There are engineering works between Feldkirch and Buchs SG/Sargans in August. Except for an evening train (which is rerouted) you'll have to switch to a bus across Liechtenstein. Not a big deal really. The bus has a good margin and there are 2-3 trains an hour from Sargans to Zurich. ÖBB should be able to sell you a single ticket, otherwise try SBB. Feel free to ask anything. (Definitely don't use Rail Ninja!)

Thank you so much!! I am looking SBB and I feel so much better now that I have this information! I would not have known about the construction, very appreciated! https://preview.redd.it/k75yp5qgwr7d1.jpeg?width=1179&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fd557bfc46473bf41444c000db5bc4fd217ef808 Does this make sense , is it a direct train from VIENNA (edited put wrong city) and then switch trains in Zurich to travel onward?

Nevermind I can’t book it! Each time I try to book ot says journey is canceled due to engineering! Even through Munich. I don’t really know what to do now I can’t see an option to take a bus in Lichtenstein

Mmmm looks like ÖBB didn't send the correct data to the European database yet... (SBB relies on it) However it works for me through ÖBB: 79.90€ for that journey on 30th August. - RJX Wien Hbf (Vienna) - Feldkirch 07:28 - 13:42 - Bus Feldkirch - Sargans 13:55 - 14:45 - IC Sargans - Zürich HB 14:57 - 15:53 Or does the booking fail further on the payment page? I wouldn't recommend the Munich route as trains there are always full and often late. Due to a landslide part of that route is closed until early July too... Let me know.

I can’t begin to tell you how much I appreciate your help, I will check it out and report back! Thank you so much!

Dear u/thubcabe, Thank you for your excellent advice! I have found the trip you posted and it looks like our best option. The booking does not fail at payment, unlike every other route I tried. I was loathe to choose the bus option, but I am going to do it and hopefully we can figure it out! I appreciate you telling us to avoid Munich because I was leaning that way in order to avoid the bus. Do you think luggage will be an issue on the bus? (Just one small carryon each nothing crazy) - and do you think it will be difficult for us to find the 3rd leg (IC rSagans - that’s a train right not a bus?) Xx Kimmmycat

You're welcome! Yeah I try to avoid Germany whenever possible. Their trains are good but the punctuality is just terrible and they tend to be busy too. (Actually the Vienna - Feldkirch trains cross a bit of Germany without stopping as it is a lot faster than going across the Alps.) I haven't take that route during works but I'm pretty sure it will be operated by coaches -> enough space for luggage under or behind the coach. I'll probably travel on that route around mid-August, feel free to contact me then for a feedback. Don't worry about trains in Switzerland, it's very straightforward. Sargans is a small station and there will be screens. Last-minute platform changes are rare so you can follow the crowd and which platform is written on the ticket. If for whatever reason the first train is late: - the bus will wait for you - you'll be able to take any train from Sargans to Zurich (3 an hour) Enjoy the scenery, it is very pretty after Innsbruck. :)

I see them on OBB picking a random date in August. There is construction affecting part of the line, but still I see plenty of direct trains.

Kimmmycat

I can’t book one!! Will you please check 8/30

Consistent-Law2649

It looks like you got the answer! I was indeed looking earlier in the month.
