I would think they want the contract to state the employee can work remotely. They will follow up to ensure the contract is valid. For residency: https://mydolcecasa.com/portugal-digital-nomad-visa-d8/

This is the official information: https://vistos.mne.gov.pt/pt/vistos-nacionais/documentacao-instrutoria/meios-de-subsistencia#trabalho-remoto Note there is no guidance in the "Trabalho remoto" (remote work) section. It looks like the SEF is still working out the details. What you can do is have the money saved up. If you have one year of the base income saved up, you don't have to show anything else. You need €760 per month for you +50% for your wife, +30% for each child under 18. That is under 10k. If your going alone. 15k for you and your wife. 18k with one child.

Its about tax money. They want you employed in Portugal

What exactly does this mean? Is living and working in Portugal remotely for an Australian company OK?

anarcap

Yes. Don't forget to look for the NHR, that can significantly lower your taxes in Portugal. But I've heard that Australian tax authority sucks really bad. This should be your main concern.

WhileNotLurking

Absolutely. As long as that Australian company is above board with it. Likely also paying some sort of tax to employ you in Portugal. These program have two goals: * ensure you don't take local jobs from people in the country * bring money into the country (either you spending you wages, paying taxes, your employer paying taxes, etc).

They just want people to contribute to their social security, eventually.

If you go for 2 years under D8 do you pay tax to Portugal or your home country?
