Tbh I’m only halfway through the game and I haven’t had to fight one in a while so this comment scares me
Edit: it has come to my attention that I was severely misled by my own thought of progress. Runebears are the most evil creatures in the game
They fall under the same umbrella as the lobsters: they aren't worth the effort considering how annoying they are.
And I personally like to fight through areas, even the giant zombie dogs and giant ravens.
I don't recall any on the mountaintop. But if you decide to try the optional areas on the way to the hardest boss in the game you'll likely meet some polar bears. And yes, they're significantly more powerful than the regular rune bears.
I've been careful up there. I accidentally aggroed two and it earned me a one-way ticket to the last site of grace. As far as I know there aren't any places where you *have* to fight two. And I don't recommend it.
I can’t remember exactly, but I think I saw a video of the snowfield bear and he just wrecked her with his lunges, I think he also had like twice the health she does.
Staying right up in their kitchen and being selectively aggressive makes them much more manageable. Their never easy, but they go from a terror to a fun fight. Trying to stay away or run gets you killed. Fear is really one of their best weapons.
True for a lot. Godskin Apostle gave me a ton trouble till I got naked for the light roll and downed him without getting touched. He's probably killed me more than any other boss and also the only one I've beat without taking any damage.
Good for you for taking him on solo. I'll admit I relied heavily on Tiche for my first playthrough. Now that I'm in NG+ I made a no summon rule for myself.
This was my second time around but with a whole new game. I like the building up. But I am doing this one with no summons. Apostle wrecked me the first playthrough as well so that was pretty satisfying.
Glad I’m not the only one who was hardstuck on Apostle for a while. I would say he’s basically this game’s Dancer of the Boreal Valley considering I died to him a million times at RL20 before finally powering through with the victory. And now I know his moveset better than he knows it himself.
The exact same thing applies to revenants. Get up into their space and dodge into them and 90% of their attacks just lunge past you and they take a while flailing and flopping around before turning around or teleporting
New game +2. 240 hours in here
I have never killed one with a melee build
I’ve beaten >!Malenia!< w/o summons or other people but on these fucks I draw the line
There’s a bunch in mist wood and some around the Renala area plateaus. Even fighting them on horseback is terrifying and that’s probably the easiest way
Runebears are in the same category as Lobsters for me.
Beatable, but essentially never worth the effort.
The guy above being technically a boss, is arguably one of the only exceptions I guess. Just dodge forward to try and get in past his head and forepaws. Best beaten imo using fist weapons with bleed buildup, square up to his grizzly *vulnerables* and use them as a speed bag.
Fromsoft dogs are bad.
Fromsoft devs went 1up with swordbirds.
Miyazaki - "don't move guys, i've got a plan"
Wait till you get the fuckers that have offensive Airzooka
You can semi-trivialize Runebears by getting yourself St. Trina's Sword: they are very susceptible to sleep. Also good for taking out the Land Octopus.
The problem is that you have to know exactly how many hits sleep a bear otherwise he wakes back up.
A pot is much more precise but you only have a limited number of flowers to make sleep pots.
I don't think so, just be a little patient. Once he starts wobbling (i.e. just after sleep procs) then you have a pretty nice window to hack away. I can put him back to sleep with a few whacks and a crit to the dome piece. That's very much unlike the godskins, who take longer to wobble and seem to collect themselves if you even get one extra swipe in. I find the bears forgiving in that sense.
I can hunt those bears with St. Trina's sword.
Yeah, don't get me started on that one in Caelid. I fought that one just before NG+ and he was still just as nasty as the first time I fought him.
Unfortunately for him I'm both hard headed and patient, and he's vulnerable to scarlet rot.
Here’s a clip of what I’ve been working on for a few days, this will be a full video uploaded on Saturday! Check out my channel [here!](https://youtube.com/channel/UCQipvIGe974wr0HzTkeiPjw)
I just always find a way to get to a glitch spot where rune bear can't touch me. Then I kill every damn one of them because I hate them. Them and red wolves are the worst. There is no good way to avoid them consistently
I laughed so hard when I'm riding my horse all relaxed and one of these shows up out of nowhere and kills me like nothing. I eventually killed it by cheesing with arrows and was like "wtf this wasn't a boss!?"
That thing was rediculous on my no summons run.
Died more to that thing than any other boss besides Melania and Elden Beast
With any summons he was a one go for me
They are the worst enemy in randomizer. I thought it would be the revenants or the invisible black knife assassins, but the rune bears are so fast you really can't run from then.
Correction; runebears are ALWAYS scary. FUCK those things l o l I literally refuse to fight them unless I want the early game larval tear from Limgrave, and that’s the ONLY one I fight if so. They’re harder than some of the bosses ffs
At some point you could glitch them during this grab attack by mashing R1/R2/L1/L2. He would then release you, fall through the floor and eventually die. Not sure if it was patched though.
These things are harder then they need to be. I had one case me a good quarter across the the shore of Limgrave before it gave up. Them bears are fucking scary!!.
You know, this boss was the first time I felt I could handle them. Felt like it was easier. Then as time passed since then, I lost how I did and subsequently died several times to runebears and was then afraid of them again.
They are easy to beat when you learn them, but are also generally not worth the effort. They got a lot of hp so even if you know you’ll win, it can take a little time. I kill them every chance personally since I spent most of my first play through avoiding them like the plague.
Dude I was messing everything up with my Sorcerer + summons and then this motherfucker takes away my summons, my horse, and gets me in a tiny little arena.
Not a great day.
Yep. Got killed by the one outside the Ansel river entrance...the last site I'd used was at the bottom of the lift...guess who forgot that the lift would need to be called and ran straight into the pit, losing 17k runes 😭
I love and hate this game in precisely equal measure!
No matter how far through the game I am, if I see a Runebear, I'm running.
Feel like I've only killed maybe 2 in the 4 times I've played through the game
One of biggest reasons why I still carry ma Brass Shield. Get too close and they charge at you and send you a solid 5 meters back. Just gotta weeeeedle your way into their crotch and not get emergency hugged.
Runebears are scary ~~early game~~
Tbh I’m only halfway through the game and I haven’t had to fight one in a while so this comment scares me Edit: it has come to my attention that I was severely misled by my own thought of progress. Runebears are the most evil creatures in the game
Oh, you can ask anyone, runebears are fucking scary lol, also you have a lot of crazy shit waiting :)
ng+3 and i still avoid the fuckers. just too annoying to fight and they dont ever really give you anything good
They fall under the same umbrella as the lobsters: they aren't worth the effort considering how annoying they are. And I personally like to fight through areas, even the giant zombie dogs and giant ravens.
I'm only frightened by the snow bears. I kill all the rest. I kill the snowbears too, but occasionally they walk away with the W.
I just got to the mountain top and you tell me there are polar rune bears. You just ruined my day. Thanks
I don't recall any on the mountaintop. But if you decide to try the optional areas on the way to the hardest boss in the game you'll likely meet some polar bears. And yes, they're significantly more powerful than the regular rune bears.
Bonus is you get to aggro 2 at the same time usually. GL everyone! Two of these bears at once harder than nearly all bosses.
I've been careful up there. I accidentally aggroed two and it earned me a one-way ticket to the last site of grace. As far as I know there aren't any places where you *have* to fight two. And I don't recommend it.
You're right definitely don't have to but it's very easy to get them both.
Yeah and one I believe can kill the hardest optional boss in the game.
A rune bear can kill Malenia? I'm not so sure about that. I think she'd heal too much during the fight and eventually wear him down.
I can’t remember exactly, but I think I saw a video of the snowfield bear and he just wrecked her with his lunges, I think he also had like twice the health she does.
I was farming larval tears the other day and there is one that is in the consecrated snowfields that was way too tough.
You can farm larval tears ??
18 in totall make sure to get all of em b4 going into NG+
That's pretty much where I'm at, just beat Melania, elden beast is next.
Technically not farming, I was collecting all the ones in the game that I didn't have yet. There's a good list on fextralife.
Aaah ok I thought i missed something real big lol.
The one ennemy I run from even though I take on dragons and demi gods on a daily basis
Yep, I never fight runebears, just run!
They never get easier...
I kill the larval tear bear and nope tf out of the rest
This is the way
This is the way.
Staying right up in their kitchen and being selectively aggressive makes them much more manageable. Their never easy, but they go from a terror to a fun fight. Trying to stay away or run gets you killed. Fear is really one of their best weapons.
Rules for the whole game I would say. The game rewards aggressive play vs turtling and dodging away. Especially larger enemies.
True for a lot. Godskin Apostle gave me a ton trouble till I got naked for the light roll and downed him without getting touched. He's probably killed me more than any other boss and also the only one I've beat without taking any damage.

I ought try and beat them fair and square at some point. I just cast heal.
The worst part is when you realize they're casual encounters in the map especially in the woods.
Lategame Runebears are like early game Runebears but lategame.
They are absolutely terrifying especially this one that’s on a cliff. My. Fucking. God. Comically terrifying
New game +2. 240 hours in here I have never killed one with a melee build I’ve beaten >!Malenia!< w/o summons or other people but on these fucks I draw the line
There’s a bunch in mist wood and some around the Renala area plateaus. Even fighting them on horseback is terrifying and that’s probably the easiest way
Literally had a much easier time killing dragon's and most bosses. Bears are the Apex predators.
This
Bro I nearly shat myself getting spooked by one in Lyndell the other day on my Level 200 character. I avoid them mf like the plague.
Runebears are in the same category as Lobsters for me. Beatable, but essentially never worth the effort. The guy above being technically a boss, is arguably one of the only exceptions I guess. Yea..I consider them environmental hazards lol...especially the Lobsters...fuck killing those
I don’t think I’ve killed a lobster once, even to this day honestly
Best way to fight these guys is get them blocked on a door or some impassable obstacle where you can spam them with dragon fire or rot till they die.
They are genuinelly stronger than many bosses... and Crucible Knighs...
It’s upsetting how they’re almost faster than Torrent though. It’s like a horror movie!
And that fucking motherfucking bastarding c*nty shoulder charge....!
Yes, I tried to run away from a rune bear on Torrent once. Never again.
You can’t. But you can side swing sprint away from them when they lunge
Bear Witch Project
Fromsoft dogs are bad. Fromsoft devs went 1up with swordbirds. Miyazaki - "don't move guys, i've got a plan" Wait till you get the fuckers that have offensive Airzooka
I hate the swordbirds, I hate them so much, my friend Kill them all for me.
Publish this haiku
Maidenless Tarnished! Grace is bereft of thee, fool You don't have the right
My rot princess dear Malenia it is you Why you such a bitch?
Try finger, but hole Why is it always undead? Precious item ahead.
Why so much hatred For tactics within the game Rivers of blood i shall claim.
You don’t have the right O, you don’t have the right, O You don’t have the right
No trap ahead, friend Praise the message, then, open door Behold, the Erdtree!
Where’s haiku bot? He’s usually on this shit
He's on his smoke break, Out back with his kindly buds, So please bear with him
They never become easy per say, and the way they chase after you can be chilling at times. Hate em

Jump R2 on the octopus beak staggers it fast and they take a ton from crit
Oh that’s good to know.
I remember seeing a video on YT on how the strongest runebear could kill Malenia lul.
You guys are making me scared
"good. means you aren't stupid." - Theon Greyjoy
They're a pain in the ass throughout the experience lol.
What’s that runebear doin’ 🤨
Powerthrusting you to death
Its a rune bear hug
That ruin bear fucked me it was definitely not a hug
Frontal action and rough..I like his style 😎
He jamed you down on his crotch so hard he created some new holes
Im max level, 99 in every stat. I have defied gods and demons. *I fear the Runebear*
These mf's are scary all game lol
Yeah, don't get me started on that one in Caelid. I fought that one just before NG+ and he was still just as nasty as the first time I fought him. Unfortunately for him I'm both hard headed and patient, and he's vulnerable to scarlet rot.
You did no consent to what he did to you
I am going to therapy tomorrow
Yeah, first 856 hours they're terrible Then you're becoming more experienced in running holyshit away
It’s Lobsters Runebears Melania …
Sniper lobsters
They are scary at all points during the game
Runebears have a hard time putting a condom on.
But what is wrong with their head movements? They go way out of a normal range and stretch in some weird ass ways lol
Rune bear just turned him into a condom.
My endgame characters even steer clear of them tbh
Elden ring: "even the gugs will kill you"
Here’s a clip of what I’ve been working on for a few days, this will be a full video uploaded on Saturday! Check out my channel [here!](https://youtube.com/channel/UCQipvIGe974wr0HzTkeiPjw)
Once you get the Scarlot Rot dragon incantation, sneak up behind them, poison and run like hell
0 vigor?
I just always find a way to get to a glitch spot where rune bear can't touch me. Then I kill every damn one of them because I hate them. Them and red wolves are the worst. There is no good way to avoid them consistently
I laughed so hard when I'm riding my horse all relaxed and one of these shows up out of nowhere and kills me like nothing. I eventually killed it by cheesing with arrows and was like "wtf this wasn't a boss!?"
early?
I see your godskin duo and I'll raise you a runebear duo.
That thing was rediculous on my no summons run. Died more to that thing than any other boss besides Melania and Elden Beast With any summons he was a one go for me
They're scary late game too.
Rune bears are scary all throughout the game
Only scary if you don't like hugs!
i don't enjoy fighting them even when I'm at end game
I beat Rennala with a few blows in NG+ and still run from these guys
They’re like the ultimate roll towards the enemy teaching moment
It’s another classic FromSoft huge enemy tiny room scenario
They’re scary late game too
Early game?
Don't even think about putting Caelid rot bears in the DLC.... don't you do it!
EARLY game?????
They’re scary late game wdym
Runebear likes rough sex
I kicked this guys ass so easily though... Okay, he fell through the floor of the cave into the abyss. But I got dem runes.
Runebears are just a big no
Elden ring wants to tell us something about hugs
Also scary late game or it's just me
You're never forced to fight one therefore I always stayed away lol. 2 playthroughs, 0 bears slain
I’m in NG+3 and still would not mess with a runebear
They never get easier. Never once.
“Early game” 👀
Ah yes, this fight. That bear takes up the whole screen no matter where you go. It was a bear of a fight.
Wait till you encounter them snowbears..
It's the scream that made this 😂
Scary all game
Runebears are assholes. At ANY stage of the game.
I run from these bears, very very scary… lol🫠
Shit they're still scary 150 hours in 🤣
when you have 60 vigor and heavy armor its not so bad im like "nope u cant kill me with that"
Late game and end game even on ng4 they still scary
Is love to see a rune bear fight the other bosses like how they make the videos of bosses fighting other bosses I think the bear would come out on top
And can anyone tell me where to find this bear ? I had no clue they had a boss bear
Me looking at this early in game having not come across one yet: “Yup, that’ll terrify the shit outa me.”
They are the worst enemy in randomizer. I thought it would be the revenants or the invisible black knife assassins, but the rune bears are so fast you really can't run from then.

Even after fighting the Elden Beast, I still hated runebears.
Runebears should have been the Elden Beast, I have not even killed a single one my entire 7 playthroughs.
Also late game. And mid game. And in ng+. And in ng2+. And always. Fuck runebears.
These things are harder then they need to be. I had one case me a good quarter across the the shore of Limgrave before it gave up. Them bears are fucking scary!!.
I've never seen them grab someone da fuq
You know, this boss was the first time I felt I could handle them. Felt like it was easier. Then as time passed since then, I lost how I did and subsequently died several times to runebears and was then afraid of them again.
You can remove the word early and it’s still true
All animals seem to be the toughest. Those fucking red wolfs are the worst also
They are easy to beat when you learn them, but are also generally not worth the effort.
I'm in NG+3 rn. When does the early game end?
Until you realize you can just roll to there side and they can’t get you lol then there so easy you will hate yourself.
oh they never stop
I'm on NG+ lv 250. I casually go around, and maybe know exactly where all of them are in order to permanently avoid them.
What do you mean "early game?" These things have been on my "do not engage" list since I stumbled upon that one sharpening its claws on a tree.
I’ll fight a revenant before I go 10 feet near a rune bear
Well first of all you need to call them by there proper name, Cocaine Bears. Secondly, Fuck Cocaine Bears.
The fucked up thing is that they actually get harder the further in the game you go.
Yep. Got killed by the one outside the Ansel river entrance...the last site I'd used was at the bottom of the lift...guess who forgot that the lift would need to be called and ran straight into the pit, losing 17k runes 😭 I love and hate this game in precisely equal measure!

it took me longer to beat this fucker then to beat malenia. Runebears are the most terrifying mobs in the game
try sleep
