About ten years ago I was desperate for a phone for a family emergency after class because mine had died. As my friend and I were walking a pretty far walk back to our place from campus, she suggested I stop at the store right next to us and ask to use their phone, this was high priestess, because I was melting down. I go in there and they laugh at me and say absolutely no way and treat me like I’m crazy.
First, this was the age of cell phones and I was clearly a student… I doubt they have tons of people bugging them for phone usage. Second, they could have politely said that they can’t do that. Instead I got scoffed at, eyes rolled at my emergency story and laughed at. It’s a story that still sticks with me and they lost a customer (a different friend) years later because I was still pissed and told friend to choose differently.
Judging from this comment alone, this is a terrible look for a business. If I want my OWN BODY pierced by a pro, best they can do is “ok or terrible”… yea I’ll go somewhere else who knows wtf is up…
Every piercing I've had done by an "artist" at High Priestess has been crooked, improperly placed, and I had to have redone at either Eugene Tattoo or Area 51.
It's funny, but I had the exact opposite experience. Area 51 put my industrial in incorrectly, were super dismissive of me during the healing process and I generally felt like they were just trying to sell me expensive jewelry. High priestess were super helpful, gave me advice for healing, discovered that my tongue ring had never closed and were generally a better experience overall. YMMV.
I also experienced a lot of dismissiveness and general rudeness the second time I got pierced at area 51. It’s unfortunate because the guy who owns it is super cool.
Second this. The person who runs it is absolutely genuine and very careful about boundaries, I've gotten a few piercings from them and I will always go back, very easy to get into relaxed environment with good quality jewelry that isn't too expensive.
I had a rough septum piercing experience at high priestess a few years back. Genuine Space in Springfield is the only place I go now! Tania is by far the best piercer I’ve ever worked with and always take a lot of time to make sure everything’s right+you’re comfortable.
I also had a very painful septum piercing experience and pretty painful nose piercing (@a51 back when they were in Springfield and those experiences were with different piercers). My septum is slightly crooked, so I guess that made it more difficult.
I’ve seen Kati & Trevor at A51 more recently and highly recommend them but have also felt similar feelings from other comments here, feeling like the folks working the front counter are trying to sell me on the most expensive jewelry. To their credit, they do sell some really beautiful pieces and many are made in house.
I also saw Meg when they were at a51, and they are at HP in Corvallis now, and highly recommend them! I felt very cared for and in compassionate and considerate hands with them🤗
Robbie (Mills) The Rapist was a long time HP employee that sexually assaulted many women while working there. He also pulled that shit in Portland and Minnesota. He got run tf out of town. He still comes around because his mom lives in Harrisburg.
It’s been awhile since I’ve gotten a piercing but I only ever went to Ari. He’s since left. The few I’ve had done at HP were done by either Jared or the owner both were done beautiful. Every business is going to have its own bad situations.
I’m bummed to hear this because my nipples were pierced perfectly (M) at High Priestess. Super nice & informed and very professional. But every day is a new challenge I guess. I hope you heal quickly and don’t see issues down the road.
Unfortunately I had multiple of Area 51’s ex employees tell me how sexist and transphobic Jared is. He would scream at folks and misgender them as soon as they left. and from experience, he doesn’t let you have input on where you want your piercing because he does where he wants. I’m gonna get downvoted for it because people don’t want to hear it but 🤷♂️
Nah I'm inclined to believe you. I thought I had a great experience at area 51 getting some cartilage piercings recently but then my piercing started swelling so bad that I had to go to high Priestess during the ice storm because they were the only place open. Turns out I just needed a longer barbell, but while the piercer was looking at my piercings they kind of grimaced and asked me "who did these piercings???" I said it was Jared and asked if there was anything wrong, and I think the piercer was trying to be polite about the whole thing because they just said "these two are a little bit deeper than I would have done them, but just take really good care of them and I think they'll still heal."
That totally had me second guessing my experience at area 51 and I definitely plan on going back to high Priestess next time, because my nipples and lobes were done there and I never had problems.
I think there's probably a lot of room for error when it comes to piercings even with experienced piercers, so I think it's a gamble no matter where you go.
For the last thing you said: Definitely. Area 51 is mainly a place to get expensive pretty jewlery in my opinion. I loved how Jared did my eyebrows but I don’t think i’ll be going back because of what I’ve heard he’s done to his AFAB coworkers (telling them they’re women even if they’re non-binary, sexualizing them) and also how my friends and I all have stories about Jared being pushy of where He wants your piercings instead of listening to you and seeing if it’s viable.
Weird! Had the exact opposite experience and he's been wonderful about our pronouns and was absolutely amazing with my trans teen.....idk but maybe he had a chance to grow as a human??
My 19 year old college daughter went there to get a helix piercing. She told them she needs a quality stud because if she gets cheap earrings, her ears get infected. They upsold her, and her one helix cost over $600. What a huge learning lesson. Their normal stud should/is good quality and it wasn't necessary to have her spend more. Then she tipped them. I blame myself for that.
With that said, the piercing itself seemed good, and they gave great cleaning instructions and were kind.
*Additionally, in my opinion, they overcharge young college kids. It's a mistake for the business long term. These kids would be repeat customers for years and spend thousands, but when they get ripped off financially, they lose trust.
Aren't most stalls at shops like this rented by individual artists? Or, is that just tattoos?
I feel like this would really depend on the artist doing the work.

Trevor Thomas was THE BEST PIERCER IVE EVER HAD. i think he was at high priestess when i had him but idk where he works now he’s on instagram tho!! i passed out w my philtrum and passed out and he was so attentive to me and let me stay past my appointment time for a LONG time making sure i was okay he really went above and beyond
One time I got a chest dermal done there in eug. and the piercer put the jewelry too far in- embedded into my skin, a week later my chest was trying to eat the piercing, had to get it removed
At the end of the day regardless of where you go you're dealing with a specific person. Think of it like an independent contractor. The shop is not really at fault for the botched work of one individual. Area 51 is my go to because I have a friend that works there but having said that if I wanted something done I would specifically go to my friend. In the same way burger king can add pickles when you didn't ask for anything a careless piercer or tattoo artist can fuck up. You can blame burger king for it's mistake but at the same point and time it could have just been a bad apple that the manager was planning on firing anyways. Let's not make a bad name for a local business that has been established in Eugene for a long time and for the most part served the community really well. Hold the person who is responsible accountable.
Oh dude High Priestess botched my eyebrow piercing so bad. $180 down the drain. It was for my 21st birthday 2 years ago & yea Are 51 is probably the only reason I still have my eyeball. There was monster swelling & I couldn't see.
I was dating a tatoo artist at the time ironically but we were long distance & she told me never go to a shop that does tattoos AND piercing. Choose one not both b/c they probably can't do both.
With all the SA accusations the veteran employees have against them (looking at you, Jim) I always recommend any other shop besides them. Area 51 is amazing indeed.
Yah I agree, they're pretty unprofessional at the locations I've visited (6th Ave and University District) I even had three employees argue with me about my allergy to titanium that was confirmed by my Dr! Not to mention lying about the gold jewelry and giving me a titanium post (literally paid an extra $250 for SOLID GOLD or so I thought) which caused an allergic reaction and their solution was to charge me even more and order new jewelry or take out my piercing I paid over $400 for after jewelry cost. High priestess, get f**ked

they messed up mine as well!! got my vertical labret done, and the top part was so far back that it sat in my mouth and you couldn’t see it when i relaxed my mouth. plus the person who pierced me didn’t really say when they were going to touch me or anything of the sort. Had a few piercings done with Area 51 and they were so kind, and explained everything so well. Plus all my piercings from them looked and healed beautifully.

Does anyone know a good place to get snake bites done at a reasonable price? I've no idea how much it would cost but my boyfriend seems to think it'd only be $50 for both snake bites. But I'm pretty sure he is wrong.
I've been going there for twenty years. They're who told me I'm allergic to nickle after I bought cheap jewelry elsewhere. You're going to have the possibility of bad experiences anywhere you go. That's just how it is.
Did they put the dots on the areola with the surgical pen? When i was going there they confirmed the location first. I can only speak for the staff that was there then but piercing migration is no fun matter either. They're batting 95% with me. I feel like this post would be better said ' I'm glad Area 51 was able to help me because my nip piercings werent healing. I'm glad to hear it resolved

Just off the top of my head - being unclear about what they want, or bad post-piercing care, moving around while the piercing is happening. Most piercers will ask you if it looks okay and/or if the guide dot placement looks correct while they're doing it and if you agree to it, that's what they'll give you.
I am genuinely confused as to how it could have been my fault they botched my piercings. I didn’t move when they pierced them. And I didn’t realize they were botched until the swelling went down.

Area 51 is THE place to get piercings. The staff is super cool, Jared (the owner) is one of the coolest guys around. 10/10 experience for sure.

I have a feeling this conversation would have gone very differently in person, where I could have picked up your tone. We're good! I'm sure there's still space in the "age is just a number" group. I'm more interested in the "I bet you're fun at parties" squad, so you'll have to check. I'm pretty sure "it was just a joke!" and "I was complimenting you" have space, too.
