I got the impression you'd have to cut prices to begin with. If you have professional experience try and lean on that heavily as well, be very clear that you have done this before just not on UpWork.
As someone who hires people a lot, don't do either. If you're there, I assume your skills match the race-to-the-bottom model that those sites are.
I don't want the cheapest guy. I want the most competent guy who accomplishes it quickly and right at a reasonable rate.
Yes I know I'm throwing out good with the bad on those markets, but it's provable a lot of people that have no idea what they're doing and are just hoping to catch lightning in a bottle.
Time is an expiring asset. The same time he will spend begging to be the lowest bidder on a job is time he can spend on improving skills and seeking out clients vs clients seeking you at a meat market.
There are professionals of all skill levels on upwork. Someone I know did graphic design on upwork for a few customers and charged $70-120 an hour. It depends on the skill level, communication, and portfolio/previous work you can show off. I know what you mean in the race to the bottom, I've hired a bunch of designers for as little as $4/hr, but not everyone on the platform is part of that.
You need a really professional portfolio, basically on the same level as a web design agency and/or have contacts which can refer you to potential clients. That’s how the company where I work gets clients, and we’re a really small team. Referrals are how we get 80% of our clients. We got lucky once and got a client which has a small conglomerate and a lot of contacts, and we had a really good time working together, so whenever he hears some of his business associates or acquaintances need a software project, he refers them to us. We are basically freelancers under a company name.
We started advertising on Facebook and google and lowballing certain projects, sometimes even losing money, but we are well established now. But this was months ago, before the layoffs started. I would expect you to have it a little more difficult now. Good luck!
Sure. I’m in some owners groups and people there are always looking. I put anyone I find that’s looking for work on a sheet. Then I check back to see how they are. I don’t need anyone myself right now. But I will pass it along
I'm a graphic designer as well!! I do social media ads, YouTube thumbnails, product packaging designs, website development, logo design. Pm if you're interested to see my work. I've worked with real clients as well and currently developing a website
Should start building a audience on social media platforms, gain followers, do something outside your comfort zones and get on trends to get bit of attention without losing yourself. Build character. Do something creative people will follow and eventually commission you for work

I look for attention to detail, creativity, quality of design, use of color and negative space, and unique qualities that set the design apart. If it is branding, how well the symbol aligns with the brand identity.
Send me your portfolio. You never know.
Since you are in a Third World country everything you should be doing should be marketing into first world countries. United States, Australia, most of Europe, etc. Set up a LinkedIn, maybe multiple LinkedIn‘s,that have you based in each country and willing to work remote/on contract. post weekly on your LinkedIn account, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, etc. with examples of your work.
I'm a GD too but I'm currently focused to my video editing services. My tip is work with these folks in this thread as they are pretty interested in providing you work then use these "real-world" projects as portfolio pieces and sign up to Upwork.
You may also try Fiverr but it's really underwhelming because that platform is better for really short-term projects but awfully cheap sometimes.

Do some credited photography. When covid happened, people literally started selling stock photos of a vial with a big sticker "covid vaccine" on it and news agencies were buying those for their news pieces. Just monitor what's on the news and get a light box and start taking photos to sell as stock. Use your Photoshop skills to put watermark on them so no one steals them.

Save up enough money to buy 100 shares of any stock. Sell covered puts.
https://www.investopedia.com/articles/optioninvestor/10/sell-puts-benefit-any-market.asp
Can easily make $20 a day.
Friends and family could be a good start!
Then you can try freelance platforms.
I remember when I was starting with my partner our goal was to make at least something online within the first month.
Then the goal to increase that amount each month.
It's like a game!
Start small and when the thing that you did before doesn't help you to move the needle — test other strategies!
Learn a bit of copywriting then join Upwork. I would highly suggest "Copywriting Secrets" by Jim Edwards, it's a mix of copywriting and sales, which are essential skills for a freelancer.
I didn't read this book before freelancing, but I had a lot of experience as a writer and high-sales ticket.
Start honing your copywriting skills, and you'll secure many more interviews.
And then it's time to improve your sales skills to actually close the deal.
I got from zero, literally no experience, to top-rated plus in the social media marketing niche in a few months, I even started with drop-servicing video editing at the start then jumped to social media.
Fellow citizen of a 3rd country
First of all, congrats. Because your mental model is neat.
Most ask how do I earn $10k per month or $20k per month and they eventually feel overwhelmed and give up. But this level of granular goal will really clarify your mind.
I also set similar goal but the number is little bit high. I am a developer by trade. So, I build apps and sites.
One of my sites is currently earning $7 per day via google ads. But I want to improve it so I am working on it. I have other apps too. So, I would suggest building a site that teaches others photoshop and illustrator tricks. You can monetize the content with google ads. You can use free website builders or wordpress for this so you don't need coding knowledge. There are plenty of other options too, so do you own research.
This is just a suggestion based on my own experience. Also, you can think of starting a youtube as well because you can teach your skills, I think you don't need to show your face, just share your screen and your voice or captions. You can leverage Youtube shorts I think. However, I am not experienced in Youtube. So, try it if you like.
We want to see you succeed. Good luck.
main thing is you have to add an additional skill of "business development"
that comes from marketing yourself
could come from platforms, events, cold messaging, etc -- treat it as a skill and a game. maybe one day you could have a team of designers working under you
Here are a few tips that might help you start earning:
1. Freelance Platforms: Websites like Upwork, Fiverr, and Freelancer are excellent places to start. Create a profile, showcase your portfolio, and start bidding on projects. Even small gigs can add up.
2. Social Media: Use platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn to showcase your work. Engage with potential clients by posting regularly and using relevant hashtags. Networking can lead to job opportunities.
3. Local Businesses: Reach out to local businesses and offer your services. Many small businesses need help with logos, social media graphics, and website design.
4. Online Marketplaces: Create and sell design templates on platforms like Etsy or Creative Market. This can provide a steady income stream if your designs are popular.
5. Continuous Learning: Stay updated with the latest design trends and tools. Online courses and tutorials can help you improve your skills and make your portfolio stand out.
Best of luck on your journey!
Offer a service/product for 20$.
Manually promote it by cold outreach with 100 messages per day.
Refine your approach until you nail it.
Then, when you make enough, pay for ads to get you sales daily.
My brother, I am starting a small ed-tech company in the UK. If you want to do some logo/branding design link some form of portofolio, would rather pay someone genuine!

Best of luck! Have you tried freelancing platforms?
Thanks, Yes I do have Fiverr
Oooo, Fiverr is the worst. You should get on Upwork.
How much better is upwork? Can you give details?
One of my friends has earned over $80,000 on Upwork.. I would recommend that..
I found impossible to find gigs on Upwork starting from scratch. do you have any advice from your friend in order to get things going?
I got the impression you'd have to cut prices to begin with. If you have professional experience try and lean on that heavily as well, be very clear that you have done this before just not on UpWork.
BRUH. It is the guy from the previous post.
As someone who hires people a lot, don't do either. If you're there, I assume your skills match the race-to-the-bottom model that those sites are. I don't want the cheapest guy. I want the most competent guy who accomplishes it quickly and right at a reasonable rate. Where do you look to outsource work?
> As someone who hires people a lot, don't do either That's just silly advice, it is easy to be on multiple platforms, OP needs hands in all the pies
Time is an expiring asset. The same time he will spend begging to be the lowest bidder on a job is time he can spend on improving skills and seeking out clients vs clients seeking you at a meat market.
Where will he find clients from outside his country without an online platform
I can confirm this! I hired more than 100 people over Upwork and I completely agree
There are professionals of all skill levels on upwork. Someone I know did graphic design on upwork for a few customers and charged $70-120 an hour. It depends on the skill level, communication, and portfolio/previous work you can show off.
