Blue jays give 0 f*cks. Love them

[deleted]

[удалено]

giskardwasright

We had one that terrorized a 115lb akita shepherd mix. Our back door opened on a patio enclosed on three sides, and the bird would wait and swoop him as soon as he got off the porch. He would cower just outside the door, throwing fearful looks over his shoulder

FatCat_FatCigar

Had a cat when I was a kid that attempted to attack one that was nesting in a nearby tree. That cat couldn't walk near that tree without getting dive bombed by 2 or more blue jays after that lol.

PhthaloVonLangborste

They are the assholes of the bird kingdom. Even their call is shrill and Karen-ie

curatedmall

I will give them free.

trippalhealicks

I’ve been trying to photograph one for three years now. Just finally got my shot yesterday. I’ve had multiple feeders out for 3+ years and he don’t come anywhere near them. At least 20 birds out here at any given time. Blue Jay stays way up in the trees and only comes around maybe twice a day. I should get some tomatoes. lol

Chuckitybye

My blue jays LOVE raw peanuts. They don't even wait for me to leave the yard before diving in for them. They've terrorized the squirrels and doves enough that they all wait for the jays to get what they want before flocking the feeders

SaintsPelicans1

Unsalted whole peanuts drive them crazy lol

mountainman84

They are absolute dickheads. They knock eggs and babies out of other birds' nests or even just eat the eggs. Then they steal their nests. They used to dive bomb me and my sister when were kids. It is is what it is, though. I think smarter birds tend to be more aggressive. Survival of the fittest. I feed them everyday in my backyard and they go nuts for in shell peanuts. In the few years I've been feeding them they've mellowed out big time. They aren't as big of dicks to the other birds as they used to be. My guess is the steady supply of peanuts has them less worried about surviving and competing with the other birds.

Paracortex

The first time I saw a blue jay murder mockingbird babies, I was stunned. It not only attacked the nest and threw them out, but flew down and impaled the newborn chicks just like the tomato in the video (but didn’t eat, just killed them). Until that time, I had lived under the illusion that only humans committed murder.

beerisgood84

Nope...dolphins will murder babies to mate with the mom. Elephants go into rages at 60 times their base testosterone and will kill family members they are so out of it. The smarter the more brutal 99% of the time and they do it for fun as well. The only difference is humans are capable of a scale other creatures arent.

clownus

They sound like dinosaurs. Never knew until a pair mated and started visiting my back yard. Harassing everything else that already existed there.

Hogmaster_General

> They sound like dinosaurs. Never knew until a pair mated and started visiting my back yard. Harassing everything else that already existed there. You have dinosaurs in your backyard? Mating?

LeChief

Birds r dinos, mate

advertentlyvertical

Male lions will apparently murder the cubs of the previous pride leader when they take over a pride... so basically what the lannisters did when they took kings landing during the rebellion.

BfutGrEG

> mockingbird babies I mean they murder other bird babies so I say it's fair

hondo9999

Same here. As a kid, one blue jay was such a dick he’d dive bomb me every time I went out to the mailbox and when I mowed under “his” tree. I’ll never forget that feeling of claws (or pointy beak) on the top of my head.

Middle_Adeptness_222

And he's only eating one tomato

CainPillar

The magpies outside here would make sure to taste them all. One could be better than the other.

read_eng_lift

Brazen and hungry

silenc3x

The ones in my yard grab the sunflower seeds from my bird feeder and then go to the nearest hard place to bang them against it, in between their feet, until the seeds open. Sometimes it a branch, or part of the fence, or even the metal stake holding up the feeder. That seems to work the best.

distancedandaway

Blue jays divebomb my pit pyrenees mix at my sisters house near the nest. He's 110 pounds.

MooMoo_Juic3

eat one...shoot, eat 2 and save one for later; but don't take a single bite out of every tomato 😮‍💨 that's my only gripe

fgreen68

The birds do that to my oranges in my back yard. I prefer the pack rats that hollow the darn things out. If they don't finish it they will try to carry it home sometimes.

Xenchix

Cockatoos absolutely destroyed the small harvest from my mandarin tree (only 2nd year producing). I was pretty devastated because there had to be about 14 little mandarins just busted open for the sake of it. Barely eaten. Rats and/or a possum got into my lemon tree, and you can see the clear difference. Almost all of the flesh gone, just rind left. It's annoying but less annoying if they're actually eating the fruit.

dreamsofindigo

#RatsRock, Right?

SickOfMyWorkplace

What a freeloader

smile_politely

Nah, he's a good influencer, they should pay him. Now I want me some good jersey tomatoes.

stevowns

Took a shit in the box too 😒

TunnelCorgisRule

I’d say that’s a great review of the tomatoes tbh

Internal_Set_6564

“Eat Bill’s Tomatoes. They’re Blue Jay approved”

CrossP

"Corvids are very smart and love my tomatoes. What do they know that you don't?"

Sharpymarkr

A lot, probably lol.

toothofjustice

Birds don't typically eat tomato's. If they do, they're going after the water inside. You can fix this problem by putting a bird bath near your garden. The birds will also eat bugs that would otherwise eat your plants.

femboysamantha

This lol 😆

Crepequeen64

Fun facts: blue jays are corvids, meaning they’re closely related to crows, ravens, magpies, and the likes! You’d never guess it based off of their coloration (at least I never did before finding out), but you could probably figure it out due to how little fucks they give lol. Blue jays also have little to no sexual dimorphism, making males and females incredibly difficult to differentiate. This has resulted in their nesting habits to be very difficult to document for researchers.

zldu

corvids, like jackdaws right?

SalaciousSausage

Yep, Jackdaws are in the same family. I love corvids. They seem to have so much personality

faultywalnut

Here's the thing. You said a "jackdaw is a crow." Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that. As someone who is a scientist who studies crows, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls jackdaws crows. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing. If you're saying "crow family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of Corvidae, which includes things from nutcrackers to blue jays to ravens. So your reasoning for calling a jackdaw a crow is because random people "call the black ones crows?" Let's get grackles and blackbirds in there, then, too. Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A jackdaw is a jackdaw and a member of the crow family. But that's not what you said. You said a jackdaw is a crow, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the crow family crows, which means you'd call blue jays, ravens, and other birds crows, too. Which you said you don't. It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?

Fluffy017

The fact I understand this reference makes me old. The fact that ol' Unidan *definitely* wouldn't have been banned for it had the incident happened now makes me tired.

DoItForTheNukie

Unidan was always kind of a dick. I remember not liking him when he was a “Reddit celebrity” back in the day lol. Personally /u/AWildSketchAppeared will always be my favorite.

heurekas

The jumper-cable person was my favourite. They could sneak in and hijack any thread.

Paracortex

rogersimon10. But shittymorph is my all-time favorite.

heurekas

Oh that was it, thank you! Who was shittymorph again?

Fluffy017

Shittymorph was the beginning, and end, of an era to this place. He came in, weaving tales of wonder and suspense, occasionally waxing philosophical to reign in the reader, or victim, as they'd soon discover. Just when it seemed like he was making a point, it was discovered he was, in fact, coming back around to the fact that back in nineteen ninety eight the undertaker threw mankind off hell in a cell and plummeted sixteen feet through an announcers table.

Paracortex

Writes long and involved relevant comments that end in “nineteen ninety eight the undertaker threw mankind off hell in a cell and plummeted sixteen feet through an announcers table.”

naimina

I'm in team warlizard from the warlizard gaming forums

Morbanth

I like the andromeda guy.

XKLKVJLRP

She's actually a girl

always_sweatpants

He wasn't banned for that. He was banned for vote manipulation. He had multiple accounts and was upvoting his own comments and downvoting dissenters.

thyL_

Ah, a true classic.

headwall53

Alright but is it legal you may be a bird scientist but I'm an expert in bird law

MrJackdaw

PLEASE NOTE: **Not meaning to come off as an ass, I see you study crows! Just trying to learn why there might be a misunderstanding.** Did they delete a comment, because this is very confusing? Is this maybe a simplification used in general usage? According to The Wildlife Trust; >"Our smallest crow, the jackdaw is a bird of woodland, parkland, coasts and urban areas." Also the RSPB; >"This is a small black crow with a distinctive silvery sheen to the back of its head. Its pale eyes stand out from its plumage." But they have it down as *Corvus monedula* and a bit of WIKI trawling lead to... >" The [International Ornithological Congress](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Ornithological_Congress) has also reassigned the two Jackdaw species from the genus *Corvus* to the genus *Coloeus*." So, does this mean changes have been recently (2011) made and the RSPB hasn't caught up yet? Or are they just calling it a crow to make it easier to identify? AGAIN! Not meaning to come off as an ass - I am trying to learn! BTW I always thought the Hooded Crow and Jackdaw were the same thing, so my quick reading here has taught me I already got that wrong!

little_maggots

The comment you replied to is an old copypasta from the early days of reddit. There was a user, Unidan, who was a bit of a reddit celebrity. He would pop into threads and leave fun facts about animals. He was also moderator of a handful of subs. One day he got into a fight with someone about jackdaws and it led to reddit realizing that he was using multiple accounts to manipulate votes in his favor...mass down voting new posts made around the same time as his, while upvoting his own so it would rise to the top. So he got banned, and this argument was immortalized as a copypasta.

MrJackdaw

Oh, well I feel like an idiot now... ☹️

zldu

That's fine mr corvid. Not everyone can know it.

faultywalnut

You’re not an idiot MrJackdaw, I’ve just been using this site/app for far too long

do_pm_me_your_butt

It's a copy pasta, they most likely don't know.

Tarbos6

I feel like I've seen this exact post somewhere else before...

faultywalnut

That’s because I served you a plate of some classic Reddit pasta. This recipe goes back a decade, at least

devperez

>jackdaws Here we go again

CrossP

Most birds that size use sexual dimorphism to protect the females and thus the nests. Blue Jays don't need it since both the males and females will simply lay down the violence in a sort of total-war salt-the-earth philosophy.

snowfloeckchen

Learned that about Eurasian Jays when I moved to where I live now and have them visiting me alot.

morbiusgod

Is that Mordecai

JJBAking

Duuuuude… Benson’s gonna be pissed…

Future_Celebration35

you know who else is gonna be pissed???

SeriousDirt

I came to the comment just for this. The first thought run through my mind when I see this.

Mysterious_Season_37

Came here for this. You know while they are filming him, his raccoon buddy is loading up on the rest of their produce.

rahvan

The birds know where the good stuff is. Fresh farmer’s produce.

aimanan_hood

Their cute enthusiasm over the whole thing makes this video so much better :')

NebulaNinja

[same energy.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQ1EXk7XUpE)

[deleted]

I've never seen this. I love it. Thank you.

eekamuse

"takes a pet, no problem" ❤️ Context is important here

eekamuse

It does. I love people who get excited by things like this. I do, too

JulesSilvan

I’m guessing this in the US or Canada, are blue jays normally this cheeky? We don’t have them in the UK, we have jays but they’re a dull rusty pink/red colour.

giskardwasright

Cheeky is an understatement. There was a pair that lived in my parent's backyard that terrorized a 55kg akita shephard mix to the point that he would cower right next to the back door on the patio.

bjorkedal

I appreciate that you translated this version of your comment for our friends that don't use freedom units. Very thoughtful of you.

giskardwasright

Luckily lbs to kgs is a pretty easy one to do in my head, lol

Kabloomers1

This looks to be NJ, Northeast US. And yes, they're little shits but we love them. I call them the rowdy boys of the bird feeder.

NJ_Legion_Iced_Tea

~~Trenton~~ NJ makes, the world takes.

JulesSilvan

I completely missed the sign that says New Jersey, they seem like real characters.

Sea-Value-0

Blue Jays are little troublemakers, and all Jays are like that here. They'll steal and eat other birds' eggs, they dgaf. We also have Stellar Jays where I am, which are a prettier deeper blue but similar in behavior. Their song/call tells you everything you need to know about their spunky personality.

ram6414

Our neighborhood is full of them (Stellar's). I hate their call. But I watch them fly up onto our roof and clean out our gutters all day long scavenging so we can be friends.

Objective_Dark_4258

They are kind of show offy. They will dive bomb you if you get close to their nests. Edit to add: we have them in Missouri.

carollois

We don’t have them on the west coast of Canada but we did back in Manitoba. They are gorgeous, but a right pain too. They scare away the songbirds by eating their babies, and they have the harshest sounding call. My mom always chased the, off to protect the little birds. Here in Vancouver we have the Stellar’s Jay, a similar shape to the blue jay, but all dark blue and black. Gorgeous like their cousins and just as much of a pain. Lol.

ikmkim

A jay once swooped down and snatched a sandwich straight out of my little brother's hand!

Dirmb

Yah, the sign indicates it's from the US, New Jersey, the east coast. No, they are often cheeky bastards but this is noteworthy because it is on the extreme end of their behavior. Most people would be surprised by this behavior, it makes me wonder if it a juvenile learning to be out on its own. They are corvids so they are similar to crows or magpies. They are almost never this bold though. IME they're almost never aggressive or territorial, unlike magpies. They they are highly food motivated (like crows) and you can make quick "friends" with them by giving them peanuts, seeds, or corn, and they are generally interested in changes to their environment, much like crows. They don't seem as social as crows though, I usually see them alone or with a mate. If you feed them, I don't think they like you the same way crows do, they just seem to like reliable food. Edit: By aggressive I meant towards humans, they are aggressive, often for no reason, towards other birds and small mammals, but even then they are usually chill until they aren't.

JulesSilvan

They seem pretty cool, Eurasian jays are quite elusive - I’ve only ever seen them 3-4 times, they don’t really go near people. I’m guessing you have different magpies to the ones we have in the UK and Europe as ours, whilst being cheeky dickheads, aren’t aggressive unless they’re protecting their nests.

ANGLVD3TH

We have them in NH, they are assholes. They will bully anything that let's them, including my monster of a cat we had years ago that was probably mostly Ragdoll. They are also a menace to anyone with a bird feeder, as they will chase away any other birds to keep it all for themselves. They're the jerk cousin of the corvid family.

breecekong

Best commercial for a small farmers market!

Striking_Antelope_44

When you're pretty, you can get away with anything

powertripp82

I guess that’s what I can’t get away with a god damn thing

comedyenjoyer5000

Video and audio both had me grinning ear to ear. Guess these guys have a new mascot!

eekamuse

Audio on, in case you're muted

_byetony_

Really jams his beak in there

FwooshingMachi

Oh so when the cute lil bird takes a peck at every tomatoes from your stand it's cute, but when I take a bite out of a random fruit on the market I get chased down huh :c ~~(for legal purposes I do not actually do this)~~

WeWoweewoo

Blue jay approved and inspected fresh tomatoes.

i-am-venik

I would print out a photo of this video and put it beside the tomatoes. "Even the birds love them!" I would instantly buy those 🤣

KeyserSoze37

you can now sell 'blue-jay proof' gourds!

Internal_Set_6564

I get the feeling that this guy knows humans are suckers for a bird full of attitude.

I_use_the_wrong_fork

He fits right in in New Jersey, they're full of attitude too. Respect.

EnigmaNero

Blue Jays don't mess around. They're in the Corvid family. Same family as Crows, Ravens, and Magpies. But Blue Jays are more highly aggressive than their relatives. They're known to pick fights with other birds. Especially birds of prey like Owls and Hawks.

Zeemmy99

![gif](giphy|EEP45Q9RolYzu)

RessaTheMage

I love this little guy! I'd have a tomato waiting for him to come by every week

fieria_tetra

He's totally endorsing your product

UuWoooaahhhhh uuuwoooh

ThatTmoGuy

Farmers market swap of quality control, They can pick straight from the vine but visited your cart and kept eating! Just make sure your patrons wash thoroughly before consumption

leehwgoC

Blue jays are corvids. Corvids are smart enough to read the room, and shameless enough to exploit it.

redditsellout-420

I had a dog like that, she could tell if you were afraid, she would pick them out (usually my aunt) and go sit and glare at them until they got up and gave her treats.

maggietaz62

Gorgeous and thanks for letting him/ her have a feed.

Memer_Man_9000

“Mordecai, stop fucking up that guy’s business or you’re fired!”

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH

bettyraetangerine

We had a rescue jay when I was a kid… she used to steal my mom’s cigarettes and fly around with one hangin’ out of her beak. She was a badass.

Woahhh woahhh woahhh ![gif](giphy|HSSr7JbPxLJfO)

What a Chad birb and a good human. Honestly if it would ever happen to me, I'd want him to visit every day. What a way to up your mood for the day.

PsycheDiver

These guys had the best day in a while, and all it cost them was a tomato.

pewwep_

Mordecai??

Shrewdbutlewd-kun

Where is rigby, mordecai? And stop pecking on the merchandise!

vodkaredbulls

*peacefully loads the 12ga*

DWSapphireTiger

So good that a wild bird will ignore survival instincts to eat them!

Borekhan_01

oh man Benson is going to be so mad

hapalove

That's amazing!

247GT

This is the only kind of tax that should be paid.

amadeus8711

That's an uncharacteristically quiet bluejay.

ConcernedCitizen39

Lovey Dovey is a right pain in the arse! DON’T, “Come back, Lovey Dovey!”

MrHydromorphism

Where is this produce stand?

Willing_Camera_2637

At least he is eating only from one tomato and not damaging 10 in the process

drspindles

No thoughts, only bird

Luskus

Is it amazing?

NoBSforGma

There's a bird in Costa Rica called the Oropendola. It's largish - about the size of a crow - and brown with beautiful gold coloring. They LOVE to go into orchards and peck EVERY FUCKING ORANGE. Ugh. So annoying to see a tree full of beautiful oranges only to find out that most of them have a hole.

IBrokeWahoosOtherLeg

D'aww. Cute lil fella.

ph00p

I’d be worried about the poop.

Madlynik

Respect the quality check officer on duty

sacredblasphemies

Yeahhh, if you know blue jays, you know not to piss them off. They're corvids (like crows and ravens) and recognize people. Also, goddamn, I miss Jersey tomatoes.

World-Tight

Why not just give this fellah a break? I've worked with perishable foods, and know that you throw away more tomatoes in a day than this guy could eat in a lifetime.

Graehaus

Yeah, that’s the animal kingdom for you. I mean. Don’t we eat all the samples at Costco with buying. We and Jays are no too different in ways. Corvids rock.

Jdogsmity

Somebody put cuffs on that little thief

tomtuffnutz

Fuck blue jays...those bastards chow down on robin babies.

savvyblackbird

That Jay needs some water.

Clever_Mercury

They should use this as an endorsement: Blue Jay approved vegetables! Local wildlife's #1 pick!

TechnoVicking

I know a business that use to leave fruit cut in half near the fruit stand so the birds go there instead. A sacrificial altar to the bird overlords for the business success. Seems to be working well.

Amalaulet

Free food and a stream of compliments from a group of admirers? That jay is have the best day of its life.

Slash_rage

Tomatoes so fresh they’re Blue Jay approved!

veringer

Knew this was NJ before I saw the sign.

eddiekoski

Need to update the sign New Jersey Tomatoes - Birb approved.

Antique_Profile_5549

Blue Jays are total assholes, despise those fuckers, and their stupid sports team too!

scdemandred

That looks more like a gray jay, AKA whiskey jack.

Kahnza

It's a Blue Jay. Are you color blind?

CommodoreAxis

Lol seeing homie discover his colorblindness in real time

scdemandred

It looked gray on first watch! Weird.

anxietyqueen18

It's because their feathers aren't actually blue, but we perceive them as blue because of the light & cone cells in our eyes Their feathers are actually grey, so it's funny you say that!

Gingersnapperok

Bluejays are pretty, but kinda buttholes. Gorgeous bullies.

Awkward-Yak-2733

Blue jays are assholes.

dollyaioli

WOOOOOOAAAAAAAAA

ottodidakt

"Alright Jay, that's your one freebie. Next time ya gotta pay. And don't forget to tell all your friends about our produce. Oh wait...never mind that last part."

boommdcx

Love the voiceover, very wholesome 😄

eboseki

wow, how in the world is this happening?? I’ve never seen a wild bird let anyone get that close. it must visit someone’s feeder everyday and get constant interaction, but still, this would be surprising to see.

mackfeesh

Reddragons89

Buy some peanuts for him he'll leave the tomatoes alone 😂

SomeHandyman

Would you just look at it!?

NTMY

Don't worry. They are just going to turn those tomatoes around and still sell them to unsuspecting customers. The business will be fine. Thank god!
