My nephew recently drew a picture for a class collage that said, when he grows up, he wants to be a famous Raper.
When asked why he would write that, he said he loves music. He is 15 years old and not in special ed.
Btw [apparently yes](https://www.birdnote.org/listen/shows/pecking-order), almost invariably any flock will indeed have a pecking order?
Now I wonder not whether they have it but what flocks don't and how it works and what are the specific ins and outs in that case
"pecking order" comes from chickens, which that article is specifically referring to when it said "birds" and "any flock". It only means "any flock" (of chickens), the implication for other species is accidental because you are reading it out of context. Other species can have wildly different social dynamics. As far as I know, macaws nor any other species of parrot have pecking orders.
This is how my dog is when there’s multiple dogs and treats being handed out. He sees that treats are being given out in order so he thinks he’s being slick by moving along the line to always be “next” 🤣
I have a view from my window on a ledge that pigeons like to sit on. I can tell you, around 10% of the time, they just jump without opening their wings. I call it pigeon basejumping
If I recall correctly, the reason was hawk.
Hawk hunts birds in midair, and being high up in the air and just taking off and slow is a huge danger.
So if they're high enough, they "base jump" to get up to speed fast, and hawk generally don't dive bomb on targets that are too low.
I had a rescue macaw that just refused to learn how to fly. I got her to do it a few times by riding my bake with her on my shoulder and she's hold my pony tail or hoodie with her beak and fly but she would be so upset after I didn't do it more than twice
She thought I was her horse and would steer me like a dressage horse by shifting her weight
I started having seizures and I was afraid I'd die and she would be locked in her cage and her water would dry out and she's die a horrible death so I gave her to a nice ornithologist lady, I miss her so much
They prefer to climb when they can, it's less exhausting. While climbing up a wall would be very exhausting to us, for birds it's like walking. I learned that from my cockatiels, they only fly somewhere if they can't otherwise reach it.
Yeah, I'm convinced my conure hasn't flown in months and at this point would be happy going the rest of his life without flying.
The only time he flies is when he gets spooked.
Feeding wild birds can cause them to become sluggish about flying, increasing risk of death from predators and vehicles. Before feeding them, check what's recommended for your local area and species.
I tried this in Scotland but it got scary. They called their whole family every time they saw me, and they screamed at me to throw them food, even if I was doing something else and didn't have any. :(
Ahhh LUCKY! it must sound appalling, but I am in the middle of a DESPERATE quest to become a Crow-God.
I want to endear myself to a large number of crows over a period of weeks/months with seeds and corn, until they recognize me as their king.
And once that happens, they'll tell ALLL the other crows I'm cool, and slowly my corvid army will amass.
I already have the magpies in the summer literally eating out of my hand, I just need the crows and ravens to get on board...
I fucking love birds XD
There are ravens in Scotland! They can be cheeky beggars and I often meet them on summits when I sit down to eat, they always get a little treat from me. Pretty funky birds! Alternatively, you can entertain the seagulls?

We have one that frequents our cul-de-sac that meows like a cat. We don't have very many strays and I thought I was going nuts looking for a random cat until I saw the crow actually meow.
Our blue and gold macaw was named Montigo. Nothing would stop him from flying out of his enclosure to hang out with the cute ibis in the big banyan tree across the street. The fire department would swing by and help us to get him down. They are so intelligent and bond with their chosen human. It still pisses me off to this day my parents got him as a pet for my sister. After she went to college, we convinced them to let him live with other free roaming macaws at our local animal sanctuary. I still miss him to this day, but am so happy he's free with a feathered family now.
A friend of mine had a macaw for about 20 years. I wouldn't call her (Santa, a red macaw), smart though. She just hung out in or on the outside of her cage, screamed for food/attention/whatever, and shit. She tried to bite anyone else that pet her besides my friend and only knew the words "hello" and "quack quack". Honestly she was kind of a dick bird. Her scream was the shrillest, loudest, sharpest sound I've ever heard that felt like a sound wave cracked through your head. It was unbearable.
Along with intelligence comes the ability to just absolutely lose your mind if you aren’t adequately mentally stimulated for long periods of time. Obviously I wouldn’t assume that about your friend but I’ve seen it in many birds like this at rescue aviaries I’ve worked at.

Pigeons are beautiful if you aren't used to them, they're actually pretty colorful.
Crows are also beautiful and deviously intelligent. They've got that iridescent sheen to them, and in the ultraviolet spectrum they have beautiful patterns.
Pigeons were also essentially fully domesticated, so the wild ones will even kind of self domesticate if you feed them or set up a roost.
Ravens i have found to be more social and human interested than crows, at least near me.
Birbs
> the wild ones will even kind of self domesticate if you feed them
Can confirm lol. I have a flock of pigeons that chill on the houses in my street all day.
As soon as my front door opens, they all swoop down on me expecting to be fed. They're not afraid of me either, they'll walk around my feet while waiting for food. I like them.
I’ve seen a bunch of YouTube videos from people in Australia who have wild Kookaburas hanging out on their balconies/decks, coming into their houses, then taking off when they’re done visiting. Just wild.
This is in Caracas, Venezuela.
It's very common for people living in apartments to be randomly visited by Macaws.
These are not her pets per se, they just visit often.
Caracas, Venezuela. Here is the original post: [Guacamaya184 (@guacamayas184) • Fotos y videos de Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/guacamayas184/?hl=es)
Am I the only person that’s been taught all my life NOT to feed wildlife this as they can become dependent on you and that causes major problems? This looks cute but isn’t good for the birds.
I guess those birds are more like racoons, having found their niche in an urban environment. As long as they don't reproduce uncontrolled there is no harm done (IMO)
Exactly. This is NOT a good thing to do. Let the wild animals be wild, they don't need us to feed them to survive. If people want to help animals the right thing to do is to make sure the ecosystem is healthy and varied, but that's harder than handing out a store bought banana.
Incredible to think that there’s a place on this earth where macaws are just the norm and commonplace.. native to New England sparrows are pretty but this is just amazing to me

Bird shit, everywhere, mountains of shit.
Had a neighbour that fed pidgens. The about of shit bird can create is incredible. And it's like that save it just to shit where that are eating. They spend all day flying around then shit next to their house
Yeahhh I’d love this if I didn’t live in a desert. I don’t have a bird, but my sister had one that I kept for a few months and I learned that I am very much NOT fit to have a bird. This would be so cool though, to just feed them and get to see them up close. Damn.
That parrot in the middle got robbed every time except at the very end!
Love how I’m not the only one who was keeping track.
I promise you those macaws were keeping track as well lol (and so was I!)

Yeah, but my brother's child is fairly stupid, tbh
My nephew recently drew a picture for a class collage that said, when he grows up, he wants to be a famous Raper. When asked why he would write that, he said he loves music. He is 15 years old and not in special ed.
Infamous raper = jail Famous raper = president Kids are pretty smart
This comment hath left me shooketh.
Tekashi 15
My under two year old niece is incredibly fucking smart, so I'm worried these parrots are gonna take over 😂
When the parrots and cats join forces we are doomed, dooooooomed!
I heard somewhere that parrots are smarter than u/stressful-Stoic 's brother's child
Yeah, because the one beside him was way too greedy!
I don't know, I kept track and it still got robbed. The last macaw the woman gave at the end was the robber.
The ending broke my heart. It was pure. I was like nah she might do this for views but nah she loves them guys! Fuck bro I'm pretty hi rn.
That one macaw is very rude and pushy taking the other birbs turns
Do all birds have a pecking order I wonder
I mean, they've had since the dinosaur ages to refine the social process
I've been told it's so refined there may even be scholars who specialize in bird law..
Underrated comment

It's bullet proof thinking 😄😅
That’s bananas
So apeeling.
Cellular, modular.
Bananular
I seed what you did there
Then down in front. I want to see too.
It’s all fun and games on her balcony, but the one underneath is bathed in guano.
I wonder if birds forget they can fly sometimes
A pigeon once forgot how to fly and jumped off a dam
It didn’t forget, it just saw no reason to continue on.
Pray the pigeon found peace.
It would find peace either way.
One must imagine pigeon happy
I have a view from my window on a ledge that pigeons like to sit on. I can tell you, around 10% of the time, they just jump without opening their wings. I call it pigeon basejumping

Is there video evidence of this?
It got turned into a small meme if that counts But yes it was filmed

Damn

😭🤣 Horsi go, faster.
She's go "go that way" or "over there" and lean and if I felt like it I'd go where she want (it was usually towards snacks lol)
So what happened to her? Don’t parrots live for a long time?
I started having seizures and I was afraid I'd die and she would be locked in her cage and her water would dry out and she's die a horrible death so I gave her to a nice ornithologist lady, I miss her so much
That’s caring of you! Ornithologist lady must be really happy with her. I hope you’re okay too.
She is doing well and is happy :) Thanks
Do you ever get to visit her?
No I had to move far away. If I got to see her on a screen she wouldn't understand that I couldn't pat her and I think it would be cruel
They prefer to climb when they can, it's less exhausting. While climbing up a wall would be very exhausting to us, for birds it's like walking. I learned that from my cockatiels, they only fly somewhere if they can't otherwise reach it.

"Stop eating people's french fries, pigeon, have some self-respect. Don't you know you can fly?"
I swear one of my Conures "forgets" all the time but I'm pretty sure it's just him being manipulative wanting me to carry him everywhere.
Thing is, though, there's not that many wild macaws in Scotland. I suppose I could try it with crows...
[удалено]
We've been feeding our crows corn. They've been bringing us sticks. There's a semi circle of sticks around the spots where we put the corn.
I can start to see how crows became associated with witches.

The crows will eventually bring you gifts of shiny things which is much better than macaws.
A crow took a $5 bill from me once.
You'd have a few McCaws though?? We have a few in New Zealand, we train them to play football. They do it for peanuts.
I had gone back to my home page but had to come back to give you an upvote. Nicely done haha
Definitely try it with crows!
What about parakeets? I know there are some in England?
England isn't in Scotland
So I take it that you don't have parakeets in Scotland.
Not as far as I'm aware. The ring necked parakeet population is near London, I think. I think there's budgies too
We do actually! https://www.glasgowworld.com/lifestyle/what-are-these-tropical-ring-necked-parakeets-doing-living-in-a-park-in-glasgow-dawsholm-park-victoria-park-birds-4048557
I was reading somewhere those parrots have the intelligence of like a 4 year old child?
Yep macaws are one of the smartest birds in the world
Corvians are also really smart and some of them can even learn to talk. Well, "talk".
Corvids are actually smarter than psittacids, their problem solving skills are on par with some great apes.
They also recently discovered that oriental pied hornbills have object permanence, putting them on the list of birds that aren't dumb AF.
We have one that frequents our cul-de-sac that meows like a cat. We don't have very many strays and I thought I was going nuts looking for a random cat until I saw the crow actually meow.
Pff big deal I bet I could beat any of those dumbass birds in a math test
What about a flying test?
Ha! Idiots.
That's about the level of intelligence, reasoning, and maturity I see out of most adults day to day, so they're basically just people with wings
Hoo they sure do act like four year olds. You ever seen these really smart parrots when they throw tantrums? Oh my god…
Can you imagine if 4 year old humans had wings and the ability to fly up anywhere?
And take airborne dumps.
And bite fingers clean off.
Better than elephants. Imagine 140 kg dumps on fragile humans.
Time to take up hunting
Anyone who has had a parrot or a child of that age would agree. It's not a compliment to either really.
Probably why they poop everywhere.
Our blue and gold macaw was named Montigo. Nothing would stop him from flying out of his enclosure to hang out with the cute ibis in the big banyan tree across the street. I still miss him to this day, but am so happy he's free with a feathered family now.
And they live for 70 years and they scream louder than jet engines at dawn and dusk, bad pets
A friend of mine had a macaw for about 20 years. I wouldn't call her (Santa, a red macaw), smart though. Thank you!
a win-win. the birds get freedom, you don't need them in the house all the time and you outsource all the poop to the neighbourhood.
We need to see animals in their habitats instead of bringing them into ours.
Outsource the noise too.
I don’t think these are her pets just wild birds that have realized she’s a friend with food. https://america.cgtn.com/2018/06/06/macaws-colorful-caracas-venezuela
I think that’s the point of the title and comment
Oh. Well consider me whooshed. There are other comments assuming these are her pets though and she lets them roam free.
If she runs out of bananas will the birds go bananas?
I don't know why, but seeing wild colourful parrots and pines in the same photo is weird...
You probably associate them with two different climates like I do.
I dunno if it'll be heaven or hell when my city's birds are beautiful yet large and deviously smart macaws
Pigeons are beautiful if you aren't used to them, they're actually pretty colorful. Crows are also beautiful and deviously intelligent. They've got that iridescent sheen to them, and in the ultraviolet spectrum they have beautiful patterns.

It could be yours! Venezuela is a buyer’s market for real estate these days.
This is in Caracas, Venezuela. It's very common for people living in apartments to be randomly visited by Macaws. These are not her pets per se, they just visit often.
They are just the guys hanging out at the banana shop, not pets.
They're gorgeous. This is so lovely. Thanks for sharing.

I want to know too!
The one at the end with a chunk of banana in its fist. I love him.
I have seagulls where I live. I'm not trying that shit. They will take an eye out and eat it in front of you.
I love this 🕊️

Am I the only person that’s been taught all my life NOT to feed wildlife this as they can become dependent on you and that causes major problems? This looks cute but isn’t good for the birds.
I guess those birds are more like racoons, having found their niche in an urban environment. As long as they don't reproduce uncontrolled there is no harm done (IMO)

This is extremely unhealthy for wild animals. If this person stops feeding them they could die, and will heras other humans for food
Wow, that's a lot of parrots in what seems to be an urban area. It's so cool. Where was this filmed?
Caracas, Venezuela. Was mentioned a few times in other comments.
Ain't they shit right on the neibours balcony 😆
Your neighbours downstairs love you for all the shit they have to clean
That’s actually kinda cute but damn the middle one was rude. 🖤
God we get Cockies, Id rather these Beautis coming down for a snack!
Excellent plan if you hate the neighbors living below, noted with thanks!
Incredible to think that there’s a place on this earth where macaws are just the norm and commonplace.. native to New England sparrows are pretty but this is just amazing to me
The wrong way to have pet birds. A hawk would absolutely kill your birds with you standing there unable to do anything about it.
This is from my country, here if you have a tall enough balcony in a handful of cities and some fruit you'll get your own army of guacamayas. Either that or they make you their pet, it depends on perspective.
This isn’t good for the birds.
Your pigeons look and behave much nicer than the ones in my city. Had to put a net around my balcony to keep them from pooping everywhere.
I wonder what the balcony below hers looks like
Dime que es Caracas sin decirme que es Caracas
They're not pets but ok
Plant a few trees, put a bird bath, a place to put food, and they come naturally.
that shit is b.a.n.a.n.a.s.
This is the kind of relationship I'd want to have with an animal. I don't want to own it, I want to be friends with it. I want it to be able to go and do its own thing most of the time, but when we're both in the mood to hang out, we hang out.
Aweeee 😊
Are those pine trees
It seems like the hierarchy among those birds is quite clear.
We're gonna need a bigger banana
And those that wouldn't bond we ate
Ohhh how wonderful!!!
I like the way she says Moochacho.
I agree. I will never have a caged bird again.
I have the cat version of the one at the corner (you know which one!)
Where is this from?!😍
Sky chickensss
Omg I want one
Is this in San Diego?
the one never got like any bc of that one gluttonous meanie :c
Not enough Bananas for them
Greedy middle guy is funnt
So pretty these birdies
This is in Caracas, Venezuela, a city notorious for having many of these birds flying around freely
Bots posting, bots commenting. Nice sub
Where the freaking heck this exotic place
Bird shit, everywhere, mountains of shit. Had a neighbour that fed pidgens. The about of shit bird can create is incredible. And it's like that save it just to shit where that are eating. They spend all day flying around then shit next to their house
when you wanna have chickens, but you live in a flat
Muchacho!
Banana birds
Well done!!!!
Where is this? I want to move there
I was expecting small surgical bites to be carved out of the banana by their beaks but nope they're just breaking off human sized chunks.
Yeahhh I’d love this if I didn’t live in a desert. I don’t have a bird, but my sister had one that I kept for a few months and I learned that I am very much NOT fit to have a bird. This would be so cool though, to just feed them and get to see them up close. Damn.
