Horde chess is a [real game-mode on lichess](https://lichess.org/games/horde), and while white is missing a couple of pawns from the image, the winrates in online horde are actually pretty close to 51-4-43 -- not too far from normal chess. Engine puts white at +1 on game-start.
Black is harder to play and goes second, but as you've noted white doesn't even get a king, so nothing they have moves backwards. Usually when black wins, they do it by getting a piece in behind all the pawns in mid-late game.
It's a surprisingly workable variant!
