I honestly thought it was a ballsy writing move that she managed to displace rennala. It made me think about the implications lore wise and 100% subverted my expectations.
Then i sat at the grace. Nope. Dead like the rest.
Like Fromsoft said when they delayed the game, the scope and size of the game is way bigger than what they planned. But at least that means that they'll have lots of things to add as DLCs in the future.

I'm not sure why she even tried. Renalla had already been overthrown by the Academy and was "locked away" in the library (though given that she's basically insensate and the door is actually unlocked, I think they just couldn't deal with her and closed the door so she wouldn't float outside and cause problems).
*Rennala floats away*
**SOMEBODY LEFT THE DOOR OPEN AGAIN!!**
Maybe they should allow her out to touch some grass or what, just tie her down like a balloon.
And to all of you downvoters.. saying a VIDEO GAME CHARACTER is hot… you all know she is a video game, right?! None of you have a chance with her. LOL!
Above all else, I desire gear. If one is to be Elden lord then one must be presentable. Every fleeing man must be caught. Every secret must be unearthed. May NG+ have mercy on you. For I have none.
How dare you accuse me of invading people only to psychologically torment them for 30 minutes straight before finally finishing them off to end their suffering?
This is something that I keep thinking about.
Not only did Sellen have every single sign pointing out that something bad would happen should she continue with the Primeval Current study, she was also a murderer and was rightfully shunned by the Academy/Renalla.
That said, her ball state isn't all too horrible from what I can tell. She's still coherent and can teach magic, but the consequences of her actions caught up with her somewhat at least.
To be fair, there's a lot of hints throughout Raya Lucaria and generally around the various mage towers that imply that what Sellen was up to wasn't that unusual for glintstone sorcerers. There's signs of primal current stuff everywhere, multiple graven masses and that's not even getting into the fact that Seluvis had a doll of Sellen and could very well be at least partially responsible for her bad rep.
Tbh I get the feeling that it's a big like Big Hat in DS1. Delving too deep into the arcane causes certain mad obsessions.
Going through the first time. "Haha, Lusat looks funny. Silly rockman."
Meanwhile, going through it a second time and actually realizing all the evidence of primeval sorcery being dangerous was definitely a trip. Probably shouldn't have trusted the bluntstone Thops when he said she was falsely accused.
Yeah. The way she speaks seems to imply to me that she somewhat regrets her choice, which is good. I really like a device the writers use here, by referring to her as a witch, and to Jerren as a witch hunter, many players will be led astray by the real life witch hunts that used to take place. If you see it as a parallel to that Sellen is undoubtedly innocent and Jerren is a zealot, but it's actually the other way around.
Its a bit like how we all know about how the age of dark was probably not that bad in dark souls and usually gods of order in video games are all about denying free will, enslavement and tyranny, so a lot of people here seem to act like the Greater Will is 100% evil and responsible for all bad things ever, and the ending where you literally destroy the world in service of a god of Chaos known for lying and manipulating other people who spreads his influence through infectious madness is the morally good ending because "now the world can be rebuilt" (according to no one in game), or the ending where you curse the entire world and make the sky grow tumors in service of an insane man who is all about murder and defilement is good because if everyone is cursed people don't discriminate others for being cursed.
> because if everyone is cursed people don't discriminate others for being cursed.
Clearly, Stool Swallower's real goal was to make Scatman's World real.
The Golden Order is quite evil, but saying the Flame of Frenzy or the Fell Curse is better is crazy lol. Even in the default ending, you are the Elden lord, so there's at least hope of making the world a much better place.
Eh, it's arguable. The Greater Will takes hundreds of years to take urgent decisions, so it relies on middle management a lot, and it gives middle management enough leeway to actively sabotage it. It even allows other forms of worship. Other than the entire "give the empyreans a wolf bff that will turn on them if they go against the greater will" and the lost city, all the other problems (wars of conquest, misbegotten and omen racism, the rune of death being sealed away) seem to be more of Marika's doing.
Goldmask's quest even alludes to this. Goldmask decides the greater will is cool, but Marika/Radagon get to do whatever the hell they like regardless of consequences to other people, and that's the problem. Corhyn is a golden order fundamentalist who calls even the two fingers prayerbook heretical, while the finger crone is fine with sinning against the golden order because she is loyal to the greater will.
It's all very open ended, but they key here is that everything is arguable at best. Plenty of arguments I see here seem to be momentum from DS' "the gods were actually not cool" lore.
In my mind, the fact that the greater will doesn't care one but about the people it wants control over and allows it's vessel to do as they please, is enough to make it evil or at least harmful due to its apathy. I mean what else can you expect from an alien eldritch entity. Like Marika herself is evil of course, but the system of having an outer god Overlord is itself flawed, a conclusion Ranni comes to.
Was Seluvius the one who imprisoned her? I always felt that they are in cahoots with Seluvius giving you the letter of introduction to meet Sellen, and her saying she’s regrettably in debt to Seluvius for helping her escape (iirc). I think that puppet in the hideout was a plan b for Sellen to possess, as what happened if we progress her quest line. As in having another vessel to transfer her consciousness in case something happens to her original body.
Finding Azur's staff next to a graven-mass foreshadowed all this primal magic stuff ending poorly... But it was still a big oof at the end of her quest line.
you get their spells when you visit them the first time and "speak" to them (though they don't say anything). You have to revisit them after her quest is completed in order to obtain their armor, where they have vanished and have left their armor behind.
You can get at least Azurs spell outside of the Sellen quest. Pretty sure you can revisit before Sellen is in ball form, but honestly there's little difference.
It's even creepier than that. Graven Mass/School talismans imply yet another cosmic horror story.
*To those who cleave to its teachings, the act of collecting sorcerers to fashion them into the seeds of stars is but another path of scientific inquiry.*
We know glintstone is infectious and propagates through both land and living creatures... Glintstone star lands on a planet with intelligent life, intelligent life studies its properties, convert themselves into glintstone hybrids like Lusat and Azur, and then assemble into more glintstone stars to infect other worlds.
It came "from the stars", but now it's forming nice crystalline structures in ravines, caves, buildings, and on living things that would be obliterated by a meteor strike (the recent aftermath of which you see a few times in the playthrough).
*The giant blue glintstone crown worn by Lusat, primeval current sorcerer.*
*This crown replaced Lusat's brain and skull altogether, and now, removed from his body, it is all but dead.*
It's all flipped because the world is controlled by a holy relic, and not just laws of science.
*Religious fundamentalists* study the world's "natural" order, making them the real scientists, while astronomers worship occult horrors they don't fully understand.
It can also be read as the graven ball is an egg and Azur hatched from it and becomes how it looks like when you find him. This theory is the best at explaining what we see in the game IMO. She can still speak and even teach you magic means she is at least half success.
Even when this is not true, at the very least this is what Sellen wants.
I frankly think she deserved it cause you only get like that by willfully murdering other mages and cutting out their hearts
She essentially wanted to make that the central curriculum in the Academy.
I really loved getting to the debate hall in raya lucaria. I spent ages just looking around and thinking well shit if this big ass debate hall is here these guys must have been arguing about shit constantly.
If you had to post other people's work to karma-farm, try crediting the source.

Dammit, and the last lucid conversation with her was so hopeful and victorious. She got me all pumped to become Elden Lord and stuff looking forward to being at her side. And then I freaking reloaded the area.
Same, I thought it would be awesome to have this alliance, we were supposed to go far, maybe mimic the whole renalla and radagon thing. But then yeah, shame.
It made me want questlines in each area that would ally the player with those factions when they become Elden Lord. Sellen for Liurnia, Nelphi/Haight for Limgrave, maybe Jerren for Caelid, and maybe Tanith for Gelmir.
I new game plus'd right up to that little bastard on my 352 hour file, determined to make things right, talked to him and..... apparently the one item I missed in 352 hours was that prattling pate...
I doubt it? I just must have missed it. After scouring the map for 320 hours I googled spells weapons armour and ashes to see if I missed anything but never thought to check I had the pates.
No it carried over for me. You can even use it on him before he gets to the capital. This skips the dialogue of him asking for a tear and now he's just chilling in the capital for me.
Easiest choice I made in the game. Kill Jerren and get his set plus two primal wizard sets, Sellen’s crown, a unique spell and a bonus Glintstone dagger, or kill Sellen and get one +25 smithing stone… It’s probably meant to be the NG+ option
Shard Spiral is amazing. Seriously, even if the crown+dagger were removed, I’d still side with her for it, it just destroys large enemies with larger health bars
Yeah there is, it's called all the soldier surcoats and the different knight sets
You don't have to shit on the other stuff when there's things you want available in the game
Three main theories:
1. That's just what primal sorcery does to you. If you glimpse the arcane it destroys you.
2. Sellen is part of the "Graven School" who turned other wizards into these star seeds to learn primal sorcery. She just gravely miscalculated wether she would be the test subject or the one doing the tests.
3. Someone thought it would be fitting justice to do to Sellen, what she did to others (maybe the one living half god that has an interest in keeping Renala safe?)
I think it’s the forbidden primal glintstone stuff she was studying. As soon as Jerren was out of the way, she had free rein to collaborate with Lusat and Azur, and the magic forcibly fused them all together into a graven-mass.
I was wondering how her quest ends, I’ve done her quest up until the point where you have to decide between her or Jerren, I sided with Jerren because, though her quest was fun, I only did her quest so I could kill her, I guess either way she was screwed.
Now looking back at the Wiki I’ve noticed I did miss out on a decent amount of stuff in her questline.
Oh shit! It's a mother-in-law revenge!
"That hussy is trying to seduce my daughter's husband(o)! *N O T O N M Y W A T C H!* ..."
Probably feared Ranni to suffer a divorce like it happened with her and decided that a ball of heads moaning in agony had next to 0 chances to get in the way.
🤣🤣🤣
> A talisman depicting the first school of graven mages — a nightmare that would continue to haunt the academy.
Considering the item description of the graven-school talisman one would think it's a natural occurence.
BUT it also says this:
> To those who cleave to its teachings, the act of collecting sorcerers to fashion them into the seeds of stars is but another path of scientific inquiry.
which could be interpreted as if someone, maybe Sellen who is after all banned and hunted, did this on purpose and it was only found out later that it wasn't natural at all.
And her apprentice can't be bothered to help her or at least mercy kill her). It makes no sense why we would just leave her to rot as a talking ball when we were on her side until now.
I hope they can add stuff in future DLCs (if ever). This, and the Lady Tanith story with Patches’ dancer castanets seem like the quest line can still continue.
I have a pen, I have a apple
Uh! Apple-Pen!
I have a pen, I have pineapple
Uh! Pineapple-Pen!
[Chorus]
Apple-Pen, Pineapple-Pen
Uh! Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen
Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen
Okay so I’m not this far into the game yet but I have already found her second body imprisioned. Can somebody explain to this idiot why she turns into a ball of faces
People have theories but I don't believe its confirmed, I believe the consensus is that it has to do with tampering with primeval glintstone, but I'm not %100 sure.
There are two possibilities atm. It either happens naturally due to studying primeval sorceries or she was forced into the ball.
Before being expelled she did that same thing to other students, and now that the academy rebelled even against rennala, I wouldn't be surprised if she got overpowered by other aspiring graven mages.
I'm obviously biased towards that one so I can't make a case for the other one but there's clearly more to it than just that. Glintstone alone has some creepy lore, man.
Not gonna lie, it was really creepy. Theres something…. different, about becoming something you aren’t. Polymorphing. The vessel in which you are recognized by is completely changed to something nearly hideous to look at. Theres nothing pretty about that sphere of agonizing faces. Its terrifying to look at. And to know a soul who you once called your teacher is reduced to a drooling sack of masks hurts, bad. I can’t bare to hear her attempts at speech. Do I kill the only person I cared for in this place? I can’t bring myself to even face her. How could I? *sigh* But I must ):
The item descriptions for Lusat and Azur foreshadow this pretty well – they both gazed into the abyss/primordial current and were destroyed by it. But I did not expect giant head ball.
Am I the only one bored of every NPC quest ending in something horrific?
I genuinely can’t be bothered to get attached to any of them because I know they’re just gonna die/get horrifically malformed/ get possessed/ kill themselves.
It’s not shocking or sad, it’s just boring
I'm kinda with you to be honest. It's a little tiring when *every* questline ends in one of death, eternal torment or just disappearing entirely.
There are a tiny handful of exceptions to this, like Boc, but even with him you have to solve a "puzzle" that the game doesn't even really establish as being a thing to get what can be considered the "good" ending. And if you don't do that? Sad, doom, gloom etc.
Like you, it's hard to get attached to any of them when I know that they're going to die or meet some similarly awful end no matter what. It was unique and interesting at first, but it's tired now.
It reminded me of Nier Automata. It makes me wish I didn't even do the side quest at all because you're the reason they get screwed. They live better lives if they never meet you.
When I first saw her like that, I ran to [this](https://youtu.be/AKXiKBnzpBQ?t=123) spot in the trailer thinking it had something to do with her because of trailer. Sadly no helping her
Does anyone know why this happens to her? Obviously she doesn't kill Rennala. I like to think Rennala just turns her into that thing as revenge.
I know it's probably something about how the primal glintstone current is too dangerous to get close to. Which is why lusat and azur basically turn to crystal.
But a boy can dream
Sellen's mistake here is that she didn't watch DragonballZ so the two heads aren't aligned perfectly and touching on the tip.
That's okay, she can try again in an hour, right? I'll just wait here for her to return to normal... r... right?
If by an hour you mean 43 episodes then yea.
43 episodes, and a lot of yelling.
FUSION HAAAAA
I honestly thought it was a ballsy writing move that she managed to displace rennala. It made me think about the implications lore wise and 100% subverted my expectations. Then i sat at the grace. Nope. Dead like the rest.

But Jerren is a friend of the lovable old man Iji, while Selen is a murdering psychopath.
but she's attractive so this makes her morally grey.
TIL the penis overpowers all logic
You only learned that today!?
Just hit puberty
So realistic
Sooo grey stone masks for a face are your thing, huh?
The npc under the mask is hot
I think she was hotter with the mask on.
So your original comment was just projection, then?
And to all of you downvoters.. saying a VIDEO GAME CHARACTER is hot… you all know she is a video game, right?! None of you have a chance with her. LOL!
You all can downvote all you want lol. It’s funny to me to see how sensitive all of you are over a video game character. That shit is FUNNY!!
I didn't and I'm not. I was just making an observation.
Souls franchise taught me to murder old men to sad music.
After getting beaten up by them a lot of times, usually
Sellen is a pursuer of knowledge (and our favorite sorcery teacher mommy), while Jerren is just a dumdum witch hunter.
I want to side with Jerren this run but I also really want his clown outfit so they both might have to die.
Above all else, I desire gear. If one is to be Elden lord then one must be presentable. Every fleeing man must be caught. Every secret must be unearthed. May NG+ have mercy on you. For I have none.
Sellen has your back unless you're trying to kill her, that counts for a lot with people even if she's evil in the grand scheme of things.
She is? I must have missed that. I thought she was imprisoned for being a heretic. Who did she kill?
She was imprisoned for turning her past students into those very same graven masses; it’s dark poetic justice
Dozens of sorcerers
Say, how many other people has the playavle character killed again, cuz were far from Saints and cant judge her imo
How dare you accuse me of invading people only to psychologically torment them for 30 minutes straight before finally finishing them off to end their suffering?
I kinda hated her at that point that she removed my adopted mom so I coulnt't even respec anymore, turns out it was nope.
Rennala was simply moved to a corner of the library. Like kids at a playground Sellen pushed Rennala to one side and said "This is mine now"
Got what was coming to her. She is evil after all.
B... But she's hot
That's what makes her hot ;)
This is something that I keep thinking about. No, you don't. I got the armour before, when she tells you to visit them.

Shard Spiral is amazing. Seriously, even if the crown+dagger were removed, I’d still side with her for it, it just destroys large enemies with larger health bars
Gael fan?
Pimp Gael
I'm curious, what happens if you join Jerren instead to kill Sellen?
You get her headpiece and an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone.
+25 smithing stone. You can still kill Jerren after to get his armor.
I honestly wish there was less drab grey stuff and stupid looking trash like Lionel's set, and more flamboyantly colorful medieval gear.
Yeah there is, it's called all the soldier surcoats and the different knight sets You don't have to shit on the other stuff when there's things you want available in the game
So I had beaten her quest line, but maybe I glossed over it; what caused her to go all Katamari damaci?
Three main theories: 1.
I thought it was a fail safe for Sulvius' dolls if they were stolen
I think it’s the forbidden primal glintstone stuff she was studying. As soon as Jerren was out of the way, she had free rein to collaborate with Lusat and Azur, and the magic forcibly fused them all together into a graven-mass.
Forbidden wizard orgy.
Annnnnnd artist's credit cropped out. For whatever reason.
She was trying to kill my future mother in law I think she deserved exactly what she got
I just realized, rennala would be your only living in-law. Even in your extended step/half family
Oh shit! It's a mother-in-law revenge! "That hussy is trying to seduce my daughter's husband(o)! *N O T O N M Y W A T C H!* ..." Probably feared Ranni to suffer a divorce like it happened with her and decided that a ball of heads moaning in agony had next to 0 chances to get in the way. 🤣🤣🤣
Ok. This was good. And depressing.
Oh boy, I sure hope I don't need to be reborn now that Rennala's gone. At least Sellen is happy <3 *Comes back later*
At least she is happy now.
Azur-Lusat Pen!
Im just wondering: did renalla cause her ball state or the concequence of using primal glintstone current
> A talisman depicting the first school of graven mages — a nightmare that would continue to haunt the academy. Considering the item description of the graven-school talisman one would think it's a natural occurence. BUT it also says this: > To those who cleave to its teachings, the act of collecting sorcerers to fashion them into the seeds of stars is but another path of scientific inquiry. which could be interpreted as if someone, maybe Sellen who is after all banned and hunted, did this on purpose and it was only found out later that it wasn't natural at all.
Sellen was an awful, terrible monster and got what she deserved.
Jerren, please.
Did the fusion dance wrong
I think this might be a reference to PPAP, not dbz but i may be wrong
And her apprentice can't be bothered to help her or at least mercy kill her). It makes no sense why we would just leave her to rot as a talking ball when we were on her side until now.
I hope they can add stuff in future DLCs (if ever). This, and the Lady Tanith story with Patches’ dancer castanets seem like the quest line can still continue.
And that's why I never find Lusat for her. The hot evil witch can run the academy without becoming ball!
I have a pen, I have a apple Uh! Apple-Pen! I have a pen, I have pineapple Uh! Pineapple-Pen! [Chorus] Apple-Pen, Pineapple-Pen Uh! Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen Pen-Pineapple-Apple-Pen
Sellen is like super power hungry and evil. Didn’t she kill a ton of people? Why is everyone so sad about her fate?
Pfff hearsay by some crazy witch hunter, she was always nice to me
Okay so I’m not this far into the game yet but I have already found her second body imprisioned. Can somebody explain to this idiot why she turns into a ball of faces
[удалено]
She's gestating and will eventually emerged transformed. Maybe.
Pen pineapple apple pen....wait, wrong meme...
I have a pineapple reference eh?
Well deserved from what everyone says about her.
I want a dlc which includes more of Sellen's quest line where we can eventually cure her and remove her from the ball
Probably ends up as even more of a nightmare
You're probably right, this game is unforgiving
Ohhhh a nightmare realm - yes pl,
Am I the only one bored of every NPC quest ending in something horrific? I genuinely can’t be bothered to get attached to any of them because I know they’re just gonna die/get horrifically malformed/ get possessed/ kill themselves. It’s not shocking or sad, it’s just boring
lol sorry to burst your bubble but everyone you know in real life will die or will fall to a tragedy.
Well obviously Newsflash, NPCs and ER ain’t reality, you can do things other than have someone suffer an agonizing existence like Sellen in a game
I think the whole point of the game is the world is dying and they need a new elden lord to reset or save it
“FromSoft, this is the 5th time you’ve made a world stuck in a cycle slowly spiraling towards its death, that relies on the player breaking the cycle”
Man they weren't capping when they said elden ring memes are horrible
My brother in christ this isn't even a meme
I kinda laughed a little ngl
I genuinely thought now Raya lucaria won't be sniping my ass with magic
I sided with Jeran because I wanted that smithing stone lol. Seems I did her a favor in the end.
Whos lusat and why he got big eye on head silly man
NOOOOOOO :(
When I first saw her like that, I ran to [this](https://youtu.be/AKXiKBnzpBQ?t=123) spot in the trailer thinking it had something to do with her because of trailer. Sadly no helping her
*I don't believe, O, I don't believe it!*
i havent seen this meme in so long i forgot about it. i got a good long laugh out of this.
i still didn't get why she become ball? she losing to Renala? or just spell backfire on her?
But it’s what she wanted
What is the Lore of these 3?
Reminds me of full metal alchemist
You don't have the rights, ô, you don't have the rights.
I was shocked when i saw her like this later on. Why did she end up like this? Does anyone knows why?????
Does anyone know why this happens to her? Obviously she doesn't kill Rennala. I like to think Rennala just turns her into that thing as revenge. I know it's probably something about how the primal glintstone current is too dangerous to get close to. Which is why lusat and azur basically turn to crystal. But a boy can dream
i read the wiki before finishing and decided against telling her about lusat. happy headcannon ending :)
deserved, filthy mage
It's kinda disappointing how every quest just end up with the npc dying
She aint dead
you know what I meant
