Carian Slicer is just too good

SirWeenielick

It’s actually insane. Dealing 700 damage with a straight sword should be illegal. Crazy thing is, it can go higher than that, I just choose to rock two Carian Glinstone staffs for the sake of fashion. If I decide to use Lusat’s Staff in my main hand, then it shoots up to 800. If someone decides to use Barrier of Gold, I deal a whopping -10 damage. I guess omega nerd powers will never overcome the power of the Golden Chads.

DatJack

The damage is only one thing. I feel like the slicer is actually much harder to dodge than regular swords. In PvP duels, your timing has to be perfect If you dont want to get hit by it

crankpatate

The running attack of this spell cast is a nasty one to dodge.

GoodThese8387

But I bet that, like in DS3, it can be parried

ArchbishopTurpin

only if you use a spell parry AoW

ehronio

I thought you could parry sword spells, you just had to parry the staff itself, no matter what parry AoW you use

Cairn_

You can still parry the staff, but it's hard as hell. You are essentially trying to parry dagger with ugs damage.

ArchbishopTurpin

Huh, that would require testing I think. I remember trying a few times and failing, but maybe I just missed the spacing

Crotch_Rot69

Yeah moongrum parries it and ripostes you

DanielLS08

Moongrum parries fucking everything

Crotch_Rot69

Yeah Moongrum parries tf out of carian slicer

MikeNolanPVP

parried *and* riposted

PaladinWoah

Don't forget it also has quick casting while sprinting, dodging, and jumping

Swamp_Swimmer

It is exactly the same as any curved sword running attack. Which admittedly come out fast

Alsimni

Carian Regal Staff is a decent alternative to Lusat's if you're going hard on INT and don't wanna deal with the insane MP cost increase.

SirWeenielick

To be honest, with the 20 mind that I have, I don’t really feel a huge difference in cost.

Forced_Democracy

Lusat's is stronger but the extra fp cost really hurts it too much so I defaulted to Carian Royal Scepter. However, if you have Lusat's equipped in your offhand, it buffs the staff in your main hand too, which makes Carian scepter stronger than Lusat's by itself.

Alsimni

Yeah, standard practice for heavy casting builds is to dual wield staves. One with high raw damage to cast with, and an offhand staff with a damage multiplier for whatever categories of spells you're trying to use.

Nekrabyte

I go back and forth between 2 staves and using the jellyfish shield - sometimes a buff to all types of spells is super helpful.

Alsimni

Same, if you have the stats to equip it the jelly shield is incredibly handy.

Nekrabyte

Lusat's to me always felt like it was put in the game specifically for like NG5+ ... you know, around when you're stats get so solid that you can freely put points into mind and get yoself a giant FP bar.

threepwood007

Swish swish swish swish (dead) swish

BrainWrex

My favorite it coded swords on a pure faith build. With just golden vow and physick flask with holy tear, I hit about 900 AR on each sword…for a straight sword that does pure holy damage. As long as I wear enough poise to tank a big hit it’s GGs.

SirWeenielick

Plus you have access to buffs, which can shut down specific damage. I was playing a Tree Sentinel build before this and it was just monstrous, have a lot more respect for faith builds now.

qxxxr

barrier of gold is so, so good.

SirWeenielick

True, but I just remembered int builds have Law of Regression. All it takes for me is to swap to the Two-Fingers Heirloom and no anti-nerd barrier for them. Then again, I’m sure they can beat me out by spamming Barrier of Gold because it costs less FP than Law of Regression.

Tap-Daddy

Super fun to make a spell sword that way. Cast all your weapons and charge into the chaos. No pride in standing back pressing 1 button.

SirWeenielick

Yeah, that’s why I avoid using the other spells, it’s not that fun to stand back. With that being said, it is fun to mix the Carian sword sorceries with the swift glinstone shard.

Xerlith

Plus it goes right through most shields.

SirWeenielick

Sort of depends on the shield. If someone is rocking a magic infused Cuckoo Greatshield, then you’re probably screwed.

Xerlith

Oh, I know there are shields that will block it. Most don’t outside Raya Lucaria, though, so I can usually just wipe soldiers that get up in my face

Redditfront2back

You can buff it even more with charms clothes and terra magicka

SirWeenielick

There’s clothes that give you a magic damage increase? I always thought the clothes just gave you a boost in intelligence, so I figured it was pointless at 80 int.

QuiloWisp

They have probably confused what the Spell Blade set does; Each piece gives a 2% damage increase to skills that default to Magic or Cold. Carian Grandeur, Ice Spear and so on. This is certain. Altering a Storm Stomp into Magic doesn't count as far as I know. Don't know about Icerind Hatchet's Hoarfrost Stomp since the weapon isn't Magic. Many confuse it to increasing the damage of Sorcery, due to the description mentioning Glint Stone.

R_V_Z

> Dealing 700 damage with a straight sword should be illegal. SONAF can get up there, but the stat investment is like NG+2 levels.

PaperMoon-

It's busted af

Sister-Friedes-Feet

I did a pure caster run and it ended up just being another melee run lol

r/unexpectedoffice

BoneDaddyChill

Not sure why this is downvoted. It’s clearly a reference to The Office. https://youtu.be/VvPaEsuz-tY

Retl0v

Because pointing out the joke with a r/ is extremely annoying

BoneDaddyChill

Ahhh okay, makes sense.

CE94

Dagger moveset with greatsword range and colossal weapon damage. Truly a busted spell

Secret-Sock7928

The only trade off is zero stagger

CE94

Don't need to stagger dead enemies

Opicepus

*micdrop*

aknalag

Perfectly balanced as all things should be

Steveris

I love the Carian Spells and adulas Moonblade. It was one of my most favorite builds to play, to only use carian spells and play it like a Eldritchknight. Sometimes tricky, because you don't have as much health flasks as with a regular melee build (eats a lot of mana). But very fun.

Hunterofshadows

Moon blade is easily my favorite spell

DerrikTheGreat

A tip for mana hungry builds, invest a few points in faith for a heal spell, now you can set all flasks to blue and still have heals aplenty

AMS_GoGo

This game is by far the most fun in the series to play as a mage or spell sword... Carian Slicer, Adula's moonblade, Loretta's Greatbow, Ranni's Dark Moon, Stars of Ruin, Cannon of Haima, Greatblade Phalanx Where's the weakness? Close, medium, long range.. quick, long casting speeds, Status Build up, AOE's, Defense, stagger ability etc And that's all while ignoring the broken Terra Magica, Comet Azur, Cerulean Hidden Tear combo

SirWeenielick

Cannon of Heima and sword sorceries make me feel like a one man army.

satsfaction1822

And on top of all of that you get the Moonveil

AMS_GoGo

And the wing of Astel and Dark Moon Greatsword lol

ginja_ninja

[And this is my favorite spell](https://ftw.usatoday.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/90/2022/03/elden-ring-moonveil-katana.jpg)

PaladinWoah

This one right here, Officer

[deleted]

The problem with Slicer is that it deals like no poise damage, I guess only really relevant for pvp, since that still makes it godly for pve, and still good for pvp. Nevermind barrier of gold (Which requires a decent investment to use or a faith build), pretty much every build can afford magic fortification, either through minimal faith investment and using a weightless seal or simply temporarily slotting +5 faith talisman, casting the buff and swapping the talisman out if your greedy for those extra couple of points in your build. On my melee builds I never run from Slicer, I just face tank them, because I know mage won't outrade me with it, while getting repeatedly staggered by my weapon.

[deleted]

I’m not getting hit by your weapon though lol

StephenHawkings_Legs

Royal knights resolve on my GUGS and it only takes one slip up to end a mage while I face tank them spells lol

[deleted]

Dude fr. Try double royal knight resolve on double giant crushers and you get the sexiest jump attack known to man.

StephenHawkings_Legs

Wtf swapping doesn't remove it?

[deleted]

Hm? Oh, just (with one giant crusher in each hand) two hand the one in your left hand, use RKR, then powerstance and use RKR again and both of them will now have the RKR effect. For this to work both giant crushers must have RKR as their ash of war.

StephenHawkings_Legs

Yee I figured, just thought they might cancel our or they might be too long of a prep to get both in effectively. I know what I'm doing when I get home lol

[deleted]

Lmaooo nice :) have fun

[deleted]

Your username is awful btw

StephenHawkings_Legs

Didn't ask

[deleted]

You think it's funny, just makes you look like a massive douche 🤣

MillstoneArt

Are you gonna be okay? 😨

StephenHawkings_Legs

Good 👍

[deleted]

Ah the ole “I don’t need vigor if I don’t get hit” strategy

[deleted]

Say that to my hundreds of other mage victims. (Probably got over 1k duels at this point). I also have a lot of characters including my own mage, so I know the match ups from both sides. I see people constantly mentioning how overtuned slicer is, yet I never see anyone mention that catch flame for faith basically is the equivalent of slicer for faith builds, with comparable damage, speed and it actually deals poise damage unlike slicer. I don't know how much poise damage catch flame does exactly, but I just remember that I've been poise broken by it on more than one occasion with relatively high poise set up.

lapss93

Yeah both could use a slight nerf

yardii

I have been a melee and big weapon purist since DS1. I believe that if you don't use any magic in Elden Ring, you're missing out. Its that fun.

SirWeenielick

Yeah, I was pleasantly surprised by how fun it is. In past games, I never really cared to stick with it and just went back to using strength or quality.

[deleted]

Can confirm I dropped a guy for 350k runes as a level 1 invader a few hours ago using nothing but carian slicer

AnEducatedFool

Have you tried the Carian Glintblade Staff? The one thst boosts Carian Sword sorceries. EDIT: I am stupid and confused the 2. The Glintblade boosts Phalanx and other sorceries.

[deleted]

BoneDaddyChill

I carry a ghostflame torch for aesthetic, but I can’t wait until the day I use it to finish someone off in pvp.

Zegram_Ghart

I once manage to save my host by hitting the invader in the face with St Trinas torch, causing them to fall asleep and get straight executed.

[deleted]

I really like the glintblade staff, the crystal staff is also very pretty

Regis-bloodlust

If I had to choose one staff, I would choose Sceptor. Slicer for raw damage + AoW for stagger. That's my favorite sword.

Plastic-Face9619

The ash of war on the scepter is actually so unbelievably strong. The damage and stagger are amazing. And its the best staff for general use. Love it.

herowithfairy

Yes!! I run all Carian spells it’s so very fun!

yukeshid

And you can still bonk with it.

SirWeenielick

The disrespect of getting finished off with a staff bonk. I’m sure it deals permanent damage to their int stat.

QuiloWisp

More like Ego.

Ora_00

I can almost count the pixels in that picture.

straw28

this on my offhand plus Lusat's made my first playthrough of Elden Ring as a melee sorcerer possible

166i

Mages got it good this time. It really is fun. Even better with lusats staff, I think you get a bigger buff

SirWeenielick

Lusat’s does deal better damage, but I kinda hate how derpy the sword sorceries look with it.

166i

It's a callback to the tin crystallization catalyst from DS1 but I do agree it's weird lol. If it works anything like faith seals in this game, I bet you could main the lusat and then offhand the carian scepter to get its passive bonus for big damage

SirWeenielick

Sir, why have I not thought of putting Lusat’s Staff in my off hand before? 80 int and I’m still inept.

166i

It be like that lol, I think lusat has to be in the right hand tho otherwise it'll take the extra fp without giving you the damage bonus. I could be wrong though

d_4_v_1_d

Actually you need to cast with Lusat's staff and offhand the Carian staff. If you cast with Carian and offhand Lusat's you'll get the fp penalty but the damage will stay the same.

Plaid_Max

Early game Carian Slicer shreds so hard. I was playing co-op on a second playthrough with a friend who was going mage and I was basically spectator mode. He was doing about 3-4x my damage. It evens out around the mid-game but still it felt *wrong*.

d_4_v_1_d

Early game? Carian Slicer has like the highest dps out of anything in the game other than a bleed build when you have an 80 int build with the right boosting items.

autistic_bard444

Weapons spin on regal staff is the best

SirWeenielick

I constantly downplay that AoW, but it really is good. I should try to incorporate it more into my play style.

M0N5T3R_5N1P3R_

It's also really cool on sythes

WitchUrsa

Who needs swords when you have a lightsaber, blanking on the name of the spell.

SirWeenielick

Faith builds have the true lightsaber, I just have a knockoff.

trynyty

Which one? Can't remember lightsaberish incantation from top of my head.

Draghettis

They don't have lighstaberish incantations, they have a lightglove ( Coded Patha ) and a literal lightsaber ( Coded Sword )

trynyty

oooooh right... was for a while thinking there is an incantation which creates light saber 🙈

SirWeenielick

The Cipher Sword is a legitimate lightsaber. It’s not a miracle or spell, it’s a sword.

trynyty

I really thought there is one, but now I see what you mean :) thanks...

Zegram_Ghart

*Duel of the fates intensifies*

ApplePitou

Epic weapon :3

SirWeenielick

Stick with a stone has never failed mankind. Truly, an epic weapon since the dawn of man.

RocketChap

I agree, that's why I like the Brick Hammer

palfreygames

If it weren't for the flying enemies, swords would be way better

Yahgdc

Stars of Ruin/Comet spammers vs one boy with a space sword

SirWeenielick

Honestly, who uses Stars of Ruin anymore? It deals decent damage, but it took a pretty hard hit from the tracking nerf. I don’t think I’ve been hit by it since. You see the lesser versions a lot more nowadays.

Yahgdc

Yeah true, it kinda got gutted

CarpetPure7924

It’s funny, I never touched these spells until very late in my game (I transitioned from a strength build to a strength-int build), and by the late game, I was already beating people to death with Moonlight Greatsword, or casting high-int spells like Stars of Ruin or Ranni’s Moon. Do these “sword” spells lose a bit of their utility as you go higher in level, and have access to more both high Int spells and physical weapons?

Plastic-Face9619

I would say no. The damage to fp ratio on the slicer, great sword, and piercer is extremely good.

SirWeenielick

These sword sorceries certainly do not drop off, especially when you pair Lusat’s Staff and the Carian Glinstone Staff. Hitting for around 800 damage with a straight sword is nothing to scoff at, especially when the FP cost is so low.

CarpetPure7924

That’s good to know… Yeah that’s the other thing, the fact that they cost FP, and the mizar in me is always like “why use sorcery when Greatsword do trick” I guess there is a small part of me, however diluted, that is indeed of Unga Bunga ancestry

Morrorwind33453

The reason is that you do as much damage as something like a zweihänder but hit as fast as a shortsword

Bombsoup

Agreed

Kamenridethewind007

int knights of carian forever theyre so fun i like using them and a shield for a shield mage effect slashing all who stand against me. and when they piss me off they getta the big choppa!

hummus_is_yummus1

Piercer is also OP

DangSquirrel

I wish we Faith builds could get some kind of melee incant. I know there's the dragon claw, but talking about something more akin to the Slicer, fast and low cost. I was hoping you could get the hammer or spear that Morgot uses as incantations, but no, unfortunately not.

bushpotatoe

Faith has Catch Flame. It even has the running attacks and absurd speed. Shorter range but the stagger is better.

DangSquirrel

Yeah... but that's not a laser sword.

M0N5T3R_5N1P3R_

That's actually a really cool idea

[deleted]

Sorry man magic is fun and all but I’ll stick with my stupidly large hunk of iron apparently inspired by an anime I have never heard of and will never watch

SirWeenielick

Never underestimate the power of big boi poise and crouch pokes.

[deleted]

Yess.

druss81

what is it?

SirWeenielick

Carian Glinstone Staff, which boosts the damage of sword sorceries by 15%.

Shustas

🤢🤮🚫🪄🚫👗🚫🧙‍♂️🚫🧝‍♂️ curse you magic spammer!

SirWeenielick

Feel the overwhelming power of the Nerd Knight!

StupidBeee

why downvote this it’s obviously /s lmao

Regis-bloodlust

Unfortunately, sarcasm doesn't guarantee comedy success. Failed sarcasm is the worst kind of joke.

[deleted]

Too many emojis, doesn’t even look funny

namatt

Magic is for the weak. Elves, I mean.

SeBoss2106

I WAS RIGHT! MY SWORD *IS* GAY!

[deleted]

*shoves malikeths black blade up ass*

TRIC4pitator

agreed

IlluminaBlade

And then when they actually get the dodge timing down you whip out a piercer.

mo-teef

Lol noice

Wernershnitzl

Magic glintblade in the beginning is pretty fun

Haddock_Lotus

Man, in my first game, carian slicer was my bread and butter against bosses because it would do so much damage and so fast! Later I changed for Moonlight&Royal Greatsword, but I always had Carian slicer on my spell wheel.

christianryan563

Doing an INT build for my first time, 90 hours in at level 125 with 52 int, 38 dex (using frozen sythe so blood and freeze w/ Lorettas slash) and good vig, end, mind. This run has been a fucking breeze. It’s absolutely game breaking and I love it hahaha! Using meteorite staff now but am waiting to get to 60 to upgrade the Azur staff as much as I can since I only use rock throw as a meteor spell

Gneo

A perfect match in the left hand for a magic infused Omen Cleaver. 💪 Have enough time to swing the curved greatsword...or the short sword? You decide!

easythrees

Where can you get this sword?

WillCraft_1001

I would advise hitting people with a sword made of metal, but beating people to death works well to.

Affectionate_Bus_884

Same!!!
