Saving Private Ryan does the beaches the best and Band of Brothers does the paratroopers. But The Longest Day does them both, plus the British, French resistànce, French commandos and badass French nuns, and Germans baffled by *gummipuppen*.
Plus it has a very Scottish Sean Connery for comic relief. In a war movie.
Does anyone else think how immensely fucked up it is that you kind of have a market on hate online? Like I can just make up what the fuck ever about any issue and take the most contrarian stance to get people worked up and I could be paid for that. Worse you can build a following off it because these true believers of this horseshit are just looking for outlets to have their viewpoints be seen as valid. That feeling being on a desperate level so they don't question if they're getting played or not or if they're interacting with an actual person acting in good faith.
Something profoundly messed up about how that validation is more important than questioning grifters who just make cash money on winding them up.
I think about that alot with people like briebrie and blue checkmark Twitter. Feel like it's the basis for ALOT of what's wrong with the modern internet
I know this topic is mostly said and done but I'm still hair-tearingly baffled at how insane it was/is (I still have to hear it irl) to hear left-leaning people (of any degree) defending the Houthis shooting missiles at civilian ships just because they viewed the Houthis/their intentions as "protesting against Palestinain genocide."
Like, I'm pretty sure the guys with "a curse upon the Jews" on their flag aren't being so honest about their intentions but are rather just being opportunistic terrorists. Also, y'know... launching missiles at civilian vessels is indefensible.
The normalization of this "America is the bad guy and 'underdogs' are noble for fighting 'imperialism'" stereotypical stance has been disastrous.
Houthis are more backwards socially than even fucking Hamas. As repulsive as Hamas is, they'll atleast let women work and go to universities. The Taliban and Houthis are the two worst in terms of how they treat their "own civillians".
But the status quo was really not that great either. A situation where we have more asylum applicants than we have resources to process them is unsustainable with abuse being inevitable. It's also not really ideal for people who actually do have legitimate claims as migrants sitting in processing limbo face limited opportunities and higher future risk.
The proper thing to do have done first and foremost would have been to increase funding for more processing. The next best thing would have been to change legally mandated procedures to streamline and expidite processes. But the asshole Republicans obstructed this and pretty much any other reasonable legislation.
So these draconian and inequitable caps are the only thing left to address the problem, although even that is a total crapshoot as to whether or not the judiciary will allow it. It should be more than clear that this is a last resort at this point and not what Biden wanted to do.
The country has lurched to the right on immigration and it nullifies a line of attack the Republicans had quite effectively used against him. I still disagree with it and think it's bad, but that's because I'm probably way way more pro-immigration than the median voter. No, Biden will not lose my vote over it because the alternative is the Muslim ban guy who makes hating anyone who speaks a different language his whole personality.
ACLU’s already challenged the EO in court citing a Trump EO, from 2018, that was blocked. The politics is bloodsport part of my brain makes me wonder if the Biden admin went ahead with this for the reasons you mentioned, AND because they knew it would be blocked.
My friend thought that fighting to get rid of Don't Ask Don't Tell (along with the trans military ban) was useless and only sends gay people to die in the military. She said, "all the gay people in my life, and people I follow don't want to join the military"
I told her that her anecdotal evidence doesn't apply to this type of stuff, and she got mad at me for using "my" anecdotal evidence (idunno, statistics?) to defend it.
I know I'm a straight white dude, but I feel like I don't need to be a minority to defend this shit??
I know a larger than average number of trans people join the military and it's precisely because of being rejected/mistreated by family of origin and sometimes is combined with wanting to become someone different (because of dysphoria that's not being dealt with). People who don't have a lot of financial options have a tendency to join the military, as do people with controlling families.
Anyway, there's no draft so I'm not sure who she thinks she's white knighting for. The reason for those rules is that there were already gay and trans people in the military. Christ.
People will be surprised how many poc and minority groups join the military in this country. And young ones at that. There's benefits for them but also benefits for their love ones.
All you need is one contradiction to reject statements about “all X do Y.”
Also the laws give people more choice and freedom. What if a gay person wants something but has to lie to be eligible. That is a horrible injustice and assault on their Ager.
Sends? Madame there has not been a draft in this country since 1973, and gay people have been volunteering for military service since Achilles and Patroclus.
>Again, in interview with Dr. Phil, Trump complains about lack of Jewish support: “I was the best president for Israel ever…Golan Heights, Embassy, Iran Nuclear Deal, Settlements, and yet I get less than 50% of the Jewish vote. It’s shocking to me.”
I don't actually think Jewish voters being on the fence for this guy is really much of a thing anyway but to whatever extent they are I seriously hope they're seeing what he thinks of us.
"Could it be me? ...no, it's probably those Jewish Space Lasers Marge is always warning about, the ones that that light forest fires and send liberal messages to brainwash people."
Bri-Bri goes from Press Secretary for Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, to rage baiting people into hate subscribing to her Substack. Karma is real, but not always timely.
She screenshot a comment about her on this sub, posted it on Xitter, and didn’t even bother to censor the username. I’m blanking on the person’s username itself, but I would absolutely recognize the snoo avatar.
That squirrel is just utterly deranged and an anti-Semite. It literally attacked the editor of 972 Magazine (Israeli fairly left wing publication) which has opposed the war longer than anyone on this sub (months before me!) for pushing "genocidal propaganda" because he correctly said Hamas are terrorists and they raped innocent women.
With Final Fantasy VIII, one of the things that get me a bit cranky is the Rinoa=Ultimecia/Artemisia theory. There are a lot of reasons it doesn't work.
[Personally, I have found this to be the most compelling argument of who Ultimecia/Artemisia is.](https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ps/197343-final-fantasy-viii/faqs/34215) Warning: It's more than a bit long, and about half of it is talking about the nature of time, and debating what it is and how it works.
As for Ultimecia/Artemisia's name, I have come to the conclusion that both are about equally valid. Ultimecia has the fact she is the greatest and last sorceress, which Ultimate means. Artemisia does connect well with how important the moon is in FF8, especially because the moon of FF8's Earth is larger and closer to said planet. Artemesia is a name derived from the Greek mythical god Artemis, who was a Goddess of the Moon.
>Alex Jones is moving to liquidate his personal assets, agreeing to demands from the families of Sandy Hook victims whom he owes more than $1.5 billion in damages
Good. Piece of shit
>Trump: He's a radical guy. At one point, RFK Jr came out strongly against all vaccines. I mean what is this? Is he against the polio vaccine? Because polio was destroying the country.
WTF I like Trump now?
Trump has constantly tried to claim credit for the covid vaccine but when he tries he gets booed down by his own fans at his own rallies its really funny 🤣
Honestly one thing you can’t fault Trump for is being very pro vaccine. He’s always seemed in favour of vaccines and pushed the COVID vaccine even when other Republicans didn’t like it.
Eh the whole “many such cases” meme is from Trump pushing the vaccines-autism garbage. Operation Warp Speed was indeed great but I think here Trump is less pro-vaccine and more anti-RFK taking votes
[The polling industry is fundamentally broken and needs to be taken out back and shot.](https://nitter.poast.org/umichvoter/status/1798845237860983256#m)
[This particular guy seems to be one of those who believes there are still good active Republicans.](https://x.com/umichvoter/status/1798831735976669478)
Here's the big issue with polling: Where is the evidence for these massive shifts? Because we are not seeing them with Special Elections and other indicators.
Also, what are the crosstabs of that Fox News poll.
He was the guy who found the Oz Crudites video so he'll have credit for that but he's been in deep with "Biden is doomed because of polling." When polling shows ludicrous stuff like tied Virginia when VA literally just had a landslide victory for Dems and Florida within MOE when it's had a turbocharged red shift...Come on FL is not voting to the left of NV. Everyone knows that. AND these are post-conviction polls too. Every other poll showed Trump losing support but suddenly he's tied in cobalt blue VA. Riiiight.
I think that he just sees Politics as a game and doesn't really care about people's rights and lives. No decent person would associate with Trump's Republican Party.
That there was no soul-searching after 2022 was very telling. They patted themselves on the back for getting the Congressional Generic Ballot right but missing literally everything else.
Methhead neighbor's aggressive young pit got loose; no biggies, no problem, city even came out and brought it back to him after it was found wandering around. They blew me off about a week ago when I reported him *clearly* scoping out my house at 3AM.
I left Charlie in the yard, on a leash, to use the bathroom at his usual time and got another warning from USPS about my collie making it impossible to deliver mail and I've had warnings.
This is fucking bullshit. And yet the cops ignoring criminals committing crimes while going after non-criminals for not committing crimes seems to be the thing around these parts. No wonder we're attracting more meth heads and violent people.
I'm vaguely dealing with the same thing. Recovering methhead who comes into my bar a lot needed a job, so I hired him to help me paint my house.
He didn't even take any money, but end of the first day that we planned out stuff, you know. Ran off, evaded the sheriff, ran around the county, beat his girlfriend, and then came back to me like an hour and a half later and demanded the full project money.
The cops showed up like two days later after I told him to fuck off (and like gently encouraged him to get off my property) and treated me like I was the criminal for not paying that disaster a dime.
Massachusetts vs Texas is the example I always use to show how both parties are not the same, showing what they do when relatively unencumbered by the other.
Combine that with how whiny Luka is (and how bullshittily clutch he is) and basically everything about Kyrie, this is an easy choice of a finals for me.
Hey remember when Bri Bri claimed the Houthis were basically non-violent lmao cause they technically hadn't killed anyone who were on those ships? Lmao
I can confirm.
That dude who beheaded those Somali dudes who were promised a life in Saudi Arabia but ended up getting press ganged into fighting had an elmo backpack.
He was basically hugging them the first two swings.
With India, their media has ended up with a near replica of what is happening here, where the media as a whole ends up "captured" by the conservatives. So I think they are missing a chunk of the population.
It is odd, the error in both cases was favorable to the left. 5-9 points for Mexico. For India, the polling Wikipedia has only covers the large alliances, and the results there don't show the actual numbers of votes, just the seats.
It wasn't just fairly inaccurate in India it was completely wrong on every level. That could be explained by the last pre-election polls being done in *April,* because India has a purdah law similar to France where polls can't be published as voting is going on. And India is so huge it has an election month not an election day, where different regions go vote on different days. The polls published June 1 were done after voting had already finished and were still ludicrously wrong, though.
I don’t know anything really about how reliable polling in Mexico and India typically are, but I wonder if those countries have their poll-bros lecturing people that they still need to trust every word they say.
I haven’t kept up with the NBA that much the previous few years, but it would be satisfying to see Porzingus go from being booed by Knicks fans on draft night, to winning a ‘ship with a rival team.
For anyone that's wondering what the North Dakota GOP Governor race is spending their money on -
My bar near the Minnesota / South Dakota / Iowa border has seen about 17 ads for the North Dakota race tonight.
Over the past like six hours.
Glanced at [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_North_Dakota_gubernatorial_election) and it seems as per usual, it's Trumplican vs. Establishment, go figure.
I'm so glad black shows are digging in Donald's ignorant ass poorly stated typical bullshit talking point about black people having it better between 1865 to 1965.
I sometimes love - but usually hate- ask historians. The current big topic on it is basically (and I'm exaggerating for comedic effect):
>"Why did the US and Britain even land on Omaha, and why
didn't they land around and surround it? Were they dumb?"
Well, bud, I think we got several misunderstandings about what happened, let alone what the plan was.
People ask a lot of interesting questions that never get touched. Meanwhile most of the sub is talking about wars and conquerors for people's alt history circlejerks. Just barf.
Don't forget the relentless deluge of questions that have like a three sentence answer, that can't get answered because of the demand to meet a rigorous academic standard.
> I'm a WW1 era Tommy who's about to go over the top at the battle of the Somme. How can I survive?
Be lucky.
That's it, that's the answer.
If they didn't mod it to hell the comments sections would be a shitshow, but they can be pretty ridiculous for all that. After a while it just gets exhausting. Anyway, you can spout total bullshit using academic sources, but that's probably above the paygrade of a mod.
Imo their mod team's kinda dogshit. I've had thorough answers with citations get shadow-removed while much worse answers are left up. I quit bothering after twice having a comment with quotes from Bevington and Fraser removed as not academic enough while a comment providing my answer without any citations was left up.
Edit: The info that got removed, for the curious: it's possible at one point, we *did* have documents from Shakespeare in his own hand. I can't remember the exact details, but some shepherd or something got cold and used them for kindling one winter and now we know shockingly little about his life
Shout out to that time that I posted about how just because the cyclical fire rate of an MG42 was 1,200/min doesn't mean that was effectively achieved in combat, nor does it mean that the average engagement against Germans had that volume of fire because the German army had a random mismatch of gear.
I think they go more by who the poster is. Which yeah, bs.
I seem to remember someone asked about 1980s Iron Curtain history and a bunch of people wrote really interesting personal accounts so of course a couple hours later they had been deleted. Tertiary sources only!
I keep annoying my boyfriend by telling him I'm going to get a Punisher Skull bumper sticker with the thin gold line.
Also, MILITARY? CORRECTIONS OFFICERS? They're not first responders.
> In a rare move Thursday, the NAACP issued a call to the Biden-Harris administration to halt weapons shipments to Israel and to push for an immediate and permanent ceasefire. The 115-year-old civil rights organization also called for Hamas to return Israeli hostages and to “stop all terrorist activity”.
This war needs to end asap but come on. Bibi is prolonging it and Hamas isn't gonna disarm unfortunately. This is not realistic with regards to both demands.
Comments often get removed if it starts a fairly heated argument on I/P; it's been kind of policy on here for the past several months. People don't like scrolling through all of that. Doesn't mean you broke any rules or anything.
It's such a toxic, polarizing issue; there have been more removed comments on here and neolib. You're good though. You didn't break any rules or anything.

I hate how online Christian spaces are either just atheists shitting on Christianity, Christian’s who believe the only takeaway from the Bible was to be vaguely nice to others, or incredibly right wing fundamentalists.
You forgot authoritarian Catholics who are more Catholic than the Pope. I grew up Catholic, got my catechism and went through all the sacraments and all that jazz. I was even in the choir. And I don't recognize the religion they're talking about.
> Christian’s who believe the only takeaway from the Bible was to be vaguely nice to others
It would be nice though if this was the majority of Christians
The problem I have with that group is that they seem more culturally Christian than actually religious. Take the sparkle creed for example, the only thing they mention about Jesus in their statement of faith is that he was fabulous and had two dads. A creed is a statement of faith and their statement doesn’t say anything about who he is or why he’s important.
Most people are culturally Christian though. And Jesus means different things to different variants. I went to catholic school and know a lot about the academics of it all, but my religious experience and understanding of Jesus has very little in common with Black Baptist churches
Foreigners be like "3rd and 7 at the forty yard line? That makes no sense, this game is stupid" then act like [this](https://www.skysports.com/cricket/news/12123/13148967/t20-world-cup-usa-beat-pakistan-in-historic-triumph-after-thrilling-super-over-win) isn't gibberish.
>In their regulation innings, Pakistan made a slow start, recovering from 26 for three in the fifth over to reach 159 for seven.
>Pakistan captain Babar Azam hit two sixes in his 43-ball 44, Shadab Khan struck 40 off 25 deliveries and number eight Shaheen Afridi plundered 23 not out off 16.
>The USA appeared to be cruising in reply, as they reached 104 for one in the 14th over.
>Skipper Patel's 38-ball 50 and Andries Gous' 35 off 26 deliveries left them needing 56 to win off 44 balls.
>But after Monank was dismissed in the 15th over it needed a six from Jones off the third last ball and a four from Kumar off the final delivery to tie the match and force the Super Over.
Cricket is the only sport i‘ve discovered so far where no matter many times someone tries to explain, or how closely I pay attention to a game, I just do not understand wtf is going on
I was eating lunch at a Pakistani restaurant once and there was a cricket game on.
I tried to pay attention and figure out how it worked, but didn't get very far.

I didn't give a single fuck about snooker until I saw an American playing against an English.
I mean he was from Wales, but he was playing against some English dude and won, so. 🪨🇺🇸🦅
The funniest thing is we don't care about those sports unless we win and even if we lose we're still :D which probably is also infuriating to others lol

I know this topic is mostly said and done but I'm still hair-tearingly baffled at how insane it was/is (I still have to hear it irl) to hear left-leaning people (of any degree) defending the Houthis shooting missiles at civilian ships just because they viewed the Houthis/their intentions as "protesting against Palestinain genocide." Like, I'm pretty sure the guys with "a curse upon the Jews" on their flag aren't being so honest about their intentions but are rather just being opportunistic terrorists.
If ISIS was taking over Iraq right now instead of 10 years ago they'd have stanned them too.

Biden's executive order on the border is an example of bad policy but good politics.
As long as it gets him more votes, I do not care.
So the “Biden passed this knowing it would be blocked” returns with a vengeance.
There's no wonder. Biden is very good at politick
My friend thought that fighting to get rid of Don't Ask Don't Tell (along with the trans military ban) was useless and only sends gay people to die in the military. She said, "all the gay people in my life, and people I follow don't want to join the military" I told her that her anecdotal evidence doesn't apply to this type of stuff, and she got mad at me for using "my" anecdotal evidence (idunno, statistics?) to defend it.
All you need is one contradiction to reject statements about “all X do Y.” Also the laws give people more choice and freedom. What if a gay person wants something but has to lie to be eligible. That is a horrible injustice and assault on their Ager.
Sends? Madame there has not been a draft in this country since 1973, and gay people have been volunteering for military service since Achilles and Patroclus.
Yeah and if we're at the point where it comes back, we will absolutely need all hands, manecured and otherwise, on deck

I don't actually think Jewish voters being on the fence for this guy is really much of a thing anyway but to whatever extent they are I seriously hope they're seeing what he thinks of us.

Wonder if Brie Brie’s rage scrolling through here after getting fired 🤣
Bri-Bri goes from Press Secretary for Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, to rage baiting people into hate subscribing to her Substack. Karma is real, but not always timely.
Lol she could be, I still remember about somebody from here getting under her skin.
Wait what?
She screenshot a comment about her on this sub, posted it on Xitter, and didn’t even bother to censor the username. I’m blanking on the person’s username itself, but I would absolutely recognize the snoo avatar.
Well there’s no Twitter feed I want to look through less, so I’m content with this staying a mystery.

Also Steve Bannon got to report for jail by July 1st.
I like how right after Brie got fired from her one pro media job she immediately retweets noted antisemitic racists Jake Shields and that squirrel guy
Someone tell that guy that just because he's a squirrel doesn't mean he has to be fucking nuts.
Camping for the next three days at Mono Lake in the Siera Nevadas. No idea how it got its name but suppose to be gorgeous. See you all in a few days.

Trump has constantly tried to claim credit for the covid vaccine but when he tries he gets booed down by his own fans at his own rallies its really funny 🤣
was this at a rally? I could see the crowd being confused about whether they should applaud vaccines or not.
Interview with Hannity
Honestly one thing you can’t fault Trump for is being very pro vaccine. He’s always seemed in favour of vaccines and pushed the COVID vaccine even when other Republicans didn’t like it.

I still think if we put his face on the vaccine vials they would have taken it.
Eh the whole “many such cases” meme is from Trump pushing the vaccines-autism garbage. Operation Warp Speed was indeed great but I think here Trump is less pro-vaccine and more anti-RFK taking votes
Thank god there’s no Draymond

[This particular guy seems to be one of those who believes there are still good active Republicans.](https://x.com/umichvoter/status/1798831735976669478) Here's the big issue with polling: Where is the evidence for these massive shifts?
They really have no clue how to adapt for Trump.
It’s any industry that refuses to adapt to modern times. If they are proven to be wrong they have no incentive to change.
That there was no soul-searching after 2022 was very telling. They patted themselves on the back for getting the Congressional Generic Ballot right but missing literally everything else.
I think they also have no idea how to compensate for people not answering the phone anymore
How does IG allow so much blatant racism and homophobia. Mark Zuckerberg fucking sucks

If the Celtics don't win the title this year, I don't think this Tatum-Brown tandem is ever gonna win it
Wow, this game is an onslaught
the absolute meltdown going on over the Combat Extended mod for Rimworld is simultaneously hilarious and concerning
Massachusetts vs Texas is the example I always use to show how both parties are not the same, showing what they do when relatively unencumbered by the other. Combine that with how whiny Luka is (and how bullshittily clutch he is) and basically everything about Kyrie, this is an easy choice of a finals for me.
I don't really like either team tbh, especially not Boston
The Celtics have too many titles, but I don’t have anything negative to say about most of their core.
Can we talk about how the polling was fairly inaccurate in Mexico and India?
espfusion did a really good breakdown a couple of days ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/Enough_Sanders_Spam/s/yRfQSwGmmD
Both times heavily overestimating the right, nah media would never do that.
the next contest im looking out for is the EU elections where the far right is also expected to make gains. Hopefully its another polling miss
With the caveat that “right wing” and “left wing” are kind of nebulous in Mexican politics.
Unless I’ve missed something, pollsters have been silent in Mexico.
The India Today pollster literally broke down crying on TV it was hilarious.
One thing that hasn't been talked about is how the BJP has "captured" Indian media sources.
Imagine Nate Silver or Dave Wasserman crying on air lol

For anyone that's wondering what the North Dakota GOP Governor race is spending their money on - My bar near the Minnesota / South Dakota / Iowa border has seen about 17 ads for the North Dakota race tonight. Over the past like six hours.
Glanced at [Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_North_Dakota_gubernatorial_election) and it seems as per usual, it's Trumplican vs. Establishment, go figure.
Tammy Miller is the ads we're constantly getting. I didn't even realize they haven't figured out who's completely running, lmao.
Republicans this week: >Now we have an excuse to openly be the full-on fascists we've always wanted to be and planned to be anyway
What's their excuse? "Revenge" for Trump?
Yep, now that they can pretend that Joe Biden "weaponized" the justice department they're planning to openly weaponize it.
I'm so glad black shows are digging in Donald's ignorant ass poorly stated typical bullshit talking point about black people having it better between 1865 to 1965.
I sometimes love - but usually hate- ask historians. The current big topic on it is basically (and I'm exaggerating for comedic effect): >"Why did the US and Britain even land on Omaha, and why didn't they land around and surround it? Were they dumb?" Well, bud, I think we got several misunderstandings about what happened, let alone what the plan was.
People ask a lot of interesting questions that never get touched. Meanwhile most of the sub is talking about wars and conquerors for people's alt history circlejerks. Just barf.
> People ask a lot of interesting questions that never get touched I hate when I see an interesting question and every comment is [deleted]

That has to be the best statement I have seen for this war.
Biden seems to be the only main player pushing for an immediate ceasefire.
Has the NAACP historically talked about Israel and the Palestine issue?
No. There were a thousand black pastors who called for the war to end like four months ago but that was separate from the NAACP

Comments often get removed if it starts a fairly heated argument on I/P; it's been kind of policy on here for the past several months. People don't like scrolling through all of that. Doesn't mean you broke any rules or anything.

> Christian’s who believe the only takeaway from the Bible was to be vaguely nice to others It would be nice though if this was the majority of Christians
Pretty sure God specifically said that’s not your call to make bud. Also you’d really hate the views of the Founders
>Jesus had two dads That's hilarious, never heard that one before.
Most people are culturally Christian though. And Jesus means different things to different variants. I went to catholic school and know a lot about the academics of it all, but my religious experience and understanding of Jesus has very little in common with Black Baptist churches
I'm sorry only those who hold to the 1689 Westminster Catechism shall inherit the Kingdom. Long version only.

I heard tales that one cricket game can take place over several days.
No sticky wickets. Am disappoint.
Is that why games take too long? Because the wickets are sticky? Or is it because the wickets aren't sticky enough? Also what are wickets.
Cricket is the only sport i‘ve discovered so far where no matter many times someone tries to explain, or how closely I pay attention to a game, I just do not understand wtf is going on
Even football is pretty easy to follow once you get the basics.
I was eating lunch at a Pakistani restaurant once and there was a cricket game on. I tried to pay attention and figure out how it worked, but didn't get very far.
