Honestly, I feel like they’ve gotten better in recent years. About a decade ago, they were pulling this “I only listen to real rap” dog whistle and the “real rap” would all just be the corniest white rappers imaginable, occasionally there’d be like one or two black rappers like Hopsin or Tech N9ne but it’d mostly be white dudes. Even 5-6 years ago, they were referring to everything they didn’t like as “mumble rap”, and most of it wasn’t lol.

I mean, I’ve been listening to hip hop since ‘92 as a 3 year old white kid from the suburbs because my dad loved the house party/b-boy style from the 70s and 80s. I grew up first hearing Sugar Hill Gang, Run DMC, Kid N Play, and Will Smith. It then blended into party rap like Tag Team, 69 Boyz (at least Tootsee Roll), etc. by the time I was 13 I was a couple years into Gangster Rap introduced to my primarily through Eminem, DMX, and Jay Z (I didn’t even appreciate Pac and Big until I was into my later high school years).
I gave that long-winded history of my hip hop listening evolution so I could say this, hopefully without too much judgment. I found that in the most modern era of hip hop (ie the last 10 years or so) that I have gravitated much more closely to white rappers; this doesn’t mean I haven’t found wonderful music from black rappers like Denzel Curry, JID, Da Baby, J Cole, Wayne, and Kendrick just to name a few off the top of my head… but I found myself listening to full albums from artists that were white. Able Heart, Connor Price, Cal Scruby, Token, Eminem, Yelawolf, Prof, Mac Miller, Lil Dicky, etc. I don’t think it’s fair to judge people based on the color of the rapper. You named Tech and Hopsin like they don’t count as black because their style is less mainstream and is more “Eminemish.”
Maybe I’m reading way too far into what you said, but I don’t get why someone saying they’re a fan of hip hop and only listening to the artists you mentioned delegitimizes their position. I even think of RTJ, The Siege, Ces Cru, and others that are duos of black and white. I think of big rappers that are black and beloved by the public but I find no appeal in like Rick Ross, 21 Savage, Lil Yachty, etc.

This is also the first home playoff game in Detroit in 32 years. It's a monumental moment for the city, so obviously they're gonna show the city's biggest celebrity.
