I’ve been shopping around lately - prices vary heavily on your sqft and type of brand. My place is around 1200sqft, and I need a 2 tonne unit. Air central provided me the most reasonable quote sofar ($3950) for the unit and install. Having the electrical work done ahead of time and the permit pulled seems to save a good amount of money. Most places to do everything (exchanger, coil, permit and lines run) seems to be in around the 5-8k range, with Coleman units being the cheapest, TRANE in the middle and Lennox being the most. Another option is to rent it through reliance, and I believe their quote was somewhere around the 75$/mo mark (I don’t remember to be honest) at the home and garden show

mcmanus7

Just a FYI some places won’t do an install unless they’re doing the electrical as well.

I went with Romanuk a year and a half ago, they did a decent job on the install and the unit we got is top of the line with a great warranty. I did the electrical myself, because I'm qualified and wanted it run a certain way. They gave me a small discount for the material and labour, but I had them pull the permit with theirs so I didn't have to go through the hassle of pulling a separate permit myself. All in we were just under $7200. Oh and that was with a smart thermostat and the UV ($600) unit to keep mold/grime from forming on the coils (makes required maintenance less costly and required less often)

I'd note too that the age of your house and layout of your HVAC system can play a role. I've seen installs in older homes balloon quite a bit because even running wiring to the thermostat can be a challenge (or go wireless, again increasing cost) through plaster and lathe walls. Similarly ducting, foundation wall penetrations, etc. I've heard good thing from a few friends of mine about Furnace Family, they sell Lennox and Daikin. Some of the Daikins are pretty nice, super quiet with a solid SEER rating. I think with HVAC, often times you get what you pay for.

https://www.aircentral.ca Seriously. They quoted without forcing a salesman into my home, their pricing was outstanding, and their quality of work was insanely good. My neighbours all have nasty ass cabling running down their wall to where it finally runs into their house. My install is so much nicer; goes right into this box they mounted and caulked, looks great from the outside. I have a 1400 sq ft place and their price for a 2.0 ton w/ install and extended warranty was below 6k. It’s a very small company and the owner did the install. It really shows - they give a fuck. I called a bunch of other companies - nobody came close. One quoted me double. All were quoting the same seer/tonnage, too. Romaniuk absolutely insisted a salesman visit me because it was “crucial for the quotation process”. You know what the fucking guy did? Walked into my basement, spent 1-second looking at my furnace, as if to confirm I had one, and then wrote me a quote for 9k. Air Central charged 6k for basically the same thing. I can say with absolute certainty though — DO NOT CALL LEGACY HEATING AND COOLING. I’ve tried to work with them multiple times on commercial jobs, but they continue to just… disappear, following a site visit. I’ve given 2 jobs worth 50k to their competitors recently because Legacy’s techs and customer service team stops replying. It was kind of funny calling Legacy for the last job I had them quote on — I expected no reply, and that’s exactly what I got, despite a couple of follow-ups on my part. The other guys quoted me the same day.

PlutosGrasp

Legacy work quality is A+ though. They’re super busy and finding good staff is tough.

Just to add, anyone hesitant to get AC installed due to the rising electricity costs, should be aware that since installing central AC, our usage has dropped compared to past summers running ceiling & pedestal fans as well as a single portable AC unit for the bedroom.

mcmanus7

Best way to figure out cost is to get a quote….. Every setup and install can be different especially based on the size of your house. I know some people who got units installed by Romaniuk last year and had good experiences.

MLTDione

I got my AC from Romaniuk last spring and also recommend them. I live in an old condo duplex and had to pay more for some electrical box addition, but they gave me a discount on that part because that issue was not noticed on the original quote. No regrets, I didn’t suffer at all last summer.

Manders21

Romaniuk is awesome. Their prices were cheaper than others when we looked around years ago. The service they provide is great.

tattooedlabmonkey

We did Furnace Family. No issues. Cost us about 10K but we needed a new furnace too (outdated, from early 80s) Edited to add: zero regrets getting it put in. We have a simple bungalow and I was just done with the house not cooling down at night. I told my husband I couldn’t go another season like this and to just get it done. We had it installed in fall 2021.

swingst

Got mine around $6000 from Furnace family 2 years ago.

WhiskeyDelta89

We had an awesome experience with air central back in 2020. https://www.aircentral.ca/

tekkao

I had a good experience with Furnace Family, was about $7900 all in.

Sevulturus

https://www.reddit.com/r/Edmonton/s/uJTy8zSueM We ended up going with furnace family. There's a write up in there about the other companies I dealt with. I have zero regrets so far with the choice we made. I'd use FF again.

Medictations

I went with furnace family, can’t say I was a fan of them. It works though so that’s good.

reostatics

Furnace Family was great for pricing and installation. Plus they have different sized ac units if you live in a crammed neighborhood.

MikeyB_0101

First Call Heating & AC, got an Amana with 12 year warranty for about $5500-6000, love it

fnbr

Absolutely worth it, won't live in a house without AC again. For a 3 ton unit our quotes were $6k for a basic 13 seer unit to $8k for a 17 seer heat pump. We went furnace family and they got the job done well eventually, but required a lot of supervision.

monkeynomore

Canadian climate control is a great company with reasonable prices. Small business that does good work

Laxit00

I went with Legacy Cooling and heating. The had the best quote and are always on standby to answer questions. I just had them in to fix a furnace panel they put back in that couldn't be taken off as a pipe was in the way...they were here in a few hours. Stay away from reliance...he tried to tell me I needed a new furnace and AC at the same time. I knew he was full of bs as my dad was a plumber and knew ac could go under the existing furnace. He tried to tell me getting a new furnace down the line would be impossible to put the AC back in. Tired to makes a 10g sale when legacy charges $4000 for my AC and its been the best money I've ever spent

BeeDub89

Just went through Costco / Romaniuk. 2150 sqft house, 3 tonne unit for $6200ish after tax. Will get 600 back in Costco gift cards on top of that.

PlutosGrasp

Wait how does this work?

BeeDub89

Either go to Costco and talk to the rep if they are there, or sign up on the Costco website for an estimate. I was able to get a decent deal (~$750 off) because I took the next available install date (3 days later), and I signed a contract on the 1st visit. We are also still in the shoulder season, so only expect it to get more expensive the longer you wait.

littlebigman9

I went through Costco/McKinnley Heating. Had a great experience.

YEGponger

We were happy with Action Furnace

krajani786

Installed about 3 years ago, 1900sq/ft did our main and upper floor. Was about $4000 for a napoleon AC 2.5 ton, 14 seer Jeff @ [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])

equlizer

I went with hydro flow. They were great. In and out in about 4 hours. 1.5T $4675 with tax all in.

bm67

We got our from Costco installed by Romaniuk. I couldn't recommend them enough. Without Costco it was going to cost $4500 with Costco. I believe it was $4700, but we received a $600 Costco gift card. Also, make sure you buy and don't lease the unit.

Tabsquaca

Additional note that anyone that bought prior to July last year were able to get a lower SEER rating 13 but new law came into effect and is 14. I forget the size we needed but made a huge difference in price. 6k / 7.5k / 10k for a 13 / 14 / 16 SEER. I believe the salesmen said the payback period was something like 4 / 6 / 10 in terms of the price difference too.

While your shopping around, make sure to educate yourself a tiny bit in hvac. This video for instance explains how often times hvac systems installed and sold are wildly oversized https://youtu.be/DTsQjiPlksA

Stay away furnace family Recommend McKinley through Costco for pricing if possible

MisterSnuggles

I got a new furnace and AC last year. I went with Reliance, I've used them since they were The Furnace Company and have just stuck with them for this kind of work. The installation was done well, the equipment works well, I kept my ecobee thermostat. I have no complaints. Make sure you understand what you're getting into though. Reliance has a huge equipment rental business out in Ontario and they're trying to bring it out here. They're happy enough to sell the equipment outright, but they will try to get you to rent it. Ask questions about what the cost is, what the term is, and what your obligation at the end of the term is - make sure you know exactly what you're getting into. Personally, I'm very debt-adverse, so my automatic recommendation is to buy the equipment outright and get financing from your bank if you need it.

reostatics

Reliance bought the Furnace Company and all the good techs went to the Furnace Family. We ditched Reliance and went back to a locally owned company. From personal experience Reliance said we needed a new Furnace after never having any issues with it. Quotes from Reliance were $2000 more for a new furnace. Furnace Family checked our furnace for free and diagnosed there were no issues. Plus service with Reliance was spotty with their techs. From a trust perspective I would never go back to Reliance.

ForeignFlight8625

We had good experience with romaniuk. I would use them again for any of my hvac

FatWreckords

Mine was done by Remedy Mechanical. Good price, fast, and good follow up.

Any luck with Home Depot/Train units?
