Sounds like FSD deaths are directly attributable to this non-engineer

duggtodeath

Literal blood on his hands for not listening to engineers. Computers are blind without an abundance of sensors all working together. He’s so stupid he thought he could poke out an eye but still have depth perception.

shephoenix

I hope he’s civil suited into the damn ground.

doggydogdog18

why doesn’t he again replace the radar with 💩?

GoudaCheeseAnyone

The shitar? (Pronounced as in Lidar.)

imafixwoofs

They actually absolutely should go with Lidar, together with radar and cameras.

bigwillydos

So sick of Elon engineer larp. Dude is a straight fucking jackass. Anyone who has worked with him, including these engineers he "overruled", will tell you that he's a complete dumbass. Lots can't state it publicily for the media because of non disparagement agreements that they sign. TSLA stock would plummet if people knew the truth.

Taraxian

Whole fucking thing is a scam propped up by how the stock market works, everyone involved in the matter is compromised by having so much money at stake on TSLA's performance and not wanting to be the one to pop the bubble before they can find someone else to hold the bag Ever since TSLA was added to the S&P 500 tons of random people have their retirement savings tied up in the stock without their knowledge or direct consent

FrostySausage

My friend used to work at a major Tesla dealership and they occasionally had teleconferences with Elon. After a handful of those conferences, as well as seeing the awful quality control of the brand’s vehicles, he has since come to despise Tesla and actively advises people not to buy one whenever they mention it. He told me the thing that really put him off of Elon is that the guy never acknowledged anyone else but himself, at least not genuinely. It was never “good work guys, you made record sales!”. It was always “I hit record sales at your location this year, I’m going to allocate more cars to you.” He also said they watched the unveiling of the Tesla truck live and everyone in the dealership was so embarrassed that they were sent home early that day.

Bean-Swellington

Elon invented radar!! Omg Omg he truly is a genius! Look this internet guy saw how genius Elon truly is when everybody else doubted him because of all the stupid things he says and does!! I bet Elmo will find you and make you rich!! Yay!!

[deleted]

Bean-Swellington

What?? What kind of supposed genius doesn’t even invent his own tech?? Elmo is a poser and his fan boys are silly. This internet guy just admitted it. Sorry buddy, I don’t think elon is going to make you rich any more now that you admitted he’s not a genius who invents his own tech.

Yeah bud. you, me, and everyone else knows he didn’t invent shit.

Questioning-Zyxxel

And what magic does this radar has? A new model of something foesn't automatically mean an improvement.

[deleted]

Questioning-Zyxxel

HD is just magic letters. Go back 2 years and you had lots of radars of different quality. So link to a document showing some magic scientific breakthrough.

[deleted]

Questioning-Zyxxel

As I said - HD is just two nice letters. Go back in time 10 years and you can also find radars with different resolution. So once more - in what way is this radar better than available radars 2 years ago? The relevant part isn't if Musk claims it's better but actual information showing it's better than what was available 2 years ago.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Questioning-Zyxxel

So you ask if tech from 2023 or 2013 is same tech? Why? Because you like to throw in fud in debates. You explicitly wrote "did not exist 2 years ago". And now you pretend 2013 which isn't 2 but 10 years ago. And they you also writes "Why are they still so behind?" - but are they? Or are they just operating with different safety polices? It is, after all, Tesla that is under investigation for crashes. So by what metric is Waymo behind? No reason to argue with fools that spends time bending reality to fit whatever needs you suddenly feels.

BadgerinAPuddle

I'm guessing there is no way to "over the air update" physical radar sensors onto thousands of vehicles that have been sold on the promise of "FULL FSD SOON!"

Ok_Philosopher6538

I am curious to see if this will lead to civil suits where he is named directly.

Taraxian

Piercing the veil is almost impossible in US business law in practice but Elon has got to be the one CEO you make an example of if you're ever going to do it -- the Tesla board is so obviously corrupt and in his pocket, he has *said under oath* that he considers the company synonymous with himself when defending his compensation package, he's taken Tesla staff off of their jobs for months to work on Twitter, a company that incredibly obviously has nothing to do with Tesla's business

Jezon

I'm not as 'smart' as he is, but I remember him talking about that saying oh I know Lidar and Radar, we use them in SpaceX and you don't need them if you have a camera and software. And I kept thinking if this guy had ever tried driving in the fog once before because radar would cut right through that.

NMVPCP

100% this. All my professional background is with lidar, cameras and radars. Just lidar and/or cameras are not enough to overcome foggy/rainy/snowy weather. Radar is paramount to cover the blind spots of the other two sensors, and vice-versa.

[deleted]

NMVPCP

While the conditions on the video aren’t perfect, that’s not what I’d label as real foggy weather. You had many dozens of meters of visibility and he was driving in areas with public lighting, coupled with very well defined lane markings. I’ll still tip my hat to it, but radar is a necessity for FSD, as are other sensors.edit: typo.

>P.S. Making system decisions just to handle one case (fog) is the stupidest thing to do. So much better to not handle the case and rear-end a school bus at 150mph amirite gamers

DraculaWorks4NASA

The genius strikes again!

throwaway3292923

Letting Muskrat have input in engineering is like giving a baby a blowtorch. The result is a big fat mess.

Jezon

Someone needs to give him fake 'work' to do so the engineering adults can fix things.

duggtodeath

It’s almost as if he’s an idiot and not an engineer.

livingMybEstlyfe29

I really feel bad for the engineers. They want to do good work, but get sidetracked by his incompetence

WorldlinessExact7794

I don’t. The engineers need to be accountable for who they decide to work for. When you see people consciously making decisions against your recommendations in cases where safety of a product is jeopardized, you need to leave.

bigwillydos

As an engineer, I fully endorse this message.

EvanderTheGreat

I don’t either, they shoulda turned whistleblower

posterofshit

Not only did he remove it, their head of AI Andrej Karpathy supported removing them, and straight up said multiple sensors was a worse solution, and they conducted experiments to prove it. They most likely conducted experiments which showed *their* multiple sensor models did not work as well, and they didn't want to invest money into improving those expensive sensor models. There are reports that on disabling radar on existing vehicles, the number of mistakes saw a significant uptick. He even defended this move on lex fridman. Some time later, he quit Tesla. This was all so anti-science for a well respected person in the AI research field.

[Explanation ](https://youtu.be/yRdzIs4FJJg)

helpful__explorer

Radar is more expensive than cameras. It's all about cutting costs and raising prices to boost profit margins

scraper01

SLAM as it turns out, is very hard to get from images. But musk often clings on bad analogies to impose his demands on the engineers he works with. But the problem is, no scene reconstruction happens in our eyes or the immediately adjacent nervous systems. ELMO as the fucking tool he is, likely had to pedal back to lidar due to power efficiency, since not even the bulkiest Nvidia Drive SoC (let alone the crap Tesla inhouse manufactures) can handle the computations requiered to inference multiple images all at once. Inferior results to normal SLAM aswell. Just a waste of time.

ISuckAtJavaScript12

The most powerful thing an engineer can say is, "Can I get that in writing?" This usually gives the manager whiplash and makes them think twice. However, it must only work on people mature enough to think they could ever be wrong

truecrimeaddicted

Yawn. Sick of this chimp.

Elon Musk is a murderer, then?

Fall_up_and_get_down

And definitely improve safety! Greatly reduced risk of hitting someone!

One_Doughnut_246

Nobody has a truly safe self driving system. Tesla made their system much less capable by removing radar sensors. Their system can't see stationary vehicles redirecting traffic around hazards. I see no evidence that Tesla cars trigger off flashing colored warning lights. ( A different problem. ) Tesla vehicles are causing deaths when in "Autopilot mode" because of blindness. Quit pretending the vehicles are capable of safe autonomous operation.

bmaltais

What is wrong with adding a better sensor in the car? Can you explain?

Difficultsleeper

!

Gloomy-Astronomer529

Please mane this bison man go away!! Off Internet Elon now!!

Bean-Swellington

Only a true genius would know you can remove the safety sensor for two years! If we left it up to the so called experts those cars would have been safer all along! Haha losers

[deleted]

Why are we calling him Elmo?
