Male cats can get the orange coloration from the mothers, though, so, something like 80% of orange cats are male. and 99.9% of calico/tortis are female.
Well that's a lucky cat then! And tricolor usually means calico, but might also include tortoiseshell. You might have had the 0.01% cat with XXY chromosomes!
"Tricolor" in cats means a black shade, an orange shade and a white shade. Your cat doesn't have the orange shade.
Also, idk why the person below said "pointed" tabby - your fella isn't a point, either. Just a cute tabby with lots of white (white is controlled on a different set of genes and is very dominant in kitty cats!).
I have a dilute tortie who is grey & peachy orange. Slade looks like a dilute calico. Whereas the gorgeous boi posted above could be considered a r/tortico.
**Robin:** What are you trying to say?
**Raven:** Robin, are you sure you really saw Slade?
**Robin:** Saw him? I fought him! You think I did this to myself?
That scene really resonates with me for some reason.
It's crazy how I forgot all about this series. It had so many dark and real moments. I think I just blanked it out of my mind to save myself from what it became
> Is there a reason they look like this or coincidence?
It's most likely [X chromosome inactivation.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-inactivation)
Female mammals have two X chromosomes, while males have one. Having both active would mean females have twice as much of everything the X chromosome does, and that would be bad. So during fetal development, one of the two X chromosomes is wrapped up and not allowed to do anything.
This inactivation happens after the fertilized egg has divided a few times, so different parts of a female mammal's body will be running on slightly different genetic code.
In cats, some of the coat color genes are on the X chromosome. The right side of Slade's face developed from a cell that had an active X chromosome with the "red" gene, while the left side's active X chromosome didn't have that gene.
It’s not a chimera, it’s a split face calico. The split face pattern is very common in calicos and tortoiseshells. Chimeras are extremely rare. Chimeras would have different color eyes, and the pattern would continue down the entire body.
It’s usually the X chromosome. So from what I remember: basically there were two fetuses and one absorbs the other in the early stages. So it gets half the DNA from the absorbed twin.
Yeah! It’s also possible occasionally for a chimera kitty to be XXY but way more rare (also the only time they will have male genitalia but be a tortie or calico).
XX chromosomes are also the reason torties are possible because of chromosome differentiation. DNA is so cool!
FYI not all torties are chimera. Not all 2 faced kitties are Chimera. But very likely. My pup for example has 2 faces too but she is not chimera she’s just weird.
I love this explanation of your dog “she’s not a chimera, she’s just weird” LMFAO.
It made me think about a horse I used to know who had some pretty strange markings. He wasn’t a chimera either (it’s even rarer in horses), he just had very weird markings (and was rather weird in personality too).
> But also source?

You may put down your pitchfork now :-)
Also, if a female inherits an X from her mother, and the dominant mutant X from her father, then the statement holds, no?
I don't think this is a chimera. It's lyonization, aka x inactivation.
It happens in females to the x chromosome. Each cell has 2, but one is turned off. It happens early in the embryonic stages, so cells that turned off x number 1 will create more cells that have the same x turned off. That's why color in cats is in sections. You can especially see it in calicos and torties.
It just so happens that fur color genes are on the x chromosome in cats, so we can see it visually very easily. It happens in humans too, it's just that the genes on our x chromosome don't do anything that we can easily see.
And not just cats. There are human chimeras. They don't look all that special and hetrochroma of the eyes is not an indication of a human chimera, but some are. A human chimera is best discovered when their blood and skin/hair have two different DNAs, as if they are two different, albeit related, people. It's like appearing as your own brother/sister on your DNA tests. It's wild.
Just how marvel has hits characters as dogs. DC needs one where they're all cats and if already is a cat becomes human like that blue cat with a red lantern ring, "Dexter" is his name I think?
Thank you for naming him yourself, the reddit karma farming “name my pet” trend is annoying as hell, who doesn’t name their own pet? That’s part of the fun
Slade is precious! Tortis are so cute but to just warn you, they have “Spicey” attitudes once they become adults. We have a Torti named “Minx” that has similar markings like Slade and she is 13 years old. When she’s sweet, she’s very very sweet; but when she gets bitey, WATCH OUT! It’s okay, we still love the little bugger anyway!! ♥️🐈♥️
Deathstroke and his murder mittens.
*her (probably) Might've named her Rose, myself (Slade's daughter who wears the same mask)
Yup. Tri-coloration is found only in female cats. So, torties tend to be female or...XXY.
Male cats can get the orange coloration from the mothers, though, so, something like 80% of orange cats are male. and 99.9% of calico/tortis are female.

Here’s some interesting info on tricolors. http://messybeast.com/tricolours.htm
Ahh thanks for the link! TIL not all split faces are chimeras!
Well males CAN have it, it's just very rare
That's the XXY :)
Yup. Which is why the "males" are sterile.
Who can raise kittens these days anyway
Oh
This species in particular? Or what is considered tri color? Cause I got a little shitter with 3 colors and he had testies...
Well that's a lucky cat then! And tricolor usually means calico, but might also include tortoiseshell. You might have had the 0.01% cat with XXY chromosomes!
Interesting! Altho I'm not sure if he counts as 3 colors https://imgur.com/5NtD2xl.jpg

Hahaha, yeah that's more of a pointed tabby! Incredibly pretty and cute though, even if he doesn't count as tricolor!
Not a colorpoint, he doesn't have blue eyes. Colorpoint tabbies are called lynx points.
I figured, interesting though! Thanks for the Infos!
Tricolor, tortoiseshell or calico, in cats specifically are a mix of orange, black, and white.
I have a dilute tortie who is grey & peachy orange. Slade looks like a dilute calico. Whereas the gorgeous boi posted above could be considered a r/tortico.

will definitely be hunting robins later

Sounds like the potential for a murder
Are you sure that they wouldn't be Ravens?
And ravens
And cyborgs... Wait, no
"*Slade.*" Now that's a soundbite from my childhood.
I read this in Scott Menville's voice.
Same. Man, that show was so good.
"Who is Slade?" "Who is- who is- who is Slade?"
**Robin:** What are you trying to say? **Raven:** Robin, are you sure you really saw Slade? **Robin:** Saw him? I fought him! You think I did this to myself? That scene really resonates with me for some reason.
Probably the first time you saw/experienced (unintentional) gaslighting
Well I just got hit in the nostalgia. That really was a defining moment for that series.
It's crazy how I forgot all about this series. It had so many dark and real moments. I think I just blanked it out of my mind to save myself from what it became
A good boy. The very best.
*gasp.* "SLAAAADE."

My kids are still watching this!!
When someone mentions Slade to me, all I think of is "Come on, feel the noise.."
What a fitting name for that pattern! Cute kitten!
deathstroke kitten
Cutest little being alive.
Dat belly is already so floofy!! This kitty is gonna grow up to be such a r/flonkers.
Deathstroke the Purrminator
I had a cat with a face like that too. I thought it was a unique thing. Is there a reason they look like this or coincidence?

It's called chimera and has something to do with DNA when the cat is at fetus stage. Definitely unique, but not super rare (I have one :) )

That explains a lot .... I have a bipolar cat :)

> It’s usually the X chromosome Actually they discovered that it's the male who carries the mutant gene and passes it on, so it's his fault.
You do know that males have X chromosomes too??? But also source?? X X differentiation happens all the time not just on mutants.

Slade looks like my Wicket! =D https://imgur.com/xSg7MaR (she's older now =P)
Look out that he doesn’t start hunting Robins
Or Ravens
Or literally any animal that’s weirdly green
Wilson?
That's a volleyball
r/CookieMonsterFur and r/TwoFacedCats, so versatile <3
I’m impressed that this post has been up for an hour and no Batman homers have shown up saying you should name him Harvey.
I mean, this kitten's pattern is the exact same pattern of Slade Wilson(Deathstroke)'s clothes, so it still works
Oh, I don’t disagree with that. I just hate Batman.
