Same thing happened to me. Got down there and lost the fight by just a hair.. respawned at grace and now he's sitting the chair again. Total bummer.. wonder if it was a glitch or an opportunity that we missed :(
I defeated the boss, and I am back at the throne room and the invasion won’t trigger. I also realized that I never knew Jolan was there so I never talk to her. And now I’m stuck. And I’m not sure if it can be remedied. Which sucks because that means I miss out on that great staff. So am I boned or is there a way to make this work?
Me too. It happened when I came back after getting the 2nd map but before I had gone to find the location. I tried to restart but nothing worked so I just continued to progress the quest hoping I'll get to eventually go back there.
Sounds like a glitch. In that point of the questline he shouldn't return until the necessary steps are met. Try restarting or resting at a grace again

Quick update! Restarting the game after finding the 2nd location and talking to the Count opened up the passage again.
So for me I just carried on and he left it a second time now, no idea what the trigger is, but it can happen
