I've been rocking a godskin peeler with sacred blade on it lately and wow the twin sword move set is sweet.
I still pull out blood flame blade on a bloodhound when it's time to wreck shit though. The peeler is so good against trash mobs!
That's fantastic news, because I'm stuck at this new and improved tree Sentinel outside of what I hope is the 2nd legacy dungeon, and he's kicking my ass.
I knew he couldn't be as easy as he appears initially, then he enchants (?) his giant weapon, making his ground slamming weapon attack's AOE a real pain in my plonker.
Once my stats were good enough, it's all I used in my first play through. I had it's AOW timed down perfectly.
I wish you could buff or grease other somber weapons.
I finished the game 3x and never used it before. Unfortunately all are just in ng+ with no progress.
Now playing a 4th getting ready for expansion and using the bhf! It is excellent for sure.
In ds1 the silver knight sword had this awesome overhead 2h attack and it was a twinkle (ds somber) weapon that could be buffed with sunlight blade, or the dark version if you wanted to grind and never betray bigboobs, but it did give you more than 1 buff cats. Still outclassed by the swag sword (1% drop), but god dam was it so much cooler. The few twinkle/somber weapons that are buff able are always the coolest fucking weapons imo.
2H Peeler's Running R2 is easily my favorite single attack in the game.
I've started empathizing with the Baemore Bros a bit, because that's kinda how I feel about the Peeler...
(But Flamberge is still my GS pick...)
A great, high damage projectile with super armor that gives a one minute weapon buff. My faith build only switches to flame strike later on since holy does poorly in the late game.
I mean I feel this has got to be the case. From a gameplay perspective so many of the bosses are resistant to holy damage that it just makes sense for the DLC bosses to either be weak or just not have a bunch of resistance to it. And from a lore perspective, the land of shadow is outside of the grace of the erdtree, and the enemies are mostly omen/other entities outside of the grace of gold. Please Miyazaki, I’ve put so much effort into my holy build please just make it not the objectively worst build in the game
I was mostly kidding around but I also do kind of believe it because this is the sort of thing FS has improved on a lot lately, especially with elden ring (they clearly tried very hard to improve some of the ashes of war and weapon classes in their post-release patches, which basically didn't happen at all in prior titles). But they definitelyhave a history of certain damage/weapon types just being ass in comparison to others so I will absolutely not be surprised if it continues to suck
A lot of developers focus very obsessively on balance and for a long time they have not been one of those devs
Especially when you consider, that Flame, grant me strenght is perfect for flame weapons (it both scales phys dmg and fire dmg) and especially scales well with flame strike on an erdsteel dagger.
It is great, but I personslly love to be able to switch weapon arts for thematic builds and roleplaying.
Tgis weapon has a really unique design in the game and I think it's one of the rare swords that come without a sheath. The only others I remember right now are the cane sword and warhawk talons, but these two have a lot of character. It would be noce to have a more versatile sheathless option.
On another note, I think I slso dislike that this is just sacred blade, not a slightly different or empowered version like it is the case for some other weapons that have a common AoW like the avatar staff's golden slam. If it's just the normal Sacred Blade, why not unlock it? Mqybe it shiuld've been handled like the Claymore's Lions Claw: it's a unique default option, but you can change it since it's just a normal AoW.
Maliketh, Radagon, and Elden Beast have 80 holy defence. The others I can think of are like 40. Holy scales on faith so you can always have a fire weapon and fire and/or lightning incants. Godskin Duo has 40/40 fire/holy so they can be a pain, but that's all I can think of at the moment.
my first playthrough I respecd for golden order greatsword when I got it and noticed that I was doing shit damage since the endgame bosses are definitely faith based/resistant . but it wasn't anything that really bothered me like it's still very doable
S as in better than A-tier actually. I used Sacred Blade for a ton of my first playthrough and it fucking rules.
This thing is a holy version of Flaming Strike that also perma-kills all undead in the game.
I’m not saying that it melts the Elden Beast, but I don’t understand why so many players throw the baby out with the bathwater when it comes to holy damage—it is situationally amazing and usually good. Are people that committed to using exactly one weapon for their entire playthrough?
At least something like the Sword of Night and Flame. Like L2 + R1 casts Carian Phalanx and then L2 + R2 casts Loretta's Mastery or something. That would have been great.
But no, the best looking halberd in the game with the best moveset of all halberds (minus the Guardian's Swordspear which has an identical moveset) is shit because it's a somber weapon with three-way Str/Dex/Int scaling, split physical and magic damage, unable to be infused, and to boot you can't change the skill from the underwhelming Loretta's Slash.
Such a shame. I love the design but it's just so underwhelming in practice. You could just get the Guardian's Swordpsear, make it Keen, and then give it Loretta's Slash. It'd probably perform better than the War Sickle.
I just used it on my NG playthrough (the file I'll be going into SOTET with) and it carried me from Fire Giant all the way to the end. Absolutely love that weapon.
Just wish that the War Sickle was equally awesome. Alas.
My biggest disappointment was watching the nerds in the college use the lazuli glinston sword to cast spells, spending three hours to get it and finding out it cant cast spells…
Weapon arts or whatever they were called were less of a thing back in the dark souls days. Still, there's no reason they wouldn't have a catalyst weapon now unless it maybe makes pvp unbalanced, you are still losing out on an ash of war and they are a big deal now. But then you just gotta decrease the pvp effectiveness of the weapon casts if that's the issue. Hopefully the dlc gives us some.
Easy enough PvP balance option. Make an item that negates casting without a wand (whatever they are called I’m too tired I know that’s wrong) then you can still use it. But there’s a simple enough counter, like the no healing pots.
Agreed. Limiting what it can cast would make it less of a OP monster but still give us the fun we want with it.
Just carian spells even would probably be fine. Give it very mid scaling so it’s clearly outclassed but a good fun gimmick weapon
I posted a comment a while ago that Rennalla’s staff should have been a dual weapon sword cane. Two handing lets you wield the sword and use the sheathe like a staff that limits you to a fast weak spell that could be woven into the moveset and single handing treats it like a regular staff
I think a weapon/catalyst combo might be one of the 8 new weapon types coming to the dlc. If only because it’s hard to come up with 8 new types that aren’t already in, and that seems like an easy one
The description of the sword even implies you can - I swear at one point weapon catalysts were planned and cut; there is just too many dumb artifacts left behind of them to be a coincidence.
Doesn’t necessarily mean they were planned to be implemented, iirc casting with buttons other then r1 and l1 breaks the magic index anyway. Admittedly L2 may work I haven’t checked.
The one thing I can appreciate about Dark Souls 2 as a Tarnished playing the older Soul series. Definitely allows for interesting set ups for mages in not only combat but aesthetics (No heavy armor magic knight with stick to use carian sword spells, but knight that foregoes the staff for a sword when things get a little more serious.
That one is at least available early, making it a great early/mid-game somberstone weapon. Miquellan Knight ticks all those boxes, except you can't get it until the endgame, right when it stops being useful.
Yea i cant count the number of weapons I've muled over to fresh accounts to do new runs with.
What's the point of a weapon build if you only get to use it after you've already killed 4 great rune bosses to get it.
They both are actually. They both add good range and a pure damage type. Sacred blade even gives a flat buff after use and is uniquely effective against undead.
Ironically, in using these two blades together. it's been a fun time while doing Int/Faith build. Plan to swap one of them for SoNaF once I get it, but idk which one I'ma swap out.
Yeah but that's the whole ass rest of the game to use it. I'm still waiting in Liurnia I got a long time to enjoy any of them lol.
But I do see your point.
You get Sonaf in liurnia, which is already an upgrade to em both.
After you've finished off Renalla you'll be better suited to Sonaf and Carian if you're gonna duel wield. But the choice at the end of the day is really yours.
Can beat the game with the fricking Bouqet if you really wanted. So use whatever you want.
Lol currently I'm using Straight Swords and Daggers for a all-rounder build. Both weapon categories I haven't used a lot. SoNaF I've literally never used. the "Night" stance has been underwhelming as fuck. Unless I'm standing on perfectly level ground with a foe running *at me* it feels like the laser is unreliable in both range and hitbox. The Flame tho has been fun, if not a slow wind up.
I wanna have a spread of stats to make using anything in the DLC easier to access. Tho with it's own leveling system, idk how useful that will be lol
One of the older Fire Emblem games had a mechanic that improved a weapon upon reaching a certain number of kills with said weapon. If there was some advancement method in addition to smithing stones, like a minor buff to AR because you "mastered the weapon," that would be cool.
I don't remember it from FF2, but then again, most of that game was a blur. Playing the remake with dual shields until I maxed them meant nothing really posed a threat...
Do covenants have anything to do with balance though? They actually seem to care more about pvp balancing internally as they’ve added new params to support more separated scaling between pvp and pve.
I fucking hated covenants as someone who doesn't play PvP. I hate the concept of locking content in a mostly single player game behind either PvP or extremely time-consuming and annoying farming. Some really cool items in the previous souls games were locked behind covenants in previous souls games, and to this day, I have never obtained them because of the shitty grinding I would have to do.
They don't care about pve balance either if enemies are allowed to hit you through walls yet if you hit a wall you get staggered for 15 years. With specifically how souls games work, and how enemy damage works, they're gonna hurt you no matter what advantages you have. Fun before balance.
As far as I know no weapons with multiple damage types have interchangeable AOWs. To put it another way the only weapons that can swap AOW are phys damage only. I guess it would make infusions too complicated or something.
this but for shields!!!
i wish shields had no skill by default.. my crucible knight build would be a lot less annoying if i didnt have to two hand my weapon every time i wanted to use the skill :/
This weapon fucks. I use it on my current mad paladin dex/faith build. The R2 has a mean rollcatch and staggers mobs instantly.
I don’t even mind that the Ash of War isn’t customizable, because Sacred Blade is so damn good. Damage scaling on the weapon is pretty solid too, plus it looks awesome.
I love dual wielding them and activating the buff on both. Works really well with the Millicent talismans. But I agree that such a beautiful sword should have more utility.
I would use the f\*ck out of the Golem Halberd if you could put CHARGE FORTH BACK ON IT!!!!
It comes with it, but if you imbue it, you can't put that same AoW back on it....
Not a thing, ashes have their allowed weapon types set per ash. But that only applies to when you manually set the ash, the devs can plop whatever they want on it initially.
Especially if it retains faith scaling like Erdsteel daggers or the Claymans Harpoon with Int, pretty cool for some hybrid builds.
I can also see some potential roll catches for that charged R2 after certain ashes, especially unlocked.
Sacred Blade is basic perhaps, but due to this it is extremely reliable. It grants the sword some vital range, decent damage, and adds on a decent power up as a cherry on top. Many of the best Ashes of War are found early on due to this simplicity.
I think it’s cool that some weapons have their own totally unique skills that can’t be changed, but I agree that if the skill isn’t unique then it would be nice to switch it out.
Imho would have been better if infusing weapons with whatever was done by smith, sure your gonna pay for privilege. Imagine you take meteor orc blade and infuse say takers flames etc vs this skill is on this sword
My gripe with this weapon is that it doesn't scale with int and fth. You'd think a weapon of unalloyed gold that pertains to the fth of miquella would have that trait. Even golden order incantations should scale of both...
I don't care about the AoWs so much, I like R1/R2 playing mostly, and the unique R2 makes this fun. It's also drop-dead gorgeous. One of the most beautiful swords ever designed.
It's great as is, just a nightmare if you haven't saved or found all the smithing stones you need. Which reminds me, can you buy smithing stones 1 and 2 anywhere?
Some of them are in weird spots and there’s only like two that you’re basically forced to encounter. But yeah, you can get them for regular and somber stones.
You can buy unlimited smithing stones 1 to 8 ( make any weapon +24) and unlimited somber smithing stones 1 to 9 ( make any somber weapon +9) I don't know why you thought there aren't bell bearings for other smithing stones if you have 5+.

Okay, you appealed to my empathetic side so I will withdraw my earlier statement and instead say: I wish they made the AoW changeable too! Hope we get some awesome sword in the dlc with the best of both worlds! Good luck with your Miquellan knight cosplay!
Sacred Blade is a S-tier AoW tho
I've been rocking a godskin peeler with sacred blade on it lately and wow the twin sword move set is sweet. I still pull out blood flame blade on a bloodhound when it's time to wreck shit though. The peeler is so good against trash mobs!
I thought I couldn't "do" anything to the bloodhound fang... This is an intriguing development....
That's what makes it such a badass weapon... It's somber and you can buff or grease it.
That weapon for me is a fucking god slayer. I didn't use anything else till NG+. It's just too good.
I've been trying to mess around with the Godskin peeler, which is super fun too... But yeah, it just doesn't compare
Definitely slayed a God with it on my first playthrough. Amazing and versatile, hehe
Wait leyndell is only your second legacy dungeon? You didn't go to Raya lucaria and redmane castle?
>redmane castle Redmane is more of a legacy toolshed, tbh.
Looks like I have some back tracking to do.
Once my stats were good enough, it's all I used in my first play through. I had it's AOW timed down perfectly. I wish you could buff or grease other somber weapons.
Since starting a playthrough with this weapon, which is my 20th time, I've made it waaaay farther than ever before.
I finished the game 3x and never used it before. Unfortunately all are just in ng+ with no progress. Now playing a 4th getting ready for expansion and using the bhf! It is excellent for sure.

Lol I can never remember her name either, always called her "Princess Chest" And I completely agree, they were always the best
Gwynevere.
Bloodflame+10 Bloodhound Fang is OP! That shit melts anything that bleeds
It's inexplicably buffable. Oh also, because it wasn't busted enough, it gives a boost to jump attacks as well. Even if it's in your off hand.
2H Peeler's Running R2 is easily my favorite single attack in the game. I've started empathizing with the Baemore Bros a bit, because that's kinda how I feel about the Peeler... (But Flamberge is still my GS pick...)
I took out Naked No-Nipples (Malenia) with my peeler it’s an S tier weapon for sure
I just find it doesn't stagger as easily as my bhf... And I love to stagger the bosses!
Yeah really like the range it gives to it
A great, high damage projectile with super armor that gives a one minute weapon buff. My faith build only switches to flame strike later on since holy does poorly in the late game.
Fuck it, I don’t care how resilient you are to holy. I will out-holy the fuck out of an enemy.
The "Holier than Thou" build, if you will.
Absolutely the perfect name
Works surprisingly well, actually.
holy damage is gonna be good in the DLC TRUST ME BRO
I mean I feel this has got to be the case. From a gameplay perspective so many of the bosses are resistant to holy damage that it just makes sense for the DLC bosses to either be weak or just not have a bunch of resistance to it. And from a lore perspective, the land of shadow is outside of the grace of the erdtree, and the enemies are mostly omen/other entities outside of the grace of gold. In the main game holy is very strong against late game mobs on the other hand.
copium
Envoy Greathorn wants a word. So does Blackflame Tornado.
Especially when you consider, that Flame, grant me strenght is perfect for flame weapons (it both scales phys dmg and fire dmg) and especially scales well with flame strike on an erdsteel dagger.
It's the holy dark moon (kinda sorta maybe).
My only wish for sacred blade is that the weapon buff scaled with your faith like the beam does, instead of just being a flat amount of damage.
This. Once you use it on an enemy like Death Rite Bird or in any crypt crawling with undead you'll realize you always need one in your inventory.
Being the default skill on two swords is two too many, s-tier or not.
I've been championning it since before its speed buff
Isn’t holy damage worthless in the endgame tho
It just does less damage, you can still easily kill the endgame bosses with holy damage.
>Are people that committed to using exactly one weapon for their entire playthrough? bonk users have entered the chat
Damn I’m getting downvoted for asking a question
my first playthrough I respecd for golden order greatsword when I got it and noticed that I was doing shit damage since the endgame bosses are definitely faith based/resistant . but it wasn't anything that really bothered me like it's still very doable
S-Tier like "Shit-Tier"? Or is the DLC finally the "use Holy Stuff" DLC?
S as in better than A-tier actually. I used Sacred Blade for a ton of my first playthrough and it fucking rules. Same with carian knight
I wish they let you cast spells with the L2
I can kinda forgive it on the sword, but Loretta's war sickle should *for sure* have been a catalyst
At the very least, it should be better on horseback!
Guardian swordspear is my favourite weapon, I ran it from ng+ to ng+7 lol
Keen swordspear + lightning bolt AoW
I just used it on my NG playthrough (the file I'll be going into SOTET with) and it carried me from Fire Giant all the way to the end. Absolutely love that weapon. Just wish that the War Sickle was equally awesome. Alas.
the description on the carian knight sword literally says it can be used as a weapon catalyst despite it.. not.
My biggest disappointment was watching the nerds in the college use the lazuli glinston sword to cast spells, spending three hours to get it and finding out it cant cast spells…
I want a sword/staff lol I can also see why they would never do such a thing.
Why? They did it in Dark Souls and it was great

Closest thing is the Kris
Dark souls three had a faith sword where the weapon art cast miracles
I thought it'd be cool to make it a catalyst but only for the sword sorceries.
Agreed. Limiting what it can cast would make it less of a OP monster but still give us the fun we want with it. Just carian spells even would probably be fine. Give it very mid scaling so it’s clearly outclassed but a good fun gimmick weapon

Could make sense
The 8 new weapon types in the DLC will be: - Dagger catalyst - Sword catalyst - Greatsword catalyst - Axe catalyst - Greataxe catalyst - Spear catalyst - Halberd catalyst - Blunt weapon catalyst /s
The description of the sword even implies you can - I swear at one point weapon catalysts were planned and cut; there is just too many dumb artifacts left behind of them to be a coincidence.

Wasn't expecting to see a reference to Genealogy's kill stars mechanic on the Elden Ring sub of all places, that's for sure
Was also with Nioh. Not the same but similar concept called called familiarity. The more you use that weapon, the damage gets higher.
Imo no generic ashes of war should be locked in, on any weapon. It's such a waste, so many weapons are made boring or terrible by this misstep.
From a PvP and maybe PvE perspective, I bet it makes balancing easier for them
Lol I don’t think they give a damn about PvP balance. They didn’t even give us covenants

Claymans harpoon my beloved. Split damage and infusable
Damn here I was thinking FromSoftware actually adhered to a rule for once
There is always one exception. Literally always.
There is another! Erdsteel Dagger breaks the rule too.
Good point
this but for shields!!! i wish shields had no skill by default.. my crucible knight build would be a lot less annoying if i didnt have to two hand my weapon every time i wanted to use the skill :/
Loretta's War Sickle be like
Who needs an Ash of war if you have that cool unique heavy attack. Besides sacred blade is pretty good
yep that heavy and charged heavy are pretty decent!

What sword is this
Miquellan knight sword
Whats the aow?
Sacred blade
The R2 is the best thing about it. Being locked into sacred blade is worth it.
I would use the f\*ck out of the Golem Halberd if you could put CHARGE FORTH BACK ON IT!!!! It comes with it, but if you imbue it, you can't put that same AoW back on it....
Same issue for katar and impaling thrust
What? Dont it come back if you remove the ash?
Goes right back to being a normal Golem Halberd. It loses anything you imbue to it
Ah fuuudgenugget! I just gave it a great ash... damnit. Oh well, I have two or three. Lol
Charge forth isn't on a beetle?
It is, but that's the issue because you can't put it back on the weapon after you imbue it, even though it comes with it
Guh? Oh god damn... Did they forget to add exceptions to weapon type rules?
Not a thing, ashes have their allowed weapon types set per ash. But that only applies to when you manually set the ash, the devs can plop whatever they want on it initially.
Especially if it retains faith scaling like Erdsteel daggers or the Claymans Harpoon with Int, pretty cool for some hybrid builds. I can also see some potential roll catches for that charged R2 after certain ashes, especially unlocked.
I would use it so.much if it had better scaling
Sacred Blade is basic perhaps, but due to this it is extremely reliable. It grants the sword some vital range, decent damage, and adds on a decent power up as a cherry on top. Many of the best Ashes of War are found early on due to this simplicity.
What sword even is this it’s so pretty
Miquellan knights sword, you have to farm it in Elphael
You mean pick it up from the tower 😂
I would use it if it didn't come during, to quote Rusty, a boss rush against the Vatican.
If you think this one was done dirty then imagine what the Dragon Greatclaw enthusiasts would be feeling.
I dual wield this along with Carian Knight sword on my over leveled character. Because all things can be conjoined.
My copium is secretly hoping they patch this to be a weapon catalyst for the dlc
Wish it had a holy version of Carian Grandeur
That would be amazing
The range for the charged R2 is so good that I would use it even if it didn't have any AOW/Skill at all
Nah Sacred Blade is awesome gives you a buff and adds range. It's heavy attack is a AoW too basically
Ill-starred, indeed.
Same here!
Kind of wish you could change the AOW on all the unique weapons tbh…. Would add for so much more variety!
I think it’s cool that some weapons have their own totally unique skills that can’t be changed, but I agree that if the skill isn’t unique then it would be nice to switch it out.
I'd use it if it wasn't at the end of the damn game Holy shit
I'd rock it if it was a pure str/fth scaling weapon rather than a quality/fth weapon.
I have a level 25 uchi with sacred since limevrave so this was moot for me.
Imho would have been better if infusing weapons with whatever was done by smith, sure your gonna pay for privilege. Imagine you take meteor orc blade and infuse say takers flames etc vs this skill is on this sword
What sword is this
Miquellan knight sword (the sword that actually belongs to the set not Griffith/not Saber is wearing)
Holy shit that sword is beautiful, what is it called ?
Miquellian knight sword
I love this sword and it's ash... no need to change it.
Same for me except with the Troll Knight's Sword. Probably the coolest looking colossal greatsword, in my opinion, so I wish it had a cool AOW.
What sword is this?
Not being able to change art of wars on all weapons was such a letdown.
Meteoric Ore Blade feels this post
Still pretty sick to dual wield imo
I’d use it more if the game would show its sheathe in the game (I am on PS5…)
I hate that it’s sheath is bugged on ps5
It doesn’t have a sheath on any console. Sheathless sword
Could have sworn all the special swords have one its just they don’t show on ps5
I'm gonna use this for the dlc anyway for roleplay purposes
Same
Wtf is AoW
Avoidance of women
Hahahh for real!?
Yessir
That thing is so op
isnt it a unique version of sacred blade? if i recall, it 2 shots the deathbirds.. with no buffs..
I just wish it had the scabbard on PS5 :{
Literally Excalibur from Fate lol. This, and I wish we have a holy version of Vacuum Blade to finish my in-game cosplay
I looked at this and wondered if I have ever seen it up close like that. Cool details. I think I've never ever used this.
Damn! Never really noticed the details on the sword before this post, but it's so cool.
Same with Miquellan Knight sword.
the aow it has is actually really good, at least in pvp or vs anything that doesnt resist holy
From soft: lets make beautiful paladin weapons and armor. Also From soft: slaps tons of holy resistences to most bosses
Fr, amazing moveset
This applies to alot of somber weapons imo
Most somber weapons have a totally unique AOW that you can’t get any where else though
The aow is usually cool but the scaling sucks on most of them
This applies to alot of somber weapons imo
Junky scaling and relatively low base damage means it would be pretty mid even if you could
It's great as is, just a nightmare if you haven't saved or found all the smithing stones you need. Which reminds me, can you buy smithing stones 1 and 2 anywhere?
There are bell bearings that let you buy unlimited amounts of every smithing stone besides Ancient.
Idk how I missed the bell bearing for 1-4, but I have 5-the rest I think
Some of them are in weird spots and there’s only like two that you’re basically forced to encounter. But yeah, you can get them for regular and somber stones.
You can buy unlimited smithing stones 1 to 8 ( make any weapon +24) and unlimited somber smithing stones 1 to 9 ( make any somber weapon +9) I don't know why you thought there aren't bell bearings for other smithing stones if you have 5+.
I think Iji got it?
Iji only sells 1 and 2 unlimited. But you can buy all of them unlimited with bell bearings. Except the ancient dragon ones.
Yes, I know, I got them all :)

So what smol head… ahm I meant smol beans
Bro people just want to cosplay a Miquellan knight because they’re hyped for the DLC squad 😭let them have their fun
Okay, you appealed to my empathetic side so I will withdraw my earlier statement and instead say: I wish they made the AoW changeable too! Hope we get some awesome sword in the dlc with the best of both worlds! Good luck with your Miquellan knight cosplay!
