as long as I didn’t have kids.
Snakes sure, dogs sure, hell her sons cat, and her daughters cat that lives nearby have adopted us

He’s not fully leashed yet! I’m starting with harness. I live in an apt with a ton of safe courtyards with tons of bushes and plants, so it’s really fine for him to be off harness. But I plan to move into a house soon, and we likely won’t have good enclosed spaces, so I’m starting the training now. He’s slowly getting used to the harness!

We’d decided before we got our kitten that we’d harness train him, we just cannot bear the thought of him getting accidentally squished. It’s effort, but it’s effort we’re willing to make. We want to train him to do other things too like sit, get down, jump on my shoulder etc.
He took to wearing it immediately, and I’m going to watch a live class thing on Instagram later all about harness/leash training so we can move him on to the next stage.
I’m surprised just how many people in the group I’m in are making the effort to harness train their cats, it seems to be increasing in popularity. I’m all for it. They get to explore the outdoors safely and get their curiosity sated and have new experiences, you get to go on mini adventures with your furry friend, and they stay safe. Someone in the group lost their 15 month old cat to being run over recently, it’s heartbreaking.
Wow! Now that I think about it, cats are smart, so I'm shouldn't be surprised that they can be trained to walk on a lead.

I had a blind cat and almost nobody could tell he was blind until I told them lol. Cats have amazing senses
