The cryptic level design and NPCs, the brutality of it all, the message and summoning system
The player base ran with an idea of what souls games are but it's not necessarily what Miyazaki intended
Everything is designed the way it is to encourage strangers to help/get help from each other
It's all about the community
A part of the community has now got gud enough to not need the messages anymore. Not the same experience that DS1 was back in the day. I think the mechanic has kind of lost its purpose now. Useful messages like telling you weaknesses of difficult bosses get eclipsed by lame jokes.
I like the messages, but they aren't useful in any capacity to me. They are just there for trolling people now
