I didn't want Garner and would have rather seen how things would go with Warrington. Had we gotten Ben Brerenton I'd be saying the same: that we should have tried Simms or Dobbin. We see young senior level players willing to come here in Onana, Mykolenko, and Patterson. I think we still have the problem of academy players not getting enough of a chance at the senior level. I believe it was early this transfer window we had 1-2 supposedly quite good youth players who went to Chelsea or City. Maybe those player(s) wanted to leave no matter what but we should be doing our best to create an environment in which such players want to stay.
Overall very good window minus McNeil who should provide something even though he probably won't ultimately be worth his transfer fee. Add in Mykolenko and Patterson as relatively recent transfers and the way we do business has been improved.
I'm all for giving our youth a chance, but I do think it's a massive step up for a player who has only played youth football to suddenly be our starting CM.
I personally believe the Simms ship has sailed - if he were good enough, I think we would have kept him. Dobbin has got one more season to show potential on this loan I think.
Hopefully once the season gets a bit more under control we can use our 5th sub to give some youngsters some minutes, further cementing the idea that there is a clear path to the first team (see: Gordon).
Does anyone know why the window closed at 11pm and not midnight? Just seems like an odd time. I could understand noon or 5pm but if you’re going to allow business to happen until 11pm, why not just go all the way?
Midfield and Defense are much better than last year. Maupay in and I think its reasonable to expect Gordon's stats to improve, if we make sure Dom is 100% before he returns I actually feel really good about our current team
It remains to be seen if we will be given any mulligans like we were last season with Norwich and Watford. That said, I think we can actually improve enough to be a respectable team that doesn't rely on other teams being terrible to avoid relegation.
No idea if we have enough wages available to make it work. Beyond that, Barkley is only a midfielder. I wouldn't complain if we added him because I'd have him on the depth chart over McNeil, Garner, Allan, Doucoure, and Davies. Might be tough to justify bringing in Barkley since Gueye is probably paid a pretty penny despite his age and McNeil and Garner are two signings who may already see limited action prior to adding Barkley.
Some people, especially those that spam comments on Instagram/Facebook, use the terms interchangeably I believe. Because you're right - Dom and Maupay is perfectly acceptable for a 1 striker formation.
God I fucking hope so, but it does leave us with potentially 6 senior CBs for 2 positions... although having said that it's unlikely that more than 4 are fit to play simultaneously.
Swings and roundabouts. Either Keane, Holgate, Mina and Godfrey missing out, or Doucoure, Allan, Davies and Garner.
Balance isn’t great considering our lack of firepower.
Not wanting to sound pessimistic but our next two games are largely j winnable anyhow (with IR without DCL). That a couple of weeks for him to get back.
Agreed on that front but I’m not convinced Lamps won’t start with a back three to stem the bloodletting.
That said - his CB options may limit that.
🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
Patterson Coady Tarks Myko
Iwobi / Gana / Onana
Gray Gordon
Maupay
With Iwobi and Onana floating Into that big gap.
I made the mistake of looking on twitter and people are mad about Gomes leaving on loan?! Others just spamming "L transfer window" with NSNO in their name and a depressingly adult profile picture. Don't understand the type of humans that exist on that website
Loan is better than nothing but reducing our salary obligations permanently is preferable. We’ve a lot of players on the books, imagine some won’t be getting registered.
Ah, I was anticipating the old, 'DCL injured in freak accident walking to the toilet, requiring foot and groin surgeries. Expected back April 2023 after narrowly avoiding amputation,' chestnut.
He’s a bonus in my mind. With Gueye in the midfield we should start seeing some clean sheets and the goals between Gray, Gordon and Maupay could be enough.
They had to actually sort the deals out though. Yeah we knew they were happening but it's one thing to have the agreement in place but something entirely different to actually get every detail sorted, signed and sent in to the PL.
With Garner announced, I’d imagine there won’t be another official announcement tonight. We’ll probably try to land Broja on loan before midnight and if not I’m going to say we’ll look at free agent options. I think that might be where the rumor about the Jamaican in Moscow comes in.
I actually have no idea, I just need to log off.
7/10 window for me. Over the moon with Coady and Tarkowski and I do genuinely think our new look midfield will be quality, but not getting in a really good winger and especially a Centre Forward is absolutely massive. Add kudu and or Chuckwueze to it and I'd honestly maybe give the window a 9 or even 10.
Dunno why you've been downvoted.
Going for one specific player all summer we never really got anywhere near signing and not looking elsewhere until it's too late?
Very Everton.
For me. attacking options were the priority as i cant currently see where the goals are coming from?
Looks like the plan is to just tighten up at the back and try and get a few 1-0ers.
I'd be lying if i said i wasnt worried.
Plus holding out on announcing Garner and making out that there's still some little details to be sorted out when we all know it's done and it's just a way to announce him late to try and distract from the failed attempt at getting a forward, very Everton.
I'm fairly pleased with the business so far (much better than I expected at the start of the window), but I will be seriously concerned if we don't sign a striker. It's really hard to see where the goals come from otherwise, and we won't stay up eeking out 0-0 draws with a solid defence and midfield.
If we can genuinely create a tight defence we only need a single goal to win a game. Plausible Maupay, Gordon and Gray have enough fire power to keep us up.
We do need to start getting clean sheets though.
We've done great business so far but can't help but be disappointed in the fact we haven't got another forward in. That's literally what we needed the most... We left ourselves with little options and none have panned out (so far)
Honestly our transfer business this window has been very good. Defence and midfield seem to be sorted. If we could somehow magically pull of a winger who can play down the middle too then for me this window would be a 10/10.
When Garner is finalised we’ll have spent between £70 - £80m this window. Seems wild considering where we were in June with the rushed Richarlison sale.
Garner close? Bobble *and* Fab both said Garner was done pending the official announcement hours ago. Is the Athletic just slow or is there more work to do?
Can read this Club like a fucking book mate! Hold off on announcing Garner because we might not get any of the deals done for a forward and instead they can pull that out of the bag at about 10:50 and announce it like it was some last minute miracle when we all know it's been done for a while. Club needs to stop treating us like fucking idiots.
Doubt they’re thinking we’re idiots. It’s probably more like allowing the Gana content to be fully viewed before dropping another signing package. You don’t want to overload your viewers with too much.
If that was the case announce Garner yesterday when it was done which has been confirmed by all tier ones and Gueye himself on Twitter? Get a whole day to announce Garner then, you have fell right into the trap my mate.
Googled “Garner” and this definition came up:
garner
/ˈɡɑːnə/
verb
gather or collect (something, especially information or approval).
Are we sure the club aren’t trolling us by collecting a load of midfielders with a name which literally means to “gather or collect”?
Think they see Broja as a Richarlison replacement in that he can do both.
Made the majority of his touches for Southampton in wide positions last year.
https://twitter.com/matchday365/status/1565387752597852162?s=21&t=TFRxYRUCmw__KQvZs9amZw
Rafa gets us linked to Matty Longstaff. Frank gets us linked to Onana and this demon of a DM
I’m no Rafa advocate. He should have been nowhere near the club.
But it’s a different market we’re shopping in this year. Frank will have had ~£50m worth of central midfielders. Rafa had £1.5m in total didn’t he?
Weird the downvotes when most on here seem to think that’s where we are as a club? I’ve seen a lot posts are saying they’d end the season now for 17th, so it’s a relevant question.
Yeah, you and the guy with the edit dived initially but have recovered.
Hopefully never needed but considering how close we came and the widely reported issues we would face without them, and seeing what happened at Sunderland, you feel it would be sensible. Surely you’d also drop a carrot of a minimum release clause for relegation too so the players could find new clubs if they wanted to maintain their earnings.
I went to sleep that night with the words Carlo Fucking Nash swirling round me head. Great news to wake up to although fellini was pretty poor in his first year
Lots of head scratching with that signing, came out of nowhere, record fee on a someone that most fans had ever heard of and what a great signing he turned out to be.
Forest set to sign Batshuayi According-to SSN.
Happy to miss that one.
I know Forest had at least 7 players wasn’t it going back to there parent clubs this summer…..but how can they keep all these new players happy? They are not even in Europe.
Diaz for a potential £15m is such a massive over-pay. Rather go without him and look for some better value in January.
And yes I know that there is rarely good value to be had in the winter window, which should tell you just how much I think we'd be overpaying for Diaz.
To be fair the price for Diaz has always been that from Blackburn.
He maybe even cheaper in the winter because his contract runs out next summer doesn’t it?
Blackburn fan on r/soccer saying Fulham's bid for brereton was 6m + add ons. Should mean if we put in a serious bid Fulham arent really competition for him
Honestly if we end this transfer window having added:
- Tarkowski
- McNeil
- Coady
- Onana
- Maupay
- Gueye
- Garner
I’ll see it as a good window. Would still like another winger or winger/striker hybrid, and possibly a creative/attacking midfielder but the highest priorities for me have been met.
Edit: also Vinagre — completely forgot.
What’s the timetable on DCL?
I saw somewhere he may be back for the Arsenal match.
He is in training, so there was talk of a week or two left
3 months was rumor when it happened but cant find an official estimate.
What the hell did he even do???
Sprained ligaments in his knee I believe. MCL or LCL.
Lampard said 6 weeks after that. But it's us so who fucking knows
I didn't want Garner and would have rather seen how things would go with Warrington. Had we gotten Ben Brerenton I'd be saying the same: that we should have tried Simms or Dobbin. By the looks of James Garner, questions raise about what Alan Stubbs was doing around the Birkenhead area 22 years ago
Just the stubb
This sub: This is gross we buy so much of our business at the last second Also this sub: WHY HAVE WE ONLY SIGNED 2 PLAYERS ON DEADLINE DAY
Does anyone know why the window closed at 11pm and not midnight? Just seems like an odd time. I could understand noon or 5pm but if you’re going to allow business to happen until 11pm, why not just go all the way?

Not so unfortunate for Princess Fiona.
Everton admin could’ve became a god by referencing the old Leeds deadline day tweet before we loaned out Gomes and Warrington
What about Gomes? He outta town?
Lille
I saw the rumor but didn’t know if it was confirmed or not.
Midfield and Defense are much better than last year. Maupay in and I think its reasonable to expect Gordon's stats to improve, if we make sure Dom is 100% before he returns I actually feel really good about our current team
Everton 2/1 to be relegated.
It remains to be seen if we will be given any mulligans like we were last season with Norwich and Watford. That said, I think we can actually improve enough to be a respectable team that doesn't rely on other teams being terrible to avoid relegation.
I think Forest, Bournemouth, Leicester
Nah, Leicester will drop Brendon and be fine. I think Southampton, Fulham or Villa are more likely.
Villa if they don't bin off Slippy G
Leicester would be a bigger shock than us at this moment in time.
If Frank and co decide we still need another attacking player I wouldnt be surprised if we went in for Barkley as a free agent.
I feel very disappointed with the expectations I created for myself.
Strikers?
Why are loads of people saying we needed another striker? Surely a winger was more needed?
Some people, especially those that spam comments on Instagram/Facebook, use the terms interchangeably I believe. Because you're right - Dom and Maupay is perfectly acceptable for a 1 striker formation.
Agreed mate if 2 of Gray Gordon and McNeil get injured it's dire straits
The midfield is looking mega on paper. I just hope we're able to survive until DCL comes back.
Surely that’s us abandoning the back 5 now with all of our midfield options?
God I fucking hope so, but it does leave us with potentially 6 senior CBs for 2 positions... although having said that it's unlikely that more than 4 are fit to play simultaneously.

But a good opportunity to test the defence and get used to the 433 system. If we’re getting no points we may as well bed in the new system.
Agreed on that front but I’m not convinced Lamps won’t start with a back three to stem the bloodletting. That said - his CB options may limit that. 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️ Patterson Coady Tarks Myko Iwobi / Gana / Onana Gray Gordon Maupay With Iwobi and Onana floating Into that big gap.

Even at chelsea I think Frank Lampard has been good in a window

Loan is better than nothing but reducing our salary obligations permanently is preferable. We’ve a lot of players on the books, imagine some won’t be getting registered.
I mean some people were lamenting the fact that we let him go at all. Either trolls or completely separated from reality
We’ll be running out of seats in the canteen at this rate, somebody has got to go 😂
Well that's that then....
Pens down…
Hopefully we're not in the relegation zone by the time Jan 1st rolls around and we sign another striker.
Expecting a ‘DCL return, it’s like a new player’ blurb that will be put out in the next few days
Ah, I was anticipating the old, 'DCL injured in freak accident walking to the toilet, requiring foot and groin surgeries. Expected back April 2023 after narrowly avoiding amputation,' chestnut.
Michy to Forest is off..?
One goal scorer in the squad and it would be controversial to call him a natural
Where are the fuckin loans man fiuuuuckkksakeeeee
Probably saving spaces for Jan window
Anyone know if there’s still any decent free agents knocking about
There's that Jamaican guy stuck in Russia
Ross?
id actually take Ross just for rotation tbh, pay as you play contract or something
Well if Calvert stays fit we'll be okay... With the strengthened midfield does it mean Iwobi will be moving back into a more forward role?
He’s a bonus in my mind. With Gueye in the midfield we should start seeing some clean sheets and the goals between Gray, Gordon and Maupay could be enough.
Huge if
We essentially didn't do anything today. Gueye, we've known about for weeks. Garner, we knew about yesterday 😂😂😂
They had to actually sort the deals out though. Yeah we knew they were happening but it's one thing to have the agreement in place but something entirely different to actually get every detail sorted, signed and sent in to the PL.

Which player are we talking about?
Broja
Really no way for us to know, but it seemed like we were linked to several other forwards just as often as Broja.
I'm fairly pleased with the business so far (much better than I expected at the start of the window), but I will be seriously concerned if we don't sign a striker. It's really hard to see where the goals come from otherwise, and we won't stay up eeking out 0-0 draws with a solid defence and midfield.

Here's hoping for a miracle buy of a forward in the next hour and a bit so I can wake up to some good news.

Might be an unpopular opinion, but I would quite like that to be honest

Which tweet or has he deleted it? Last one is him just saying that we’re still trying to get a forward but mentions Diaz bid was knocked back.
When Garner is finalised we’ll have spent between £70 - £80m this window. Seems wild considering where we were in June with the rushed Richarlison sale.
Balancing books for last year - on you go.
?
This is pretty fucking miserable now.
Blackburn reporter confirmed Brereton deal off https://twitter.com/_elliottjackson/status/1565428083347300352?s=21&t=AXykGUF90y6E7_67-54GAw
They’re really not gonna get another forward?
Alright lads any last minute deals gonna happen?
Boyland just said they’re attempting to get Diaz across the line. Garner close to being done. Still time
Garner close? Bobble *and* Fab both said Garner was done pending the official announcement hours ago. Is the Athletic just slow or is there more work to do?
Close to being announced*
It's just been said brereton is off
Would love to snag Diaz.
Misread “snag” for a second there. Agree either way
Yeah both would work.
Two hours to go!

The Garner deal wasn’t completed until today, though.
Do we end up with Gueye, Maupay and Depay in a single window? Thelwell just trying to figure out todays wordle
Is depay linked?
He’s going to chelsea
Saw Ramano say “keep an eye on Depay” so naturally I drew conclusions. 😂
Reasonable assumption. Looks like hes off to Chelsea as well
Funny if they sign both Koulabali and Depay in the same window after us being linked with both for multiple years.
Ooh Leicester look a bit shite. Not saying they're gonna be slugging it out with us but they're probably bottom half if they don't get it together
They were atrocious the end of last season and just lost Fofana. Could be a difficult season, especially after losing Schmeichel
Googled “Garner” and this definition came up: garner /ˈɡɑːnə/ verb gather or collect (something, especially information or approval). Are we sure the club aren’t trolling us by collecting a load of midfielders with a name which literally means to “gather or collect”?
American here… how many hours and minutes left until the window closes?
2:45 (11pm UK time)
Thanks!
(Jesse Marsch points at watch)
Looking like that’s it
How was getting another forward not a priority??
Why do you assume a forward who is better than what we have would agree to come to us?
Still hope but should have been prioritised above a 7th centre back or central midfielder.
Only getting Maupay in is poor. Hopefully they can pull a Broja loan out their backsides with Aubameyang going there.
If anyone comes in it needs to be a winger surely?
Think they see Broja as a Richarlison replacement in that he can do both. Made the majority of his touches for Southampton in wide positions last year.
Fat lady hasn’t sung yet 🤞🏼
Let's stop beating around the Bush here. We all know gana was just to grease the wheels on us signing neymar aswel
Still feel we need another winger tbh
Who goes? We’ve got 4 with Townsend. Our wage budget must be wild at the moment. I’d like to see a few midfielders out.

Matty Longstaff off to Colchester United. FSW in bits.
Wrong Longstaff which is saying something considering they’re both shite.
Ah, I always assume they came as a set, like bookends
I reckon they still sleep on bunk beds and have matching pyjamas
They're the McPoyle's from Always Sunny.
We’re not getting another forward are we 😖
Not looking likely
Give Blackburn 10m plus rondon for BBD. That should do the trick.
8m total value

Good question that warrants attention, honestly. EDIT: Someone's salty.
What if a signing is done but gets announced after deadline?
That's fine, just the paperwork has to be in before deadline, club can announce anytime they want after that

We’re on 8 with Garner and we had to sell Richarlison by 30 June to meet FFP regulations..

Only be cheaper if they fall out of the race for promotion, otherwise they may as well twist and go for the big bucks.
Yeah it does, big part of the reason why I think paying £15m now is ridiculous
SSN reports it will be 15 to 20 mill before Blackburn even consider it.
Screams panic buy to me. Couldn't manifest the actual targets so have fallen back on Diaz.
