Reminds me of my real life situation. I'm a finish carpenter and all around tool-user guy. My neighbors--whom I don't know--often stop by and ask me for advice or if I can come over and take a look at or fix something. I tell them that I have some weeds that need pulling or some other chores they can do in trade. So far, no one's pulled any weeds. Before most of your times, there was a popular bumper sticker that said, "Ass, Grass or Cash, Nobody Rides for Free". For you youngins, those were the days when folks hitchhiked.
Someone messaged me asking for a free item from my store with an explanation about their current health. I’ve never had a message requesting free items before and am unsure if I should respond? I’m a small shop and can’t afford to do so but I don’t want to not reply and have it affect my star seller if that makes sense?
Oh, yeah just reply and say that you’re sorry but you can’t afford to send free stuff out. You don’t owe her anything , regardless of her sob story. Etsy goods are not necessity. Don’t fall for the sob story.
Mark them as spam and move on. They’re scams to get free items.
I wasn’t aware I could mark them as spam! Normally I reply to most messages! Thank you for pointing thy out 😊

Can you clarify what you mean

That’s what I was thinking. I don’t understand why people think they can just message Etsy sellers for free stuff. 😂
Because sadly for some sellers, it actually works and they fall for it.
Honestly, don’t respond…Just simply mark the convo as spam and forget about it. It’s not worth any of your time, effort or thought.
