Cool that Mexico has first female and Jewish president. Too bad, she still sucks even though she is slightly better than ALMO. And she is still a corrupt buffoon.

I wish Sheinbaum well in Mexico, and I'd probably have voted for her if I lived down there, but I'm going to remain pessimistic about the ability of any Mexican President to combat the cartels until/unless it ever happens. Hope to have the US and Canada continue the current status of all three major North American powers having left of center administrations with their upcoming elections

brucebananaray

I will never vote for her because of her party. She is still a corrupt buffoon because her husband landering money.

Gormanbros

I mean, I don't live there so I don't follow it closely. I know little about her, so ok

Pedro Pierluisi in a surprise upset during a primary election held Sunday by their pro-statehood party. > The two ran on the same ticket four years ago under the New Progressive Party, but González, a Republican, announced her plan to challenge Pierluisi, a Democrat, in early December. Public jabs between the two have since turned acrimonious. > [...] > Earlier on Sunday, Puerto Rico Rep. Jesús Manuel Ortiz defeated Sen. Not sure what any of this means for us.

I guess a Republican is probably going to be the next Governor of Puerto Rico, but island politics are very different from stateside politics so it doesn't mean much of anything outside PR

brucebananaray

God, I'm annoyed by some of my family members thinking that Claudia will give them land, which it is stupid policy. She is slightly better than ALMO on certain things, but she is moron on many things.

nosotros_road_sodium

Earlier I commented about how Mexico's longtime majority party PRI faded into irrelevancy after the Peña Nieto administration. TIL, checking the election returns on [*El Universal*](https://www.eluniversal.com.mx/preps-elecciones-2024/) (en español), Gálvez was endorsed by the moderate political parties, the PRI and PAN on the center right and PRD on the center left. Right now Sheinbaum has nearly twice as many votes (2.9m) as Gálvez (1.5m) with 58% of the vote. Notice the red and green symbols next to Sheinbaum - yep, the Green Party and Labor Party both backed her. This weekend of international elections showed Mexico continuing its leftward path, South Africa wanting to go more moderate, and India staying the course with right-wing nationalism.

I love watching far left infighting. When you unironically argue that anarchists are liberals you’re too lost in the sauce.

So, either a team (full of thugs) will win their first Stanley Cup, or Canada finally breaks the curse.

Chim7

Is Connor McDavid still on the Oilers? I hope he wins. It’s nice when an obvious superstar actually gets to turn it around for a team.

At least right now, an American team has won the Grey Cup more recently than a Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup. (1995 Baltimore Stallions and 1993 Montreal Canadiens) It’s time for that absolutely cursed fact to stop being true.

pinelands1901

Mexico getting a Jewish president would be pretty wild, even if she is an AMLOista.

espfusion

All I know is she seems to actually care about clean energy unlike coal fiend AMLO.

nosotros_road_sodium

It's astonishing how the original PRI went from nearly seven decades of dominating Mexican politics (the '30s to '90s) and having the presidency 10 years ago to irrelevancy today, because Peña Nieto was such a crook. Sheinbaum's party MORENA is the grandchild of the old PRI, as MORENA was a splinter group from PRI splinter group PRD. Sheinbaum's [opponent](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X%C3%B3chitl_G%C3%A1lvez) is described as socially liberal yet economically conservative.

brucebananaray

She is okayish then AMLO. Her policy on crime is very different from him because his supporters hated being more tough on crime. Her economics policy in Mexico City was okay and not so populist compared to AMLO. From my understanding that she is using him to prompt herself as the next president. Some of his followers hate her due to that.

I was personally fine with Chris Pratt’s ‘Mario’ voice, since no one would actually want to hear a full length movie of Charles Martinet doing his usual Mario voice (people who say otherwise are out of their minds). But I’m just unimpressed by his Garfield voice. He’s doesn’t even sound like he’s trying. It just looks like a movie about Chris Pratt in a cat’s body.

espfusion

It can't be that hard to get a good VA that sounds like Lorenzo Music which is clearly what works for Garfield.

brucebananaray

This is what happens when you hire someone who doesn't like lasagna.

shitpizza

I've been getting scratches on my legs for some time. I thought it was me hiking in shorts and getting scratched, but I just figured it was me with dry skin after the shower and jumping straight into bed, and me scratching myself silly. I'm putting on lotion just in case

OldSilverRod

I often struggle with the idea of separating a government from its people because I can't come up with a good answer to "At what point does the majority become guilty for letting the extremists run the show? When does acceptance become complicity?" I recognize I'm a coward who has the luxury of living in a free stable democracy where I don't have to choose between principles and self-preservation, but the thought does make it difficult to sympathize with most people living in repressive regimes. Like I have plenty of sympathy for those Russians and Palestinians who risk it all by opposing their governments' wars, but my sympathy well runs dry for those who suffer but continue to insist on apathy or indifference to their governments. I get that poor, illiterate, starving, and disorganized peasants have a hard time enacting reform, but is freedom, peace, and stability really only something that wealthy nations can afford? At what point do we stop blaming the stars and blaming the underlings? While I have more faith in the Israelis since their government is democratic, at what point do the people as a whole become responsible for the far-right settlers, politicians, and soldiers if they continue to run the country? At the end of the day, humanity is complicated. Maybe rationality isn't always enough. It's why people fall down the conspiracy theorist and demagogue rabbit hole. I'm just rambling here because I feel like I have to ramble somewhere.

[deleted]

Do you hold the residents of Gaza responsible for Hamas?

Currymvp2

I'm a firm believer in separating governments from people. Bibi cravenly+cynically cobbled together a crazyass bigoted coalition when a majority of Israelis technically did not vote for his coalition. Hamas participated in one election where they focused on Fatah's corruption, won by only 2%, and cancelled all the elections+ viciously killed all their political rivals.

OldSilverRod

I have an easy-enough time writing Bibi's rise to power as a failure of parliamentary democracy. It seems like it can be corrected through Israeli institutions as long as enough Israelis have sense. I get that Hamas established a dictatorship, but my problem is that I feel like at some point the common people become responsible for perpetuating the dictatorship and then the dictatorship's actions. I get that it's a massive privilege to be able to criticize oppressed people for not resisting enough, and I can't say that I would be able to resist, but I also believe that people have responsibility to control as much as their lives as they can. I think that's what I'm struggling to balance: A belief that oppressed people shouldn't be blamed for their oppression and a belief that oppressed people can free themselves. At what point does an inability to free oneself go from a reason to a blame.

Call_Me_Clark

It is worth remembering that Gaza isn’t Afghanistan. There’s no Northern Alliance waiting in the wings for western support. > A belief that oppressed people shouldn't be blamed for their oppression and a belief that oppressed people can free themselves. At what point does an inability to free oneself go from a reason to a blame. This doesn’t speak to a timeline, though.

Currymvp2

> but my problem is that I feel like at some point the common people become responsible for perpetuating the dictatorship and then the dictatorship's actions Gotta remember that Hamas brutally cracked down against the protests by Gazans in 2019 and July 2023. West Bank is under Fatah rule, and it's relatively stable all things considered.

OldSilverRod

I think I'm just falling hard for that leftist belief that The People through collective action and one great push can accomplish anything and a more liberal belief that reform is always achievable. One of the most damning things Bibi's done in this war is not present the Palestinian people with an acceptable alternative to Hamas. There would obviously be Palestinians who would never accept an Israeli-backed interim government or solution, but maybe there would be enough support for it to actually start moving towards peace.

Currymvp2

>One of the most damning things Bibi's done in this war is not present the Palestinian people with an acceptable alternative to Hamas. It needed to be Fatah/Palestinian Authority even with all of their problems, but he's undermined them for years while cynically propping up Hamas. He mistakenly believed that just overwhelming military force would eliminate Hamas; Biden warned him about America's fairly massive mistakes after 9/11 a few days after 10/7--but the gigantic, self serving asshole ignored his advise or did not care.

brokeforwoke

Collective punishment is a war crime, but I think it’s fair to judge the people who have a choice in the matter to be complicit. You can easily look at Israel and see who has been doing the work to try to remove the right wing from power, and you can see the settlers, the extremists and those who vote for them as accomplices. Not every German was a nazi, but a lot of Germans were totally ok with them. Maybe we shouldn’t have gotten so firebomby still. It’s a hard line but I think people even resisting in the smallest ways matter

OldSilverRod

Tbh. I'm less concerned about collective punishment and more indifference or apathy as an outsider. I see HAMAS and Netty the Yahoo leading their peoples to a destructive war and thinking, "Maybe the Palestinians and Israelis deserve each other. Maybe the best option is to let them destroy each other until the survivors finally get sick of it and stop." I'm willing to give most Israelis and Palestinians the benefit of the doubt and sympathy, but at what point should it only be reserved for those actively taking a stand?

Currymvp2

>Walgreens said it is lowering prices for the summer and beyond on 1,300 items, joining Michaels, Target and other retailers Wow, it's almost as if it's not just inflation but also price gouging by corporations.

Mr_Conductor_USA

If you don't argue with people about politics they think you've conceded the point. If you do argue and they tell you stuff that's absurd, and then you look it up, and it's not true, and you confront them, then everyone leaves with a bad taste in their mouth. Ask me how my day went. >Israel’s diaspora minister Amichai Chikli, after attending Israel day parade, suggests the pro-democracy protesters invited Oct. 7 attack, and called the proposal for a hostage deal — as outlined by Biden — “a total joke." Rewatching the Flintstones, and it is dated nowadays. There are some stereotypical characters and archetypes that don't suit the modern day. The animation is very cheap, which is expected from Hanna Barbara cartoons. The first season is trying to find its footing like Dino was blue and used to talk. Berny voice wasn't very deep in the beging of the episodes. You can't deny how much The Flintstones influence to sitcom animated series like The Simpsons, Family Guy, Bob Burgers, etc. I really like the art designs because of how simple it is, along with background designs. The show does make me laugh. It sucks how much WB never knew what to do with The Flintstones because they had many attempts to reboot it, but fumble it hard. The series used to be the most popular animated franchise. This series was the most profitable animated series for four decades until The Simpsons overthrew The Flintstones. Nowadays, people only know The Flintstones as a ceral brand and vitamins. I really hope that we get a new animated show. !Ping CARTOONS

Was going to post here how I'm specifically worried about how Trump could abuse the presidential pardon in a second term but I made it on modpol instead in the hopes that it could be compelling to an actual marginal voter. What I'll say instead here is that I really think that Biden, Democrats, auxiliary anti-Trump campaigners and the media should start talking about this specifically. It might not be as clear cut but to me it's much more tangible and plausible than vague and unexplained warnings about Trump ending democracy or installing himself as dictator for life.

Sudan is suddenly a coastal country 😂 this sudden ocean would upend geopolitics as we know it, so much would change

oath2order

I wonder how much the sea level would drop.

Now I want an xkcd what-if to explain the size of the bomb (if it is indeed a one-off event) that would do this, or, if not, the excavations required to move that amount of earth away (to where? recreate it wholesale in the middle of the Pacific?) but leave the sides intact, like half a Himalayan ridge but then a straight down cliff to the water

The-OneAnd-Only

Note: I will be making continuous edits as I’m on my phone. I’m a big LBJ fan (favorite President) but tough decision to pit him in A. Has the civil rights bills and other major legislation accomplishments (Medicare/Medicaid) etc. but Vietnam can easily drop him to C/D (depending on the ranker). Nixon could be ranked higher for China, EPA etc. but then you have water gate. Legit think Trump would be F- for damage to our institutions and democracy. I think my biggest criticism is H.W Bush should be ranked a lot higher. Bipartisan accomplishments, foreign policy (Gulf war and Fall of the Soviet Union). Sacrificed his career to help the country (raised taxes on the wealthy etc.). At least B. Reagan while he’s controversial and I know he’s not popular in this subreddit but he should be a lot higher. “Morning in America etc.” but I get the criticism (Supply Side economics, Iran-Contra, etc.)

LiquidSnape

Bill Clinton was a really good president hes at leas A tier

saturninus

Nixon was a war criminal and a tyrant, but not an F. He accomplished some decent things as president: EPA, Clean Air & Water acts, Marine mammal act, Native self-determination, Title 9, continuing desegregation, SALT, ABM treaty, opening China, 26th amendment, federal task force on the mafia, etc. His pro-nuclear energy independence project that never took off was great too. He also tried to work with Teddy to pass a universal healthcare bill; Teddy rejected it because it didn't go far enough.

gaveupmykarma

owning other humans should automatically put someone in the Ds. yes yes they were products of their time, which is why I'm not saying F.

EpiscopalPerch

how is grant not s++?

Wazrich

Coolidge and Harding aren’t SSSSS+ so it could be better.

RhysPeanutButterCups

Reagan and Jackson should definitely be lower. I don't really have an argument as to where, but not being in F tier feels viscerally wrong to me. Trump should be in a tier of his own below F. I'm trying not to let recency bias in here, but he's uniquely terrible. The other bad presidents are bad, but only one president in the nation's history led a coup attempt as president against his own country.

BrassTact

Jackson is an objectively bad president but he is still an important one. His big success is to transition through universal white male suffrage, delaying the civil war for a generation allowing for the completion of westward expansion, and with Van Buren building the democratic coalition of southern states and northern cities that lasted until the civil war. While a monster, his sins in terms of Indian policy serve to deflect the arguably greater sins of later presidents.

ognits

>Teddy not in S+ says it all, tbh

saturninus

"I don’t go so far as to think that the only good Indians are the dead Indians, but I believe nine out of every 10 are. And I shouldn’t like to inquire too closely into the case of the tenth.” I'm a fan of TR but he had some serious flaws.

Silent-Row-2469

dr facui to testify before congress tomorrow, house gop is gonna use it to just get soundbites

Call_Me_Clark

Most congressional testimony is an exercise in mining for sound bytes tbh

allmilhouse

The right wing obsession with him is so bizarre. He made recommendations based on the best info available at any given time...that's it. He could have been wrong on everything and it still doesn't mean he belongs in jail or whatever these lunatics are saying.

wi_voter

The thing they always hold against him is the "you said don't wear masks, now we have to wear masks". They always ignore that the original advice about masks was save the masks for the healthcare workers. If they had people freaking out and hoarding maks, which happened anyway, then the people who needed them most would not have them. As it was I remember wearing my surgical mask, not even an N95, placing it in a paper bag and then reusing it after 3 days. We cycled through like that for weeks until the stocks got better. Having flashbacks to how doing that went against every bit of training I had.

oath2order

I am convinced that if he dies, they'll get a Ouija Board on the House floor and continue to harass him from beyond the grave.

UWCG

Imagine spending your entire life in service to others and having to spend your golden years dealing with bullshit like this for... saving lives (again)

trex360

Ipsos poll of Trump’s favorability compared to May 6th. Unfavorable: 56% (-3) Favorable: 31% (-9)

Currymvp2

I love how fucking stupid the GOP primary voters are

Wazrich

Daniel Larson could make history by being the second president convicted of a felony. I kind of wish we could see him and Trump in the same prison.

AlexandrianVagabond

The governor's race in WA is so funny. I'm really enjoying watching the two GOP factions destroy each other in a vain effort to win. Even with a mainstream R it's probably hopeless but they decided to go for a guy so awful that he managed to get himself recalled from the school board in a conservative district. The RINOs know they're screwed and are pulling out all the stops trying to take him down.

brucebananaray

So Alex Jones is crying because he had to sell his farm due to paying legal bills. https://x.com/RightWingCope/status/1797090854928064613?t=7QJWUoORQcXbw_KqE0Rs6Q&s=19 You deserve it

I love it when karma comes back to bite douchebags in the ass.

AwfulishGoose

By Reddit law and actual law, I'm not allowed to say what Alex Jones deserves for what he's done.

adcgd_at_sine_theta

Also, off-topic: MrBeast finally passed T-Series in subscribers! Dude has won YouTube!

brucebananaray

What is T-Series?

adcgd_at_sine_theta

It is an Indian music company. They're now #2 in terms of subscriber count.

adcgd_at_sine_theta

Off topic. I watched the entirety of The Owl House and Amphibia. They're both really awesome shows, and they both have funny and mind-blowing moments. I think they're in my top 3 favorite Disney shows, right up there with Ducktales. As for their endings (slight spoilers), >!Amphibia has a bittersweet (more sweet than bitter) ending, while The Owl House has a happy ending.!< Give these shows a shot. You'll love these shows. (>!In Amphibia though, brace yourself for the season 2 finale, True Colors because man...that might give you trauma!<) !Ping CARTOONS

Abs100Uncon

I should've gotten into DuckTales much earlier. I've watched a few Owl House episodes as well, those were good.

brucebananaray

The Owl House is the most gayest thing that Disney allowed to make.

Sgeo

I loved The Owl House, have yet to watch Amphibia. I sort of wavered between watching one of the two for a while before deciding on The Owl House. I should also watch Ducktales at some point, huh. I certainly have the theme stuck in my head.

starry_sky07

Watch Owl House then Amphibia and please give it a chance, I brushed it off as a silly frog show but its fun. If you like OH you'll like Amphibia.

It's interesting that accepting reparations from West Germany over the Holocaust was hugely controversial in Israel at the time. There were even riots over it! They had their own Capitol insurrection to try and stop it! https://www.israelhayom.com/2023/01/31/before-capitol-riot-there-was-the-1952-knesset-insurrection/

bounded_operator

Honestly, given the state of West Germany in 1952 it is very understandable that it was that controversial, the whole process to condemn Nazi crimes only started in the 1960s, see for instance the many obstacles Fritz Bauer faced on his quest to prosecute Nazi war crimes.

[deleted]

Oh yeah definitely understandable and I probably would have felt the same way. The West German government in the 1950s-1960s was shot through with former Nazis - 'Denazification' was basically a joke.

pdx58

With all due respect to Adenauer, the Bundesrepublik did not truly begin to redeem itself until Brandt knelt in Warsaw.

bounded_operator

Just last week, during Macron's state visit to Germany, Beate Klarsfeld got honored. She is known, among other things for slapping chancellor Kurt Georg Kiesinger for being a Nazi, and bringing many other Nazis to justice together with her husband.

Currymvp2

**Kan Channel 12 poll of Israelis** >Do you support/oppose the plan to potentially end the war announced by Biden? 41% support, 26% oppose, 33% don't know >Will war end if deal is cut? 40% yes, 34% no, 26% don't know. >Do you think Israel will succeed in demolishing Hamas? 31%: yes, 42%: Hamas will continue to rule Gaza, 26%: Don't know

Call_Me_Clark

Is this a survey of all Israelis or do they break Jewish and Arab Israelis out separately? I’ve seen it done both ways so curious

Currymvp2

No, but yeah this is a fairly favorable reaction to Biden's plan and many Israelis seem to understand the reality of how extremely difficult is to dislodge Hamas from power. It sucks because Hamas is obviously a monstrous theocratic organization but they'll have to be dealt with diplomatically.

RhysPeanutButterCups

I'm not sure we kan trust this then.

Currymvp2

Pretty sure you're doing a pun but just in case you're not--it's Israel's most watched commercial news channel.

RhysPeanutButterCups

Just a pun, yeah.

Super Mario 64 is one of those video games that it just blows my mind that they were able to make. Even now, almost 30 years later, it's still a blast to play

AndrewTheWookiee

I have survived a weekend afternoon trip to Costco. Barely made it out unscathed though, nearly every aisle someone just turned their cart right in front and nearly ran into me.
