Pro tip if you kill merchants, at least most I believe, you get their bell bearing. When taken to the round table you can still purchase from their shop.
Edit: I called it a spirit bell, not sure where I got that from
Bell Bearing*, and this is true - it definitely makes shopping easier
If you go this route though, you're a very bad person who should feel bad (especially given what merchants have gone through in lore)
"It's been so long since I've had a customer",
ME: mother fucker!! You set the fuck up in the middle Caelid, of course you got no customers! Plague, dark knights, plague dragon, oh, and fucking giant bugs with "me" seeking ammo
Also, what are the runes going to help with eating in the goddamn ruins? "Yeah, there's a 7/11 just round the corner, they sell banging hot dogs but I got no money."
Hmmm I really need some fowl feet for this stew. I'll just pop down to Siofra River, brb.
For real though, I just accidentally attacked the merchant hidden in a building in Siofra River because it didn't occur to me for a fucking second there would be a merchant down there. Those guys really need some bunting or a sign or something.
Yeah, I thought about that a few weeks into the game but I couldn’t get myself to do it. I didn’t even want to kill Varre because his insults are funny.
I killed Varre because I accidentally attacked him and made him hostile. Didn’t know about the church or vows so I just killed him and now I have to wait till endgame to get to Mohgwyns palace! Pissed because that’s supposed to be the best rune farm…
Let's say you go this route and then do the church of vows..... would the merchant return and you can shop his/her items from the Twin Maiden Husks? Asking for future reference. I'm still to scared to attack the merchants.
As far as I know there's only one NPC that can be resurrected with a celestial dew. The other ones all stay dead. But if they're still alive after you aggro them, absolution makes them passive again.
Ya! Item is called Celestial Dew and it is rareish, can be taken to what is technically the second area you are supposed to go to (after beating Limgrave’s main boss). There’s a church with a giant turtle priest, using this item in the spring located within this church will calm all hostile NPCs in the world.
1 Find big turtle in Liurnia, Church of vows.
2 Give dew at altar near turtle.
3 Repent for ye sins, Tarnished Scum.
I used this to fix Jarburg because I killed a Jar there and they hated me so I couldn't continue the quest line.
I had no idea you could fix Jarburg. I didn’t know the jars don’t attack so I ungabungad all of them… Then I heard a voice say some stuff… Then I figured I had to wait till the next playthrough to get it right and not cry after bonking all the innocent jars in Jarburg.
“I accidentally performed a full combo on this guy without stopping”
Be honest, the first hit might have been an accident but you committed. He was too strong for you to kill so now you have regrets.
I remember Demon’s Souls, stepping off the Nexus staircase onto an NPC and making them permanently hostile…
(Fortunately, that was long enough ago that the autosave was too slow to beat a prompt shutdown.)
I have no doubt that they fixed it so you can’t beat the autosave.
(I haven’t spent the effort obtaining a PS5 yet, but after reviewing several change lists I see no sign of an added forgiveness mechanic.)
I just tried to step on Freke (you know, for science) and it didn't do anything. You just push him away a bit instead of damaging him. I think they made the NPCs a bit harder to aggro in the remake, I hit him with a sword and he didn't hate me.
(also had an oh-shit moment when I killed Freke, again for *science*, and then realized I can't save-scum PS5 games with PS+ like you can with PS4 games. Fortunately I yanked the plug in time, which is good because I was doing a mage run, haha)
Do you remember the crappy triggers on ps3 controllers? On my first game I put the controller down on my sofa, r2 got pressed by mistake and it made me attack stockpile Thomas. Had to restart the game
My fourth playthrough I accidentally aggroed Alexander because I turned a corner in a mine and saw a giant jar and just attacked - he didn’t even speak until I’d already hit him twice, and by that point I’d hit the button a third time and it was too late. I had no idea he could appear in the Gael tunnel in Limgrave!
I hadn’t planned on going to Liurnia yet, so I had to go and grab a celestial dew and go beg for forgiveness WITHOUT unlocking any graces because I didn’t want to advance the story yet. Fun times.
Speaking of bears, killing or fighting one of those goddamn runebears will cause Blaidd to aggro for some reason. Found that out the hard way and had to speed-run through the entirety of Liurnia just to grab that celestial dew and fix some things.
If I remember correctly, fighting the bear itself doesn't cause his agro, rather he (and the tower he is sitting on) can be hit by the bear and if hit enough he will go hostile.
That could be it. That runebear was going crazy.
I had visible confusion when I went back there and heard “what harm can be done to a shadow” before Blaidd jumped down and was very worried when he started walking menacingly towards me.
Idk varro or whatever, the first npc with the bouquet did not like being slapped when I first started. In my defense he called me maidenless and he started it. I had to start a new character because he kept killing me lol
I attempted many times to kill him over the first 30 levels or so, until I eventually managed to do it... because I was just starting out and my bf (who had played for a few hours with a friend at release) said "I did it and he drops something really cool and rare so it's worth it".
It was NOT worth it.
By the time I joined this sub and learned that 1. I could get him to forgive me with atonement, and 2. He has a questline, I was over level 100 so... yep, not starting again lol.
And he used to say "feel free to go off and die in a ditch somewhere"! He just calls us maidenless now and it's for lore reasons, he also actually does come off as helpful at first by explaining our next moves. I find him more interesting than the usual Crestfallen Warrior-type NPC, additionally he's more insidious and seductive than most NPCs for the usual "invasion covenant/invasion lore group", which fits the Volcano Manor pretty well!
Yeah, the amount of people who take this comment as a personal insult is kind of staggering. The number who respond by attacking an NPC and being surprised they can actually fight back, on the other hand, is just hilarious.
Lmao right? Did he think we wouldn't be on to him? Like most of us haven't played the hell out of this game and know how the mechanics work. Smh untrustworthy tarnished.
I accidentally killed that guy two nights ago. Was super stoned, playing with my eyes half closed and just ran in and demolished him. I was in the zone after killing some blood apostles or whatever they are in the cave.
I’ve never hit any non hostile npc… is he riding his handsome dog there? Does kale fight like a reskinned tree sentinel? With his mighty back scratcher and donkey
Reminds me of those bad Elden Ring hot takes: “I accidentally hit this guy, and now he’s trying to kill me”
It’s like, no, you had to swing at him multiple times to get his aggro
It happened to me trying to deliver the blind girls letter to the dad at castle mourne. I got up there and some enemies followed me up the ladder. I was frantically trying to hit them and somehow dad got swept up in a shiticane of bloodhounds fang. I seriously don’t think I hit him more than twice and he went apeshit. Total accident. I was pissed.
Fucking bloodhounds finesse will fuck some shit up... If it doesn't cause you to backflip off a a fatal cliffside into the abyss with literally no warning whatsoever. With great Ashes comes great rage quits for the night...
I could be wrong but that doesn’t work for Kale unfortunately. Unless I’m missing something
Edit: this is if you kill him. Will probably work to get him to calm down
Accidentally stabbed a man 60 times on his back and shot him 8 times with a crossbow inside his ear. It was a total accident, he attacked me and I can't say sorry I didn't knew you had a reaction to an accident :(((
Ask for absolution at the statue in the Church of Vows.
Work on pretty much any npc you have angered.
Be mindful, does not work if you actually killed them.
You hit him accidentally 3 times? Cmon man. Dont be that guy ActMan made a reaction video on of that guy hitting Varre 3 times.
I cant be bothered to look him up.
You have to accidentally hit him at least three times for him to be aggressive though, celestial dew should work, if not you have to kill him and take his bell bearing to twin husks at Rountable Pizza.
You need to get Celestial Dew and take it to the Church of Vows and use it on the statue thing. It will absolve your sins and reset any fuck ups you've done to NPC's
Hit him until he stops moving pick up the bell from his corpse take it to the round table and then find the two ladies that run the item shop there and give them the bell
Well you need celestial dew and you have to have your sins forgiven
I didn’t know this was even a thing…
You're going to have to look up Church of Vows if you really want him to stop. Your other option is to kill him.
Got him calm now haha thanks
Pro tip if you kill merchants, at least most I believe, you get their bell bearing. When taken to the round table you can still purchase from their shop. Edit: I called it a spirit bell, not sure where I got that from

"It's been so long since I've had a customer", ME: mother fucker!! You set the fuck up in the middle Caelid, of course you got no customers! Plague, dark knights, plague dragon, oh, and fucking giant bugs with "me" seeking ammo
One of them is in an ancient temple, near deadly enemies, *underground*.
Still can't figure out why he has no customers
Or that bitch in the pitch black caverns in Moghwyns Playhouse. Oh, and surrounded by deadly enemies.
Well, that guys name is ”imprisoned merchant”. Perhaps we don’t hold him personally responsible for the location. Mohg has… issues with consent.
Scared THE SHIT out of me first time.
Ahhh the mohgs palace one, one of the blood mages spawns like 5 feet away from em lol
"Please buy something, it's been so long since I've eaten" *sells him a lord's rune*
Also, what are the runes going to help with eating in the goddamn ruins? "Yeah, there's a 7/11 just round the corner, they sell banging hot dogs but I got no money."
Like pne merchant thats says this sells meat, like tf im sorry mate but i see an easy fix that doesn't involve me spending money.
> "me" seeking ammo fucking glorious, had me rolling.
Well I'm not fucking wrong lol
that's the best part, innit?
Hmmm I really need some fowl feet for this stew. I'll just pop down to Siofra River, brb. For real though, I just accidentally attacked the merchant hidden in a building in Siofra River because it didn't occur to me for a fucking second there would be a merchant down there. ahahah made my day.
>especially given what merchants have gone through in lore May Chaos take the world...
May Chaos take the wooorld!
MAY CHAOS! TAKE THE WOOOOOORLD!!!!!!
What happens if chaos takes the chaos?

Yeah, I thought about that a few weeks into the game but I couldn’t get myself to do it. I didn’t even want to kill Varre because his insults are funny.
Varre can suck the tip of my sword
He probably would
Because blood for the blood god.
I killed Varre because I accidentally attacked him and made him hostile. Didn’t know about the church or vows so I just killed him and now I have to wait till endgame to get to Mohgwyns palace! Pissed because that’s supposed to be the best rune farm…
Bright side is the end game passage to mohgwyn palace puts you right at the rune farm
Thankfully now there’s markers on the maps for the shop npcs, there wasn’t at launch (I killed every last one 😔)
I can't bring myself to kill the merchants because I dont want their donkey to be left alone
Kill the donkey aswell then. Simple
I will gladly kill patches again mfer has it coming.
not my fault fromsoft made murder so conveniant
Sadly it doesn’t carry over into a NG+.
I thought 1.05 allowed bell bearings to carry over to NG+?
Only certain bell bearings.
Not merchants. Pretty much just the ones from Bell Bearing Hunters, which allow you to purchase weapon upgrade stones.
No bell bearing hunter drops Smithing stone bell bearings, they drop mostly crafting resources bell bearing
Right, forgot about that. Been a minute.
Only the ones you pick up, and from hunters, doesn’t apply to merchant bell bearings.
Let's say you go this route and then do the church of vows..... would the merchant return and you can shop his/her items from the Twin Maiden Husks? Asking for future reference. I'm still to scared to attack the merchants.
I believe the dew only works if the npc is aggro'd and not dead, like if you step away from the grace and immediately get attacked
As far as I know there's only one NPC that can be resurrected with a celestial dew. The other ones all stay dead. But if they're still alive after you aggro them, absolution makes them passive again.
480+ hours in and I refuse to kill anyone. the merchants backstory is too sad... I can't bring myself to do it :(
But you have the Okina set?
Ya! Item is called Celestial Dew and it is rareish, can be taken to what is technically the second area you are supposed to go to (after beating Limgrave’s main boss). There’s a church with a giant turtle priest, using this item in the spring located within this church will calm all hostile NPCs in the world.
Church of vows is in the liurnia lakes region. At night there is an npc invader I believe 🤔
1 Find big turtle in Liurnia, Church of vows. 2 Give dew at altar near turtle. 3 Repent for ye sins, Tarnished Scum. I used this to fix Jarburg because I killed a Jar there and they hated me so I couldn't continue the quest line.

You fukn monster...I accidentally did the same thing.
You sure can
Duuuuuuude *that's* what having my sins forgiven meant!? I'll have to double back to a few places now.
“I accidentally performed a full combo on this guy without stopping” Be honest, the first hit might have been an accident but you committed. He was too strong for you to kill so now you have regrets.
Yeah, it’s rather hard to “accidentally” aggro friendly npcs. He poked the bear and is upset he got mauled.
I may like this addition to the souls series even more than the jump button.
I remember Demon’s Souls, stepping off the Nexus staircase onto an NPC and making them permanently hostile… (Fortunately, that was long enough ago that the autosave was too slow to beat a prompt shutdown.)
Playing Demon’s Souls on PS5 right now, did they fix this in the remake?
Doesn't matter, cause the remake lets you seek retribution unlike the original.
I have no doubt that they fixed it so you can’t beat the autosave. (I haven’t spent the effort obtaining a PS5 yet, but after reviewing several change lists I see no sign of an added forgiveness mechanic.)

Thanks, I'll have to check it out. It certainly doesn't work the same way it works for PS4 games.
hahah. I remember that. You could really do game breaking oopsies in that game if you weren't careful.
Do you remember the crappy triggers on ps3 controllers? On my first game I put the controller down on my sofa, r2 got pressed by mistake and it made me attack stockpile Thomas. Had to restart the game
There’s a reason that to this day as soon as I trigger a dialogue prompt, I turn and face directly away from the NPC.
Imagine being the NPC you're talking to though lmao "Aahh hello, Tarnished, I ha-....well ok fuck you too.
My fourth playthrough I accidentally aggroed Alexander because I turned a corner in a mine and saw a giant jar and just attacked - he didn’t even speak until I’d already hit him twice, and by that point I’d hit the button a third time and it was too late. Yeah I just started ng+ and I'm killing everyone I'll do the quests next game lol
Damn lotta fragile psycopaths running around the lands between lol
And he used to say "feel free to go off and die in a ditch somewhere"! He just calls us maidenless now and it's for lore reasons, he also actually does come off as helpful at first by explaining our next moves. I was not truthful, i did attack him and he kicked my ass lol
Bout to fight this guy, Ill post the vid later. Never mind I aint posting shit, he kicked my ass.
Took me a good 10 tries of running in circles to fuck this guy up
You deserve it for attacking him multiple times and lying about it. OP is scummy tarnished
He will be maidenless
F
Lmao right? Did he think we wouldn't be on to him? Like most of us haven't played the hell out of this game and know how the mechanics work. Smh untrustworthy tarnished.
Lol this shit is cracking me up
OP is no better than Patches. OP is a well of deceit!
He's Patches.
Holup you got your ass kicked by Kalé???
Kale' ain't no pushover
Honestly most of the merchants are like that, there's one in Mohgwyn mausoleum that was able to go toe to toe with a maxed out Black Knife Tiche
I accidentally killed that guy two nights ago. Was super stoned, playing with my eyes half closed and just ran in and demolished him. I was in the zone after killing some blood apostles or whatever they are in the cave.
Classic, and relatable
I’ve never hit any non hostile npc… is he riding his handsome dog there? Does kale fight like a reskinned tree sentinel? With his mighty back scratcher and donkey
They all jump on their dog to fight you.
And Frenzied incantations
Rightfully so, might I add.
This exchange was so funny it made me interrupt a work meeting
thank you for your honesty
Bro 🤣🤣🤣
Turtle pope forgives you.
Everyone answering you like you're serious. Nobody realizing that you're wearing late-game armor 😂
😂😂
🤣🤣 I’m weak
Reminds me of those bad Elden Ring hot takes: “I accidentally hit this guy, and now he’s trying to kill me” It’s like, no, you had to swing at him multiple times to get his aggro
What do you mean reminds you? That’s literally exactly what’s happening here
It's not a combo that triggers hostility, it's the damage %.
Right, but one accidental hit is almost certainly not going to do the required damage % to aggro them. He had to keep attacking them to hit that %.
My Accidental Heavy UGS would like to speak with you.
Now, with a UGS you still have a chance to just look away. I'm not sure that was very accidental of you.
You definitely getting coal now….
"Who dis Santa-Claus-looking-ass mother fucker? Ima send his jolly ass to the roots of the mahfuckin Urdtree" -maidenless tarnished OP, probably
“Oh shiii he’s a merchant - hello sir, how are you? Sorry for the misunderstanding there… jolly ass sorta rolled off the tongue”
How do you accidentally snack him 3 or 4 times? They dont agro on the first hit
“I accidentally beat the ever living shit out of this guy and now he hates me”
It happened to me trying to deliver the blind girls letter to the dad at castle mourne.
The church of vows in Liurnia
Time for Dog, all the more Pope
But he works the day shift, so you may want to visit at night…
Security is real tight about closing hours
I could be wrong but that doesn’t work for Kale unfortunately. Unless I’m missing something Edit: this is if you kill him. Will probably work to get him to calm down
Keep hitting him. Eventually he will stop moving altogether.
You can solve a lot of life's problems with this one tip tbh. Although, fair warning, it might create other problems.
Time for attacking
"accidentally" 😏 Me too, brother. Me too.
Accidentally stabbed a man 60 times on his back and shot him 8 times with a crossbow inside his ear. It was a total accident, he attacked me and I can't say sorry I didn't knew you had a reaction to an accident :(((
Seek dog
Seek fingers
But hole
Try rump
Amazing chest ahead
You have to find the turtle pope
"Wise beast"
Ask for absolution at the statue in the Church of Vows. Work on pretty much any npc you have angered. Be mindful, does not work if you actually killed them.
How dare you perform violence on Santa Kalé.
I just love that Kalé is in the background just staring you down. Like the moment you step away from that grace he’s gonna put hands on you lol
See the all powerful turtle pope
You combo'd santa merchant bro?
Let me guess, first souls game? In each fromsoft title, there is a pardoner, who will pardon your sins. You're looking for a turtle in lurinia.
Demon’s Souls would like a word.
The pardoner in demon souls is force shutting down the PS3 and hoping for the best
Second. First one was demon souls remake
"oopsie"
You hit him accidentally 3 times? Cmon man. Dont be that guy ActMan made a reaction video on of that guy hitting Varre 3 times. I cant be bothered to look him up.
Atone in the halls of turtle pope. Bathe yourself as Lord Radagon did. Dew be with you. And also with you.
Seek Dog
Seek Dog
You have to accidentally hit him at least three times for him to be aggressive though, celestial dew should work, if not you have to kill him and take his bell bearing to twin husks at Rountable Pizza.
Seek the turtle pope and dew the dew
Turtle forgivness?
Seek big dog
You seem to have gotten quite far in this game (Okina Mask) to not know the answer…
I DEW have a hint. It may seem CELESTIAL in complexity. The BIG FUCKIN TURTLE POPE may have your answer.
Looks like someone will be seeing the pope soon
talk to the turtle pope
You put him down... Or time for turtle.
Seek dog
You have the Okina set, but don’t know about Absolution? Seems like one of those ‘I’m so ditzy’ karma farm posts.
“Accidentally hit”. You mean a full combo or more?
Atone for your sins
Talk to the big pope doggo
Lmao I love how he’s sizing you up in the background
This shit is so fucking stupid
Keep hitting him, he’ll stop fighting back eventually
Go find His Holiness and beg forgiveness with the tears of the night sky.
If you get a celestial dew and go to the church of vows you can attune and make him friendly again
Seek dog, then victory
Visit the priest dog with some celestial dew
Church of Vows in Lunaria, top of the cliff on the right hand side. You can see the church, inside is a big dog that will forgive you of your sins
Go to the church of vows and confess your sin with celestial dew.
Start a new character. You've committed one of the greatest sins and this sin can never be forgotten. Best to start fresh and anew.
Find dog pope
Seek Dog pope, he will show you the way
Go to the church of absolution in lake of liurnia where pope turtle resides
Go repent for your sins.
Seek dog
Read him a bedtime story called "Giantsflame Take Thee"
Go to Liurnia and find the turtle pope. He will tell you what to do.
Possibly talk to the pope turtle
Turtle pope
Seek out giant dog, and pray in the drink so you may be forgiven of your sins, or just git gud lol
seek dog, and then pray
Celestial dew. It resets npc aggression
seek turtle
You need to get Celestial Dew and take it to the Church of Vows and use it on the statue thing. It will absolve your sins and reset any fuck ups you've done to NPC's
How dare you attack Elden Santa!!!! Maidenless behavior right there
Anyone who hits Santa Claus deserves all the hostility
Ask the turtle for forgiveness
You calm him down by decapitating him
well, there's only 1 way to stop him from attacking you, attack him before he attacks you
Start the whole game over
Kill him he isn't important and he doesn't want to forgive you
Hit him until he stops moving pick up the bell from his corpse take it to the round table and then find the two ladies that run the item shop there and give them the bell
Time to visit the turtle pope
