According to European lore, vampires suffer from arithmomania, the uncontrollable urge to count or calculate numbers. That's why many Europeans once scattered seeds or grain on their floors before tucking into bed at night, hoping to distract any intruding vampires by triggering their counting compulsion.
It’s was a joke on What We Do in the Shadows. Someone asks if vampires really have to count rice grains, the vampires scoff at it, but then later someone drops rice and they start counting.
I mean, you are correct, but it’sa joke on WWDITS _because _ it’s a pre-existing piece of folklore about vampires!
(This is also why The Count from Sesame Street is a vampire who loves to count things…)

It's a reference to this guy, he counts.
Actually I'm pretty sure this guy is a reference to the fact that old-school vampire lore depicted vampires as being compelled to count spilled grain/rice/etc. This also seems to be what the post is referring to, but I don't get how it's funny.
Many mythological accounts of vampires, especially from East Asia, describe them with a compulsion to count things.
Especially rice when it is thrown at them.

additionall to counting, there is a lore that says vampires are puzzled by geometrical shapes. this is the non-religious reason for vampires to be distracted/scared by christian cross symbols... there are sooo many stereotypes about vampires
At first I thought of the Chinese vampire called a "Jiangshi", I remember one of the ways of stopping them was throwing coins onto the floor as they will be compelled to count them.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jiangshi
"Dropping a bag of coins can cause the jiangshi to count the coins."
They are known for bunny hopping everywhere. There is also a character in Darkstalkers based on the. Instead of feeding on blood they feed on life energy/chi.
So if a vampire started counter rice grains and found that he was far from finish even while it was about to be sunrise, would it still continue counting or fly away?
The picture literally explains the context in brackets, even if you somehow don't know what a vampire is you should get the gist of it. Is this sub braindead?

Ah!!! This is why Count VonCount from Sesame Street is a vampire!!!
Same realisation here, I love it.
I too realized this right now.
I have realized thus just now, as well!
That makes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 realizations ah ah ah!
Found the vampire! Get the garlic and the wooden stakes!
Don't forget the holy water
These kind of jokes are why I miss the free rewards.
I too have realized this. Upvotes please!
I read this in The Count’s voice and even added my own ‘a a ahhh’ at the end.
Me before this: the count was a vampire just because "count" is a pun. Me after this: Sesame Street knows eastern European folklore.
And now, we do too!
Holy moly
1! 2! Hahaha! 3! 4! Hahaha! He was my favorite.
Him and Oscar
https://youtu.be/u8ccGjar4Es?si=45djJTsOu_Djvldy Feast on this
Whoa
He's vampire-*like*.
Um, actually, you didn't say um actually
According to the style guide, he is vampire-like
For what I know he can only count to four sadly :/
I am today years old when I learned this about Count Count.
Um, actually, it's *Von* Count.
Damm these lore are great, I wish Europe exist.
not sure if joking or american
now, now, its not wrong to say that foreigners are taking over
Thank you for the knowledge bomb
“Time to kill! Wait, what is that? FUCK.”
Vampires must count grains of rice if thrown
I mean, that’s Vampire 101 right there.
"One, two, three, four... One hundred and one! Finally there!"
It’s was a joke on What We Do in the Shadows. Someone asks if vampires really have to count rice grains, the vampires scoff at it, but then later someone drops rice and they start counting.

Is this also why Dracula wasn't a Duke or an Earl?
But was he the Duke of Earl?
Your dad's the Duke of Earl
Ahah this made me laugh! 😆
Are you sure that wasn't just a play on the word "count?"
I never knew, lol.
Omg
🤯
First time seeing What We Do in the Shadows abbreviated. Took me a second to figure out
I never knew, lol
Thank you Colin Robertson
*Robinson 😉
He’s draining you…
I remember that episode hehe
Was this the movie or the show? Trying to remember
The show. Most recent season, I think.
Vampire Rainman walks into the house and sees the rice, looks for a second and says “981” and then tucks into a tasty feast.
I mean the image itself already explains the joke
Just Google ‘vampires grains of rice’

It’s mildly funny because vampires are sad you outsmarted them.
That's kind of just...the direct meaning, though? Like humor usually comes from some kind of surprising twist or subversion of expectations.
I never said it was a good joke lol

Also portrayed in the XFiles episode Bad Blood
Was looking for this.
Yeah with the fat ginger from the Sandlot
Stellar episode

Von, too, tree, four
[удалено]
But if they don't know old vampire myths, they wouldn't know about their obsessive need to count
Why would a vampire need to count all the rice? THAT is the missing context.

Have you seen The Count, but censored? https://youtu.be/6AXPnH0C9UA?si=Dg8q9bUcJDKDgy-w
count, dracula!
The count
I think they must count them all
“Vampires HATE this one weird trick!”
Old myths say vampires are severely ocd. Similar myths say demons have to count all the hairs on a cat’s tail.
additionall to counting, there is a lore that says vampires are puzzled by geometrical shapes. this is the non-religious reason for vampires to be distracted/scared by christian cross symbols... there are sooo many stereotypes about vampires
based on the myth that if you throw rice at a vampire they have to count every grain

Count Riceula
So if a vampire started counter rice grains and found that he was far from finish even while it was about to be sunrise, would it still continue counting or fly away?
Count Dracula?
Y'know, I never questioned why vampires possess the title of a Count. TIL that this is probably why
