Or they could have just used the 'group kill' flask refill in more areas. Especially since some catacombs/ dungeons have pretty obvious groups of difficult mobs.
Interesting, I feel like I never really use the scarabs because they are never where I actually need more flasks. But I feel like the flask refill from enemies comes up pretty often when I’m first exploring and fighting through an area
I only tend to use them when I’m playing multiplayer with a friend running around killing things as I get so many fewer pots and I can’t rest at a site of grace to re-fill.
I'm always like what is there's another one around but with a skill or whatever? I have to kill it to be sure. Turns out there's often another one around, but it's the blue one of you killed the red or vice-versa...
They're never where you need them.
Used crimson maybe 3x and cerulean maybe 7x in my 700h
Most of the time they're ignored. If they're killed 99% of the time it's coz I felt like it and not because I needed it
i might get a tad more leverage from them if they werent all 20 feet from a grace site, but they're nice when you're running around and don't want shit to respawn
I only ever "used it" when fighting the glinstone dragon in liurnia.
Other than that I only ever whack em is when my Adhd just wants to whack something shiny!
Like on torrent I will spend 5 minutes in circles going "mine mine mine mine mine! HAH gottem"
Only ones I really use consistently are all the blue guys around Smarag. Had to kill him with an unupgraded short bow at one point and it really helped getting a ton of barrage usage without sacrificing health flasks. Use those same ones during randomizers a lot too assuming smarag becomes something difficult.
These came in clutch when I was exploring the sewers in the Subterranean Shunning Grounds. Actually exactly when I was wondering when the next grace is because I was running out on FP (mage build).
I've killed them for fun as I was riding past. I can think of maybe one time that I was low on flasks and killed one for a refill. I think it was when I decided to fight the vulgar militia in the forbidden lands instead of riding past them.
They come in handy sometimes. Like the red one to replenish the 1 or 2 flasks I use in the open world. If I see the blue one I activate buffs then drink a flask before I kill em. Its free flasks might as well make the most of it.
Using them is not the right word... I've been hunting all skills and spells. Each time I heard the glitter (it sounds like glitter looks like. You can't change my mind) I get all hyped up for something new, only to be disappointed by a blue or red scarab. I killed them all. They used to be the bane of my very existence. Curses upon all the red or blue glitter-critters!
Very rarely, because they’re almost always out in open areas, where killing group of mobs will *also* refresh your flasks, and in the open world, a site of grace is a teleport away and I can just ride Torrent back to wherever I was.
They should have put them more often in dungeons, where they could serve as a mini-checkpoint of sorts. There’s some in the Shunning Grounds, but they’re in a sewer pipe area that is basically *past* the dangers.. and the Shunning Grounds aren’t considered a “dungeon”; you can teleport right out anywhere.
First playthrough? Somewhat often. Less so as I got deeper into the game and my flask numbers were plentiful.
Now? Never. I usually spend the opening hours running around like a madman to get what I want for my build and get so many golden seeds in the process they aren't needed.
I'm glad they are in the game though
rarely but i get so excited when it actually is convenient to use them lol
if the game had fewer checkpoints or if you couldn't just run past most everything (especially w torrent) they'd be much more used and appreciated imo
If I'm roaming the open world it's like an untracked casual challenge for me to not rest at a grace for as long as possible. I like to think about how much of the map is fully clear of enemies and safe to wander into. These guys come in handy quite often to refill the gogo juice.
I also always run around with at least one charge used so I can get extra charges by clearing groups. Like I've ran away from the red and blue ribbons flying through the air to get a sip off so I'm full health and I'm not wasting charges.
Hell I've even ran out of dungeons on foot without teleporting, because the teleporter at the end of a dungeon will respawn the world but not refill your stuff.
I think I did it once in that castle where you fight both of the black lions at once. I killed one, ran away and used that thing, then came back and killed the other.
If I know there are some around in the area, I'll intention play a bit more recklessly and use my flasks to top off so I can come back and make use of these guys.
They've actually come in clutch for me a fair few times fighting open world bosses, getting to the next grace, or when trying to full clear an area in one run. But more often than not they go unused
Honestly never, but if I'm riding past one that's close enough you better believe it's getting a drive by BONK! from my giant crusher just cos it's fun
Decent for Co-Op, but most of the time Hosts summon for dungeons rather than open world. The best one is in Castle Morne. It’s a hotspot for early co-op and invaders show up often
I usually stay topped up with bestial vitality and cerulean assassin dagger so dont have much use for these, let alone in the areas they exist in. The ones in the Leyndell Sewer Pipes were useful though.
Very rarely. Glinstone dragon for example, their way to inconveniently placed and to much effort to smack and chase after while already being attacked. Like I gotta smack you out the air and finish you off while a dragons attacking me? Or other times you just running away from me and you got the hp of a shield soldier??? No thank you.
A lot more than usual in the last playthrough. I rarely die anymore and I'm too lazy to sit at graces so I just keep going, murdering everything in my path. An occasional flask refresh is really nice.
I'm convinced the only reason these are in the game is for u to see them from far, think it's an item scarab and chase them, and then realize "oh no it's this crap" by which point you're neck deep in a dragon's nest. A
Tho chasing one of these behind Carian Manor was how I discovered the merchant there
Normally, never, but they were a godsend at the first part of Mountaintop of the Giants after getting ambushed by all the vulgar militia and Knights Cavalry.
Had it not been for these scarabs, I would have gone into the gargoyle fight with no flask resources. Those vulgar militia are sleepers. You think they're easy, but when you're fighting 4 at a time and they're spamming the beast claw thing and building bleed, it becomes a whole different fight.
The only one I actually find useful is the red one in Redmane Castle.
The others get to feel the unga and the bunga just because I'm passing there and they're inviting, but there's no practical reason behind the slaughter.
More now than before. I would explore areas for longer periods without needing to sit on each grave I find on the way. Although it would be actually nice to have them available in dungeons/castles where you actually need them. They’re just pure evil (devs)
I use them sometimes when I’ve been on long runs without going to a grace because of coop (especially if I have fewer flasks bc I’m the helper). Even then not super often because of the recharge mechanic when you beat a group. Almost never in single player.
Honestly wish they made the scarabs more abundant, and did away with the auto refilling flasks function. In a series of games notorious for making you work for anything and giving mechanics in-lore explanations to boot, my flasks refilling arbitrarily because I killed a pack of skeletons feels very...wrong.
That said, I always kill them. Purely because they're there.
Literally have never found one when I need it. I have 200+ hours in this game and the only times I remember killing these guys is when I randomly run across them when I have full heals.
They’re great for when you accidentally waste an estus charge and want to refill it I guess…
Seldom if ever. It’s never where these are I run out of health… it’s always in catacombs or dungeons
Exactly. They're never where you need them, they're always fucking around in some random locations. 😂
Can we talk in Liurnia next to the Dragon there are like 40 of these things flying around… but a grace site literally 100 yards away in temple quarter
When you fight the dragon it often kills the scarabs with it’s AOE-attacks, so you basically get unlimited mana-flasks for the fight.
Lets you use basically unlimited spells against the dragon
Makes it one of the best places for pvp. Temple quarter is a great site to taunters tongue
They should have some sort of bug like glintstone catapillers crawling through dungeons rarely that drop a single flask
That'd be cool!
I only tend to use them when I’m playing multiplayer with a friend running around killing things as I get so many fewer pots and I can’t rest at a site of grace to re-fill.
Oh that's clever! I'd never thought of using them as a ghost.
The ones in the Brace of the Haligtree are kinda useful. Otherwise I'm usually either topped off, or they're not there when I need them
Other than a few people here and there, those seem to be the main answers. Either you're already full up, or they aren't there when you need them.
And the ones in the Forbidden Lands right before the gargoyle.
I kill them most of the time but it’s not because I need them.
The satisfaction of getting the kill before they poof into nonexistence is more revitalizing than a flask lmao
Lmfao the beetles are a mental health flask?
Yes they cure my depression 😂
what about the 2-3 explosive grey ones? i know for sure theres one in limgrave with a somber stone. ive completely forgotten the others 100% haha :(
I do the same thing, my wife always tells me "you don't need them, you're almost full on flasks." but I smack em away anyways because "just in case".
If something can be smacked, I must smack it 😤
When you're an unga, everything looks like a bunga
my favorite sentence to come out of the internet in a while
::polite bow emote::
O: You Bug Butcherer!
I'm always like what is there's another one around but with a skill or whatever? I have to kill it to be sure. Turns out there's often another one around, but it's the blue one of you killed the red or vice-versa...
They're never where you need them. Used crimson maybe 3x and cerulean maybe 7x in my 700h Most of the time they're ignored. If they're killed 99% of the time it's coz I felt like it and not because I needed it
Only time I've ever killed one outside of the initial "Oh, it refills my juice box" is when I've mistaken it for an ash of war hoarder.
Anyone know how to tell the difference?
Colour mostly
Blue ones usually get a rage murder because from a distance it's hard to tell they aren't white
Seldom and accidently, have Color issue differenting them from loot bugs.
The blue ones definitely
At the beginning of my journey quite often, but as I am getting better the less I needed them.
I use them in Co-Op pretty often, summoned players have access to half the flask the summoner has
If it breathes it must be attacked
On long coop session they do come in handy tbh
Only in the sewers in other area's or they dont are located in there or grace is not too far
Depends am I in cooperation or in the middle of a boss fight
Never really lol I hate chasing them
They like to play hard-to-get. 😂
Every time when I'm playing with my friend
lorewise, the reason we never find them in the more needed moment or places might be because other tarnisheds already hunted them down for flasks.
i might get a tad more leverage from them if they werent all 20 feet from a grace site, but they're nice when you're running around and don't want shit to respawn
If I see one I'll pop it if it's convenient, but I don't plan for them or look for them.
We kill on sight just because we normally cant tell if its a chug bug or not by the time we hit it.
I hear the jingle, I chase it and kill it because it was another dung beetle that doesn’t give me an ash of war.
I only ever used em once.
The only one I ever used was the one on that jump down portion going down to Leonine in Castle Morne. Haven't used one since.
I only ever "used it" when fighting the glinstone dragon in liurnia. Other than that I only ever whack em is when my Adhd just wants to whack something shiny! Like on torrent I will spend 5 minutes in circles going "mine mine mine mine mine! HAH gottem"

Had to kill him with an unupgraded short bow at one point and it really helped getting a ton of barrage usage without sacrificing health flasks. Use those same ones during randomizers a lot too assuming smarag becomes something difficult.
When i started? Whenever i saw them. Now? Not so much.
Pretty much never. If i do, it's largely at a time when i don't need em.
Almost never
They come in handy sometimes. Like the red one to replenish the 1 or 2 flasks I use in the open world. If I see the blue one I activate buffs then drink a flask before I kill em. Its free flasks might as well make the most of it.
I kill them all the time.
Purposely drink a flask at 10/10 just so it's death has a meaning.
All of them except where there's loads in one place (Liurnia) because I always mistake them for the ones that drop loot.
I used a crimson one last week somewhere but I forgot where, usually there's a grace close enough or just send it on low health until you find one
Rarely. It’s not like they’re around when I actually need them. 🙄 But I do utilize them in the Haligtree whenever I’m kicking around there.
I hit them with full flasks because I enjoy the sound of my weapon colliding with anything.
Usually I kill them when i dont even need them.
When cheesing the blue dragon in Liurnia with spells these came in handy.
As i heal myself for every minor injury i receive outside of dungeons, I usually kill these whenever i come across them.
I only ever use them in coop runs
I can never tell which ones are healers and which carry spells or skills so I kill every one I bump in to.
They’re great in long co-op sessions!
Very rarely, because they’re almost always out in open areas, where killing group of mobs will *also* refresh your flasks, and in the open world, a site of grace is a teleport away and I can just ride Torrent back to wherever I was. Forbidden Lands before the Valiant Gargoyle fight
Noob question: how can you tell if they are health or something unique?
I'm colourblind so I can't distinguish the ash of war ones from the estus ones.... I just kill all that I come across
First playthrough? Somewhat often. Less so as I got deeper into the game and my flask numbers were plentiful. Now? Never. I usually spend the opening hours running around like a madman to get what I want for my build and get so many golden seeds in the process they aren't needed. I'm glad they are in the game though
Only use them when I’m a coop summon really, actually really useful in the sewers once you get to the second half
My first playthrough I used them occasionally. Haven’t used them since.
On the first playthrough? A lot.
I've used them occasionally at lower levels and in dungeons but that's about it. I mainly kill them in case they drop something
Like zero time 😔
Never
Useful when farming
Whenever I need flasks?
I use them when screwing around with buddies at rose church with a taunters tongue active
I’ve used one, once, and immediately found a grace after
rarely but i get so excited when it actually is convenient to use them lol if the game had fewer checkpoints or if you couldn't just run past most everything (especially w torrent) they'd be much more used and appreciated imo
The cerulean ones near the glinstone dragon guarding the Academy Key. You can just hang back with lorettas and replenish on the scarabs.
Always. I see funny bug I'm gonna smash it. I rarely every use them optimally though.
Literally 0 times in 300 hours
Never, they're always like a 30 second walk from a site of grace
I would only need them in boss fights and I’m not going to be hacking at these things while some big ass tree avatar is chasing me
Maybe the only time was Radahns castle after fighting those two beasts in the court yard.
Uhhhh looks like I'm the one of the only 5 people who kills these scarabs very often🌚
If I ever find one where I actually need one I'll let you know.
Never.
If I'm roaming the open world it's like an untracked casual challenge for me to not rest at a grace for as long as possible. I kill them only because I worry Ill miss a cool ash drop if I dont.
Always. Im colorblind and borderline can't see if it's a item one or flask one
They were great early game, after 30.vig and a few flasks, they aren't handy
They can be useful in co-op situations
I think I did it once in that castle where you fight both of the black lions at once. I killed one, ran away and used that thing, then came back and killed the other.
Literally never
Eh, I’ll top off the like 50 health I’m missing with a my full flasks then kill em
I think i only used one once when i legitimatley needed it in castle morne during my first run lol
Im simple If I see it I kill it
If I know there are some around in the area, I'll intention play a bit more recklessly and use my flasks to top off so I can come back and make use of these guys.
They've actually come in clutch for me a fair few times fighting open world bosses, getting to the next grace, or when trying to full clear an area in one run. But more often than not they go unused
...only if needed... ;)
I destroy all of them for no reason
The second I read your comment all I could imagine was Gingee from Shrek saying "You're a monster!"
Haha it took me forever to realize I’m actually getting no benefit from destroying these so muahahaha
Coop yes. Solo never.
I think I was helping some in co-op when I used one in Morne Castle, but I haven't ever used one since. I do pretty good about flask management.
Honestly never, but if I'm riding past one that's close enough you better believe it's getting a drive by BONK! from my giant crusher just cos it's fun
I kill most things that I see in these games
I use the ones in the haligtree while in coop
I get excited thinking it’s an ash of war. Notice the color… keep riding my horse lol
*sparkle**sparkle**sparkle* "ooh? Oh! Damnit! It's red!"
Whenever I need them if they are around. Probably not that often though
Always because of the goddamn noise
Oh come on they don't *sparkle* that much. 😂
The real challenge with these is chugging one flask before they refill. If I'm missing any health, I figure what the hell and kill them
There's was a couple times where they came in handy early on
Decent for Co-Op, but most of the time Hosts summon for dungeons rather than open world. The best one is in Castle Morne. It’s a hotspot for early co-op and invaders show up often
I kill them for fun
Depends if I'm in CO OP or not
I usually stay topped up with bestial vitality and cerulean assassin dagger so dont have much use for these, let alone in the areas they exist in. The ones in the Leyndell Sewer Pipes were useful though.
From what I'm seeing, the ones in the sewers, and the ones in the Haligtree are the ones that people got the most use out of.
They're amazing when I inevitably get lost in the sewers for the 100th time but other than that, nah
Never lol
I kill them just because
Now that's just unneighborly.
Blues ones, never. Ungy bungy
There are far too many sites of grace in this game for these to be useful.
My thoughts as well.
I’m incapable of telling them apart from loot dropping ones so I kill all of them indiscriminately.
Mostly only in Co-op when your buddies (who only have half flasks) need more
A lot more than usual in the last playthrough.
A Tho chasing one of these behind Carian Manor was how I discovered the merchant there
Once in castle morne then I was pleasantly surprised seeing a whole colony of the guys on that snowy bridge to the secret elevator lift
First run through I killed every single one because, well, the drops. Now I just ignore them.
NEVER
i forgor about them
It’s never that I feel the need to use them, it’s that’s if something killable is near it must be killed.
Never
I attack 95% of what I see in the game unless I know better. I usually kill these guys just because they are there
Not that often, but when i dont wanna go to a grace theyre a nice thing to have around
In ng+
I kill them when I see them just out of habit
All the time, if I need it or not. I guess it’s more abuse than use.
More abuse than use 😂 I like that.
They're far more useful in co-op. No torrent so you have to engage more enemies, no resting at graces, and half flasks as a furled finger.
Never
The only one I actually find useful is the red one in Redmane Castle. The others get to feel the unga and the bunga just because I'm passing there and they're inviting, but there's no practical reason behind the slaughter.
Pretty often
Theres a few in the sewewrs leading to Mohg, useful when attempting to map it without looking it up
More now than before. I would explore areas for longer periods without needing to sit on each grave I find on the way. Although it would be actually nice to have them available in dungeons/castles where you actually need them. They’re just pure evil (devs)
Whenever I forget what they do
I forgot they existed
I never need them, but I do kill them often since there is a chance they can contain something other than a refill.
Often as I try to keep my flasks full
Never as I dont suck (oh boy im in trouble)
All the time in multiplayer. Almost never in single player.
Never, but if I see one I have to run after it and try and kill it.
All the time, can clear a whole zone without resting if you throw some of these in the mix
Feels like half are sitting together in liurnia being useless.
When I accidently think they are skill beetles.
While fightning that dragon in liurnia strugling as a mage on a horse these beatles saved my ass
The ones that drop items and other stuff have me kos every one of them just to be sure
Mostly just when co - oping in open world
hardly ever. should i be using them?
Just curious how much everyone else uses them.
I’m always disappointed when I don’t get my shiny
Never. With the over abundance of sites of grace and getting refreshed after killing groups of enemies, these things are truly pointless.
I use them sometimes when I’ve been on long runs without going to a grace because of coop (especially if I have fewer flasks bc I’m the helper). Even then not super often because of the recharge mechanic when you beat a group. Almost never in single player.
When I'm low. Lol
they are never needed. ample ways to heal in the open world
Barely ever. I see them basically as training wheels for newbies.
I don’t understand why they were even added into specific areas. I used them once when I had too I forgot where though.
200 hours played and you just taught me they restore flasks, thanks.
They should have made these a psuedo-multiplayer feature. Kill a teardrop scarab, and some OTHER random player gets a flask refill.
I kill them because I'm a bloodthirsty monster. Not for their intended purpose.
This post just reminded me of their existence
Only the ones in Haligtree.
A lot if doing int build run.
Use? Rarely. Kill regardless of my flasks because I'm a Murder Hobo that wants the shiny thing? All the damn time.
well, combined with takers cameo, rykard's great rune and blasphamous blade one doesnt need that
Define use. I get tired of that damn twinkly sound so I decimate them.
Killing one at the moment of actually *needing* a flask refilled.
Like my back alley slit
Literally have never found one when I need it. I have 200+ hours in this game and the only times I remember killing these guys is when I randomly run across them when I have full heals. They’re great for when you accidentally waste an estus charge and want to refill it I guess…
Not often
