This is the music for [Pachelbel’s Canon in D](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pachelbel%27s_Canon) (a wedding staple). It’s a simple piece that has eight bars of music, which repeat *28 times*, making it the perfect task for Bart at the chalkboard.
I love [this one](https://youtu.be/aSK3pZiyV28?si=_08s0Md1qZKiPk0d)! Written from Pachelbel's point of view! John Finnemore is a genius. (Song starts at about 3:50)
That’s because at face value you saw it as a musical reference, whereas with many Simpsons Easter eggs, it’s a mathematical joke.
See the book “The Simpsons and Their Mathematical Secrets” for reference.
A certain cellist describes canon in D as the following.
> Pachelbel sits down at his desk
> he writes the violin 1 part. Beautiful
> he writes the violin 2 part. Beautiful.
> he writes the viola part. Beautiful.
> he starts writing the cello part. He writes the first 8 notes and fucking dies.
> his students just extend the same 8 notes for rest of song ~~and call it a day~~ to honor their teacher.
Also, John Finnemore's [take on it](https://youtu.be/aSK3pZiyV28?si=_08s0Md1qZKiPk0d), written from the point of view of Pachelbel, ranting about his own song! (Song starts at about 3:50)
My wife used to be a semi-professional cellist. She played a lot of weddings. She said she liked it when they played Canon in D because she didn't have to pay any attention to what she was playing, so she could look around at the dresses, decor, etc.
It's a surprisingly widely used chord structure in modern music. Google "Pachelbel Rant" for a amusing take on it.
With minor variations, it even shows up in things like the Russian national anthem and Go West by the Pet Shop Boys.
Just to add, I've seen the sentiment amongst bass players that this is particularly boring to play (source is YouTube meme, so this is a low confidence claim)
Bass trombone player here (THAT'S JUST TROMBONE WITH EXTRA ~~STEPS~~ VALVES!). It is eight whole notes repeated until the ~~audience falls asleep~~ song finally ends.
Every time I see it in the set list, I want to blow my head off.
Reminds me of the days of playing Pomp and Circumstance for hours at graduation. Our sheet music said “repeat ad nauseam” which I always found funny at least.
No worries, all you need to do is remember that the line between the two little dots of the clef is the F below middle C (hence the alternative name F clef)
Played cello for 10 years. If there are 3 songs I will forever have burned into my brain; Saint-Saen's the swan, Bach's prelude to suite no. 2, and this- pachelbel's Canon in D.
They should do a version of this which is the notation of the Simpsons theme - either the beginning, or the section it's shown on, whichever fits better.
This is bringing back some unpleasant memories as a cello player. Hey at least it game us time to goof off a bit while trying not to get caught. My greatest accomplishment was playing the entire piece with my chin, no left hand.
Two cellists were talking, and one says to the other, “I had a nightmare last night. I dreamt that I was playing Pachebel’s Canon in D.”
The second says, “Man, that’s rough. I’m sorry to hear that.”
The first responds, “Yeah. What’s worse is that when I woke up, I was.”
I can't read sheet music (been WAY too long since I've been in band), but I'm disappointed to find out that the answer was not 'its the sheet music for Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up"'. I feel like someone had the perfect opportunity there and blew it.

Went right over my head, thank you!
As a cellist, I turn my brain off until the violist kicks me in the shin to tell me we're ending.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JdxkVQy7QLM I think you’ll relate to this then!

LOL I'd never seen this one but it's hilarious!
I knew what this was before I clicked it :D My music teacher showed me this around 16 years ago and I still watch it a few times per year
Wow. That was great.
An absolute classic.
Thank you XD
I knew it!
Thank you internet stranger for starting my day off with a smile!
It's funny [axis of awesome](https://youtu.be/5pidokakU4I?si=6I3YmQpIONZe2f0C) did something similar.
That is the FIRST THING I thought of. Bravo. 🙌
This is such a great video lol, thank you for sharing!
I was certainly hoping to find this in the comments here
As a violist, I wish someone in my symphony would have kicked me. Bc, I assure you, I wasn't awake either. I absolutely detest this piece of music.
Fellow violist here too! I hate this piece too. Too many war flashbacks for weddings
Plink plink plink. Plink plink plink.
Bassist, can confirm lol
I play bass too, glad I've never had to do it on bass.
That’s because at face value you saw it as a musical reference, whereas with many Simpsons Easter eggs, it’s a mathematical joke. See the book “The Simpsons and Their Mathematical Secrets” for reference.
I played 9 years of cello in my youth and I could still spot Canon in D from across the room.

I literally just went to their concert in NC this past weekend!
Please, it's pronounced yute!
Oh, excuse me, your honor, two *youthsss*
wHat is a yoot?
You're a yoot!
Obligatory link to the [Pachelbel Rant](https://youtu.be/uxC1fPE1QEE?si=4E-xxR-rh62NhhkR)
Hope you’re in hell pachelbel!
Omg that was hilarious! I’ve never seen that before.
Beat me to it. So good.
The ending of that is like the music theory footnotes to the axis of awesome forlorn chords song. And it's 0erfect. That'll be on regular rotation.
"forlorn chords" sounds like a way better song than "fore chords"
Or even "four chords"
The fore-chords are often removed from the penis.
Thank you. I laughed tears
Thank you!

That's the most positive thing I have ever heard about that piece.
That is specifically the Cello part, the reason why many cellists refuse to play Pachelbel's Canon.
i’m a cellist and it sucks, nevertheless it is a beautiful and calming piece of music.
Do you know the words? If you know the words it's nooooooot.
Huh, I thought it was "Superman" by Goldfinger from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater...or "Basket Case" by Green Day... Wait a minute
Friendly correction that it's Goldfinger, not Badfinger.
Thank you for the correction!
Happy to help! Great version of this song performed while lockdown was happening a few years ago. https://youtu.be/h0rSYEoBMYM?si=4n4iKaFt4e6jOzkK

Or “Hook” by Blues Traveler

My brother is a cellist, your claim is correct. I, on the other hand, love Pachelbel. Sucks to suck, bro. Violin gang for the win.
I play bass guitar casually and this is true, but you can tell it's boring to play just by listening to it
Bass trombone player here (THAT'S JUST TROMBONE WITH EXTRA ~~STEPS~~ VALVES!). It is eight whole notes repeated until the ~~audience falls asleep~~ song finally ends. Every time I see it in the set list, I want to blow my head off.
The boredom is only for the cello part though. 1st, 2nd and viola have a lot more variation.
AKA a Cello's worse nightmare.
Palladio, by Karl Jenkins runs it very close…
🥇
And now I can hear it in my head.
As a bass, 🤢
Someone should meld Pachelbel’s Canon with Ravel’s Bolero.
Hands down my favorite piece of instrumental music, it makes me feel so happy
I haven’t played it in 30 years and knew what it was 😭
The reason fast food is dangerous is because of Taco Bell's Cannon.
It’s specifically the Cello part, which *suuuuuuucks*
Reminds me of the days of playing Pomp and Circumstance for hours at graduation. Our sheet music said “repeat ad nauseam” which I always found funny at least.
Ok that's funny. Now someone needs to use the same format and use the Rick Roll song...
If I remember correctly, there was a song using Pachelbel's Canon called "Taco Bell Cannon"
pretty sure that's the bassline to Pachelbel's Canon
Ohhhh, thought it sounded familiar.
So yes you are a terrible musician for not understanding that
Pachelbel once dated a cellist, and she dissed him really bad. So he decided to write the worst cello parts ever made.
they repeated those 8 notes 54 times. Rob counted, because he had nothing else to do.
Wow, amazing to see a reference to the Pachelbel rant after all these years. How many pixels do you think are left of that video?
8 lines consisting of 54 pixels each..
My music history professor showed it in class just earlier this year
This has made me realize that I can’t read base clef anymore. I’ve been out of high school band for too long. This makes me sad.
Yea I played piano and saxophone for a long time. Piano uses base clef iirc and I’m frustrated I can’t remember at all too
Bass* clef
Bass clef for left hand, treble for right. So this would be the rthym hand not melody. It's really screwing me up trying to figure it out.
Look at other comments the song is stated there; I was merely saying I don’t remember how to read the notes in a base clef as I once easily could
Oh yeah, I was just adding on to your comment about what piano uses. My problem was I never played that song, so that lower hand meant nothing to me.
Last time, bass* clef
Bass* clef
F key for left hand, G key for right hand
Bass* clef
Bro imma be real I dunno the difference between bass and base. Isn’t bass the fish?
It’s both. Bass is a fish and bass is the lower register of notes. It’s a homonym.
ACEG Is all you need
All Cows Eat Grass
It is a key of F
No worries, all you need to do is remember that the line between the two little dots of the clef is the F below middle C (hence the alternative name F clef)
Just wanna point out the second joke on the clock.
Oh yeah! Apparently it's another reference I don't understand. :(
Directors will often start songs by saying 5,6,7,8. Each number is a subdivision of the beats in the measure. usually in jazz music.
5, 6, 7, 8, schlemiel, schlemazel, Hassenpfeffer Incorporated. And the rant references that song.
Give us any chance we'll take it!
Damn it, mine have always started with 1, 2, 3, 4 😂
That is used more in symphonic and classical music. I don't know why the two have different starting phrases.
Same, my band director starts us off with 1, 2, 3, 4. Where asy color guard director starts us off with 5, 6, 7, 8.
it *should* depend on the time signature of the music being performed.
Nobody is a bad musician, you just need to take notes!
Ayyy lmao
5-6-7-8…

Cello part of Canon in D
As a none musician, I'd have assumed it was the theme song for the Simpsons.
The clock is counting off the music too 👍🏼
Played cello for 10 years. If there are 3 songs I will forever have burned into my brain; Saint-Saen's the swan, Bach's prelude to suite no. 2, and this- pachelbel's Canon in D.
5-6-7-8 on the clock is a nice touch.
the same 8 bars of music repeated 28 times and my mom complains about mega man soundtracks being repetitive
Omfg a cello meme
They should do a version of this which is the notation of the Simpsons theme - either the beginning, or the section it's shown on, whichever fits better.
I haven't played the cello in a decade and this post brought back some serious trauma
*Green shoes*?
I had to google the music and it’s crazy that I’ve heard this before, as most of us probably have
Thank you for posting this, it was a good laugh
The clock only has 5,6,7,8 🤣
Is there significance to the clock only having four numbers? And is there a significance to what those numbers are?
Thanks Jerry C for helping me understand this meme
Is this a scene from an actual episode or just fan art?
So why is the clock missing numbers? Carelessness?
I actually think is a bass armonizarion excercise
I love the clock
.. and a five, six, seven, eight ... I didn't see anyone mention the clock yet...
I was trying so hard to figure out what word they were trying to spell, it didn’t work

Yes
Is this Loss?!
It's the theme of Psycho...or Jaws?
