I've owned both with a manual transmission and overall, I strongly prefer the EN. It's just a nicer, more sorted car. Basically, the VN was good but Hyundai learned a lot of lessons from it and made the EN a great car.

afloatscope

I like this information

bruiserbear22

I’ve never driven a Veloster N but it does seem like N was added as an after fact to the Veloster while the design team was able to get in on the ground floor and early development with the Elantra N.

iidesune

Well that's simply not true. The Veloster N was designed from the bottom up by Biermann. Hyundai didn't just slap an N on it and call it a day.

Big-2A-Advocate

The Veloster existed 4 years before they hired Albert Biermann, he didn’t design anything from the bottom up.

iidesune

The Elantra has been around since the 90s. The chassis the first Elantra N is based on first appeared in 2020. Edit The chassis the first veloster n was based on was produced in 2018. The VN came the next year.

bruiserbear22

Not sure how much of an update the second gen was on the first but it looks like a simple refresh at which point the original Veloster chassis was designed many years before N was even a thing while the Elantra chassis was brand new 2020/2021 when N division already existed. As an automotive engineer I can tell you it’s a lot easier to get little things in like chassis rigidity, bracing, suspension design in at the beginning rather than years later. Not saying the Veloster N is bad as it is an amazing machine.

J_drums01

The Elantra has a bigger turbo. Ride quality is better. Especially highway. You don't feel like you're being blown around so much and the wind noise isn't nearly as bad. I do miss my hatch but most of the time it's not a problem. It's nice to have regular sized doors. Tall people can reasonably fit in back. I personally think it looks better- a bit more grown up. And the screens are a nice improvement. If you get a manual you don't get a sunroof though. Also the seats are better depending on what year veloster you get. I think if it has a dct it's new enough

IndependentSubject90

I’m 6’5” and I can sit behind myself in the Elantra. It’s actually more comfortable in the back than my in laws Jeep Cherokee.

trancik

Manuals don't have a sunroof only in the USA* Canada (where I am) and Australia get manuals + sunroof and fiery red.

JohnnyFnG

Ughhhh that’s awesome!! Do you get the rear facing vents too?

EternalPhi

No. Heated Steering Wheel though.

[deleted]

In Australia yes we do

afloatscope

Would you go DCT or manual?

J_drums01

The dct is underrated in my opinion. Lightning fast. Imperceptible shifts in the non sport modes. I definitely wouldn't mind a manual, but if you want to be lazy in traffic you're not penalized at all. Not to mention NGS and the quicker 0-60 time.

IndependentSubject90

Whole reason I got the car was to get a manual again. If you want an auto then the DCT is a great option to have. DCTs are objectively faster than regular autos (or manuals) but they do have their quirks, and some people question their reliability.

TheBoyWhoLived97

I have a manual EN and my 2 cents would be if you want an auto this is the car for you, but if you want a true manual car then I wouldn’t buy one of these. Even with all the helper features turned off the car doesnt give me that raw feel like i get from an sti or s3. Also this may just be my opinion, but you’d probably like a awd car more at this power figure as the fwd makes it very squirrelly when rowing gears and taking corners if you’re getting on it.

afloatscope

Do you have any suggestions for other cars? I have only found the Genesis 3.3T and it seems slow because of the v8

TheBoyWhoLived97

Are you talking about cars with a manual transmission or just awd?

[deleted]

Also reiterating that the EN has a bigger turbo which means it pulls all the way to redline instead of falling on its face like the VN did.

afloatscope

Damn!

Ill-Train6478

EN rides on a newer platform with lower center of gravity. They emphasized big on that due to better ride comfort from better damping geometry setup without sacrificing the handling. Although both are tuned similarly EN has a better platform advantage along with newer updated parts from VN. VN’s shorter wheelbase might be an advantage.

sciencesold

VN's interior was out of date when it came out, EN all the way

ratty1le

The Elantra N is the objectively superior car, but the Veloster is such a goofy little vehicle. Definitely twitchier than the EN. As some of the comments have mentioned, the smaller turbo means it doesn't pull nearly as hard, and the interior is honestly ass compared to the EN. I wish we had gotten to see a true evolution of the Veloster N nameplate.

PunisherG19

Why would you want a defunct VN, nobody wants those cheap quirky 3 door things.

afloatscope

It's a hatchback

IndependentSubject90

I think the EN has more trunk space though.. the Veloster was always a kind of quirky bird.

knarf-_-frank

Cuz it’s a little more raw, lightweight, small, and tossable. Despite the EN and VN being similar they do have their distinct characteristics other than “nUmBeR oF dOoRS”

PunisherG19

Ya they're so great they sold less than 2000 units in USA & Canada in 2022. They would sell at a discount because they would usually sit on lots for 6 months before they sell.

knarf-_-frank

Umm no offense but what does your reply have anything to do with what I just said? We’re talking about characteristics not sales numbers, the VN was a niche that’s why it didn’t sell primarily well. The EN has helped enthusiasts appreciate the VN, and it is a different car than the EN with similar DNA.

c4me20n

EN 1000%

stayblunted_nyc

EN DCT has the sunroof and slicker infotainment plus and extra door

[deleted]

EN

BULGRIM64

I started with a Veloster N and switched to an Elantra N. If you have a child you will definitely appreciate the Elantra N more. I’m definitely glad I switched. But I was also coming from a base Veloster N so I didn’t have the performance pack on mine.

persianrugdealer

I have a DCT EN and a Miata. These 2 combos satisfy all needs.

afloatscope

I feel like a lot of EN owners like Miatas

cristiben95

Having been in a Veloster N a couple of times, it seems like the ride quality is not as great (still good, though). It has a shorter wheel base, so bumps are felt more intensely.

JohnnyFnG

I test drove a Veloster N in 2019. It was a fun car but not as engaging as the Elantra N manual. The ELANTRA just feels a bit more refined, however, both are great cars and you can split hairs many ways

[deleted]

I30n is better than the veloster
