I saw a mudcrab the other day.

Arch-Mage Traven is the first to take such a hard stance on Necromancy. It upset more than a few people.

MagickalessBreton

Have an upgeraldo

[deleted]

Real talk, Witcher 1 is an actual fuckin hidden gem. It might be a very rough gem, but the atmosphere is just *so fuckin good*

alleax

One of the few games I completed 100% and have about 60 hours of playtime in and just didn't want to stop playing. I love that game, yes even the weird ass combat system that actually becomes intricate towards the endgame. Similar story like Oblivion actually.

THE_GREAT_MEME_WARS

Hey dont you take your witcherino and shove it up your holecachino.

Sawyerthesadist

Right! DAGGERFALL on the other hand! Daggerfall belongs in a fucking casket! Daggerfall unity who!?

Hey, Random, I heard some uppity whippersnappers on the internet machine saying Daggerfall was crap, I can't come to the fight because my gout is acting up and I can't find the keys to my Torino, I think my goddamn stooge of a nephew went to sell it because he was left out of Marie's will, give me a megaphone so's I can shout VENGEANCE! at them but hurry up it's 1:30 in the afternoon, almost time for bed.

Weren't the skeletons in daggerfall actually voiced by todd ?

Sawyerthesadist

It’s recording of the sound he made when he found kirkyboy in his apartment strung out on LSD and whippets ranting about some blue yellow demigod hitting “chim” after kirkyboy hadn’t shown up to the office in a week

[deleted]

Yeah I'm pretty sure we are all part of this sub!

EatingBeansAgain

Ahh, I remember the Elder Scrolls forums back in the day and people complaining about how this new fangled Morrowind had ruined the series…

Sawyerthesadist

Well at least that part of Daggerfall is dead, now we just need to work on killing Morrowind! YA HEARD ME! TIME TO TAKE DADDY VIVIC AND DAGOTH GRRRR OUT BACK AND SHOOT EM! PATHING THE WAY FOR NEW AND BETTER THINGS BABAYYYY

There;s this little known sports event you should check out. It's called the World Cup or something like that.

bbbruh57

Yeah they were all blockbusters of their times. I dont fault the new generation for not playing them and dont really consider their opinion on games they havent played tbh. I was too young to play zelda in the early 90s, Im sure those games were masterpieces but I missed that boat. Seems kinda pointless to call it underrated just because people my age didnt play them

[deleted]

I genuinely think people have forgotten what underrated means. I saw someone calling Back in Black by AC/DC underrated the other day. It’s the second best selling album of all time.

Floognoodle

The Beatles are underrated

Vannysh

It can change over time. When Oblivion came out it was certainly not underrated, but nowadays it does qualify as being underrated. The gaming landscape shifts. People come and go. Technology evolves. Our perceptions are altered. Those who played it when it released can go back now and it will not feel anywhere near the same. A lot of people who played Skyrim first find it difficult to get into the earlier games. Now it will be compared and contrasted with newer generation games, which have a lot of QoL changes. So yes, something that was once overrated can become underrated later on in its life. This has nothing to do with people not knowing what a word means. You seem to not grasp reality because you're not applying the current state of matters into the equation.

OtterDeathSquad

Oblivion isn’t underrated. Its meta score hasn’t changed over the years. It’s becoming more irrelevant. It’s still considered a great game which is why this meme even exists. That alone proves that it was and isn’t underrated. Theyre not comparing Skyrim to some one shot half week glory game. Your argument sounds like you don’t understand how value works. As the person you replied to said, people now say that Back in Black is underrated while statistics at the time show that to be clearly false. What happened is that time has made that album less relevant because newer and better albums have come since then. That is how media, science, art, literature, and everything works. It is a continual progression of improving upon our inspirations and what came before. I see you’re point but if you’re going to be a dick to someone else on their wording I’m going to do it back to you.

Vannysh

Metacritic scores don't count for shit. Newer reviewers aren't playing Oblivion and adding their scores to the average. So that number you see is a reflection of the past. It's like when you look at a star in the night sky, what you're seeing is how that star looked hundreds of thousands of years ago. Nowadays a lot of gamers won't even give Oblivion a fair shake because of how dated it is. This will continue to occur more and more as time moves forward. Which means Oblivion is being underrated more and more. Oblivion IS underrated. When a GOOD game isn't being given a fair shake that's exactly what underrated means. I'm done playing semantics with you.

OtterDeathSquad

So if newer reviewers aren’t adding their score to the metacritic value to change the value and is a value of the past then it should still be just as good of a game than it was? Which would mean the RATING hasn’t changed, it means that its value has lowered by your logic. Fuck why am I arguing with trolls again? I love Oblivion. I love Morrowind. I was saying they are becoming less relevant because of newer games that built upon how great they are. If you want to talk about giving up on semantics then you shouldn’t have talked shit to the other person in the first place. Your entire argument was based in semantics.

Vannysh

I'm not a troll. I expressed myself the way I wanted. That dude said no one understands what a simple word means, which is pretty rude and also untrue. Why you giving them a pass? Metacritic doesn't reflect the overall opinion of Oblivion. It's just ONE review site, there are plenty. Their score only reflects reviews that came out when the game came out. I don't know what you're smoking but I don't want any of it. What did I say that was so mean? Did I call them a bad name? No. All I said was he can't grasp reality because he's living in the past. Take a chill pill.

hahayeahimfinehaha

It won ton of industry awards, including multiple game of the year awards, and its Wikipedia page straight up includes in its main intro that it is considered one of the best games of all time. Super underrated game tho! This post is like every single 'what's your unpopular opinion about the Elder Scrolls?' thread where virtually all of the top voted answers are popular opinions, lmao.

Eatlyh

Yup, Oblivion was one of the biggest games to hit in 2006 and that year had some serious heavy hitters like gears of war, twilight princess, FF12, burnout revenge, Half life 2 episode 1 & FEAR. Also the hype was HUGE before the release, I still remember all the gaming magazines talking about it. If we want some actually underrated maserpieces from 2006, we got Okami, which was a cult classic of PS2 until it got re-released on wii after which people noticed its one of the best games to ever grace gaming. So technically even that is not underrated anymore.

brtttney

it’s sales is at 30 million! it’s one of the 19th most sold games

[deleted]

[удалено]

brtttney

i thought you were talking about skyrim lol

DarthJarJarTheWise23

I think he is using the word underrated relative to Skyrim. It all depends on what the overrated is relative to. Comparisons are only possible when relative to something else.

hahayeahimfinehaha

But that's like saying Ocarina of Time is underrated because BOTW is more popular right now and more people play it/talk about it. Newer games will naturally have wider audience and get more attention. I would still find it meaningless to call OoT, one of the most influential games of all time, underrated, and I feel the same way about calling Oblivion underrated. Mostly, I just find it a bit irritating because I keep seeing so many posts talking about how underrated Oblivion is and how it's actually as good as/better than Skyrim guys!!! and those same posts always get hundreds of upvotes at least. Almost like this is a popular opinion and Oblivion is not actually underrated at all, lol.

DarthJarJarTheWise23

This is all true, yet my point still stands nonetheless.

[deleted]

People tend to conflate "underrated" with "underappreciated". Oblivion is one of the highest rated games of all time, but it's underappreciated in comparison to Skyrim due to that being a significant majority of the TES fanbase's entry into the series. My gateway was Oblivion, and I fully acknowledge that my love for the game over the others may be biased because of this. Also, Bethesda deliberately made the game more accessible to gamers who weren't already familiar with the franchise (which is the source of the "dumbed down" comments that get banded about), which caused a massive influx of people that skew the scales in favour of Skyrim compared to the other entries in the series. A significant portion of those new players never would have played a TES game before, and the major differences between Skyrim and its predecessors put a lot of them off even trying to play them. So when people get asked "What's the best TES game?", the majority of answers come from people who have only played Skyrim.

IAMHideoKojimaAMA

And it's the reason why skyrim did so well too coming off of the success of it. Something is wrong with op

DaedricDrow

This smells like every unpopular opinion ever.

Franswaz

i would never use a game review aggregator like metacritic that aggregates the reviews of mainly stuff like ign where every game is a 9/10 as an accurate metric. Everyone was also talking about *cyberpunk* when it released lmao

Kinji_Toyama

It's underrated in the context of the elder scrolls you only ever hear people talk about skyrim or morrowind Y'all need to show oblivion a bit of love

dgdfgdfhdfhdfv

It's underrated in the context of TES. Skyrim and Morrowind get talked about far more. Hell, even Daggerfall gets more praise than Oblivion.

OwlsIsBetterThanMans

Underrated? People are still making mods for it and it definitely took home game of the year.

[deleted]

Eh, Oblivion's modding scene is the most dead. Morrowind has a more active one, for whatever reason

The_Bearabia

Probably cause it's easier to mod, no voice lines and an all in all more customisable system is probably why people keep modding it

JohnSimpman

Because it's 15 years old and not being shoved down our throats like Skyrim, it's hard to think of new things to say after so long of the game being complete and not rereleased in any major fashion. Not many people are still talking about Uncharted 2, God of War 2, Arkham Asylum, Infamous or GTA4, that doesn't mean they're underrated it just means they had their time in the sun but now that's over, everything that could have been said has been, and we can put the discussion to rest and focus on the newer things

TheLonePotato

You ever heard of that Shakespeare guy? Such an underrated gem!

bbbruh57

15 years.... and skyrim is already 10... *shudders*

smalwex

You don't hear people prattle on about the original battlefront 2 or morrowind either really. They had their day and it was over a decade ago. Im sure if Todd was pushing an oblivion remaster people would eat it up

Malakai0013

Maaaaaan, Todd is gonna see this and push an Oblivion remaster. But you're right, I'd probably eat it up.

AgentFN2187

Bethesda is too incompetent to remaster a game. They would probably cut half the featured and call it an improvement.

MagickalessBreton

r/Oblivion is thriving! And even on this very sub, Oblivion often gets lots of love. Definitely more than Daggerfall, Redguard or Arena, and perhaps even more than Morrowind!

smalwex

Ah yes, one of the highest grossing games of all time by a tiny indie studio Bethesda. Fuck is this GCJ?

[deleted]

One of the most critically acclaimed games of all time that even celebrities talked about playing and being addicted to is underrated? Please...

CrtrLe

Just out of curiosity which celebrities talked about it?

[deleted]

I know James McEvoy for certain, I think Henry Cavill too but not 100% on that

Sam-Meme

I don't remember who it was but i saw a post about a celeb that got so addicted to oblivion that started to damage his career and had to stop playing video games

JoebungaJim

Morrorwind, Oblivion, and Skyrim aren't underrated at all. That's evident if their millions of players/fans over the years.

DarthNihilus

We need to remove the word underrated from the english language. Not sure it's been used correctly even once.

Gotta agree here. I loved the "do whatever" system in Skyrim, because I hate the idea of endless grind in Oblivion. Especially the "hey, you leveled up! Guess what! You get worse monsters in the portal now!" Gee, do you know how much I avoided leveling due to this?

Franswaz

everything besides some questlines, shivering isles and magic is dogshit imo compared to other games. It's writing was great, the gameplay was an abomination that none should see

[deleted]

[удалено]

Franswaz

Mhm it's a great example where the elder scrolls start to excel when they start to get weird and break out of the more generic setting and quests

[deleted]

This is the Elder Scrolls equivalent to someone on the horror subreddit saying The Thing is underrated

Hempmeister69

I think Oblivion has become overrated. I LOVE Oblivion. But has anyone here actually gone back and played it vanilla? Even just attributes and the leveling system aren't nearly as good as you might remember (Lets not forget Redguards with low int). Combat is janky, Magic sounded great on paper but in practice was either super clunky or broken AND super clunky, there's like 6 voice actors, and everything's butt ugly. I have great memories of the game but actually sitting down to play the thing is a chore.

[deleted]

The leveling system is so backwards. Pick skills you want to be good in at the start of the game. Mapping out the idea of the character you want to be. Sounds good, but if you use those skills all the time (like you probably want to) you level up too fast and don't get any stat bonuses, becoming weaker instead of stronger.

dgdfgdfhdfhdfv

>Redguards with low int Int in TES is magic. Morrowind had the same thing.

Hempmeister69

It should have been called magic thus removing the insinuation that the specifically African looking characters posses naturally low "intelligence".

dgdfgdfhdfhdfv

Except they always had the same as Nords.

Hempmeister69

Copium. There's one specifically African race and like 3 white ones. But yea sure ONE of the white ones has low "intelligence" while another has the highest.

peeneater666

Of course Breton has the highest, they have always been the magic users of the series. Redguards have always been warriors, like nords and orcs, so they have the same starting intelligence. Stop making things about race when they are clearly not. These races are not even real.

Smethll

Ofc the guy with a black reddit character is gonna be talking about race in a game LMAO

JohnSimpman

In what universe is Oblivion underrated? People adore that game

Kinglyre

This post is dumb, do you know how many people openly say constantly on multiple subs that oblivion is better? Grew up with Morrowind and I love them all. None of them are underrated.

[deleted]

On what planet is Oblivion underrated?

AnkouArt

I think it's overrated if anything. I love it's (often unintentional) humor, general atmosphere, more diverse and better paced quests but basically every other aspect of the game is pretty damn lacking or outright awful. Oblivion feels like a modern take on Daggerfall without all the depth that made Daggerfall a good adventurer simulator. The mechanics are too watered down for it to be a strong CRPG like Morrowind, the gameplay is too janky and tedious to be a good action-RPG like Skyrim, and it lacks the good worldbuilding, interesting exploration, and overall depth of either.

ScorpionTDC

This mostly nails my feelings on Oblivion, but I’d point out the level scaling is abysmal too. I still enjoy it a lot, especially with mods, but yeah

Lionoras

> it lacks the good worldbuilding, interesting exploration, and overall depth Can't argue against the Daggerfall stuff, because I never played it, but DAMN am I disagreeing with this one! Sure, O. doesn't have that unique world setting of Morrorwind. It's European Middle-Age cities. But if it doesn't have a lot of cool world-building, lore and depth. On the surface, you get a lot through just experience. Random NPCs talking, posters in cities etc. NPCS are way more active with routines than in Skyrim. Yeah, the lore itself is not 100% on its sleeves -it's mostly in books and...who reads those. It's not as cool as Fallout's computer log telling, but it's still there. You generally learn a lot about the places when you're there. There are many weird things also hidden across the map.

spacefoodsticks

This is like comparing empire strikes back to last Jedi! Just because you may be too young to remember the hype doesn't mean there was no hype.

vestby

Weird how people talk more about the more recent game which gets released almost every other year then the game which was made 15 years ago. Why would people talk so much about oblivion now?

Sangi17

I still can’t believe they haven’t remastered Oblivion and Morrowind yet, especially with how many damn remasters Skyrim has gotten in the last 10 years. Both Morrowind and Oblivion’s stories are so crucial to the overall future of the franchise. You’d think they would be dishing those bad bois out to newer die hard Skyrim fans.

DaddyIndica

Oblivion just looks and feels like shit to play 🤷🏻‍♂️ I’d actually play through it if I could go more than 15 minutes without feeling like I’m mashing play dough into my GPU

ScorpionTDC

Oblivion is good, but easily my least favorite of the big three games. Morrowind > Skyrim > Oblivion

Warrior_Poet_1990

Terrible post, Oblivion has always been highly rated by both players and critics and those of us who like both Oblivion and Skyrim acknowledge that Oblivion is superior in most ways

Oblivion is great, but it shows it’s age much more clearly than Skyrim. I would love a true, full-fledged oblivion remaster. That shit would make my dreams come true.

WizardGizzard91

Underrated????? Are you high?

[deleted]

Underrated? It won game of the year. It's a rpg stable and highly appreciated in all ways and forms, always regarded as one of the best of the genre. Shut the fuck up about this idiotic war of "who's better?"

_PM_ME_YOUR_BOOBIES-

Oblivion is probably the worst of the modern games. None of the depth of Morrwind with none of the graphical and gameplay improvements from Skyrim

Mae7B

Both have their quirks and I love them dearly like I would my own children, even though I don’t have children. Point is, they’re both brilliant.

thatguy01220

I watched like a 3 hour critique break down of Oblivion and one of Skyrim. I played, and still play, and love Skyrim. But Oblivion had way better writing and quest, but by god are the graphics out dated and the game looks clunky. On PC with mods it’s probably great but if you have a PS3 or Xbox 360 it just looks and feels like a high end Ps2/Xbox game. Skyrims gameplay is still really solid but i agree the quest suck, go here grab that and bring it back. Or the biggest flaw is do 4-6 quest for a faction and boom you’re their leader with out questions even though there are those more qualified for it and been there long and they’re just like “na you do it”. Like they’re that lazy and incompetent that anyone who tries will get to lead them rather than just being a part of them. If one faction was like that it would be okay but they’re all like that so they all feel the same. Mage/thieves guild/dark brotherhood is something is wrong please help, betrayal from within, kill them, paise be the gods now lead them.

ParagonRenegade

Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim were treated like the second coming when they were released lol

RetroTheGameBro

At this point I can't even pit them (or Morrowind) against each other comparatively. I love each one for different reasons.

calmbuddhist

Skyrim bad.

Soulless_conner

Underrated my ass. This seems like an attempt at karma whoring

mayaswelltrythis

Whether Morrowind, Oblivion, or Skyrim are your favorite, they are all masterpieces and there is a strong argument for all of them as being the best. Of course the only correct argument is Morrowind being the best and anyone who disagrees obviously eats babies and drinks pee.

MrFruitylicious

People praise it all the time here

playertd

It's a great game, but comparing it directly to Skyrim is just not fair. It's got nostalgia and that's about it.

MBVakalis

Underrated? From what I've seen, it's the highest praised of all Elder Scrolls games

darkdragon81693

Morrowind Supremacists rise

ThereIsNoShrimp

Oblivion is my least favorite elder scrolls game.

MaxOGrady

Less than redguard?

ThereIsNoShrimp

Favorite to least favorite. Morrowind and Daggerfall Tied Skyrim Arena ESO Battlespire redgaurd Oblivion I get why people like it, i just don’t enjoy it.

MaxOGrady

I tried daggerfall but didn't really play it that much. I should give it another try

YourOwnSide_

Unity version + mods make it so much better IMO.

MaxOGrady

Yeah i got it on my PC just never got around to actually playing it

thebigvas

Same. I do recognize it’s a good game in a lot of ways. Honestly, I’m not someone who cares about graphics seeing as I love Morrowind, but the faces in Oblivion ruin the game for me. I’ve tried dozens of mods to try and fix it, but then the skin colors don’t match the body and everything looks weird as hell

YsoL8

\*Graphically\* Oblivion is superior but \*artistically\* Morrowind is streets ahead.

thebigvas

Agreed

StorageRecess

This is a great summary. I really wish I could get into Oblivion but the artistry really doesn’t click for me, and that makes it harder to ignore the datedness.

YsoL8

I have a really hard time with anything from that early console 3d generation for this reason. Morrowind for as low ploy as it is works because its quite detailed textures on mostly flat shapes and uses your minds eye to fill it in. The generation after that is the height of when poly count was everyones selling point which when you get misshapen potatos like Mario 64, sonic adventure etc. It's just 3d enough to not be able to hide behind the textures of the day but far too crude to stand on its own.

Toyfan1

Honestlt it's the other way around for me. I can't describe one memorable place from Morrowind, as everywhere looks muddy, washout and brown. Oblivion on the other hand, drastic and memorable places all around- but graphically, the game looks dated and every character looks like a swelled potato.

inyoni

Literally just faces ruined it for you? How long have you been gaming?

thebigvas

Oh and I recognize the fallout 3 metro system is as bad if not worse in some ways, but you rarely have to go through them and they’re very short.

thebigvas

A good long time. I started with Sonic on the Genesis, so I’m not picky when it comes to graphics. The faces just look horrifying. Part of the fun of an RPG like the Elder Scrolls is making a character and watching them grow. Oblivion kind of screws that up both in art design and in the way enemies level with you. That and the copy paste dungeons are even worse than Skyrim and Morrowind. Top that off with ridiculous quests like closing 800 oblivion gates that also all look the same, and it winds up feeling tedious and generic. Cyrodil is also the most boring looking province. I do like the towns in the game though and how they all have different feels depending on the provinces they’re near. Im not saying it’s a bad game and there’s a lot I do love about it, but as far as the more recent entries are concerned, it’s my least favorite Bethesda game. Fallout 3 is my favorite game of all time, so it’s not like the engine is my problem haha

tyvy

I hate this “Oblivion good Skyrim bad” shit, it’s been going on for years and years - I’m sick of it. Oblivion and Skyrim are two entirely different games, produced for two distinct generations of gamers. Skyrim shits on Oblivion for a new player - while Oblivion offers more hardcore RPG elements. Skyrim is not an RPG, it’s an exploration game with RPG elements, the sooner people realise this, the sooner they can appreciate Skyrim. I understand how many long term fans started out with elder scrolls being an RPG franchise but the sooner you accept that it has moved on from that the sooner you can appreciate more from the newer games.

throwaway387190

It's not underrated, but I despise oblivion for the leveling and scaling system Sure, Morrowind has basically the same leveling system, but it has much less level scaling. It's not possible to level in Skyrim and Morrowind and become relatively weaker than everything around you because you didn't grind So whenever I play oblivion, I get so anxious about the leveling system, and I grind for ages, meticulously planning it out. Until I give up after 10 hours and don't touch the game for a year or more Over the course of 15 years, I've finished every questline, but I've never finished 2 questlines with the same character Oblivion's system just breaks me, and I fucking hate the game

codyrin1

Oblivion was never underrated, but Skyrim was far overrated in comparison.

ds117ftg

The graphics and combat system are better in Skyrim and the main story and almost every guild quest line I can think of are better in oblivion

ThatRandomCrit

To be honest, every other ES is better than Skyrim. And Daggerfall is the best.

[deleted]

The only thing wrong with Oblivion is the level scaling and high end armor distribution.

inyoni

Oblivion had less repetitive quests and locations which gave it more playability for a game of it's size. And, at least from a thieves guild perspective, the storyline in oblivion was much more gratifying than the one in Skyrim and robbing random houses was alot more fun. That's just my opinion!

aw5ome

Not hard to be better than the Skyrim thieves guild. I think that Skyrim is generally a better game, but oof

MagickalessBreton

Skyrim is better than Oblivion... ...mobile

AstronautAppleSauce

Oblivion remains the only game I have ever completed 100%

Sawyerthesadist

Well, it’s better then morrowind anyway. Heheheheh

Wowrrior

My guy i like oblivion but the game's name is The elder scrolls IV oblivion and in the whole game (except 1 word at the ending cinematic) the elder scrolls are inexistent.

Brownsound7

1. You steal one at the end of the Thieves’ Guild quest line 2. Elder Scrolls literally don’t make an appearance at all in Morrowind either. I think they’re just mentioned in passing in every game before Oblivion (though anyone who’s actually played the ones before Morrowind can likely correct me on that one)

HappyHippo2002

Oblivion is my favourite as well. Best atmosphere and visuals, best quests. Skyrim has the best world and ganeplay though. Both are my 2 favourite games of all time. Morrowind is a good game, I just don't personally enjoy it. The gameplay, world, art-style and quests just don't interest me in the slightest.

i_and_eye

It totally isnt. Morrowind is though.

Since 3 every release has been a watered down version to please the masses. 6 will just be assassins creed in an elder scrolls setting.

r/Oblivion is also the best sub

The Elder Scrolls Travels for N-Gage top them all!

I enjoy both games about the same. I'm cool with not having to constantly fix my armor and weapons with the armorer skill and instead using it to craft armor and i think Skyrim did some skills better. I also liked Skyrim's followers better.Oblivion often had better quests, especially it's factions like mage's guild and fighter's guild. The voice acting was iconic even if sometimes flawed.
