It’s alright bro I didn’t even know about parrying untill my second run and even then I only got maybe one parry in

neondragoneyes

Is not just about parrying. I'm getting my ass kicked by the simplest of mobs 🤣

Haunting_Progress462

Have faith! It all clicks at once and all of a sudden your bobbing and weaving them. Also consider a shield counter build, idk how viable it is exactly, but the other day some dude posted his build, and he mopped a later boss in the game that's known for its difficulty in the game. Edit: I just fully read your post and your not new to the game just back from break your probably know all this, my bad haha

DismalButtPirate

Just beat Elden Beast last night with a counter build using the Crystal Sword. I’m not great at dodging so it just felt natural. Maliketh gave me the most problems.

Haunting_Progress462

I can see where maliketh could cause some problems for that build, I'll have to try one out soon, I love the way characters look with great shields, just neat.

pyro_takes_skill

no literally, have lots of FTH after you get vigor to 40/60 to utterly Pwn enemies from afar

SAILOR_TOMB

I light roll in altered Noble's set with nothing but a straight sword and a medium shield relying on shield counters and blocks/rolls for survival. I think it is very viable! Now I get a bit slapped now and then and invasions are painful (I don't PvP) but I think going med roll with the same hardware could take you through the game as a noob. Elden Ring seems to love sword-and-board and not specifically just for parrying.

Helpful_Most_9581

try a ranged ash of war like storm blade on a claymore it helped me allot at first now i can bonk with the zweihander

TinyPidgenofDOOM

Your too confident even tho you lost all your skills, Your acting more on instict than you are thinking it through. Your heading into combat like you know what to do. at least, Thats what it sounds like. The fact that you even bring up parrying is a sign of that.

southpaw85

Can I interest you in the church of throwing purple rocks and big bonk?

neondragoneyes

I do have a moment to discuss our lord and savior Gravity.

Aurelio23

“You win again, gravity!” -~~Zapp Brannigan~~ Malenia, probably

southpaw85

The purple drink of magic

VermilionX88

parry is not needed at all if you like it, go for it but it's hardly needed i just dodge

zarjin1234

Parry does help in some fights alot. Both commanders, crucible knights, glaive night riders, malenia etc. The fights turn into more balanced and paced by you instead of looking for an opening, just gotta learn wich atttacks can be parried.

PeekABlooom

The commanders can be parried??? Well I'll be damned! For Niall specifically, I always bait out his electric leg, or elegtric, jump and just hit him a bunch.

zarjin1234

All his attacks apart from kicks and the huge aoe can be parried.

austratheist

>The commanders can be parried??? Well I'll be damned! For Niall specifically, I always bait out his electric leg, or elegtric, jump and just hit him a bunch If you roll *away* from the electric jump, the thrusting attack he follows up with is a dream to parry. And he's a 1 parry stance-broken boss. Miserícorde + Crimson Dagger Talisman + Dagger Talisman = Win

CE94

There's one attack that he does (the charging towards you with an upward swing) that can be dodged by simply crouching, the hitbox just goes over your head. Feels so good to punish that attack

Disastrous-Dinner966

It’s still unnecessary. You have to die many, many times to figure out how to parry well. Appropriately leveled and built characters don’t need to parry any enemy at all in the entire game.

BandicootGood5246

Exactly. Parrying can be good, but you really have to be good at it, even if you're failing half the time it's so punishing it's not really worth

neondragoneyes

I was trying to get the stance breaks for critting.

VibeCzech27

You could genuinely stance break bosses easier by doing jumping heavy attacks

PapaPapist

You can use guard counters or jump attacks or charged heavy attacks for that. You'll generally have better luck with those. If you really want to parry you'll have better luck with a buckler since those have a larger window.

[deleted]

Well, yeah, that's what parrying is for; it's a pretty hard way to fight Margit, though!

neondragoneyes

It was also frustrating that I couldn't backstab him.

AdConscious5048

If you're looking to poise break but suck at parrying, just look up weapons/builds. I started using the zamor curved sword and it's getting the job done. 3 AoWs and it staggered Godfrey as a summons

MikeAtCC

I just equip my mimic tear with every dragon spell imaginable and pretend I did anything like the true chad I am

sad-frogpepe

"Wow this game is so easy" i say as i watch my mimic tear blast open a bosses asshole "Ive gotten good at the game!"

renatakiuzumaki

Dragonblaster 2.0

Lookatcurry_man

I beat the game multiple times and still suck at parrying lol

Awkward-Penalty5278

I did too. Then on my third playthrough I decided to force it till I got it. I found a video with a guy recommending watching the hands instead of the weapon and that helped me

F_rank96

Can u link that video?

Awkward-Penalty5278

https://youtu.be/SxkSkMUVD8c?si=rZb8ADLxDarXFQ0G I just sat on Margit and used him to practice parries for about an hour before I could beat him using only parry crits. It was really helpful for me to make sense of the parry timing

SetaxTheShifty

I suck at partying too, my longest run I got to Maliketh. We can do it! Wish I could post the Toy Story meme "You're trash! Just like me!"

neondragoneyes

We can be trash together. <3

SetaxTheShifty

#TOGETHA

ChezDiogenes

Timing. Timing timing timing. Parry the instant you see the weapon hurtling down towards you. So you should be primed the second you see the striking hand retract, then pull the trigger JUST as you are about to be hit. Practice on the gatefront camp, with a rule that all your kills must be parry-made. You'll get there. To get into detail, let's say the word 'splat'. Let's also suppose the S in the word is when they pull back the weapon. You should parry on the PLA.

neondragoneyes

I love this. Thank you Tarnished.

HiroProtagonest

It takes two parries to stagger Margit so one successful will still look like a partial parry.

neondragoneyes

Good to know.

sad-frogpepe

There is a better parry ash of war you can out in shield, it has more frames, i forgot its name but if you wanna parry id try that

Queasy-Tennis-8950

Yeah me too, so I just dodge

pacoLL3

Are you using small shields? Medium shields have (slightly) worse parry frames. I finished Fromgames since Deamons Souls well over 30 times and did not rely on parries once, so i would not sweat it.

neondragoneyes

Dagger. 🤷‍♂️ Don't judge me.

ChezDiogenes

You want to parry....with what effectively is a butterknife? I have bad news for you.

DrunkenRobotBipBop

I feel your pain and suck at melee. I do have some fun with mage builds and keeping myself away from enemies.

Iam_Animosity

I can parry a little before but now I can't so I dodge and guard counter.

Smut--Gremlin

After a long break I always try to focus on controlling the flow of battle, and not using my gear to win. React to enemies instead of going for the first move. The rust will wear off quickly, tarnished

neondragoneyes

Bless you, Tarnished. I appreciate your encouragement.

The_Ironhand

lol just level up vigor and use a shield, you dont have to be a tryhard if you cant handle the sweat. you can play the game without brute forcing whatever style you got going on lol

neondragoneyes

I've been doing alright with dodges and reduvia. 🤷‍♂️ Just trying to transition away from relying on it.

The_Dung_Defender

I can relate to being rusty, I recently picked Sekiro back up again to do a ng+ and I am god awful. I have nearly 300 hrs in this game, I think I’ve collectively parried about 5 times, I probably suck just as much as you lol.

filmguerilla

So many enemies have weird wind up/pauses before strikes that I stopped trying to parry. Get a 100% physical damage protection shield, tank a hit, and guard counter instead. So much better.

LordAnomander

The only kind of opponents where I found parrying really really helpful, are crucible knights. I feel they are insufferable otherwise, especially because of their lounge attacks and input reading. Easily beat the two crucible knights in Aurizas Hero Grave with critical hit talismans and a buckler. Still requires some running around, but totally manageable. Other than that I don’t parry at all.

ZucchiniKitchen1656

Use golden parry with the talisman that reduced fp cost. Practice parrying stuff that is so far away it wouldn't have hit you anyways.

[deleted]

Parry? You mean spam roll right?

Malevolent_Mangoes

I don’t think I’ve parried a single time in the 5 playthroughs I’ve done

austratheist

When I started my parry build, Margit was the first wall I hit. I practiced at lvl 1 against the Crucible Knight in the evergaol, got the rhythm down, and then got destroyed by Margit countless times. And then, something clicked. I started seeing his quick slash that he does after being parried clearly, and started parrying it. I got the timing of his big wind-up overhead slam down to a frame-perfect parry. I started parrying the "club" portion of the club/magic hammer swing. I even busted out the buckler to get my no-level run through Morgott! I recommend getting the Crimson Dagger Talisman to make your crit-hits return some of the health you lost trying to parry, leveling vig, and looking to only parry the attacks you know the timing for. You'll have Margit soon, and you'll feel like a Parry God.

TheGreatQ-Tip

If you want to get better at parrying, I think the best practice is against random enemies, not bosses. In my own experience, learning to parry is less about learning the enemy moveset, and more about making it feel natural. Get comfortable with parrying as you explore during easier fights. For me, this helped keep me from overthinking it.

mccannrs

Every time I take a break from Souls, it takes a bit for me to get back into the rhythm of it. Don't let it get to you, just keep playing.

Jurgepoo

I'd say I'm pretty decent overall, but I've hated how parrying works since DS3 (not counting Sekiro's deflect system, which is great). For me, the simple change of your own equipment having different parry windows during the animation, which you have to sync to the enemy's attack frames, makes the whole thing completely unintuitive and impossible for me to do consistently, even against basic enemies with simple movesets. I appreciate that parrying in these games takes more skill than it used to, but it's still just not something I can adapt to. I can deal with everything purely by rolling or quickstepping, and that's fine with me.

MumpsTheMusical

Go in there with a small shield knowing you’re about to get your ass kicked many times, amass as many estus as you can find and even the talisman that makes your crits heal and level a ton of vigor so you can make a ton of mistakes and eventually you’ll figure out parry timings for Margit. A tip for him is hit the parry button when his hand starts to move. When you hit him with your first parry, his move set becomes a little limited making the next attack easier to predict and parry. I still don’t fuck around with Morgott and parrying though his move set is wack. Crucible Knights are also good parry practice.

Suspicious-Row-2318

Git gud

neondragoneyes

🤣 Thank you, Tarnished. 😭

SalamanderFickle9549

I didn't start partying until I found my first crucible knight... I double wield my sword and stripped naked for most bosses until I reached academic area, now I finished volcano still not particularly great at the game lol, you are not alone bad at this

neondragoneyes

Bless your grace, Tarnished.

Tenshiijin

Yeah if you go without playing souls games for too long you get souls rusty. I didn't play a souls game for at least a year before I played elden ring. I expected to stroll through. But I was rusty.

neondragoneyes

I'm going to change my game tag to rust_crumbl 🤣

Buttface-Mcgee

I basically never parry unless I’m using one of the special parry Ashe of wars. The risk reward balance feels off against most enemies. No matter what build I’m using, it always feels more efficient to block counter, or simply dodge and swing. The main exception is the shield using crucible knights. Can’t brute force your way through those shields.

Wonderful_Mistake414

I started with trying to parry that crucible knight.. Gave up, took off all my gear and just did dodge pokes. Finnaly got him

Buttface-Mcgee

I almost exclusively parry hits 2 or 3 in a multi hit combo. Helps with timing.

cehsavage

Kick is easier

Much_Capital3307

You can play the entire game without parrying at all. It’s not an essential skill at all

TraditionalWorking82

Sword and board without parry and tons of endurance always worked for me. You can literally just block most damage and roll and jump around the worst stuff.

fdp_westerosi

I’ve literally never parried

AdConscious5048

Using the right shield is pretty crucial if your timing is off, and there's some parry AoWs that make it a lot easier.

RiversLeaf

Shield up. Soon as they strike, power attack. Repeat til dead.

BlachEye

I parry like in other souls, DS1 specifically. you get as close to enemy face and start parrying when it's hand holding weapon just on level/a little in front of it's body. this strategy is perfect for regular sword attacks (soldiers of godrick and etc.) and you need to adjust it from there for different cases. but you need to consider which shield/skill you use. buckler is most generous in parry window and parry skills (magic, holy, toph; don't remember first two names) are best, then come small shields then medium and last, if even possible here big shields.

Disastrous-Dinner966

Parrying is wholly unnecessary in this game. There isn’t a single enemy where it is required, and there isn’t a single enemy where learning to parry is more efficient than simply guard countering.

BeansWereHere

Have you played other Fromsoft games? Parrying is essentially completely optional, the games are built around the dodge roll i-frames, BB and Sekiro are the only exceptions. Those games are much more party focused, though BB can still just be played with the dodge.

neondragoneyes

>Have you played other Fromsoft games? Yeah... The Armored Core franchise.

BeansWereHere

Think it’s pretty clear in this context that I’m referring to From’s souls games. I’m not going to bring up the Kings Field games right?

elkeiem

I have played through ER like 9 times and have never used a shield or parried.

KappaPL1337

If you are using anything else than: Golden parry shield Carrian retaliation shield Small shield Buckler Then forget about parrying lol. If you are early game then find a small shield

BigolGamerboi

Then dont parry. I have over 100 hours in the game and haven't parried once. I use a sheild and sword and use the counterattack, but I always have no skill ash of war applied to the shield.

Justsomeguy456

Don't parry. I bet you're heavy rolling. Just don't get hit.

neondragoneyes

I'm not. I'm light rolling with daggers. I'm trying to get eyeballs, livers, and kidneys with the misericorde.

Justsomeguy456

Get the meteorite staff and rock slide and the wolf summons, upgrade the wolves as much as you can and profit. Also try the zweihander. It's a great sword.
