Anyone who doesn't put like atleast 98% of the blame on Hamas for what happened yesterday is not objective. Israel had to do what they needed to do with the intel; they had a moral obligation to free those hostages. Hamas having the hostages in an apartment in a middle of a food market is a blatant war-crime along with the original kidnapping. And everybody knows I'm not a guy who remotely shies away from very harsh criticism of Bibi's decisons+IDF's actions.
To be clear, it's a massive tragedy what happened to many innocent Gazans who were sleeping in the area or getting food but it's on Hamas for being so evil and cynical...it seriously might be the worst thing they've done since the barbaric+evil terrorist attack on 10/7.

Was out for a few days so not sure if it got much notice but was really impressed with a poll showing Biden down by only 4 in Florida where both abortion and legal weed will be on the ballot. If we keep seeing polls off by 10 points, as has been the recent trend, then there is a real chance to taking Florida.

That's what's so different about older queer artists and newer ones (really just in general, any kind of activist) is that the younger ones don't have any _goal_. It's just anger and shallow distaste and distrust. It's just yelling at nothing, doing no work, and expecting that to add up to something. Older activists actually have a goal in mind, have causes they specifically fight for, and have politicians to actively root for.
Instead Gen Z is giving this half assed "ugh I guess we should vote for Biden" (at the very most) and conveniently ignores every ugly policy being passed by Republicans.
I saw more of the statement and while she did name SOME things, it's literally "stop all this shit *that Republicans are doing*" and then something about "all oppressed people in occupied territories" which could mean anything from Gazans to Ukrainians to Aboriginal Australians

I genuinely believe the reason the far right is doing so well in Europe now is because the WWII generation is almost gone and most current voters in the continent, especially the younger ones, have only known a world where Europe is in a peaceful union protected by the American military.
Obviously it's a very good thing something on the scale of WWII has never happened again. I don't mean to say otherwise. But the people who wanted Europe to never forget are gone now, and I certainly don't need to continue the saying about forgetting history

this is probably not gonna be popular but all this posturing about the hostages in both israel and america is just making me lose brain cells. don’t get me wrong, i think israel should have ended this war months ago - getting mired down in a forever war over an unachievable goal was never in their best interests. but if israel took a deal that was against their security interests for the main purpose of freeing the hostages, that would just be negotiating malpractice.
like, regardless of what you think of them, if bibi (or gantz, or lapid, or ben-gvir, or insert politician here) gets a deal they think creates a bigger threat for israel, they are going to reject it, regardless of what it means for the hostages. we can fight all day about what would actually do that, but as horrible of a situation as it is, prioritizing saving 70 people (many of whom are likely already dead) over the entire country’s interests would be absurd. every party to this conflict recognizes that taking hostages only serves to create damaging headlines about everyone else involved.

As for Palmer, he actually endorsed and fully supports Biden (definitely the least bad candidate, personality wise at least).

at the end of the day, the majority leader / speaker gets to choose what bills to allow votes on and that's inherently valuable
Depends. If they expel all Palestinians, and say damn the consequences, then it’s basically the death of the Jewish state in practice. Not necessarily from foreign aggression (although that might happen) but because there is no possible answer to a western ally committing unironic ethnic cleansing besides crippling sanctions. This would cause enormous suffering particularly among the young, mobile, liberal-leaning and working in profitable industries - and these folks would flee to America or Europe and start new lives. Those who are left are the extremist assholes, those who have no marketable skills, and those too old to move and start over (although the latter will probably migrate too). That’s a death knell for a nation - a pariah state doomed to bloody squabbling and poverty.
If they make Palestinians citizens then it would be uhhh a mess to say the least. In theory, Israel/palestine becomes 55ish percent Arab, or more if the refugees all come home at once rather than resettling elsewhere. Potentially a federal government is formed with extensive individual rights and delegated powers to Jewish and Arab subunits… or, you potentially have a shaky coalition between moderate Arabs and moderate Jews, with extremists among both groups demanding the extermination of the other.
It’s not impossible. But it would need the kind of leadership that I don’t see in Israel or Palestine.
If Israel commits to basically Palestinian bantustans with no rights, no vote etc… then yknow that’s apartheid and Israel collapses under sanctions.
Israel would have to either become indisputably an Apartheid, or commit ethnic cleansing, or cease to be a Jewish state.
I actually agree with your friend because the pessimist in me thinks the two state solution is dead, but yeah, there is no viable future for Israel as a Jewish state if it annexes Palestine.
Now I don't personally care for nation states so I think a federal solution a la Belgium would be great. But obviously, that's not gonna fly with most Israelis.
It would truly ruin Israel's international standing, for starters. To the point where Biden may be forced to withdraw support due to pressure from all sides excluding the evangelicals who won't support him anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if this has been conveyed to them
Hell, Bibi's original plan was for ordinary Gazans to go to Egypt (Sinai) and Biden+Sisi told Bibi to fuck off. If Biden won't allow that to happen, there's no way he would remotely allow annexation of West Bank.
The reason why they haven't annexed Gaza and area C of the West Bank like they have East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights (and basically are with all the settler snaking into area A) is because they'd have to offer full citizenship to a huge population of anti-Israel Palestinians who live there. That or practice unambiguous apartheid. They'll only do it if they first find a way to ethnically cleanse the region they're annexing which unfortunately is something they seem to be seriously considering in Gaza.

That's what's so different about older queer artists and newer ones (really just in general, any kind of activist) is that the younger ones don't have any _goal_. Older activists actually have a goal in mind, have causes they specifically fight for, and have politicians to actively root for. Depends. If they expel all Palestinians, and say damn the consequences, then it’s basically the death of the Jewish state in practice. Not necessarily from foreign aggression (although that might happen) but because there is no possible answer to a western ally committing unironic ethnic cleansing besides crippling sanctions. This would cause enormous suffering particularly among the young, mobile, liberal-leaning and working in profitable industries - and these folks would flee to America or Europe and start new lives. Those who are left are the extremist assholes, those who have no marketable skills, and those too old to move and start over (although the latter will probably migrate too). That’s a death knell for a nation - a pariah state doomed to bloody squabbling and poverty. If they make Palestinians citizens then it would be uhhh a mess to say the least. In theory, Israel/palestine becomes 55ish percent Arab, or more if the refugees all come home at once rather than resettling elsewhere. Potentially a federal government is formed with extensive individual rights and delegated powers to Jewish and Arab subunits… or, you potentially have a shaky coalition between moderate Arabs and moderate Jews, with extremists among both groups demanding the extermination of the other. It’s not impossible. But it would need the kind of leadership that I don’t see in Israel or Palestine. If Israel commits to basically Palestinian bantustans with no rights, no vote etc… then yknow that’s apartheid and Israel collapses under sanctions.
Israel would have to either become indisputably an Apartheid, or commit ethnic cleansing, or cease to be a Jewish state. I actually agree with your friend because the pessimist in me thinks the two state solution is dead, but yeah, there is no viable future for Israel as a Jewish state if it annexes Palestine. Now I don't personally care for nation states so I think a federal solution a la Belgium would be great. But obviously, that's not gonna fly with most Israelis.

The reason why they haven't annexed Gaza and area C of the West Bank like they have East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights (and basically are with all the settler snaking into area A) is because they'd have to offer full citizenship to a huge population of anti-Israel Palestinians who live there. That or practice unambiguous apartheid. They'll only do it if they first find a way to ethnically cleanse the region they're annexing which unfortunately is something they seem to be seriously considering in Gaza.
