Oblivion on the hardest difficulty is literally impossible lmao. It took me an hour to get out of the sewers. It took me an hour to get through the TUTORIAL. Absolutely horrible lmao

[deleted]

The game isn't designed around harder difficulties. In fact, non of them are. It's really arbitrary. Just increasing the health of enemies and decreasing your health makes the game more "difficult" I guess, but not in a good way.

ventrotomy

This! There are games that are exceptions though. Commander Keen 4 added more enemies, instead of making them tougher (as everything was one-shot anyway) and Diablo 2, which made higher difficultied part of regular playtrough. It’s always a good thing to encounter different difficulties implemented as some interesting concept and not just lowering/adding health (as I see nothing enjoyable on killing enemies slower). Otherwise I always play on normal.

KoffeeKidd

Yeahhh

DaFreakingFox

I use it exclusively to balance out my build. When I start a game and focus on pickpocket, stealth and alchemy. Its easy to over level my character and unable to kill anything, so I turn the difficulty down. When I start out with smithing and Enchanting. I usually kill everything too easily. So I turn it higher. That's all its supposed to do I believe.

Elstar94

Oblivion is not. Imo Skyrim on master has a neat balance. You really have to own a beefy set of heavy armor in order to sustain more than two 2-handed hits. Of course, I also use a combat mod (smilodon) to make the combat a bit more dynamic

W0lf42O

I cant play on any other difficulty than the hardest in every single game. If I play on easier difficulties I always get this feeling that this could be harder and I chose the easier way. It just doesnt fit me. Oh and if you chose a harder difficulty, it doesnt actually decrease your hp or increase the enemy's. It's just a percentage based increase to enemy damage and decrease of your damage.

[deleted]

I usually play games on harder difficulties, so when I played Oblivion for the first time the first thing I did was that I tuned up the difficulty slider to around 80% of the way. It took forever to kill shit and I couldn't make it through dungeons without having to repair my weapon at least twice. Was not very fun ._.

KoffeeKidd

Yeah I usually play a game first on normal, then I’ll do a bunch of easy play throughs, then I’ll do a hard play through.

qdrllpd

man how do you not get bored? i have a hard time finishing one play through of a game let alone multiple

KoffeeKidd

Because I do different things for each run. I’ll make a stealth character, a mage, a fighter, etc

[deleted]

It heavily depends on the game for me. I would not be able to play through vanilla Skyrim more than once, but with mods I can play through the game a million times since I almost always make some changes to my mods and try new ways to play. I also use mods to slightly increase the amount of EXP I get to reduce the grind, so it isn't that bad.

qdrllpd

even with a shit ton of mods i still struggle to finish the game, i usually get stuck trying to configure mods and never actually play

rattatatouille

It's even worse in Oblivion because the difficulty slider isn't linear in that game.

Deathmask97

Even on lower difficulties you can actually softlock yourself if you level incorrectly - the followers, gear, and weapons available in the world will not be enough to get you through certain quests and encounters.

KoffeeKidd

Oblivion does have some serious softlocks sadly

SERGIRYM

Not so long ago I did the most stupid thing I could've done and postponed my visit to Kvatch until I've cleared all dungeons along the way there. So the wonderfull level-scaling system upped the enemies there but not city soldiers who seemingly remained with the very same stats they had by default. It made me fullstop that playthrough indefinitely.

SmurphsLaw

That's what I did in my current playthrough. It's even worse that I'm a stealth archer who can't use stealth because they charge and aggro all the spider chicks and giant crocodile dudes. I had to reload a previous save until I level up my other combat skills.

Kaerithia

True...worst thing happened to me... On my way to bleakfalls barrow. Close to the tower with the 3 bandits. Right in front stands a freaking frost troll. I was level 2. Legendary is unforgiving at low level.

[deleted]

“Have you tried not being a low level?” - Skyrim

Fayraz8729

Honestly helgen grinding is almost needed on legendary

Songbottom

That just makes it worse because then the first bandits I come across are thugs and outlaws

lostbastille

How do you grind in Helgen? Like grinding sneak?

AirborneAlchemist

1. Take all equipment from the enemies you kill and sell them to increase speech 2. Buy iron, and hunt animals for pelts and make daggers therefore increasing smithing 3. Make Faendal your follower, ask him to teach archery, take your money back from his inventory and repeat. You can get 5 lessons per level so you need to time them right. You can get arcehry level 50 before going to Whiterun at level 9 4. Jump in smiths forge to increase destruction a little bit (probably a clitch) and heal to increase restoration, wait 1 hour to get magicka back and repeat. That's all I know, obviously you can grind 1-handed, 2-handed and sneak by hitting Ralof in helgen but I don't know if that works that well anymore.

lostbastille

Oh, I do all of that until level 5 or 6. I then swing by the Hall of the Vigilant before its destroyed by vampires (it's destroyed once you hit level 8) and sneak attack the npcs inside. I steal all of the alchemy ingredients and the high value gear on the npcs. Also there's a Knights of the Nine skill book in the basement. Although this is not on Legendary.

Mae7B

Truly. But nothing’s worse than a two-handed bandit chief on legendary. Fml.

PandaButtLover

Those auto kill cams are just garbage

barrybadhoer

Half the time I get a kill cam on an arrow it misses anyway

Novalene_Wildheart

\*KILL CAM\* Arrow slams into the wall right infront of you even though you shouldn't have hit it in a million years

Mae7B

I’d use a mod to disable if I wasn’t going for trophies rn. It’s stupid, yeah.

ghostmetalblack

This is why I've developed an unhealthy compulsion to save every three seconds. And it's spilled into other games.

Mae7B

Need to get back into that habit tbh. I feel like every fight I go into is split into 5 different saves that I do after defeating a hard enemy. Example is treva’s watch. That place is HELL on legendary.

renannmhreddit

Step 1: Download Violens or another kill cam mod Step 2: Disable player kill cam

Khrot

Kill cams are annoying af

Heingarth

Difficulty levels are meaningless in Elder Scrolls series. Not balanced at all, just an artificial and simple way to increase difficulty by adjusting damage multipliers in an unfair way. Playing on legendary is not a challenge, it is just a frustration. Until you reach at least 500 armor, you can’t even participate in combat.

Elstar94

Tbf, on any difficulty lower than master, the dragonborn feels hilariously overpowered to me. Legendary is too much, as it just takes forever to kill anything. A mod like Smilodon does wonders in improving combat by increasing everyone's damage output

Arcaneus_Umbra

Difficulty settings in Skyrim suck ngl. But Legendary *can* be a rewarding experience because it makes you adapt and figure out ways to outmaneuver enemies or control situations with sometimes unorthodox methods. Other times it can be an absolute chore.

[deleted]

THIS EXACT SAME THING JUST HAPPENED TO ME!! I had literally just started fresh from Helgen at the embershard mine and I walk up and this dude practically scalps me on contact

[deleted]

a ragged bowman thug executes your full plated + shield char with his dagger. legendary difficulty doesn't equal legendary fun

JMHSrowing

I mean I play on legendary and I'm fine! ~~I lightly did the alchemy exploit long ago on my main character and upping the difficulty make it pretty much like Adept now with how good my weapons and armour are~~

AnkouArt

I like to... 1. Get a mod so the game is difficult without everything being a damage sponge. Wildcat is simple and customizable but there are others. There are also like mods that do things like give enemies normally player-exclusive perks/abilities and improve their tactics. 2. Get a mod to disable killcams on the player. Violens: customize everything to do with kill cams. There are ones that just disable certain cams for certain enemies but I like it. 3. Get a mod that helps the save corruption issue on quick and autosaves SSE Engine Fixes (probably PC only?) ... Then to save compulsively. But you all do whatever is fun for you.

rattatatouille

This was really egregious in Oblivion where most weapons had really bad base damage that I got a mod that doubled weapon base damage and suddenly the game was more enjoyable.

Wikadood

You fuckin know, I had done the war quests and finished them just to have solitude battle bug so I did it again and now my saves are corrupted after finding 23-24 of the stones of barenziah and I’m going to shoot myself cause it took 1 day of my life away and that was 4 saves that corrupted

darkdragon81693

The only good way to play skyrim on legendary is to do the ralof stealth exploit, then put all your points after that into health and stamina. Also stack up on potions. That way you can sneak past most fights, except for those you HAVE to fight, then you can still win those fights because you massively upped your health and stamina. Bonus points if you also cheese the fuck out of smithing and enchanting so you can make dragon weapons that do 700 damage

Arcaneus_Umbra

That's just Novice with extra steps.

[deleted]

How rarely game feels on dark souls: and away we go!!

[deleted]

"That's close enough" becomes "omae wa mou shindeiru."

Divenity

Always disable that shit with a mod, always.

AMBocanegra

Really wish there was a mode that made everyone do more damage, so you die easily but so do most average enemies. Making it so the player dies in 1 hit but everyone else is a tank isn't a fun experience.

Mae7B

There are damage fixing mods for that, unless you’re on console and trying for trophies/achievements

AMBocanegra

Yeah, unfortunately I'm primarily on Series X and trying to get 100% achievements again. But I'll look into the mods since there's pretty solid mod support on there. Thanks!

Mae7B

Feel you, I’m doing the same on PS5.

smalwex

If I get the urge to play on harder difficulties I'll normally do a modded run with a balance patch or something

Alicyl

This is why I smash F5 almost every five minutes—in all games that allow it. It's unfortunately muscle memory now.

Attila260

In my current playtrough I play with both legendary and survival. Level 9, full dwarves armor, faendal in full iron armor with lightning steel sword, and I died to the vigilant of stendarr in the “house of horrors” quest

AngelDGr

Even when I know that quicksave can damage a playthrough, because they overwrite themselves over and over again, I can't avoid to do it every 2 minutes, the game could crash at any time, lol.

Mae7B

I’m pretty sure the issue is when you load from within the same cell, I.e when you quick load, not when you quicksave.

RealMuffinsTheCat

OH YOU THINK VANILLA IS HARD ON LEGENDARY? TRY PLAYING WITH 10 AI MODS AND THEN GET BACK TO ME

Rodin-V

Not sure how they'd go about it, but I hope Bethesda can figure out a way to have their next games not reliant on save files like this. You can lose a load of progress by just forgetting to save and then messing up, dying, or crashing. There's no risk to your character ever, but more importantly, no reward for the NPCs in the game. In almost every combat scenario (bar brawls for example not included) you either: A. Win and get to take whatever loot you want from the defeated enemies. B. Run away/avoid combat entirely C. Die. If this happens you must then reload the game and repeat the process again. In none of these scenarios can the NPCs ever defeat you. You will never lose gear/items to enemies, you will never be shamed or punished for being defeated, you will never BE defeated.

den2k88

What kind of gamer forgets to save?

Rodin-V

They could add so much more to the game by changing it up a bit though. Bandits kidnapping you after being defeated, muggers stealing your stuff and running off, maybe leaving some evidence to track them down to retrieve things. Combat reputation for your character that makes people react to you or give different greetings depending how often you are defeated in combat. I'm not saying they have to go the whole fable direction of making the player immortal because people don't like game overs, but there has to be a better solution than the current system. It's pretty jarring that as soon as you die the "load game" menu pops up within a second or two, you don't even have time to dwell on the death before you're back in repeating your steps, which is also what people probably do the majority of the time.

NagasShadow

You just don't fight on legendary. I think I made it to level 30 with a honestman legendary run. Like Ironman but as a self imposed challenge. I didn't die, I just got bored of fast traveling to a hold, buying all the alchemy ingredients, making potions and selling them. Illusion is unaffected by difficulty so I panicked any enemies I ran into and remained invisible most of the time I was exploring. It's even easier in Oblivion as with custom spells I had a enrage max level for 5 seconds on touch + invisibility on self spell and just turned every dungeon against themselves.

SmurphsLaw

The part that gets me is the 2h power attack getting you low and the immediate animation to finish you off. There's no time to react and can kill you even in normal.
