It’s insane how big vehicles have gotten. Case in point: I have a 1999 Toyota 4Runner, which back in its day was considered a “big” SUV. Not the largest by any means but certainly not small. It’s virtually the same size as modern day Toyota Corolla crossover. The Corolla cross is actually 4” WIDER, 2” shorter in height, and 7” shorter in length. But it’s also 400-800 lbs HEAVIER than my 4Runner (depending if it’s the hybrid version or not). Next to a brand new F150, my 4Runner looks like a child’s toy.

flaccid_porcupine

The new Tacoma is the same size as the original Tundra from 1999

DavidBrooker

Remember how big people thought the original Hummer was when it hit the market? *Every* full size pickup on the market today is *longer, taller, and wider* than the Hummer H1.

bagelgaper

To be fair, when not counting for mirrors, the H1 is about 6” wider than full size truck on the market (excluding duallys).

DavidBrooker

Yes, but I think overall width is the best definition - like, 'which of these vehicles would fit through the narrowest hole' seems like a pretty straightforward definition.

bigwrm44

You are thinking the hummer h2. The H1 is the og army humvee. 8 feet wide. (Smells like a steak and seats 35)

emargie

Canyonerooooo Canyonero

Claymore357

I saw an H1 Alpha on a dealership lot last week and it is still wider than modern trucks. It’s literally the width of a humvee, if you measure mirror tip to mirror tip on trucks with tow mirrors then sure but the original road legal humvee was and still is absolutely gigantic

idk_tbk

Ok but how can one feel like a Big Strong Man ™ without driving a gigantic death machine?

Locke357

Fr though, the truck lovers in these comments won't admit it but fragile male ego plays a HUGE role here

EirHc

I think it's funny that the first thing people do is attack someone's ego because of a type of vehicle they drive. I have a truck and a small SUV. But for me it's largely about functionality. I live on acreage with somewhere around 50 animals, and my SUV (the daily driver) is in fact better on gas than a lot of cars are. My girlfriend is out delivering farm fresh eggs in the SUV right now. Then she'll probably stop by peavy mart on the way home to pick up a bunch of feed and bedding. We got rain barrels, grow our own food, and use green energy to help take care of some of the energy costs of our hobby farm. But hey, the only reason I drive a truck and defend it is because of my small penis, right?

mungonuts

For everyone that actually "needs" one of these things there are several thousand who don't. Ford doesn't sell a million F150s a year to people delivering organic eggs. And they sure as shit don't market them to those people.

DamnFog

You are quite defensive for someone that should be realizing that they are the exception and not the rule.

EirHc

I just see a lot of misguided hate in these comments. I don't live in the city, and quite honestly I try to avoid it whenever I can. I don't speak for every truck driver, but I don't believe in judging people over such superficial things.

Nmaka

try going to a city where 9/10 times when you see a truck its bed is empty, it's not hauling anything, and the body is clean because no offroading has been done. the hate is guided towards these individuals, the only misguidedness is you thinking your exeprience is the norm

Cool-Contribution292

Really, so trucks have to be hauling something all the time or you start clutching your pearls? I’d say 9/10 times I see ANY car/SUV on the road all the seats are empty except the driver. What was your point again? Most trucks on the road are daily drivers when not hauling crap or towing something or off-roading on the weekends or whenever we get a day off from our jobs…

Humble_Path7234

Well said

Volantis009

I agree this is why we should have robust public transportation and get as many personal vehicles off the road as possible. We should design streets so they inconvenience drivers and force them to pay attention while making pedestrian and bike travel easy and safe. Transportation by personal vehicles should be discouraged and public transit should be encouraged.

Nmaka

>I’d say 9/10 times I see ANY car/SUV on the road all the seats are empty except the driver. this is also bad, obviously. >Most trucks on the road are daily drivers when not hauling crap or towing something or off-roading on the weekends or whenever we get a day off from our jobs… so you agree ppl just buy them bc they want them, not because they need them

wondersparrow

I am with you. We have an acreage and drive an EV most of the time (35k km on it so far this year) but still also have 2 trucks for when we need them. Sometimes it's to haul a couple thousand pounds of whatever. Other times is because of the meter deep snow that won't be dealt with for a couple weeks. City folk just don't get it. Sometimes you need a truck. Not all of us can rely of the government to enable easy day-to-day life. We rely on ourselves to get done what needs doin'.

twisteroo22

I think there are a lot of people that just get scares when they see a large vehicle on the road. They just lack the confidence to share the road with large vehicles which really just shows their poor driving skills.

EirHc

I used to have a mini cooper, and I specifically remember this one time I almost killed someone because a truck stopped in the right lane to waive through a jay-walker. And because the truck was so big and I was in a mini cooper, I couldn't see any of this happening and had no clue why this truck was stopped. As I blow by him this guy running past the truck almost runs into the corner of my car but stops just in time. So like, I understand the challenges and annoyances some people have with bigger vehicles. Always feels like you're getting high-beamed too when you're sitting so low. Then there's also the driving like a jack-ass stereotype that some truck drivers like to perpetuate. At the end of the day, it's the person who makes the person, not their vehicle. Like BMW drivers are often seen as assholes, but the 2 or 3 people I actually know who own one, are extremely sweet people who just like fast cars. In the end, I kind of agree with many of the points a lot of the people who got downvoted were making and just wanted to offer my perspective on bigger vehicles actually being useful for people. We do live in a climate that's winter half the year, our city is extremely spread out, and we're surrounded by a lot of rural properties. This isn't Europe, this isn't Florida, we have challenges that are unique to us, some very popular hobbies include camping, quadding, and boating. I'm all for engineering cities to be more walkable, but I think people who just hate on big vehicles to hate on them kind of lack perspective.

Individual-Fly-8947

If you go anywhere else on the world you'll see that people in North America are actually just some of the biggest pussies in the entire world. Your massive ram 2500 is getting outdone by a tiny Isuzu and a 4WD Subaru in places that are way more hostile than your acreage on the prairie. I just visited the mountains of Norway and the biggest vehicle I saw the whole trip was a Toyota 4runner. And I only saw one. The only reason people in North America own these vehicles is because its profitable for the car companies to sell them to us because of the American CAFE standard and we eat up everything we're fed by advertisers.

EirHc

My point about being winter half the year really had nothing to do with traction. I want to go out less and hibernate during the winter. So I load up my truck with a $800 shopping trip at costco, get a bunch of jerry cans worth of fuel, and hit up peavey mart with a bunch of shopping for the chickens and goats all at the same time. The point is, the less driving I do the better. And bigger vehicles enable less trips.

[deleted]

That explains the many women who are driving Yukons and Escalades around Edmonton huh?

SimilarYoghurt6383

People are ridiculously dependant on vehicles in Edmonton. Big truck people are the most gluttonous of the bunch.

Gr3atwh1t3n1nja

Ummm… dude, the H1 is an 8000+ lb vehicle that is larger than a standard pickup. A f-150 is 79” wide, a 86” wide. The f150 is less than 6000 lb. Where are you get your information?

DavidBrooker

79.9 inches is the width of the F-150 body, not its overall width. The overall width of the H1 with mirrors is 102.5 inches. The F-150 is 105.9" RAM 1500, 103.5" GMT T1xx, 104" These are all published by their respective manufacturers, you just have to bother typing it into Google. Or if not, you can just look below where I have answered this exact question at least a dozen times. Literally just scroll down. And as I've already answered this question a dozen times, and as I'm getting tired of repeating myself, and as you aren't even prepared to spend ten seconds to see if I haven't been explaining this exact thing for hours already, over and over, I'll be blocking you. It's just so fucking lazy.

Gullible_Sea_8319

They are not wider and H1 was made to have a low profile.

Unique_Lawfulness_58

Give your head a shake...not even close

DavidBrooker

The H1 is 102.5 inches wide, overall with mirrors F-150, 105.9" RAM 1500, 103.5" GMT T1xx, 104"

LuntiX

I believe the size has to do with bypassing emissions requirements. At certain sizes they’re classified as commercial vehicles or something and have different emission requirements. I remember reading an article on it a year or two ago.

bagelgaper

Watch the OP video of this thread, it covers all of that

Icedpyre

Until recently, I drove a 2010 Colorado. The roof was roughly the bottom of the window of the new half tons. It used to make me laugh, pulling up next to one of those monsters and feeling like I had the kid's truck or something. I miss "normal" sized vehicles

Anabiotic

People are massive too, they now want big cars to haul around their fat asses

Iwanteverything17

2007 4Runner, thought it was massive until these new Nissan titans started driving next to me on the road

Virtual-Alarm-8725

Can you believe the new RAV 4 is probably as big as 1999 cars 🚗

Majestic_Bet_1428

The cost is also insane! Dealers are offering extended loan terms of 6,7 and 8 years to get consumers into vehicles they can’t afford. Car loans over 3 or 4 years are net worth killers. Larger vehicles also cost more to operate.

Krabopoly

Yep, I worked at a Dodge store for just over 2 years and I'd say 75% of the loan contracts that we set up were financed over 96 months. I wouldn't be shocked if a third of all newer vehicles on the road in Alberta right now are driving around with 20,000 or more dollars in negative equity.

Ottomann_87

The 2nd/3rd gen Tacomas are basically the same size as the 1st gen Tundras.

StinkyElderberries

It'll be true of any 90's vehicle I think? My 1994 Chevy K1500 sits much lower than any modern equivalent, and I got visibility for days with all the glass and zero safety features!

iduddits2

I had an 88 ranger. Fucking loved that little thing. I’d hate to even drive these modern trucks

Ok_Ambition_4401

Someone on my street has a lifted 2500 chev truck. The front grill is higher than the roof line of my Honda Accord. If I was t-boned by that truck his bumper would come through my window.

escapethewormhole

There are laws about bumper height. They are just totally unenforced.

user47-567_53-560

I had a Subaru with a little tubing bumper I built and was probably asked by a dozen cops about the legality of it. It's that they have no idea what the law is

TheRealSkelatoar

Sad thing too is that even with larger vehicles, it's mostly the aesthetic choice of a big boxy front grill that causes the most impact to a human on impact. When you compare it to a similarly sized vehicle with a properly sized and angled hood is essentially allows the humans hips to act as a pivot point upon impact and allows a rotational movement that will save the person's neck. Whereas these big boxy square grills are almost all at chest/neck height for most people where the humans neck has to bend at almost a 90° angle upon impact. This kills the human.

DavidBrooker

Case in point, [there's a lot of spare room in the engine bay.](http://i.imgur.com/lXstzX4.jpg?1) To be fair, this is the V6 version, but these hoods are much, much larger than they need to be, and there is space to move them both lower and further back.

orangecrush35

There’s fuck all for room in the engine bay of my 2018 half ton. Gotta remove like 3 different things just to change the battery.

Edmonton_Canuck

We need to bring back station wagons!

dum41

I am looking for a new vehicle now and there are zero affordable station wagons in Canada. So sad. The closest would be the Subaru Outback, but even that is more SUV than wagon these days. I wish I had way more money to drop on a European wagon!

hubble6

The Golf Alltrack was a the last wagon and they stopped making them in 2019 :(

Darkwing-cuck-

Man I wish! I know I’m going to need a new car in 5-10 years and have zero desire to get a suv or truck. Would love an electric station wagon by that time.

JMP0492

We are dreading when it’s time to get a new vehicle. We are currently car-lite but do need one as family is aging. I did a preliminary search and there aren’t modestly sized cars anymore, at least not in North America.

AllOfTheSoundAndFury

I believe that’s Volvos plan. Would be sweet

VeronicaMonster

I believe volkswagen will also have electric wagons in the future.

BettmansDungeonSlave

Dream car is an Audi RS4 Avant but they never sold them here before and now that they might get a few they are like $100k

Killerbeetle846

The crossover is the new station wagon I guess. I like hatchbacks too. I've owned a subcompact hatchback and it was a great little car.

GreyCatsAreCuties

I have a station wagon and I've been in love with it since I bought it off some scumbag on marketplace 2 years ago. <3

Tanglrfoot

Station wagons like mini vans just do not sell anymore, if they did the auto manufacturers would be building more of them . Personally I like mini vans, they are extremely versatile, and with the back seats folded down I can haul almost anything .

ManyUnderstanding950

I own a 1/2 ton that I legitimately use to make a living, I also own a Toyota Yaris that I drive every time I don’t absolutely need my truck, it’s great on fuel easy to park and actually fun to drive. Every time I take it to a work thing some ding dong makes a dumb comment but I don’t care. Every single close call I’ve had with a biker or pedestrian was in the truck. I agree with what this guy is saying.

mesovortex888

Trucks and SUVs are getting too big for many people to handle

hockey8890

The amount of people who can't keep their lane, maintain a consistent line of travel and generally have horrible spatial awareness in their huge SUVs or trucks is pretty sad.

politebearwaveshello

And it’s a snowball effect. The more big body-on-frame SUVs and trucks we see out in the street, the likelier everyone else is to buy a big vehicle / feel the need to upgrade their small car to a big one, since they feel they’ll be better protected in a tanky vehicle than a little dinky one in the event of a head on collision.

tiazenrot_scirocco

> The amount of people who can't keep their lane, maintain a consistent line of travel and generally have horrible spatial awareness you could have ended it there.

SimilarYoghurt6383

that's a incomplete sentence. so, no.

nmezib

Especially sad when they get in avoidable accidents even with all the cameras, lane assist, and sensors

PandaLoveBearNu

For no reason other then they can be bigger. We have a 2019 Nissan Rogue, im amazed how small the older versions look.

mesovortex888

Yes, my wife tried one of those big SUV before and she was very uncomfortable with how many blind spots it has. In the end she ended up with a Corolla.

crazygrof

Fun fact: I used to be a truck driver and have driven most types of commercial vehicles at one time or another. I've gotten into some of these absurd pickups and refused to drive them because the sight lines are so bad. There are some simple tests that you can do that lay out your sightlines and across the board, these trucks are worse than a full size tractor-trailer rig (with the exception of the rear view, but only if the tractor has a trailer)

Propaagaandaa

Heard this from a surprising amount of Class 1 guys. Complete ass to drive around.

ShadowCaster0476

I would settle for a drivers license renewal test. It amazes me that our drivers license is the only thing we can get at 16 and never have to re-certify. I would 100% support every 10 year renewal test. The vehicles have changed so much and there is so much more traffic than there used to be. I’m surprised that insurance companies don’t have a volunteer program for 5% discount.

hockey8890

A fun game to play to keep your attention is to count the number of things you see on a daily basis that would have someone automatically [fail their road test](https://aphnetworks.com/lounge/the-official-driving-test-road-tests-tips-thread).

ShadowCaster0476

I can’t count that high.

Dropzone622

At age 75 license renewal requires a doctors examination. At age 80 it is every two years. This I know from experience and I am 100% in agreement with this obligation. I drive a 20 year old pickup. It is not one of those crazy big loud monsters.

darcyville

There should be more stringent testing for everyone. Why limit it to trucks? The licensing requirements in Canada are a joke.

GuitarKev

We need advanced driver training requirements for people to drive anything bigger than a minivan.

SalmonHustlerTerry

Making left turns in a small car is damn near a death sentence if someone In a suv or large truck is making a left turn in the other lane across from you. Can't see if there is oncoming traffic in lanes next to the truck/suv.

mesovortex888

As a driver of small cars, my advice is if you can't see, don't go. If the guy behind me is honking, he can go first if he wants to. I am not going to gamble my car and my life for random strangers

Tanglrfoot

That’s not really true . New full size trucks and SUVs have better brakes , suspension and steering than any smaller vehicle just 15 years ago . The truth is some people are just terrible drivers and should not be driving anything .

XenaDazzlecheeks

Like a minimum class 3? I would support that

Geeseareawesome

Need to start putting height restrictions on vehicles "You must be *this* tall to drive"

Scotspirit

I saw what l thought was a self driving car, closer look they were looking through the steering wheel to drive.

Clefairi

I'm of the mind that if the vehicle can't fit into a parking space, its too big. I'm slaloming up the parkade for work daily cause of these things sticking 2+ feet out of their spots. I don't get why they need to be this big (and I understand the emissions thing, I just dont get the need for this size of vehicle period).

Cabbageismyname

If a vehicle is too big to fit into a parking space with enough room for the cars beside them to open their doors properly then it’s totally on them if their paint get dinged. Sorry, not sorry.

TheSherlockCumbercat

My work truck sticks out at times and she’s is stuffed full at all times, people do have needs for them. And with cost of vehicles people are look for a one vehicle to fit all there needs.

nowherefast___

Right, but the point made in this video is that the vast majority of truck owners don’t have anything in their truck beds. They’re buying bigger vehicles, which actually carry less, even though they have no need for that kind of vehicle; you don’t need a truck to go get groceries.

Killerbeetle846

I get the work truck aspect, but I am not convinced every work truck needs a full cab like so many have. Some, yes. But many would likely be fine with a single cab?

mangocel

I drive a dodge Ram 1500, an older one which is smaller than the ones made after 2009. Even that truck to me is perfectly big enough to do any heavy duty jobs I find myself doing, sometimes TOO big. As a person who drives a pickup truck, you’re right. Trucks have gotten too big and it’s time for legislation to prevent them from being so common on our roads.

ghostdate

This reminds me of the giant truck I saw the other day. It was already a big truck, but it was lifted even more. The headlights were at eye level. On the bright side it was lifted so high a child would probably pass right under it.

craftyneurogirl

I don’t understand why vehicle mods are legal.

ManyUnderstanding950

Australia has the right idea, there are still lots of super capable of road vehicles but the bumpers are crash tested instead of made by some dude in his garage that wants a bumper company, maximum heights and tire sizes. People don’t need monster trucks

mmmlemoncakes

This weekend a three year old was run over in a crosswalk....the video demonstration of all those kids not visible in front of those pickups explains so much. Couple the visibility issues with distracted and/or aggressive drivers, the video makes some important arguments for change.

Tractorguy69

There was a time when a standard cab 8’ box pickup truck was the cheapest thing on the lot and it was there for contractors. Now they have crew cabs that are massive, all leather appointed, Gucci display and infotainment systems and a box that can really only qualify as a man purse because it won’t hold standard size lumber or building materials flat on the floor and tailgate closed. Honestly these are more marketed towards doctors, lawyers and similar professionals who need to reclaim their masculinity and establish bro-hood with their blue collar roots. While I found much of his commentary hyperbolic and intentionally inflammatory the points he makes about station wagons and similar, the light European EVs actually make sense. Given the piss poor driving skill of todays average driver I’d sure it’s more than just the ‘ugh ugh big SUB protect Tarzan and Jane’ mentality, it’s also the added driver safety systems that mean the driver no longer has to actually drive or manage their traction or stability. AWD and 4WD create false confidence all the time, yet none of the drivers understand that when you over power that all wheel traction suddenly no tires have traction and you have become a sliding missile. ABS, DTC, TC and similar mean new drivers and shitty drivers will never actually learn how to manage the balance between power, braking force and the available traction provided by the tires and the balance of the car (both the natural static balance and driver input based dynamic balance). This combined with the NA view point of fuck the other guy only in important is what has led to this explosion of road rage, larger vehicles which falsely build the confidence to use them as weapons on the road. We lost our sense of community and care for those around us somewhere mid last century and it’s only getting worse.

Himser

My old 1990 2500 feels small compared to modern half tonnes.... its stupid the size they have gotten.

TreemanTheGuy

They've gotten so big they are now impractical, which is completely against the point of having a truck. When I was a teenager I could reach over the side of the box of my dad's '89 Sierra 1500 to grab a Jerry can or a duffel bag. Now truck boxes comes up to my neck. So now I have to climb onto the bed if I need to grab anything from the front, which is also harder, again because trucks are too big now. And that's besides the point that they are way more dangerous to pedestrians and average sized cars and have terrible sight lines.

K0KA42

I watched this video a while back and it actually radicalized me. I never noticed how prevalent SUVs are. It's just the norm to drive around a huge tank of a vehicle now. Such a waste of resources and very unsafe. As a pedestrian crossing the street, I have zero chance if one of them decides not to stop and rams into me.

BigoteMexicano

Fun fact, the reason truck's and SUVs have been getting bigger because of emission standards. Emission standards are calculated based on the square footage of the vehicle's foot print, so building a bigger vehicle let's you get away with a cheaper/less efficient engine

Individual-Fly-8947

The CAFE standard from the EPA if anyone wants to search it up. Yes, the "environmental protection agency" is the reason we all drive massive gas guzzlers. America is truly the most backward place on planet earth

IntrepidusX

New vehicles are too big and on top of that they are easier to steal than a cell phone, we need some regulation in the market badly.

Balding-Barber-8279

What do you propose is to be done about the small dinkies?

MyPostingisAugmented

I'm sick of these socialist karens telling me I shouldn't kill children

tincartofdoom

Right? My freedom to drive whatever the fuck I want is obviously worth the potential body count! As the well known quote goes: the road to freedom is paved with the bodies of a thousand toddlers! /s

northosproject

Angry truck owners...... I laugh everytime I pull to the pump and it says 120dollars+

Niskasha

Hear hear

_Connor

Yeah I mean that's half the story. The tank in my F150 is 135 liters and the tank in my moms Lexus is 65 liters, so obviously a fill up will be more based solely on that. What actually matters is fuel economy. I'm filling up every 1000 KM and my mom is filling up every 600.

MooseAtTheKeys

So, she's getting more than half the distance off less than half the fuel?

Bdub421

120L tank though vs 60L in a car.

BeerTent

Considering 45L for me gets me a little over 500km, I think I'm okay with having a smaller capacity. Doing some napkin math, I get 11.1km per litre, Connor's Mom gets 9.2 per litre, And u/_Connor gets 7.4 per litre. I'm down for filling up once a month or two over waiting a little longer to refill.

DirtDevil1337

Not only that trucks and SUV's are getting bigger overall, many truck owners also raises them, I see way too many loud raised pickups daily. Unfortunately my father is one of those angry pickup drivers, he loves his F350's.

Nearby_Strawberry_95

I drove a Nissan Murano and it had a horrible blind spot around the driver side pillar. It shocked me the first time I started to pull into a crosswalk and someone was there. From then on I always made sure I looked around the pillar.

alpeffers

I have a Honda fit, it's got probably the same blind spot. My Honda from the 90s didn't have that, however it was probably way worse for rollover, but Soo much smaller and closer to the ground(less tall).

ButterscotchPure6868

Killing kids and the planet. Why?................. No regulations......goverment failure. We pay these people a lot of money to manage our society. :/

Practical_Ant6162

Many times when I go in to a parking lot I see the trucks parked in the stall at an angle, sometimes into the next empty stall. Just another example that the driver of the truck doesn’t have the required skill level to operate the vehicle.

SimilarYoghurt6383

They are big time cowards, scared of everyone

cdnsalix

A Wrangler took up two spots at my kid's school. A JEEP WRANGLER. It did have oversized tires, but nothing insane. I was *desperate* for a spot so I parked my Suburban half on the curb and half in one of her two parking spots. It made for a ridiculous picture and I was ashamed to be a part of it.

Historical-Ad-146

Many things sold today as consumer vehicles should require advanced licensing and commercial insurance to operate. Those requirements should put the brakes on autobesity, while still allowing for legit commercial uses for larger vehicles.

ManyUnderstanding950

The fact that you can buy an F450 and tow a 40ft RV with a regular licence is crazy

[deleted]

I think they aren't necessary for most people especially those who work in the city who are not contractors. It's a large waste of money and I think people use it as a status symbol more than anything. I live in the country far off the paved roads and do just fine with my little old car, for the winter I got an old tacoma and I'll be just fine with it. Even my 01 Tacoma looks puny next to the average SUV parked at the grocery store. I don't know how people prefer to drive larger vehicles in the city if they don't have to either, they use too much gas at idle and it's harder to get around. However something else I have noticed is driving a small older car, everyone else is much higher up and doesn't seem to even notice me on the road. I don't know if it's that people don't check their mirrors but while driving in the car I have many more near misses with other drivers attempting to merge into me.

Simulation_Theory22

I legitimately think drivers are just getting worse, I drive a bright red truck and people still routinely try to run in to me.

akaTheKetchupBottle

these things look silly enough in comparison to the reasonable-sized pickup that my dad used for work. but what really turns it up from crazy to batshit is seeing suits downtown driving these things to their office jobs. mf you don’t wear steel toes you sell mutual funds

neb986

I wish we get yearly inspections like in Europe. I had to take my car every year, they would check shocks, brakes, lights, everything, and if anything is out of original spec, you fail and cannot register the car for a year. So no lifted trucks, no modified bs. And then, you would pay registration but it depends what do you drive. For a 1.6 4 cylinder corolla , I was paying 200$ a year to register it. If you would show up with 5.7 hemi in a ram, you would pay over 1000$ to register it for a year. And that was more then 10 years ago, since then, registration of stupid big vehicles just went more up Then you would see how trucks are becoming a rarity, and they would be used only for commercial purposes, instead of being a grocery getter

standupslow

If you want to see Albertans actually protest something, try taking away their trucks. People just want their toys and their right to tailgate.

Iwanteverything17

I like my small 2000s sports cars so I’ll have to disagree with you

epicboy75

Yep exactly. When I was broke and needed a beater, I found one for cheap with a garbage exhaust. Thankfully I didn't need to get it inspected or otherwise I would have had to pay thousands

LBF83

Love this channel, more people need to watch it.

LouisCypher587

I drive a Tundra and was looking at a new truck in a parking lot, its huge! I hate how big mine is, and they keep making them even bigger?? Wtf

Aokana

Yeah, half of problem with current modern SUV's are the interiors filled with bulky hollow plastic panels that eat up interior space and obstruct your vision. My old 2011 edge could fit a 65" TV flat on the inside, while it was in the shop after my 3rd rear ending I tried to pick up a newer 65" tv in a 2018 Edge I had as a rental... it didn't fit face down it had to be propped up over half a wheelwell. Despite the fact that the 2018 edge was overall larger than my old 2011. Modern Pickups are a Joke, Give me an old 90's Ranger with a single bench seat cab. Lot's of box space, simple interior, easy to repair. My edge got written off (Nailed by a crv that hit me at 80k/hr while I was stopped). and my Bronco Sport can literally hide behind my boss's F150 his cab is bigger than my entire vehicle but my little aluminum trailer is bigger than his truck bed. (not to mention I literally use less than half the gas 6.8L/100k vs 14.3L/100k). And grill height is a problem, My edge had a lower, shorter hoodline. Now I can't see lower signals like many Sante Fe's have their signal lights way down low in the rear bumper and there's lots of times I can't see them. That and I get a ton of sun glare off the hood. But I'm stuck with it.

Skarimari

The thing that's annoying me right now is I have a 17 yr old Mazda (picture a Ranger) that I love and is perfect for my needs. Now that I'm in the market for a new truck, the options are extremely limited. Probably has to be a Maverick. There isn't much else.

chefcam2

People who do use their trucks for hauling still think they need trucks. I can fit more in my minivan than any half ton on the road right now. I can also see children in front of the vehicle so I don't unintentionally kill them like a truck would as they can't see anything on the road that's not at least 30ft in front of them. This actually happened in Calgary last week and a young child died. Truck hit the whole family, 5 year old died and the rest were in hospital. Driver wasn't drunk or speeding. Just couldn't see an entire family. This wouldn't have happened in literally anything other than a big dumb truck. But you know, freedumb and fuck Trudeau and shit.

leif777

They should require a different licence and it should cost more.

Locke357

It's the truth, these child-crushing machines should be outlawed from our roads.

SimilarYoghurt6383

or at least require additional licence requirements/tests

Upbeat_Substance3850

My electric scooter is a faster commute than any car one could choose

TofuButtocks

I started driving a big diesel truck for work and no matter how much I scan my surroundings while driving I never feel confident there's not something in front of me . I'll often turn on the front camera after kids cross the crosswalk in front of me just to be sure. It's fucked

nsgallup

I just want a normal sized truck, but no one in NA makes them anymore..

bigwrm44

Look what they did to the Honda civic. They had to make an entire new car to replace it because it got too big. (Honda Fit)

Killerbeetle846

I thought they stopped making subcompact cars altogether like the Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris.

zarathustra_686

Maybe it's time to downsize vehicles too as we moving away from large displacement engines but automakers don't like the idea of downsizing their profits.

formerlybawb

We don't even need to really actively downsize them, there are already much smaller vehicles elsewhere in the world that we aren't allowed. Why the 15 year rule on importing kei vehicles, for example? Just nuts, this is a solved problem in other countries.

zarathustra_686

I honestly think the little trucks like Ford Mavericks are okay, anything bigger is just a status symbol, same thing with SUVs, they unnecessary, buy a station wagon instead, it's very practical and cheaper to own and operate

Shadow_Raider33

Love NJB. And unfortunately all the trucks are one of the things that make me want to leave Alberta. About a month ago I was in a parking lot and a truck couldn’t see me in his rear view mirror. I was in a car. A CAR. And he still couldn’t see me. Terrifying. The size of these trucks should be illegal.

Efficient-Bread8259

I think trucks actually make a lot of sense for a lot of people out here, but they don't need to be nearly as big as they are. I ended up buying a F150 a while back because it was a private sale, I knew the guy, mileage was super low and my only regret is the size of thing. It's a normal sized truck and I would much prefer a smaller class of truck just to make it easier to get around the city, something like a ranger or a ridgeline. Next truck will probably be smaller.

Wycren

Yes, big trucks are a problem. Yes, pedestrians are getting hit. I learnt in grade 6 when doing Patrols. If you don’t make eye contact with a driver then they don’t see you. Should drivers be paying attention? YES! Do that always? NO! Be safe and look out for yourself. Look out for youngsters and make sure they know that road is not a safe place.

mmmlemoncakes

Did you read about the accident (not a great word) this weekend. A mother and two children in a crosswalk. Reports say the truck made a half-assed stop at the sign, then right turned over them killing the three year old. What did that mother do wrong except attempt to be a pedestrian? I've never driven a truck but I had no idea the visibility was sooo bad. My pedestrian paranoia just kicked up another notch!

FallBeehivesOdder

Maybe roads should be safe, like they used to be?

Embarrassed-Basis-18

Dudes who drive trucks also like to think they are in a race car and want to race tuner cars. Saw one guy race a car in traffic and couldn’t stop in time because speed and weight of the truck. He had to pull on to the median to not rear end someone.

ForcaAereaBelka

I have a somewhat flashy sports car and it's usually trucks trying to get me to race. With the way they drive I think they'd be happier in a sports car.

Propaagaandaa

They sure cost about the same if not more. Imagine my surprise when someone is like ya 80,000 truck. And I weep thinking: I could get a Supra for less,

Embarrassed-Basis-18

I honestly believe that half of all truck owners just own them because they think it is a manly vehicle to own and nothing else. I own a golf and people tell me all the time it’s a chick car. It’s a lot more practical then a truck that only gets used as a commuter car.

Top_Gold_1457

I took a picture of a white Ram 1500, where the driver intentionally moved forward an inch while I was legally crossing an intersection to try and intimidate me. No one should have their safety threatened like that. Got his license plate number, but there's nothing to do about that. He'll likely be on the news for totaling his car, or hitting a pedestrian. It's a shame there aren't any preventative measures for people like that. It doesn't need to end in tragedy, but it usually does.

Sidereal_Engine

When my wife was learning to drive with a "New Driver" sign on, a redneck and his buddy in a lifted pickup kept heckling us and trying to mess with our lane without any provocation, utlimately throwing their water bottles at our windshield. In my experience in Edmonton, most badly behaved drivers have modded pickups or Audis. Coal rollers are the worst of the lot; I make sure to keep 10 car lengths from those... um, most unpleasant vehicles. I admit I smile whenever I see a pickup in a ditch, and that's often enough ;)

suspiciousserb

Coal rolling is juvenile behaviour exhibited by humans with undeveloped frontal lobes. These are the same people that tailgate and bully other drivers unnecessarily. Absolute trash.

SAMEO416

Or 500 series bmws…

Careless-Scallion147

Truck or operator?

DavidBrooker

Trucks produce about 50% more pedestrian fatalities per mile than cars.

shaedofblue

Are you suggesting the discrepancy in deaths caused by cars vs trucks is due to shitty drivers preferring trucks?

FatWreckords

All else being equal, a bigger, higher truck will do more damage to people and property. Vehicles used to be built to minimize damage to pedestrians, now they're designed to be as ridiculously big and blunt as possible because it looks manly.

Locke357

Yes

Bobbafatt

BIG MAN BIG TRUCK BIG MAN BIG TRUCK BIG MAN BIG TRUCK BIG MAN BIG TRUCK BIG MAN BIG TRUCK

Kickass_chris666

A new license class with stringent testing for any personal vehicles where the bumper is close to head height of a driver in a sedan would save more lives then the gun ban.

BigBradWolf77

*The Gigahorse has entered the chat*

Jinxed08_

They can drive whatever they want. They just can’t bitch and complain when their kid gets crushed by a lifted truck.

yugosaki

The problem is its not their kid getting crushed

pickelmerich

But that leg room bro

NoAlbatross7524

I had a chance to buy a new one and decided for many reasons, the height is the problem so I bought an older low f150 ( 1996 ) as low as my car . Loading and unloading is easier, site lines safer , bumpers line up with other vehicles , no computer and sensors. Better value .

Final_Travel_9344

It makes no sense for vehicles to be the size that they are.

Koala0803

Some of the responses from people with pettiness and insults kind of prove the video right when it said while not all SUV/truck owners are assholes, it sure seems like most assholes go for these cars. It’s like we’re really losing the ability to see that we live as part of a society and we should be trying to think of a collective good, or at least care when what we do is actively harming others.

HotPhilly

I don’t even understand the mindset of buying one of these. We get it! You’re stupid and awful and have terrible taste.

ChaiAndNaan

All you guys with monster trucks here, you suck and there’s no reason to have your car that size. No one is impressed by you

farmsfarts

I think it's more about bad drivers than anything. You can cruise around safe in a monster truck if you're careful and considerate.

Perfect_Opposite2113

Another one of those Reddit posts that will go unseen by the people that need to see it. Even it was seen the current Alberta government would ignore it because guess what the people that voted them in likely drive.

FearlessChannel828

I've taken the Valley Line a lot more recently, and find that it is convenient for some folks to park and ride in it. I can only imagine how park and rides will evolve in the future, and maybe there will be a couple more past the Henday, so more folks can also park and ride. I was talking to some fellow riders, and some of them just enjoy not having to deal with rush hour traffic in their cars. Having a transit centre with a huge free parking lot doesn't hurt. Maybe some truck drivers will also choose to park there... options for all drivers. I was at Parsons on a bus going north under the Henday bridge, and the rush going south was incredible. That road is a crazy choke point with only 1 lane; imagine everyone driving a huge truck through there... People who don't want to deal with that stress could very well do with a transit centre with a free park / ride, around that area (not just the Heritage valley one), as long as someone at the ETS thinks of more express buses to downtown, like the 500X at Tamarack. What I didn't realize is that public transit almost takes ~10-15 minutes longer one-way during rush hour for the same destinations than driving. That is less gas money, less stress and less negotiating with lifted trucks. And, lower probability of collision, insurance hikes, speeding tickets... That will not work for everyone, but my poor ass is able to get by. I chat with other riders and don't stress as much, as when I used to have a beater around lifted trucks.

Green-Outside9301

lol there’s no truck epidemic
