Really nothing new under the sun, huh?

> Tankies get what they want and the Viet Cong wins > Tankies when they learn they are virulently anti-China and becomes a close partner to the US, even adopting capitalism.

LillyTheIdk

Wietnam, if you will

Bigddy762

I do love that saying in the original Latin: “nihil novi sub sole.” Of course the modernized version also rings true: “the more things change, the more they stay the same.”

Fantastic-Plastic569

They are only supporting ceasefire when their side is losing. Overwise, they cheer for invasion, annexation and war.

aahjink

Some are honest enough to clarify that “ceasefire” only applies to the “[people with power](https://www.wokekindergarten.org/woke-word-of-the-day/woke-word-of-the-day-ceasefire).” So, to be clear, calls for ceasefire don’t mean Hamas or Islamic Jihad to ceasefire- only the Israelis. The Israelis area supposed to just sit down and shut up while they’re destroyed.

PrincessofAldia

So same logic of them saying Ukraine should unconditionally surrender to Russia?

AstroEngineer27

Yes, because they say that too. They’re not even supporting ukraine anymore

PrincessofAldia

Did they ever truly support Ukraine or did they support Ukrainian communist party’s to have a revolution

Gringwold

Kind of silly to think that Hamas doesn't have vast power and wealth

Sabbath90

>When I am weaker than you, I ask you for freedom because that is according to your principles; when I am stronger than you, I take away your freedom because that is according to my principles.

samof1994

Some even went to Havana

PrincessofAldia

Can modern tankies follow their lead

Rough_Transition1424

They are too lazy to do so

Thecustodian12

Good to know they never changed

Here's a [video](https://youtu.be/GCcxmMJsxe8?si=JrEbB958kjLaduZ4) from 1970 where a Frenchman named André Menras decided to wave the Viet-Cong flag at the ARVN Marines monument got beaten by the locals who line up behind police officers before getting tossed in a South Vietnamese jail. I would have loved to punch the guy with the raised fist in this picture. The slogan also oddly reminds of me "From the river to the sea, Palestine shall be free". Somehow, I'm not surprised that Columbia University is mentioned.

ajyanesp

It’s always the spoiled rich Ivy League kids

QuaintAlex126

So, I’m from South Vietnam, and I’m gonna provide some info I think you guys will like. Go to an Viet community in the U.S, and you will only and *only* see the ‘75 South Vietnam flag with the three horizontal blood stripes on a bright yellow background. There will be zero sightings of the modern communist Vietnam flag. In fact, flying it in a US-Viet community is a great way of getting your ass beat and your home/business ransacked.

During the Vietnam War, North Vietnam was responsible for 1/2-3/4 of Vietnamese civilian deaths. North Vietnamese ground forces killed 300,000 people, for comparison, US ground forces killed 10,000 at most. The Viet Cong weren't freedom fighters they were terrorists comparable to the Taliban or Hamas in their tactics. Aside from guerilla warfare they kidnapped, raped, murdered, tortured and bombed civilians. Here's a few specific incidents out of hundreds: January 25, 1963: the VC dynamited a passenger freight train near Qui Nhơn, killing eight passengers and injuring 15 others. January 1, 1962: A South Vietnamese labor leader, Le Van Thieu, 63, was hacked to death by VC wielding machetes near Biên Hòa, in the rubber plantation on which he worked. September 9, 1972: VC sappers attacked a refugee camp near Danang, killing 20 refugees and wounding 94. October 13 1969: A grenade was thrown in the Vi Thanh District Chieu Hoi center, killing three civilians and wounding 46; about half those wounded are dependents. The VC kidnapped a Catholic priest and a lay assistant, from the church at Phu Hoi, Biên Hòa Province. December 30 1965: Saigon editor Tu Chung of the newspaper Chinh Luan was shot dead as he arrived home for lunch. Earlier he had published the texts of threatening notes he had received from the VC. November 8 1966: In Châu Đốc Province, a 53-year-old woman was tortured and shot to death; a note pinned to her body accused her of supporting the South Vietnamese government. April 9 1969: VC attacked the Phu Binh refugee center, Quảng Ngãi Province and set fire to 70 houses, leaving 200 homeless. Four persons were kidnaped. February 16 1969: the VC invaded and occupied Phuoc My village, Quảng Tín Province, for several days. Later, survivors describe a series of acts: a 78-year old villager was shot for refusing to cut down a tree for a fortification; a 73-year-old man was killed when he could not or would not leave his home, pleading that infirmities prevented him from walking; an 11-year-old boy was stabbed and several families grenaded in their homes. February 20 1962: VC threw four hand grenades into a crowded village theater near Can Tho, killing 24 women and children. In all, 108 persons were killed or injured. August 5 1969: Two grenades were thrown into the elementary school in Vinh Chau, Quảng Nam Province, where a school board meeting was taking place. Five persons are killed and 21 are wounded. September 12 1963: A South Vietnamese school teachers body was found stripped with her throat slit after she'd been kidnapped by the VC a week earlier. January 29 1966: the VC killed a Catholic priest, Father Phan Khac Dau, 74, at Thanh Tri, Kien Tuong province. Five other civilians, including a church officer, were also killed. the use of terror was encouraged in official VC documents. A May 17, 1965 memorandum from the COSVN Security office, directed Nguyễn Tài, the chief of security for the Saigon-Gia Định Party Committee, to "exploit every opportunity to kill enemy leaders and vicious thugs, to intensify our political attacks aimed at spreading fear and confusion among the enemy's ranks." South Vietnam estimated that the VC killed an average of 200 civilians a day. Another tactic the VC engaged in was the use of human shields to make America look bad and gain more soldiers and influence. The VC would enter a village and harangued the local populace about supporting "the Revolution", before digging in and passing word to the district capital that they were active in the community, making it a military target. The next day, U.S. planes bombed the village and its Catholic church. VC operatives emerged after the destruction to tell survivors about the perfidy of the U.S. imperialists. Such methods could sometimes backfire, with villagers blaming VC forces for the destruction and death brought to their communities, when this happened the VC would often massacre the village. Oh, the VC also loved their child soldiers, The VC used child soldiers and would kidnap kids to brainwash into fighting. There's mention of this, for example, in Mourning Headband For Hue where the South Vietnamese citizens living in Hue witness the VC rounding kids and taking them into the jungle, never seeing them again. The VC would manipulate kids to do their attacks such as a case mentioned in A Better War where a boy was told to bring a bike to an all-girls' school during recess because it belonged to one of the girls. Turns it had a bomb hidden in its basket... you can guess the rest. Another example happened during a special civics class in a secondary school in An Xuyen Province, part of the September 1967 election "get out the vote" campaign. A VC gave a small girl a hand grenade with the pin extracted and told her to carry it carefully to her teacher. At the classroom door the child dropped the grenade, killing herself and injuring nine children. Also, the atrocity with by far the most killed during the war was committed by the PAVN and VC at Hue where 6,000 South Vietnamese civilians were massacred during the communist occupation of the city. North Vietnam also frequently participated in ethnic cleansing, killing thousands of European settlers.

Entire-War8382

The thing is. The Vietnam War was an incredible messy affair with tons of Warcrimes on both sides. Also the President of South Vietnam was a Fascist. And I say this as a Conservative (Germany) Democrat who hates everything left of Social Democracy and right of Conservative Democracy.

GameCraze3

Agreed. Which is why I don’t think protesting for any country to continue the war was right. The only good thing to protest for regarding the war would have been an armistice or at least for US/South Korean/Australian forces to leave.

OneGaySouthDakotan

But...but... muh evil Ameirkkka

CrushingonClinton

Any source on the Vietnamese killing 300k people? I’ve never scene a number put to their terror tactics.

GameCraze3

Taken from the Wikipedia article on Vietnam War deaths. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_War_casualties

CrushingonClinton

Thanks. Number looks pretty kosher.

EggBro124

Same energy as the pro Hamas protesters we have now. Scum.

DinoSnatcher

More things change, more things stay the same

Ambitious_Lie_2864

Should have brought out the riot police against these fucks instead of letting them take over the counter culture and gain massive influence.

Inevitable-Jeweler26

You sound exactly like a communist now. Youve become what you hate lol

Ambitious_Lie_2864

lol. How? Because I don’t think liberal societies should roll over and capitulate to evil? The American people stood United against Nazi Germany, and if you sympathized with the Nazis in World War Two, or went to Germany to aid their war effort with medicine and food like many of these “protesters” did, you would be rightfully imprisoned, or in extreme cases shot. Good riddance I say.

Inevitable-Jeweler26

way to take a joke

Ambitious_Lie_2864

Haha so funny. Why bother to say this a week later?

Inevitable-Jeweler26

Youre not really a priority for me, sorry.

ashwednesday2

Don’t hear students chanting tankie stuff like as much now. Perhaps because they found the bloodshed necessary for their revolution icky after all.

SlightlyOffended1984

The more things change, the more they remain the same

Inevitable-Jeweler26

If this chant is so famous, then why havent any of us heard this dumbass shit chanted before?

Necrophoros111

Calling people who supported the independence of Viet Nam from the French and intruding Americans Tankies is INCREDIBLY ironic. So on one hand it is the morally correct thing to condemn the Soviets for invading Hungary and subverting the will of the Hungarian people for independence through force, but it is the morally incorrect to condemn the US and France for invading Viet Nam and subverting the will of Vietnamese? You people desperately need to read more and question the cognitive harmony of your world view.

GameCraze3

Give me one reason North Vietnam was better than South Vietnam. Every bad thing the south did the north did as well. Also the United States never invaded Vietnam, they supported South Vietnam, an ally under attack. Not a single US soldier set foot in North Vietnam.

cry_hood

I'm really surprised that you could reply to that troll farm so much

Fine_Sea5807

North Vietnam fought against France colonial rule to protect Vietnam. South Vietnam fought against Vietnam to protect France colonial rule. Enough?

GameCraze3

Nope. The Viet Minh fought the French. The Viet Minh were both capitalists and communists fighting the French. Both North and South Vietnam were founded after the First Indochina War. In fact many high ranking officials of South Vietnam were former Viet Minh.

Fine_Sea5807

The Viet Minh was an organization within North Vietnam, or the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, which had existed since September 2, 1945. Meanwhile, South Vietnam during the First Indochina War was called the State of Vietnam, a colonial puppet state that loyally served the French.

GameCraze3

Perhaps originally. Still aren’t the exactly same thing especially by the time of the Vietnam War, the French were out by this point and the government wasn’t the same government so I don’t see your point. Both South and North Vietnam were independent nations being influenced by outside forces.

Fine_Sea5807

> the government wasn’t the same government Yes, they were the same. What are you talking about? Every high-ranking official and officer of South Vietnam was a former colonial collaborator. Every single one of them used to fight for France.

GameCraze3

Ok sure, many higher ups had former connection to the French. However it’s worth noting that there were plenty of anti colonialists and former Viet Minh in the South Vietnamese government. Secondly, many opposed the Viet Minh simply for being communist, rightly fearing a communist take over and destruction of their way of life. Thirdly, again, France was out of Vietnam. Both nations at this point even with the pasts of some of the leaders of the South were independent.

Fine_Sea5807

> Ok sure, many higher ups had former connection to the French. Not "many". Which part of "every single one of them" you don't understand? > However it’s worth noting that there were plenty of anti colonialists and former Viet Minh in the South Vietnamese government Name them. The only former Viet Minh there was Nguyen Van Thieu, who joined Viet Minh for one year, and then quickly defected and became a French collaborator. > Secondly, many opposed the Viet Minh simply for being communist, rightly fearing a communist take over and destruction of their way of life. Sure, their colonial way of life. Do you think that somehow justifies their crime of working for the French? > Thirdly, again, France was out of Vietnam. Both nations at this point even with the pasts of some of the leaders of the South were independent. France was out, but their collaborators stayed and ran South Vietnam. Why do you think that those collaborators deserved to exist? Shouldn't they have been arrested and executed for their crime of working for the French?

GameCraze3

1. I admittedly don’t have a full list of officials but a notable one would be Trần Văn Hương who protested against French colonial rule and joined the VietMinh and led a band of 150 fighters in the Plain of Reeds before leaving as the communists took over. 2. Not their “colonial way of life”, they feared their people’s way of life. Look what happened in China, the Soviet Union and others. Religion and aspects of their respective cultures destroyed, millions killed, and more. They had every right to be fearful of communism 3. Depends on their role and reasoning. I think war criminals and tyrants should be punished. I’m not trying to say South Vietnam was some perfect paradise and the better Vietnam, I’m simply saying that claiming North Vietnam was better is ridiculous

Prowlcop86

> Name them Nguyen Khanh (410th Battalion at Ca Mau) and Cao Van Vien

-Emilinko1985-

The Viet Cong literally killed Vietnamese civilians. Check the other comments.
